Kynduum - Neurisol (2020) EN

This very short EP is a creation of Canadian artist known only as Kyn and playing music within his project called Kynduum. Spend a moment to listen to Neurisol because it's absolutely worth it.

The album is devoted to depression and suffering as a result of isolation. Kyn expresses themselves with the use of mesmerizing drones creating inviting soundscapes that also emanate the feeling of distress and attractive danger. This is only strengthened in the finale part of Isol where it transforms into noisy, static post-rock. I hope the project will release some more material soon.

And we can't forget about the phenomenal cover art. It may be minimalism but one fascinating with its depth and atmosphere.

Ta bardzo krótka EP-ka to dzieło kanadyjskiego artysty ukrywającego się pod pseudonimem Kyn i tworzącego projekt Kynduum. Poświęćcie chwilę i przesłuchajcie Neurisol bo warto.

Album poświęcony jest depresji i cierpieniu ludzi w izolacji. Kyn posługuje się w przekazie hipnotyzującymi dronami tworzącymi wciągające soundscape'y, które jednak emanują również poczuciem zagrożenia, pociągającym niebezpieczeństwem. Wrażenie potęguje się jeszcze w finale Isol, w kórym do czynienia mamy już właściwie z noise'owym, bardzo statycznym post-rockiem. Mam nadzieję, że artysta szybko wypuści więcej materiału.

No i nie można zapomnieć o fenomenalnym cover arcie. Niby minimalizm a fascynuje głębią i klimatem.

A Beautiful Machine - King Tide (2020) EN

It's difficult to wrap one's mind around the fact that this beautiful noise is created by one man only. But yes, Skye Klein and his A Beautiful Machine continue the career with the fifth album called King Tide. And it's really well done.

Klein makes his post-rock shoegaze ot airy post-metal for 20 years already. It comprises "Love songs in space, space songs about love, pitch black vapour trails and all the colours old and new and never before named". In practice, it means shatteringly powerful guitar uproar, noise that is both massive and devastating but also beautiful. No wonder that the Australian's new album is dominated by the theme of the ocean.

Post-rock here is filled with dirt, atmospheric and poignant noise, very post-metal and sometimes even progressive compositions swing like the title's king tide. For me it's perhaps too metal-progressive but it's made up by the climactic moments of the epic post-rock.

Ciężko pojąć, że ten przepiękny hałas to dzieło tylko jednego człowieka. A jednak, Skye Klein i jego A Beautiful Machine kontynuuje karierę piątym albumem King Tide. I jest on naprawdę udany.

Klein tworzy swój post-rockowy shoegaze albo eteryczny post-metal już od dwudziestu lat. Składają się na niego "miłosne piosenki w kosmosie, kosmiczne piosenki o miłości, czarne jak smoła smugi pary i wszystkie kolory, stare i nowe i te, których jeszcze nie nazwano". W praktyce oznacza to wstrząsająco potężny gitarowy tumult, hałas, który jest jednocześnie masywny i siejący zniszczenie ale i piękny. Nic dziwnego, że na nowym albumie Australijczyka dominuje motyw oceanu.

Post-rock jest tutaj przepełniony brudem, nastrojowym i buńczucznym noise'em, bardzo post-metalowe, czasem też progresywne kompozycje kołyszą jak tytułowa król fal. Trochę dla mnie za bardzo właśnie metalowo-progresywne, ale zdecydowanie nadrabia to klimatycznoscią momentów post-rockowo epickich.

Astodan - Bathala (2020) EN

If it wasn't for the well-known fact, I'd be just after this year's Dunk!festival, it's a great thing then that I can write about some good post-rock from Belgium. Namely, Astodan of Brussels that showed their second album Bathala released, of course, by dunk!records.

As it's supposed from a good post-rock band, their album starts with a small earthquake in Hukluban. The music here is very guitar-oriented, it's clear that the artists can transform the quantity of guitar sounds into sound power. On the other hand, there's quite a lot of peaceful moments, sometimes turning almost into instrumental ambient.

