Carlos Ferreira & Ki Oni - A Hundred Ways of Escaping (2022)

This is another geographically challenged collaboration I post about this week. This time it's Carlos Ferreira from Brazil, a musician I love from his work with Almanacs last year, and Chuck Soo-Hoo aka Ki Oni from California. They utilized the vast distance between them on a beautiful album called A Hundred Ways of Escaping.

Knowing Ferreira's work, it's no surprise that the album is filed with subtle but very lively music. It is both mesmerizing and filled with a multitude of sounds, I would call it a psychedelic soundscape as it unveils in front of our souls but in a very peculiar way. The music is accompanied by a picturesque short story that starts with a sentence "A single broken tree stands in a field of mud" and deals with a scary, poignant but also hopeful reality around us. Interestingly, Ki Oni's moniker comes from a Japanese monster who is supposed to be "a tree with a human face that spews flower pedals from its mouth". If it's just a coincident, one thing is clear: both musicians draw a lot from nature around us and it's very tangible in their work.

Las Cobras - Selva (2020) EN

There's no doubt that the Fuzz Club label doesn't hire musicians by coincidence. This group of artists is so well described by the motto that inspires the Uruguayan Las Cobras: "we play dark sexy music". You can listen to it on their second album called Selva.

You can find many things here. Inspirations from minimal guitar blues with The Kills- or Medicine Boy-esque vibes? Sure, Down Low is filled with them. Psychedelic riffs of the coarse guitars combined with space rock atmosphere? It's Misterio. Anybody preferring more pop psychedelia? So it's Lo hacemos mal with its almost danceable pace.

The whole thing has also this clear noise, a bit garage/lo-fi climate. The vocals are pleasantly dispersed and guitars are crunchy and generate not super loud but atmospheric hum. And there are also some equally subtle keys and now we deal with the noise pop of the highest quality.

Las Cobras - Selva (2020) PL

Nie ma wątpliwości, że label Fuzz Club nie bierze do siebie przypadkowych muzyków. Jakże trafnie określa tę grupę hasło, którego trzymają się Las Cobras z Urugwaju: "gramy mroczną i seksowną muzykę". Usłyszeć można ją na ich drugiej płycie Selva.

Wielu rzeczy można się na niej doszukać. Inspiracje minimalistycznym gitarowym bluesem spod znaku The Kills czy Medicine Boy? Proszę bardzo, Down Low od nich kipi. Psychodeliczne riffy szorstkich gitar połączone ze space rockową atmosferą? To Misterio. Ktoś woli bardziej popową psychodelię? No to Lo hacemos mal z jego wręcz tanecznym tętnem.

Całość ma dodatkowo bardzo wyczuwalną noise'ową i trochę garażową atmosferę. Wokale są przyjemnie rozrzedzone, a gitary chrzęszczą i generują niegłośny, ale klimatyczny szum. A do tego podobnie subtelne klawisze i mamy noise pop wysokich lotów.

And you have to say it's extremely interesting - mesmerizing and unique vocal by Jacob Disedare, drum machine and juicy bass line based compositions and... their own visual way. Very well done. This track is already a couple month old but the band got some attention only now. And it's a good thing as the Polish shoegaze, especially from the city I live in, has it already easier in my ranks. Ten utwór ma już kilka miesięcy, ale o zespole zrobiło się trochę głośniej w ostatnich tygodniach. I dobrze, bo polski shoegaze, w dodatku z miasta, w którym żyję, zawsze ma u mnie spory plus na starcie. Gęsta atmosfera i orzeźwiający, energetyczny wokal Magdaleny Radeckiej to największe zalety ich materiału. Singiel kosztuje tyle, ile chce się zapłacić.

Unfurl - The Waking Void (2019) PL

Pochodzący z Pensylwanii Unfurl trzy lata temu debiutowało albumem Deathbed, teraz wydaje swój drugi, jakże inny, zatytułowany The Walking Void. Tak inny, że znalazł swoje miejsce na tym, nie do końca przecież metalowym blogu.

