An Autumn for Crippled Children - As the Morning Dawns We Close Our Eyes (2021)

They did it again. The Dutch mysterious post-black metal An Autumn for Crippled Children released another great dose of gloomy anger in the form of heavy music. After last year's All Fell Silent, Everything Went Quiet they follow up with the same level of emotions on As the Morning Dawns We Close Our Eyes.

This is a rather short one. Only half an hour but if it's so packed with the post-metal blizzard, it doesn't matter how long it is. It opens very fast with very heavy metal-like guitars and extremely black vocals. And these vibes don't leave for the next 30 minutes. It still feels like post-metal though: the screaming vocals are withdrawn and layered under the guitar noise, there's firm atmosphere and post-rock-like structures too. But it's very, very energetic - to the point where you want to start screaming yourself. The artists know how to spread the emotions through sounds and they do that so well.

There's some additional flavours like slightly sacral themes in the album's best track Splendour Unnoticed or interesting piano intrusions in Last Night I Believe You, but in general it is all about the tidal wave of slightly more post kind of metal and I'm here for it.

What can I say, I really like the Dutch trio of mysterious, anonymous musicians (I hope I posted a picture with them, apparently sometimes they are being confused with... a Polish band Yliaster). So I couldn't miss the new album of An Autumn for Crippled Children, All Fell Silent, Everything Went Quiet  on my blog.

If someone reading the title fears that the band took a sharp turn and started playing something entirely different, can feel reassured as the album is not even a bit less poignant, crushing and loud than other ones. So we have the furious, extremely post-metal vocals that makes your throat hurt from only listening to it, that on the other hand is also a bit withdrawn to the backgrounds so the band's music can also safely be called blackgaze.

Meanwhile, the backgrounds are impressive with their flow, melodies and diversity more than with strictly metal noise. Everlasting is a great example here. On the other hand, there's no shortage of juicy guitars and tracks such as None More Pale are surely gonna address metal fans' taste. The best summary of the album is its finish in the aggressive ecstasy-filled Distance.

Co mam powiedzieć, bardzo lubię holenderskie trio tajemniczych, anonimowych muzyków (mam nadzieję, że zdjęcie ich właśnie przedstawia, najwyraźniej czasem myleni są oni z... polskim zespołem Yliaster). W takim razie nie mogłem nie uwzględnić nowego albumu An Autumn for Crippled Children, All Fell Silent, Everything Went Quiet  na moim blogu. 

Jeśli ktoś po przeczytaniu tytułu obawia się nagłej zmiany w twórczości zespołu, może poczuć się uspokojony - nowa płyta nie jest ani trochę mniej zadziorna, przygniatająca i głośna od pozostałych. Mamy więc wściekły, ekstremalnie post-metalowy wokal, od którego samego słuchania boli gardło,  a który zespół chowa jednak trochę w tłach, dlatego i blackgaze dobrze oddaje atmosferę muzyki Holendrów. 

Tymczasem gitarowe tła imponują bardziej flowem, melodią i zróżnicowaniem niż jednoznacznie metalowym harmidrem. Everlasting jest tutaj świetnym przykładem. Z drugiej strony nie brakuje soczystych gitar, a takie kawałki jak None More Pale na pewno spodobają się fanom metalu. Najlepszym podsumowaniem całości jest jednak zamykający płytę, wypełniony agresywną ekstazą Distance.

An Autumn For Crippled Children - morfine EP (2017) EN

There is never enough of the noise made by the Dutch band with the name borrowed from the metalheads of Ebonylake. So I was pretty excited when it turned out that An Autumn For Crippled Children, while preparing their next long play, released an enigmatic EP "morfine".

First of all, the EP is supposed to be a mini OST for a movie entitled, yes, probably "Morfine". Unfortunately I couldn't find anything more about this picture, judging by the choice of soundtrack though, it has to be... unique. The first thing that I noticed when listening to this EP however, was pretty DIY vibe here - there are three short songs ending pretty abruptly as if they were just demos of the Dutchmen's abilities.

Still one can't feel disappointed at all. Each of the tracks is intense and doesn't really wait for the audience just develops suddenly into noisy mesmerizing compositions. The ones that make your heart stop and your thoughts fade away. A healthy dose of post-metal noise that makes it easier to wait for the successor of the fantastic "Eternal".

Hałasu od holenderskiej grupy o nazwie pożyczonej z utworu metalowców z Ebonylake nigdy dość. Dlatego ucieszyłem się, gdy okazało się, że An Autumn For Crippled Children w oczekiwaniu na nowy długogrający krążek wydali enigmatyczną epkę "morfine".

Przede wszystkim epka ma być mini soundtrackiem do zatytułowanego tak samo filmu. Nie udało mi się niestety nic na jego temat dowiedzieć. Musi być jednak czymś wyjątkowym patrząc na ścieżkę dźwiękową. Poza tym, pierwsze co rzuca się w uszy to dość... chałupnicze nagranie epki - trzy niedługie utwory kończące się nagle jakby były demem, jedynie próbką możliwości Holendrów.

Mimo to absolutnie nie rozczarowują. Wszystkie trzy są intensywne i nie czekają na słuchacza, od razu rozwijają się w hałaśliwe i hipnotyzujące kompozycje. Takie, od których zatrzymuje się serce, a myśli spowija wata. Dawka nieprzyzwoitego post-metalowego hałasu w oczekiwaniu na kontynuatorkę fantastycznego "Eternal".

An Autumn For Crippled Children - Eternal (2016) EN

Quite suddenly came autumn, and together with her (I know, autumn isn't a "she" but it is in Polish and it just fits so much) black nights and raging winds will come too. An Autumn For Crippled Children have autumn not only in their name. Also in the forlorn growl that is being heard from under the layer of shoegaze-metal guitars and keys. And, first of all, in the atmosphere that makes you feel that not everything is alright and as it is supposed to be.

Their picturesque name came from black metal band Ebony Lake's track "An Autumn to Cripple Children". They're around since 2008 but their discography is already very rich - 6 LP's and 3 EP's. Impressing. Nobody knows who they are, what their faces look like or the names sound like, which makes me only more certain that they are autumn demons and their albums are their grimoires. Even now, as summer hasn't completely surrended yet, try listening to AAFCC without shedding a tear for the dying world.

Nadciągnęła nagle jesień, a z nią wkrótce przyjdą czarne noce i wściekłe deszcze. An Autumn For Crippled Children jesień ma nie tylko w nazwie. Ma ją też w rozpaczliwym growlu, który wybrzmiewa gdzieś spod warstwy shoegaze'owo metalowych gitar i klawiszy. A przede wszystkim w tej atmosferze, która sprawia, że czujesz, że z pewnością nie wszystko jest dobrze, nie wszystko tak jak powinno.

Ich malownicza nazwa wzięła się z utworu black metalowej grupy Ebony Lake - "An Autumn to Cripple Children". Choć istnieją od 2008 roku na swoim koncie mają już sześć płyt długogrających i trzy epki. Nie wiadomo kim są, nie pokazują twarzy ani imion, co tylko umacnia mnie w przekonaniu, że są jesiennymi demonami, a ich płyty to ich księgi. Nawet teraz, gdy lato jeszcze do końca nie zostało przegnane, spróbujcie posłuchać AAFCC i nie uronić łzy nad umierającym światem.