But when the Belgians think it's fitted, they can simply swipe out the audience with the might of their sounds. Te best here is definitely Likha, a composition that's the longest and written in the most interesting way with a lot of pace changes, walls of sky-reaching sounds and tear-jerking crescendos. Buaya on the other hand is an example of a song more focused on riffs, still though, the whole album is more about the crushing atmosphere.

Astodan - Bathala (2020) PL

Gdyby nie wiadoma sprawa, byłbym właśnie świeżo po festiwalu Dunk!, znakomicie się więc składa, że mam chociaż okazję napisać o post-rocku z Belgii. Jest nim Astodan, kwintet z Brukseli, który pokazał właśnie swój drugi krążek Bathala wydany oczywiście przez dunk!records.

Tak jak przystało na dobry post-rock, zespół zaczyna od małego trzęsienia ziemi w Hukluban. Ich muzyka jest bardzo gitarowa, widać, że potrafią przemienić ilość gitar w niezłej jakości moc dźwięku. Z drugiej strony, dość często zdarzają im się momenty spokojne, czasem przechodzące wręcz w instrumentalny ambient.

Gdy jednak Belgom tak pasuje, potrafią zmieść z powierzchni ziemi siłą swoich dźwięków. Najlepiej brzmi zdecydowanie Likha, kompozycja najdłuższa i najciekawiej napisana, z licznymi zmianami tempa, ścianami niebosiężnych dźwięków i wyciskającymi łzy z oczu crescendami. Buaya z drugiej strony jest trochę bardziej skoncentrowana na riffach, w całości jednak jest to płyta zdecydowanie bardziej przygniatająco-atmosferyczne.

White Poppy - Paradise Gardens (2020) EN

Crystal Dorval and her project White Poppy is already a well known brand on the Canada's and the World's dream pop scene, I posted about her before with the album The Pink Haze of Love. Now she's back with another, just as dusty and airy, entitled Paradise Gardens. 

The ability to write engaging melodies and at the same time locking them in the fog-saturated, ethereal compositions - this is what the Canadian is really good at. Because Memories makes one of the catchiest tracks from the borders of post-punk and dreamy pop, or more precisely - from both of the genres at once. And there's more songs like this: Hardly Alive, Orchid Child czy Silence. Whatever Dorval touches, transforms into ethereal gold.

So it can't come as surprise that she calls her music "shoegaze bossa nova" - swinging and cosy from the delicate noise. This is a real silent disco - perfect for a peaceful night dance.

Crystal Dorval i jej projekt White Poppy to już uznana marka na kanadyjskiej i światowej scenie dreampopowej, u mnie na blogu pojawiła się wcześniej z płytą The Pink Haze Of Love. Teraz wydała kolejną, wciąż tak samo duszną i tak samo eteryczną, zatytułowaną Paradise Gardens. 

Umiejętność pisania wciągających melodii, a jednocześnie zamykanie ich w przesiąkniętych mgłą, eterycznych kompozycjach - to wyróżnia Kanadyjkę. Przecież Memories to jeden z najbardziej chwytliwych kawałków z pogranicza post-punku i rozmarzonego dream popu, a właściwie z obu tych gatunków naraz. Podobnie rzecz ma się z takimi piosenkami jak Hardly Alive, Orchid Child czy Silence. Czego się Dorval nie dotknie, zamienia się w eteryczne złoto.

Nie dziwi więc, że sama określa swoją muzykę jako "shoegaze bossa nova" - kołyszące i tulące delikatnym noise'em. Takie to jest silent disco - idealne na spokojną nocną potańcówkę.

DxT to projekt duetu Stevens Bouchard i Guillaume P. Trépanier z Quebeku. Ich króciutka płyta w rozmarzonych różach zatytułowana po prostu DxT to bardzo ładna i bardzo lekka propozycja dla miłośników niezbyt przejrzystego grania.