Chociaż Unfrul wyrasta z hardcore'owo-sludge'owego pnia, na nowej płycie zabawiło się nieco mieszaniem gatunków i stworzyło dzieło, które "czerpie porówno z ekstremum inspirowanego hardcorem grinding death metalu po jego przeciwieństwa, shoegaze, post-hardcore i progresywny rock psychodeliczny". I jakże frapująca jest to mieszanka! 

Z jednej strony gwałtowne i agresywne kompozycje i zdzierający głos wokalista, z drugiej, usytuowanie wokalu trochę w tle, wysunięcie ściany gitar naprzód, a to już pachnie blackgaze'owym post-metalem. Na dobre rozpoczyna się to w Post-Modern Prometheus. No i jest to nadzwyczaj trafny tytuł, biorąc pod uwagę ilość post- w opisach ich muzyki. W innych momentach, tak jak w Black Widow Hourglass, muzyka Amerykanów jest już niemal czystym, kojącym i ciągnącym się shoegaze'em spod znaku Alcest. Znakomite

Unfurl - The Waking Void (2019) EN

Hailing from z Pennsylvania is Unfurl who three years ago debuted with their Deathbed, now they give us their second, so much different album called The Walking Void. So different that it finds it place on this, not so metal after all, blog.

Although Unfrul root from the hardcore-sludge stem, on their new album, the artists played with genre-mixing and created a work that "pulls equally from the extremes of hardcore influenced grinding death metal, all to more constrained counterpoints of shoegaze, post-hardcore, and progressive psychedelic rock". And this blend is so inspiring!

On one hand, there's the rapid and aggressive compositions together with the throat-damaging vocals, on the other, the vocals are somewhat hidden, the wall of guitars before it, and it's already close to blackgaze post-metal. It's started for good in Post-Modern Prometheus. And this title is exceptionally fitting, as the number of post-'s in the genres they like is impressive. In other moments, just as in Black Widow Hourglass, the Americans' music is almost pure, soothing and long-spread shoegaze with Alcest's vibes. Impressive.

All India Radio - Moviestar EP (2019) EN

Established around Martin Kennedy band All India Radio is around already for over 20 years and released around 40 (!) albums. It's an astonishing result and it's worth congratulating the musicians by listening to the short EP Moviestar from July.

In the colourful description of their works, Kennedy states that inspirations are drawn from Lynch, Pink Floyd, Radiohead or Boards of Canada. Some of them are visible already on the cover art aesthetics, some also in the music. Kennedy and co. play sample infused post-rock with easy-to-sppot psychedelic and even jazz. There are some heavier guitar riffs but they appear very seldom (Immortality, Pt. 2), still however, the tracks' compositions and movie samples suggest deeper post-rock connections.

It's worth noting that the first two tracks are going to appear on the long play releasing in October and called Eternal.

All India Radio - Moviestar EP (2019) PL

Założona wokół Martina Kennedy'ego formacja All India Radio już od 20-tu lat i wydała około czterdziestu (!) albumów. To niezwykły wyczyn, a pogratulować można muzykom słuchając znakomitej chociaż krótkiej EP-ki Moviestar z lipca tego roku. 

W barwnym podsumowaniu swojej twórczości Kennedy pisze o inspiracjach czerpanych od Lyncha, Pink Floyd, Radiohead czy Boards of Canada. Część z nich widać już w samej estetyce cover artu, część wyraźnie w muzyce. Kennedy i spółka gra nasycony samplami post-rock z łatwo wyczuwalnymi elementami psychodelii, a nawet jazzu. Mocniejsze riffy pojawiają się rzadko (Immortality, Pt. 2), ale kompozycje kawałków i sample wyjęte z filmów mocno sugerują post-rockowe inspiracje muzyków.

Warto dodać, ze dwa pierwsze kawałki pojawią się też na zapowiedzianej na październik płycie Eternal.

