Medicine Boy - Take Me with You When You Disappear (2020) PL

Medicine Boy to zespół, który zrobił na mnie niesamowite wrażenie w czasie Spacefestu 2018, a ich płyta Lower to jedno z najwyżej przeze mnie ocenianych wydawnictw w ogóle. Wiosną tego roku gruchnęła wieść, że duet kończy współpracę, na szczęście na osłodzenie tego rozstania żegna się z widownią płytą Take Me with You When You Disappear .

Wracamy więc do krainy rządzonej przez aksamitne wokale Lucy Kruger i Andre Leo i ich powolną, mroczną muzykę. Tak jak pamiętamy z poprzednich albumów, można ją określić jako wypadkową dark folku, slowcore'u i blues-rocka spod znaku The Kills. Kiedy trzeba, Kruger pokazuje pazury (Berlin Sky!) ale częściej balansuje na granicy oniryzmu i mrocznego smutku (przepiękne zwłaszcza w Rag Doll).

Czasem pazurów dostają również gitary i wtedy czuć duszną atmosferę południa USA. Zespół żegna się nadzwyczaj agresywnym i chłoszczącym uszy Vapour Voice i spokojnym smutkiem w Venom Song. A ogólnie płytą, w której najwięcej jest, całkiem zresztą odpowiednio, melancholijne atmosfery.

Medicine Boy are a band that made a huge impression on me during Spacefest 2018 in Gdańsk and their album Lower is one of my highest ranked releases ever. This spring they suddenly announced that the band is going to be dissolved but fortunately, this fact is being sweetened by a new album called Take Me with You When You Disappear .

SO we're back to the realm ruled by the velvet vocals of Lucy Kruger and Andre Leo and their slow, dark music. Just as we remember from the previous albums, we can call it a mixture od dark folk, slowcore and blues rock with The Kills vibes. When necessary, Kruger can show her claws (Berlin Sky!) but usually balances on the verge of oneiric atmosphere and gloomy melancholy (which is especially beautiful in Rag Doll).

Sometimes the claws are also shown by the guitars and then there's clear climate of the US' south audible. The band says their good byes with en especially angry and ear-whipping song Vapour Voice and the peaceful sadness in Venom Song. And in general with an album that is, quite fittingly, mostly focused on the melancholic vibes.

Medicine Boy - Lower (2018) EN

Lucy Kruger and Andre Leo come from the South African city of Cape Town and are inspired by music brands such as Spiritualized, Beach House or Mazzy Star, they play, as they call it, dream noise. If this is not enough for a recommendation, I will say that their new album, Lower, is certainly one of the albums that are going to be on people's tongues in this year's final months.

The combination of thrilling, atmospheric and sometimes massive vocals with the eerie music, so much airy as it is noisy, is the key to success of the album. Thanks to the guitar's rawness and the automatic drums' clearness, it sounds as if The Kills were born in California and looked up to the Californian shoegaze scene combining it with their own, unique sound. Medicine Boy can be crazily catchy, as in the single track Water Girl or Diamonds with its surprising, always changing pace.

This gloomy blues is clearly heard also in the ballads playing crucial role on the album. Slow but also lined with very tangible sadness and anxiety (as in the phenomenal For The Time Being), they are perhaps the most interesting part of Lower. And also an important information, the band is about to start its European tour with three concerts in Poland. Highly recommended!

Lucy Kruger i Andre Leo wywodzą się z południowoafrykańskiego Cape Town i zainspirowani takimi markami jak Spiritualized, Beach House czy Mazzy Star, grają muzykę, którą sami określają jako dream noise. Jeśli to nie wystarczy za rekomendację, ich nowy album, Lower, to będzie jeden z tych albumów, o których będzie się mówić pod koniec tego roku.

Połączenie wywołującego ciarki, nastrojowego a czasami potężnego wokalu oraz nieoczywistej, tak samo eterycznej jak i noise'owej muzyki jest kluczem do sukcesu płyty. Dzięki szorstkości gitar i zdecydowania perkusji oraz samego składu zespołu, brzmi on tak jakby The Kills powstali w Kalifornii i zapatrzyli się w tamtejszą sceną shoegaze'ową, nie rezygnując ze swojego stylu. Potrafią być dzięki temu szalenie przebojowi, jak choćby w singlowym Water Girl czy Diamonds z jego zaskakująco zmiennym tempem.

Ten mroczny blues w wykonaniu Medicine Boy słychać równie dobrze w odgrywających niebanalną role na płycie balladach. Niespieszne, ale podszyte wyraźnie smutkiem i nawet niepokojem (fenomenalna For The Time Being) są być może najciekawszym punktem Lower. No i najważniejsza informacja, zespół za niedługo odwiedzi Polskę i zagrają w Szczecinie, Warszawie oraz na gdańskim Spacefeście, poleca się!