Płyta zawiera "piosenki nagrane podczas bezsennych nocy w salonie" artysty. Lo-fi'owa atmosfera napędza ten album i sprawia, że eteryczny dream pop jest jeszcze bardziej eteryczny i bliższy sercu. Delikatny wokal i powolne melodie, usypiające tempo i wzruszające nuty. Całość to zaledwie kilkanaście minut, a chciałoby się zatonąć w tych dźwiękach na dłużej.

DxT - DxT (2020) EN

DxT is a name of a duo of Stevens Bouchard and Guillaume P. Trépanier from Quebec. Their super short album painted in dreamy pink and simply called Dxt makes a pretty and very light position for the lovers of not so clear music.

The album includes "songs recorded during sleepless night in a living room" of the artists. The lo-fi atmosphere is the engine of the album and makes the ethereal dream pop even more ethereal and closer to the heart. Delicate vocals and slow melodies, lulling pace and tear-jerking notes. The whole thing barely lasts 14 minutes and you'll wish you could drown in those sounds for longer.

REW<< - Clepsydrae (2020) EN

Ryan E. Weber, known as REW<< , is a musician quite familiar to the blog's readers. Coming from the Great Lakes area, the artist appeared here with the album On the Horns of Our Spheres two year ago. This time he's back with a short but so moody EP called Clepsydrae.

Filled with piano magic like the title's hourglass is filled with sand, the album is a perfect choice for an audiophile's late evening. Neoclassical tracks with impossible delicate noise backgrounds (so well sounding together in Tower of the Winds) impresses the audience with the raw beauty. Some additions here include non-pushy drums and elements of somewhat sacral airiness in Clepsydra, but in general it's a minimalist neoclassical album and this is its strength.

Ryan E. Weber, znany jako REW<< to muzyk już nieźle znany bywalcom bloga. Pochodzący z Krainy Wielkich Jezior muzyk pojawił się tu ostatnio za sprawą albumu On the Horns of Our Spheres dwa lata temu. Teraz powraca z krótką, ale jakże nastrojową EP-ką Clepsydrae.

Wypełniona po brzegi, chciałoby się rzec jak klepsydra piaskiem, graną na pianinie magią znakomicie sprawdza się jako nocna sesja dla audiofilów. Klasyczne kawałki z delikatnymi do granic możliwości noise'wymi tłami (pięknie to gra w Tower of the Winds) zachwycają naturalnym pięknem. Dodatki na płycie obejmują też nienachalną perkusję czy elementy nieco podniosłej eteryczności w Clepsydra, jednak całościowo to raczej minimalistyczny album neoklasyczny i w tym leży jego siła.

Hello1103 & Gargle - Angraecum (2020) PL

Dwa niezwykłe zespoły, w wielu miejscach podobne, ale w równie wielu oryginalne, spotkały się na jednym splicie. To zawsze dobra informacja, a Angraecum jest w dodatku naprawdę dobrym albumem (chociaż niezbyt długim), który sprawia że spotykają się Hello1103 i Gragle z Japonii.

Ten pierwszy to duet artystów znanych jako Hitomi i yukako. Oparty na delikatnym noisie i klawiszach potrafi zabrać w eteryczną podróż mimo dość minimalistycznej estetyki. Tak jak w otwierającym split kawałku Evergreen. Gargle, którzy pojawili się już na moim blogu z płytą Wading in Shallow Waters, to również duet  Minowa - Satoshi Ikeda. Ich trochę bardziej zróznicowana muzyka niezwykła jest przede wszystkim dzięki wkomponowaniu akordeonu w ich eteryczny post-klasycyzm.

Płyta to "kolekcja inspirowanych >modlitwą< dźwiękowych rozkoszy " i faktycznie można odnieść wrażenie, że muzycy chcieli stworzyć coś, co byłoby uduchowione jak tylko się da. Z drugiej strony nie ma w  tym za grosz przesady i patosu - wręcz przeciwnie, czuć wyraźnie duch minimalizmu, który ustępuje jedynie wszechobecnej eteryczności.