Pavo Pavo - Mystery Hour (2019) EN

Pavo Pavo, the project by Oliver Hill and Eliza Bagg, makes a psychedelic indie pop with some serious Flaming Lips vibes, that is fueled by the stormy relationship between the two artists. Their second album, Mystery Hour, is going to be one of candidates for the best album of the year in many rankings.

They call their music "a fever dream filled with cinematic imagery and rooted in acute emotion". There's no shortage of those emotions indeed, as the album is reportedly written under the influence of Hill and Bagg's long-term relationship's break up. It's audible in many places, there is the "mon cheri" phrase reappearing from time to time, in the intelligent lyrics (Close To Your Ego) and the dialogic vocal between Her and Him, all of those give us the unique opportunity to look into the protagonists' emotional life.

However, there wouldn't be any of Pavo Pavo's music if it wasn't for their ability to write extremely catchy songs. Some of them really sound as if it was something so natural that it almost wasn't a big deal (Mon Cheri, Check the Weather, The Other Half). But they are best in towards the finish, in my favourite Statue Is A Man Inside in which the band go beyond more and more psychedelic barriers and make music almost like Tame Impala would if the Australians left their heavy guitar sounds behind and turned to some charming pop.

Pavo Pavo - Mystery Hour (2019) PL

Pavo Pavo, czyli projekt Olivera Hilla i Elizy Bagg to napędzany dynamicznym związkiem tych dwoje psychodeliczny indie pop spod znaku Flaming Lips. Ich druga płyta, Mystery Hour, będzie jednym z kandydatów do krążka roku w różnych podsumowaniach.

Ich muzyka nazwana jest "gorączkowym majakiem wypełnionym kinową wyobraźnią i zakorzenionym w przejmujących emocjach". Tych emocji nie brakowało, gdyż płyta napisana jest pod wpływem rozpadu długoletniego związku Hilla i Bagg. Słychać to w utworach poświęconych naturalnie miłości i tym, co się z nią przez lata dzieje. Ta intymność, w wielu miejscach pojawia się choćby zwrot "mon cheri", a inteligentne teksty (Close To Your Ego) i dialogiczny wokal między Nią a Nim daje nam możliwość wglądu w emocjonalne życie bohaterów.

Nie byłoby jednak muzyki Pavo Pavo gdyby nie umiejętność pisania wciągających i wpadających kawałków. Niektóre z nich brzmią tak, jakby nie byłaby to żadna sztuka i muzykom przychodziło naturalnie (Mon Cheri, Check the Weather, The Other Half). Ale najlepiej brzmią pod koniec albumu, w moim ulubionym Statue Is A Man Inside, w którym przekraczają kolejne granice psychodelii, grając niemal jak Tame Impala, gdyby Australijczycy porzucili ciężkie gitary na rzecz urokliwego popu.

We Are Impala - Visions (2019) EN

We Are Impala, although he name and the psychedelic colours may suggest otherwise, is not a side project by Tame Impala. It is a Spanish post-rock band who released their third album this January. You can safely say that Visions elevates them to the higher tears of the European post-rock artists league.

In We Are Impala's music you can hear balance between very rock music riffs and post-rock aesthetics. The album is not particularly gloomy/depressive, more like, as suggested by the cover art, it inspires awe with its music diversity and psychedelia. Still, unlikely other similar projects, the Spanish were able to create coherent atmosphere that rules the audience from the album's beginning to its end.

It's well-heard in Alpha Centauri. This track is a place where the musicians combined meaty rock riffs with very aesthetically pleasing keys. The combination may sound risky, but the Spanish made it work like this rocket going straight towards distant stars. The band rarely slow down, but when they do, like in Psychotrii, you can safely bet that they do so only to make the following track sound even more dynamic and poignant.

We Are Impala - Visions (2019) PL

We Are Impala to wcale nie jest, mimo nazwy i psychodelicznej kolorystyki, poboczny projekt muzyków z Tame Impala, to hiszpańscy post-rockowcy, którzy wydali w styczniu swój trzeci album. Można śmiało powiedzieć, że Visions windują ich wysoko w stawce europejskich zespołów post-rockowych.

