Hooray for Humans - Hooray for Humans (2018) EN

Hooray for Humans is a trio from the Spanish Valladolid, that plays somewhat lo-fi shoegaze, somewhat belligerent dream pop, and most certainly, very interesting music. And of course, they managed to translate the genres name into Spanish "mirar a los pies", which is real fun.

The not very long album starts with raw sound of guitars combined with melodic, delicate and very, very melancholic vocal. Precisely this unbridledness in the background is the first thing that draws attention. The other thing is the way the lyrics are written with repetitious verses made to induce mesmerizing effect.

The following tracks are more classic shoegaze with very loud guitars and the same, very sad vocal. Very good start by the Spanish.

Hooray for Humans to trio z hiszpańskiego Valladolid grające trochę lo-fi shoegaze, trochę drapieżniejszy dream pop, a w każdym razie znakomicie interesującą muzykę. No i udało im się przechrzcić nazwę gatunku na hiszpańskie "mirar a los pies".

Niedługa płyta zaczyna się niewygładzonym brzmieniem gitar połączonym z melodyjnym, łagodnym i bardzo melancholijnym wokalem. Właśnie ta nieokiełznaność w tle jest pierwszym, co przykuwa uwagę. Drugie to sposób, w jaki napisany jest tekst z powtarzanymi wkoło wersami na hipnotyzującą modłę.

Następne kawałki to już bardziej klasyczny shoegaze z bardzo głośnymi gitarami i tym samym, bardzo smutnym wokalem. Bardzo dobre początki Hiszpanów.

L'Homme Absurde - Sleepless (2018) EN

Good news came from Russia - the post-metal band L'Homme Absurde, that last year gave me chills with their interpretation of Placebo's "Without You I'm Nothing", have release new album. Good stuff to get sleepless with.

The Moscow based band was started as a solo project by A., musician known from bands like Mare Infinitum or Comatose Vigil. After the line-up was completed, the Absurde Man started to play post-black-metal with its whole power. A. and his raging scream is accompanied by black metal, furiously fast drums and atmospherics guitars whose post-metal nature devours listeners in their soundscapes.

Probably the most interesting track here is "Moments in Coma" with its rapid pace changes and great wall of guitar noise crushing the audience and their souls in steel trap made of guitar strings. There's no way to find one moment of piece throughout the whole album. But that's exactly the point.

Dobre wiadomości nadeszły z Rosji - post-metalowcy z L'Homme Absurde, którzy w zeszłym roku zachwycili mnie swoją wersją "Without You I'm Nothing" z repertuaru Placebo, wydali właśnie nowy krążek. Jest w czym się zatracić i do czego nie sypiać.

Zespół z Moskwy założony został jako jednoosobowy projekt muzyka znanego jedynie jako A., wcześniej znanego z zespołów takich jak Mare Infinitum czy Comatose Vigil. Po uzupełnieniu składu zajęli się graniem post black metalu na pełny gwizdek. A. i jego wściekły scream uzupełniony jest black-metalową, piekielnie szybką perkusją i atmosferycznymi gitarami, których post-metalowa jakość wciąga słuchacza w muzyczne soundscape'y zespołu.

Na pewno jednym z najciekawszych kawałków jest "Moments in Coma" z nagłymi zmianami tempa i znakomitą ścianą gitarowego hałasu zgniatającą słuchacza i jego duszę w stalowych kleszczach gitarowych strun. Zresztą przez całą płytę trudno znaleźć moment wytchnienia. Ale przecież to o to chodzi.

Tomorrow We Sail - The Shadows (2018) EN

For a while now, I hadn't heard of a new, good collective playing folk-inspired, atmospheric and alternative music just like Decemberists do. Luckily, the void is filled with the new album by the Englishmen of Leeds, Tomorrow We Sail and their inspirational music going as far as to post-rock borders.

The music I think about is characterized by vide use of folk-related instruments, complex lyrics reminding me of oral stories filled with mysticism and, yes, with plot, and also by dialogical, male-female vocals. All of those features can be fund on "The Shadows". I was very glad to find Fuzzy Lights, one of the most not-enough-well-known-and-deserving-to bands, perhaps ever, on the list of the artists' inspirations.

The band feels well both in long, story-like tracks as for example "The Shadows" with especially beautiful vocals or "The Ghost of John Maynard Keynes" ("the scapegoat changes but the story stays the same") and in moody ballads ("Winifred"). It's also hard to say what kind of instruments sound better - the post-rocking guitars or the atmospheric strings. The answer is probably that the band finds the balance between the genres including instrumental post-rock and neoclassical music ("To Sleep"!).

Od jakiegoś czasu nie słyszałem o nowym dobrym kolektywie grającym inspirowane folkiem atmosferyczne i alternatywne kawałki pokroju Decemberists. Na szczęście lukę te wypełnia nowy album Anglików z Leeds Tomorrow We Sail i ich natchniona muzyka zahaczająca aż o post-rock.

Muzyka, o której myślę charakteryzuje się szerokim użyciem folkowo kojarzących się instrumentów, złożonych tekstów kojarzących się z ustnymi opowieściami pełnymi mistycyzmu i, tak, fabuły oraz, bardzo często, z dialogicznym, męsko-kobiecym wokalem. Wszystko to można znaleźć z "The Shadows". Bardzo ucieszyło mnie znalezienie Fuzzy Lights wśród inspiracji artystów bo to jeden z najlepszych mniej docenionych zespołów, być może, ever.

Grupa odnajduje się zarówno w długich, opowieściowych kawałkach jak okraszone znakomicie brzmiącym wokalem "The Shadows" czy w "The Ghost of John Maynard Keynes" ("kozioł ofiarny się zmienia ale historia jest wciąż taka sama") jak i w nastrojowych balladach ("Winifred"). Trudno powiedzieć też, jakie instrumenty brzmią lepiej - czy post-rockująco szemrzące gitary czy nastrojowe folkowe smyczki. Chyba po prostu zespół odnajduje doskonały balans między gatunkami łącznie z instrumentalnym post-rockiem czy neoklasyką ("To Sleep"!).

Jérémie Renoir - The Rock EP (2018) EN

Jérémie Renoir creates his music in Paris and has just released his debut EP. Apparently, the series of EPs is how he wants to communicate with his fans, rather with than longer releases. The Frenchman is compared to the biggest names with the likes of Björk, Leonard Cohen and David Lynch but what is more important, he shows so much of his own style that doesn't have to fear being labelled.

The most important aspect of Renoir's music is his voice. Low-pitched, full of tasty rustles and deep like a bottomless pit. Even when in some parts he's busy with climbing to higher pitches or even in charming backing vocals ("The Rock"), draws full attention of the listener. Although it is compared to voices of Cohen or Chet Faker, I think it is unique enough to attract fans as if it was a real life magnet.

The artist's music is mostly heavy sounding piano keys and delicate electronics humming in the background or setting up the rhythm. The latter, often quite unorthodoxically rhythmic, revokes the already mentioned Björk but to be honest, it's less experimental than the Icelander's latest works. It is the perfect balance between ambitious electronic music and pop catchiness.