Hello1103 & Gargle - Angraecum (2020) EN

Two uncanny bands, similar in many places but also both unique, met on one split album. It's always good new and Angraecum really is a good album as well (although it's not very long) that made it possible to combine Japan's Hello1103 and Gragle.

The former is a duo made of Hitomi and yukako. Based on delicate noise and keys, it is able to take the audience on an ethereal journey even if with somewhat minimalist aesthetics. Just like in the split's first track Evergreen. Gargle, who already appeared on my blog with the album Wading in Shallow Waters, is also a duo, consisting of Minowa and Satoshi Ikeda. Their a bit more diverse music is unique first of all due to the incorporation of the accordion sounds into their airy post-classicism.

The album makes a "collection of >prayer< themed auditory bliss" and indeed, you can say that the musicians wanted to create something as spiritual as possible. On the other hand, there's no exaggeration and bombast, quite contrary, the spirit of minimalism is clearly audible and make way only to the omnipresent ethereality.

Divenere - From Sahara to the Moon (2020) EN

The Italian Divenere are back on my blog together with their newest album called From Sahara to the Moon. And although it's not much more than an EP, it really draws the listener's attention serving exactly what the artists are known for.

The band makes me think a lot about what once did Eskju Divine - inspired, smooth sounds with an enormous flow, somewhat more guitar-based than the music by the Swedish but with the same vibes. The Italians make indie pop with dream pop atmosphere and shoegaze aesthetics. Every track here welcomes the audience with sounds bathing the ears with exactly zero uncomfortable edges.

Their music is based on soft bassline, keys and airy backing vocals. And there's also vocal - soft, warm and making me think of more dream pop Jonas Bjerre of Mew. The whole thing means that the (even more than usual) ethereal dream pop is the best label you can attach to the Italians' music and it's clear even in the (almost) entirely instrumental finish in Spiders.

Divenere - From Sahara to the Moon (2020) PL

Włoskie Divenere powraca na mój blog wraz z najnowszym albumem From Sahara to the Moon. I chociaż jest to niewiele więcej niż EP-ka to zdecydowanie zwraca uwagę i serwuje to, z czego artyści zdążyli już zasłynąć.

Zespół wyzwala we mnie podobne uczucia co kiedyś Eskju Divine - natchnione, gładkie dźwięki z niezwykłym flowem, trochę mniej gitarowe niż muzyka Szwedów, ale w podobnym duchu. Włosi tworzą indie pop z dream popową atmosferą i z shoegaze'ową estetyką. W każdy ich kawałek wchodzi się jak w masło, a dźwięki ich muzyki obmywają słuchacza warstwą pięknego dźwięku bez żadnych kanciastych elementów.

Ich muzyka oparta jest na miękkim basie, klawiszach i eterycznych chórkach. A do tego wokal - miękki, ciepły i przypominający nieco dreampopowego Jonas Bjerre z Mew. To wszystko sprawia, że (jeszcze bardziej niż zwykle) eteryczny dream pop to najlepsza szufladka, do której można wsadzić Włochów, co czuć nawet w (niemal) zupełnie instrumentalnym finale w Spiders.

Nick, perkusista post-metalowego Pijn z UK wydał bardzo osobistą i chyba najmniej spodziewaną dla postronnego obserwatora, delikatnie neoklasyczną płytę For. Gorąco polecam jej sprawdzenie.

Jak bardzo osobisty jest to krążek najlepiej widać po tytułach kawałków, z których każdy jest dedykowany innej osobie. Jak pisze sam artysta: "mam nadzieję, że te dedykacje sprawią, że moi przyjaciele uśmiechną się tak samo mocno jak skrindżują". Wszystkie oparte są na dźwiękach klawiszy pianina i wszystkie wywołują podobne odczucie: melancholijny zachwyt. Niektóre jednak bardziej melancholię (Fur Peter czy Til Ida), niektóre bardziej zachwyt (For Joe czy For Laurence), ale najważniejsze, że cały album słucha się dobrze niezależnie od tego czy dedykowany jest słuchaczowi czy nie.

