The Dark Third come from New Zealand and are inspired by a whole bunch of brilliant projects, from Blindead and The Black Heart Rebellion up to Jon Hopkins. This shows how eclectic the music on their new album "Even As the Light Grows" is.
Everything begins with chaotic noise, but it's not before long when piano music starts to emerge together witch clear drums, guitars and strings. The Kiwis show how to use a lot of various instruments and ideas create well-written and complex post-rock music. And there are also melancholic lyrics and vocal reminding me of progressive rock with it's colour. It all sound as if Steven Wilson suddenly became the frontman of Arcade Fire. Intriguing idea with great implementation.
They are good both at long, over ten minutes long compositions in this progressive folk style and in the shorter and more intensive ones, especially in "These Things Are Not Inherent" played mostly on piano and drums, or in the more guitar, in some fragments actually metal "Erewhon".
