Kalifornijczycy przebojem wdarli się na moje playlisty niezwykle udanym debiutem a ich piosenka Anthems for a Seventeen Year-Old Girl stała się najlepszym kawałkiem 2017. Wiadomo było, że ciężko będzie powtórzyć ten sukces, ale Deep Down in the Lonely Places to niezły follow-up.

Ale także bardzo inna płyta. Otwiera ją oparty na dźwiękach gitary akustycznej Repetitious Thoughts i jest to znamienne bo krążek ma zdecydowanie dużo "domowych" vibe'ów - lo-fi, dyi, jak chcecie to nazwać, zresztą już nawet okładka to sugerowała - proste zdjęcie z wycieczki zamiast zabawy w wysublimowanie. Słychać to bardzo w Love Letter to Myself (For the Car II), gdy w końcu nadchodzi ściana gitar i eteryczny hałas. Niemniej jest to kawałek bardzo dobry, który ładnie łączy melodyjność i surowy noise. 

Album balansuje więc między dream popem spod znaku ostatnich dokonań The Pains of Being Pure at Heart (Thanks for the Ride) a głośniejszymi wstawkami (końcówka Valley 2 Valley). Na pewno półeczka niżej niż poprzednio, ale skoro poprzednio było najwyżej jak możliwe to przecież wciąż nieźle.

The Californians took my playlists by storm with their exceptionally well done debut album and the song Anthems for a Seventeen Year-Old Girl turned out to be my personal best track of 2017. It was sure that the success would be difficult to copy but Deep Down in the Lonely Places makes a decent follow-up.

But at the same time, it's a very different album. It's opened with a acoustic guitar sounds of Repetitious Thoughts and it's very meaningful as the whole album presents quite a lot of home-made vibes - lo-fi, dyi, whatever the name. Actually even the cover art suggests that - a simple picture from a stroll instead of sublime tries. It's clearly audible also in Love Letter to Myself (For the Car II) when there are finally the wall of guitars and airy noise coming. Still, the track is completely fine and pretty good in combining the melodic and the noisy.

The album balances between the dream pop with the last works of The Pains of Being Pure at Heart's vibes (Thanks for the Ride) and some louder fragments (the finish of Valley 2 Valley). Surely, a shelf lower than before but since the before was the highest possible, it's still pretty good.

It's universally acknowledged fact that California is a land of good alternative music. But such a good debut doesn't happen everyday, even there. Outstanding shoegazers from 12 Decembers released their first album this winter (obviously on 12th of December) and got me on the hype train instantly.

On one hand, the layer of sound textures intoxicates. On the other, the way two vocals fit into the overall mood. On the third one, the melodies played by the Californians, that are not invasive but catchy - especially the chorus in one of the best songs here - "Melancholia". The band prefers to describe themselves as indie rock and yes, not every song here sounds shoegazish, in some of them there's more of pop-rockish devotion to delicate catchiness ("Yours Night, Thursday Night", "Lovelorn") - but in all of the songs, the unique atmosphere of the album is preserved.

Another thing is the song "Anthems for a Seventeen Year-Old Girl" - I already know it's going to be one of my favourite tracks this winter. Looped and dispersed vocals shape disturbingly familiar teenage experiences while music and melody create a mesmerizing nostalgia trap that is really hard to escape from.

Nie od dzisiaj wiadomo, że Kalifornia to zagłębie dobrej muzyki alternatywnej. Ale też nie co dzień trafia się tak dobry debiut. Fenomenalni shoegazerowcy z 12 Decembers wydali tej zimy (oczywiście 12-tego grudnia!) swój pierwszy album i zachwycili mnie po całości.

Z jednej strony warstwa dźwiękowych tekstur oszałamia. Z drugiej, dwa wokale znakomicie wpisują się w atmosferę. Z trzeciej, melodie wygrywane przez Kalifornijczyków są nienachalne ale wpadające w ucho - zwłaszcza refren w jednym z najlepszych utworów, "Melancholii". Zespół woli pisać o sobie, że wykonuje indie rock i faktycznie, nie wszystkie piosenki brzmią shoegaze'owo, w niektórych więcej jest pop-rockowego oddania się łagodnej przebojowości ("Yours Night, Thursday Night", "Lovelorn") - zawsze jednak atmosfera albumu jest zachowana.

Osobną sprawą jest kawałek "Anthems for a Seventeen Year-Old Girl" - już teraz wiem, że jeden z najlepszych tej zimy. Zapętlone i zniekształcone wokale układające się w niepokojąco znajome nastoletnie przeżycia, a do tego melodia i muzyka tworzą hipnotyzującą pułapkę nostalgii, z której trudno się wyrwać.