All Partial - For (2020) EN

Nick, drummer of the post-metal Pijn of UK released a very personal and probably the most surprising for an outside observer, delicately neoclassical album called For. highly recommended to check out.

How personal the album is, it's obvious from the songs' names as each of those is dedicated to another person. As the artist says: "I hope these dedications make my friends smile as much as cringe". All of them are based on piano keys sounds and evoke similar feeling: melancholic awe. Some more the melancholic (Fur Peter or Til Ida), some more the awe (For Joe or For Laurence), but the point is that the whole album is a great listen regardless if it's dedicated to you too.

Shimmerance - Shimmerance (2020) EN

The Russian Shimmerance are releasing heir second album filed with lively but also moody shoegaze. The results can be checked on the album called simply Shimmerance.

"Beautiful noises and reverb spaces", this is the self-description of the band and you can hardly get a more generic words about shoegazish music. But also the Russians don't try to discover any new things, they want to follow the steps of the legends of the shoegazing rock, one that doesn't hesitate to use catchy melodies nor loud and dirty guitar backgrounds.

Indeed, this urge to make melodies that are so catchy, perhaps something more indie rock or even pop, is so attractive in the band's music. It's really well seen in Falling Down with its dialogic vocals and unique melody enriched with a lot of attractive, tamed noise. Or in the surprising finish of Altered Realm. Or in any other energetic and multidimensional track here.

Rosyjskie Shimmerance wydaje swoją drugą płytę pełną żwawego ale i nastrojowego shoegaze'u. Jak sobie poradzili sprawdzić można na albumie zatytułowanym po prostu Shimmerance.

"Piękny hałas i reverbowe przestrzenie", tak przedstawia się zespół i trudno o bardziej generyczny opis muzyki około-shoegaze'owej. I tak też Rosjanie nie próbują wymyślać niczego nowego, a udanie wchodzą w buty shoegazującego rocka - takiego nie stroniącego ani od wciągających melodii ani od głośnego i brudnego gitarowego tła. 

Właśnie ta wielka ciągota do pisania skocznych, wpadających w ucho melodii, bardziej indie rockowa, a może nawet popowa, tak przyciąga do muzyki zespołu. Znakomicie wygląda to w Falling Down z jego dialogicznym wokalem i oryginalną melodią a do tego atrakcyjnym, ujarzmionym noise'em. Albo w niespodziewanym finale Altered Realm. Albo w każdym innym energetycznym i wielowymiarowym kawałku grupy.

Lugshar - Muzyka naiwna (2020) PL

Lugshar to Mateusz Ciszczoń i jego ambientowy projekt dostarczony nam przez niezawodne Opus Elefantum. Jego Muzyka naiwna wcale taka naiwna nie jest, wręcz przeciwnie, utula fantastyczną warstwą ambientowego grania.

Album wypełniony jest bardzo powolną, statyczną i nastrojową elektroniczną subtelnością. Dźwięki Ciszczonia koją i tulą, a w swoim minimalizmie nawet na tle innych ambientów są niczym kołysanka pozwalająca spokojnie zasnąć. Pojawiająca się od czasu do czasu akustyczna gitara tylko to wrażenie potęguje. Nie jest niespodzianką, że szczyt tego usypiającego nastroju płyta osiąga w utworze... Kołysanka, w którym królują dzwonki. 

Ten ledwie słyszalny i kojący wszelkie dolegliwości duszy album jest zwieńczeniem siedmioletniej kariery artysty. Jak sam pisze, "Muzyka naiwna jest dla Lugshara tym, czym Selected Ambient Works było dla Aphex Twin. To dzieło kompletne – jest wybuchem materii, jej rozkwitem i unicestwieniem". Jeśli więc słuchać polskiego ambientu to w tym momencie przede wszystkim tego.