W muzyce We Are Impala słychać mniej więcej po równo rockowych riffów i post-rockowej estetyki. Album nie jest specjalnie ponuro-depresyjny, raczej, tak jak sugeruje cover art, zachwyca zróżnicowaniem i psychodelią. Niemniej, w przeciwieństwie do wielu podobnych projektów, Hiszpanom udaje się stworzyć koherentną atmosferę panującą nad publicznością przez całą długość albumu.

Dobrze słychać to w Alpha Centauri. W utworze tym muzycy łączą niezwykle mięsiste rockowe riffy z bardzo eterycznymi klawiszami. Połączenie wydawałoby się karkołomne, u Hiszpanów działa jak rakieta zmierzająca w dalekie gwiazdy. Zespół rzadko się zatrzymuje, gdy to robi, jak w Psychotrii, można być pewnym, że robi to tylko po to by następny utwór zabrzmiał jeszcze dynamiczniej i dobitniej.

Diagonal - You Are Free (2018) EN

The Chicago-based Diagonal is a band that found out their own path through the music realm of shoegaze thanks to, as they state, "melding reverb soaked shoegaze with a subtle dose of '80s pop & '60s psychedelia". What it sounds like can be checked on the December EP by the Americans.

And so the first that draws the listener's attention is the expressive vocal by Andy Ryan, that is certainly closer to the classics from before a few decades than to shoegaze whispers. But thanks to that, Diagonal's music has less of the oneiric and more of the psychedelic vibe that's clearly best heard in Wise Mary. On the other hand, the withdrawn, a bit dim guitars together with the rest of the music create this dense background that is surely the shoegaze heritage. Also here however, it is modified and with some retro lifting due to the tracks compositions of the 80s. This combination is intriguing and refreshing, it is absolutely worth giving chance to the psychedelic oneirism from Chicago.

Diagonal - You Are Free (2018) PL

Chicagowski Diagonal to zespół, który wymyślił dla siebie swoją drogę przez muzyczną krainę shoegaze'u dzięki, jak mówią, "łączeniu soczystego shoegaze'u z subtelną dozą popu z lat 80. i psychodelią z lat 60.". Jak to brzmi sprawdzić można na grudniowej EP-ce Amerykanów.

I tak pierwsze, co rzuca się w uszy to ekspresyjny wokal Andy'ego Ryana, któremu zdecydowanie bliżej do klasyki sprzed kilkudziesięciu lat niż do shoegaze'owych szeptów. Dzięki temu jednak muzyka Diagonal ma w sobie mniej oniryczności, a więcej psychodelicznego sznytu, który zdecydowanie najlepiej brzmi w Wise Mary.  Z drugiej strony wycofane, trochę przygaszone gitary tworzące z resztą muzyki gęste tło to element shoegaze'u. Także tutaj jednak, jest on zmodyfikowany i poddany retro liftingowi dzięki wyraźnymi inspiracjami latami 80. w sposobie komponowania utworów. Takie połączenie jest intrygujące i szalenie odświeżające, warto dać szansę temu psychodelicznemu oniryzmowi z Chicago.

A Topiary - a film (2018) EN

A Topiary makes a psychedelic and moody "music without a face" but instead with a lot of different merits. You can taste it on the short EP released in November.

The band also add that they are "a type of living sculpture" and they want to use their music to fix the broken relationship between the man and the nature. Sounds intriguing? Musically speaking it is so as well. The three musicians play some sort of psychedelic pop-rock like a more delicate Flaming Lips would with this dose of shoegazing atmosphere. They can create a lot of mood (in Golden Light) or a very much engaging and catchy song (Dragon Tea). Very much worth trying.

A Topiary - a film (2018) PL

A Topiary to psychodeliczna i nastrojowa "muzyka bez twarzy" za to z całą masą innych zalet. Można jej posmakować na krótkiej EP-ce wydanej w listopadzie.