Lugshar - Muzyka naiwna (2020) EN

Lugshar is Mateusz Ciszczoń and his ambient project delivered by the never-failing Opus Elefantum label. His Muzyka naiwna ("Naive Music") is not naive at all, quite the opposite, it nestles the listener with a fantastic layer of ambient sounds.

The album is filled with very slow, static and moody electronic subtleties. Ciszczoń's sounds hug and sooth and being so minimalist, even compared to other ambients, are like a lullaby making you fall asleep peacefully. Appearing from time to time acoustic guitar only strengthens this impression. It comes as no surprise that the drowsing atmosphere reaches the pinnacle in the song called Kołysanka (meaning... Wydaje mi się, że ekstremalnie mroczny dream pop czerpiący z folku i wszelkiej maści noise'u, powiedzmy Chelsea-Wolfe-izm ma się ostatnio wyjątkowo dobrze. Dopiero co pisałem o Mirny Mine, a tu zachwycił mnie nowy album Hilary Woods Birthmarks.

Irlandka łączy właśnie wspomniane gatunki tworząc przebogaty i przemroczny tribalowy koktajl. Jak przebogate i szerokie horyzonty artystyczne ma piosenkarka niech świadczy lista inspiracji, w której wymienia przeróżne pozycje od fotografii kolodionowej przez wilki po filmy Chrisa Markera. Płyta, która powstała, gdy Woods była w zaawansowanej ciąży (na pewno inspiracja dla tytuły), zachwyca muzycznymi tłami z eterycznymi chórami, subtelną neoklasyką jak i wdzierającym się w umysł noise'em.

Im dalej w płytę tym mroczniej i niesamowiciej się robi. Tak jak w zdominowanym przez niepokojący, czający się gdzieś na granicy słyszalności noise i cały dark-tribal-ambientowy vibe Mud and Stones. Zwłaszcza użycie żywych instrumentów, które często tę atmosferę generują zasługuje na najwyższy szacunek, posłuchajcie na przykład początku The Mouth i spróbujcie nie poczuć ciarek na plecach.

Hilary Woods - Birthmarks (2020) EN

It seems to me that the extremely dark dream pop drawing from folka and noise of all kinds, let's call it Chelsea-Wolfe-ism, recently is really powerful. I've just mentioned Mirny Mine and now I'm simply amazed by the new album from Hilary Woods Birthmarks.

The Irish artist combines the aforementioned genres creating a super-rich and super-dark tribal cocktail. The richness and breadth of her horizons are well seen in the list of inspirations she accounts for that ranges from wet plate photography and wolves up to Chris Marker's movies. The album that was made when the artist was pregnant (definitely an inspiration for the title), impresses with the musical backgrounds of airy backing vocals, subtle neoclassicism and mind-invading noise.

The further into the album the darker and more eerie it gets. Like in Mud and Stones, dominated by the unnerving, creeping somewhere and barely audible noise and its whole dark tribal-folk-ambient vibe. Especially the use of the live instruments that often generate this atmosphere is something that should be respected, just listen to the first part of The Mouth and try not to feel thrills crawling up your spine.

Hubris. - Metamorphosis (2020) EN

I have repeated myself over and over again for the last half a year but I'll say it again: Switzerland recently makes a real goldmine of great post-rock and similar genres. Another proof for that is the Fribourg-based band Hubris with a dot.

As the Australian label Art As Catharsis sates, the Swiss combine on the album "both Greek mythology and their native Swiss landscapes as prime drivers for the album’s conception." Also massive sounds with lively melodies and atmosphere generation with the catchiness of the tracks. And so not super hasty but heavy Hepius at the beginning transforms into the very fast and constantly changing Dionysus. 

And the changes continue throughout the whole album. Massive Adonis  is followed by an ambient soundscape with spoken word ornaments of Icarus and finally by the very much satisfying finish in Heracles. Hubris. do what every good post-rock band should - they are open to all inspirations, combine the genre's oppositions and as a result, created a diverse and exciting album.

W przeciągu ostatniego półrocza pisałem to wiele razy, ale muszę się powtórzyć: Szwajcaria to ostatnio prawdziwa kopalnia znakomitego post-rocka i pochodnych. Kolejnym na to dowodem jest trzeci album fryburskiej kapeli Hubris z kropką.

Jak głosi australijski label Art As Catharsis, Szwajcarzy łączą na niej "grecką mitologię i ich rodzime Szwajcarskie krajobrazy jako motor napędowy dla całej kompozycji." Masywne brzmienia z kolei z bardzo żwawymi gitarowymi melodiami, a generowanie atmosfery z chwytliwością kompozycji. I tak niezbyt szybki, ciężki Hepius na początku płyty przechodzi w bardzo szybki i zmieniający co chwile swoją koncepcję Dionysus. 

I tak się ta płyta zmienia co kawałek. Masywny Adonis  przechodzi w ambientowy pejzaż przecinany spoken wordem w Icarusie, aż po bardzo satysfakcjonujący finał w Heraclesie. Hubris. robi to, co powinien każdy post-rockowy zespół - nie zamyka się na żadne inspiracje, łączy gatunkowe przeciwieństwa i w konsekwencji tworzy zróżnicowany, ekscytujący album.

Lessons from the Dreamtime - Seven Stars & Orion (2020) EN

Lessons from the Dreamtime is the stage alter ego of Jesse Maddox who in this ways tries to conduct an "experiment in neo-classical, post-industrial texture, studio manipulation, and world music". Its results are published on her fourth album since 2019 (!) called Seven Stars & Orion.

The album is supposed to "focus on distinct harmony and melody combined with a more approachable instrumentaton", its creation was aided by the work of multi-instrumentalist Thomas Rowell who broadened the instruments spectre and so the depth of the music itself. Those instruments appearing on the album include sad strings, touching piano keys and this whole neoclassical soul.

On the other hand, the album is also able to surprise with the deeply electronic composition powered by the heavy beats in Maia that make the turning point of the album towards the second half's space-ambient and dark electronic vibes while the two worlds collide in the epic Taygete and the finish in Orion. The album is impressive in its complexity and, above all, creates an attractive, cosmic atmosphere.

Lessons from the Dreamtime to pseudonim sceniczny Jesse Maddox, która w ten sposób postanowiła przeprowadzić "eksperyment na neoklasycznych, post-industrialnych teksturach, studyjnych manipulacjach i muzyce świata". Jego rezultaty pokazuje właśnie na swojej czwartej od 2018 roku (!) płycie Seven Stars & Orion.

Płyta ma na celu "skupienie się na wyrazistej harmonii i melodiach połączonych z bardziej dostępnym instrumentarium", do jej powstania swoje trzy grosze dołożył również multi-instrumentalista Thomas Rowell, który powiększył spektrum instrumentów używanych w ramach projektu i tym samym głębie samej muzyki. Te instrumenty, które pojawiają się na krążku to przede wszystkim rzewne smyczki, wyróżniające się klawisze pianina i cała ta neoklasyczna minimalistyczna dusza.

Z drugiej strony, album potrafi też zaskoczyć głęboko-elektroniczną kompozycją w napędzonej ciężkim bitem Maii, która znaczy punkt zwrotny albumu. Ten bowiem staje się w drugiej połowie kosmiczno-ambientowy i mroczno-elektroniczny, a dwa światy łączą się w epickim Taygete i zamykającym całość Orionie. Album imponuje w swojej złożoności, a przede wszystkim generuje atrakcyjną, kosmiczną atmosferę.

Merlin Ball - Virus & Virus 2 (2020) PL

Szczęście w nieszczęściu, że aktualna sytuacja epidemiologiczna wpływa pozytywnie na muzyczną wenę wielu artystom. W tym również jak się okazuje projektowi Merlin Ball z kanadyjskiego Vancouver, który wydał już dwie EP-ki poświęcone wirusowi (a następna jest w planach).