Zespół dodaje też, że jest "rodzajem żyjącej rzeźby", a swoją muzyką próbują naprawić zepsute połączenie między człowiekiem a przyrodą. Brzmi intrygująco? Tak jest też muzycznie. Trójka artystów gra rodzaj psychodelicznego rocka spod znaku spokojniejszego Flaming Lips z pewną dozą shoegaze'ującej atmosfery. Potrafią stworzyć mnóstwo atmosfery (w Golden Light) jak i całkiem angażującą i wpadającą w ucho piosenkę (Dragon Tea). Bardzo godne uwagi.

Movement Of Static - Naegleria (2018) PL

Movement Of Static to grecki zespół grający kinowy post-rock, instrumentalne granie zarażające rozmachem i mające na siebie konkretny i wciągający pomysł. Ich płyta Naegleria to próba rozszerzenia brzmienia o psychodeliczną elektronikę i pomysł na tę dźwiękową ekspansję okazał się być strzałem w dziesiątkę.

Jak pisze zespół, album "oparty jest na wędrówce ku wiedzy" i opowiada "surrealistyczną historią dziewczyny, która odbyła daleką podróż by znaleźć antyczny sekret na temat sensu życia".  A że jest doprawdy surrealistycznie, zespół opowiada ją bez słów, a jedynie dźwiękami gitarowego post-rocka. Każdy utwór ma swoje miejsce w tej historii i jeśli ktoś chce pomocy w jej zrozumieniu, warto przeczytać opisy samego zespołu na ich bandcampowej stronie.

MoS nie ma najmniejszych problemów z mieszaniem stylów w swojej muzyce: raz grają bardziej psychodeliczny, pląsający post-rock by w innych momentach uderzyć w bardziej natchnione, wspomagane syntezatorami brzmienia albo wręcz zmieść słuchaczy post-metalowym hałasem. Dla każdego coś dobrego na tej niezwykle udanej płycie.

Movement Of Static - Naegleria (2018) EN

Movement Of Static is a Greek band playing cinematic post-rock, instrumental music radiating its grandeur and having a concrete idea about its message. Their album called Naegleria makes an attempt to broaden the band's sound with psychodelic electronic and the this idea turns out to be a successful one.

As the band state, the album "is based on the journey to knowledge" and tells "a surreal story about a girl who traveled a long way to find an ancient secret about the meaning of life".  And since it really is surreal, they tell it without words, only with guitar post-rock sounds. Every track has its place in this story and if you need help in understanding it, you can always read interesting descriptions of each of them on their Bandcamp page.

MoS have no issues with combining genres in their music: sometimes they play psychedelic post-rock with guitars slowly dancing around, sometimes they get to those bombastic areas with the help of synthesizers, and finally, sometimes they crush the audience with some post-metal noise. Everybody can find something for themselves in this post-rock puzzle.

Medicine Boy - Lower (2018) EN

Lucy Kruger and Andre Leo come from the South African city of Cape Town and are inspired by music brands such as Spiritualized, Beach House or Mazzy Star, they play, as they call it, dream noise. If this is not enough for a recommendation, I will say that their new album, Lower, is certainly one of the albums that are going to be on people's tongues in this year's final months.

The combination of thrilling, atmospheric and sometimes massive vocals with the eerie music, so much airy as it is noisy, is the key to success of the album. Thanks to the guitar's rawness and the automatic drums' clearness, it sounds as if The Kills were born in California and looked up to the Californian shoegaze scene combining it with their own, unique sound. Medicine Boy can be crazily catchy, as in the single track Water Girl or Diamonds with its surprising, always changing pace.

This gloomy blues is clearly heard also in the ballads playing crucial role on the album. Slow but also lined with very tangible sadness and anxiety (as in the phenomenal  For The Time Being), they are perhaps the most interesting part of Lower. And also an important information, the band is about to start its European tour with three concerts in Poland. Highly recommended!