Virus i Virus 2 to wydawnictwa trochę lo-fi/DIY, ale nie czuć tego aż tak znowu bardzo. Lirycznie składa się on z eksploracji tematu pandemii i społeczno-ekonomicznych jej następstw. Nie jest to odkrywcze, ale jest wybitnie na czasie. Bardzo podoba mi się wokal - szepcząco-niepokojący, swoim nihilistycznym wydźwiękiem pasujący do tych czasów jak ulał. Nawet jeśli, jak w Everybody staje się nad wyraz melodyjny i tchnący nadzieją.

Muzycznie z kolei EP-ki składają się z ambient-popowych, delikatnie noise'owych i minimalistycznych kompozycji przywodzących na myśl niektóre momenty z dyskografii Spiritualized. Czasem bardziej pulsująco-niepokojących (fantastyczne Isolation), czasem bardziej melodyjnie-przebojowych. Niezwykle solidne wydawnictwa, jedna z lepszych tak bezpośrednio odwołujących się do COVID-19.

Merlin Ball - Virus & Virus 2 (2020) EN

Fortune in disguise of the current epidemic situation is that it positively influences the musical inspiration of many artists. Including, as it seems, the project called Merlin Ball hailing from the Canadian Vancouver, that released already two EPs devoted to the virus (and the next one is being prepared).

Virus and Virus 2 make releases that are a bit lo-fi/DIY, but it's not something that influences the reception. The lyrics explore the topic of the pandemic and its social-economic consequences. Not too unique but truly timely. I really like the vocals - whispering and unnerving, with its nihilist vibes fitting the times perfectly. Even if sometimes, as in Everybody becomes exceptionally melodic and hopeful.

Musically speaking, the EPs consist of ambient pop, delicately noisy and minimalist compositions making me think of some of Spiritualized's discography moments. Sometimes more pulsating and anxious (awesome Isolation), sometimes more catchy and melodic. A really solid release, one of the best so directly referencing COVID-19.

Opollo - JAFO (2020) PL

Jarek Leśkiewicz pojawia się po raz kolejny na moim blogu. Nawet po raz kolejny w tym roku bo Sunset Wrecks byli postowani dwa miesiące temu. Tym razem artysta powraca z projektem, który zwrócił na niego moją uwagę, głęboko ambientowym Opollo i płytą JAFO.

Płyta powstała jako "lo-fi'owe wyspy stabilizacji na niespokojne czasy", a pomóc w niej mają niezliczone warstwy grubego, ciężkiego ambientu. Słychać w nim kosmiczną pustkę i monumentalność, ale też faktycznie pewną nadzieję. Najlepiej brzmi chyba Myriad, prawdopodobnie najcięższa na płycie kompozycja, urozmaicona delikatnymi efektami wziętymi niby z retro maszynerii (którą przypomina również cover art). Podobnie rzecz ma się z zamykającym album Thrust in Me (ekstra propsy za grę słów). Urodę tej płyty należy sprawdzić samemu. I spokojnie do niej zasnąć.

Opollo - JAFO (2020) EN

Jarek Leśkiewicz again is here on the blog. It's even the second time this year as Sunset Wrecks appeared two months ago. This time, he's back with the project that drew my attention to him, the deep ambient of Opollo and the album JAFO.

The album was created as "lo-fi plateaus for troubled times", and for that, there are the uncountable layers of the dense, heavy ambient. You can easy hear there the emptiness and monumentality of the cosmos, but indeed, also some sort of hope. The best is probably Myriad, probably the heaviest composition decorated with effect sounding as if taken from a retro machinery (that is also reflected in the cover art. It's quite similar in the album's finish in Thrust in Me (also, bonus points for the lay on words). The beauty of the album is to be discovered alone. And safely fall asleep to.
