Downward - Downward (2018) PL

Debiutancki LP Amerykanów z Tulsy jest dla nich wielką sprawą, jak piszą na Bandcampie, "to początek czegoś wyjątkowego", po czym dodają, że "Downward is Heavenward (>>w dół znaczy w stronę nieba<<)". Słuchając gęstego shoegaze'u w kalifornijskim stylu, łatwo w to uwierzyć.

Jakościowo, muzyka Downward to najwyższej klasy shoegaze (w końcu kierunek patrzenia w czasie grania koncertów shoegaze'owych zawarli nawet w swojej nazwie). Zespół uchwycił w najlepszy możliwy sposób proporcje między głośnością wokalu a zagłuszających go gitar, tak że jest i głośno i eterycznie, tak jak powinno być. Zwłaszcza, że wokal sam w sobie jest nadzwyczaj senny i oniryczny.

Na płycie brakuje kawałka, o którym można by jednoznacznie powiedzieć, że jest hitem zespołu, od którego należy zacząć słuchać. VHS intryguje wyjątkową zadziornością gitar, Found a Friend to ładna ballada, ale jeśli mam wybrać najlepszy to będzie nim Bored, który wprowadza słuchacza w tę równą płytę pełną gęstego, amerykańskiego shoegaze'u.

Downward - Downward (2018) EN

The debut LP by the Americans from Tulsa is an important thing for them, as they stated on their Bandcamp: "this is the beginning of something special." after each they add "Downward is Heavenward". Listening to this California style dense shoegaze makes it easy to believe so.

Quality-wards, Downward's music makes the shoegaze of the highest class (after all the direction of gazing during shoegaze concerts is even included in their name). The band managed to catch the best possible ratio between the vocal's volume and the loudness of the guitars so it is both noisy and airy, as it's supposed to be. Especially that the vocal itself is extremely dreamy and oneiric.

On this album, there's no track that could be definitively marked as the band's hit you should start listening from. VHS intrigues with the especially raw guitars, Found a Friend makes a delicate ballad, but if I'm to choose one, it'd be Bored that introduces the listeners to this well-balanced album of dense, American shoegaze.

mindsedge - Branches EP (2018) EN

Mindsedge is a Polish band for whom the most important in music are "atmosphere and emotions" and they express them with guitar post-rock. They are releasing the third album soon, but before that happen, we can feel this on their new EP called Branches.

Their music inspirations are wide and go from Pink Floyd up to Te', no wonder that they offer some diverse guitar music, especially on this EP that they even call "an experimental one". It starts with an unsettling title track lined with electrifying heartbeat. Similarly in the following tracks, there is no traditional post-rock composition, they are more about generating this unnerving and melancholic at the same time atmosphere, especially in Absence of Being that is well drowned in guitar drones. Waiting for the LP.

mindsedge - Branches EP (2018) PL

Mindsedge to zespół z Polski, dla którego w muzyce najważniejsze są "atmosfera i emocje", a wyrażają je gitarowym post-rockiem. Zanim wydadzą trzeci długogrający krążek, można to poczuć na ich nowej EP-ce zatytułowanej Branches.

Ich muzyczne inspiracje rozciągają się od Pink Floydów po Te', nic dziwnego, że oferują bardzo zróżnicowane gitarowe granie, zwłaszcza na tej EP-ce, którą nazywają eksperymentalną. Zaczyna się ona od niepokojącego utworu tytułowego podszytego pełnym napięcia rytmem bicia serca. Podobnie w kolejnych utworach nie ma tradycyjnej post-rockowej budowy, a raczej chodzi o generowanie niepokojącej i melancholijnej atmosfery, zwłaszcza w Absence of Being zatopionej w gitarowych dronach. Czekam na LP.

Ghostly Kisses - The City Holds My Heart EP (2018) EN

The project by the Canadian Margaux Sauvé is made of airy music sounding like William Faulkner's poetry would (if it was music) and hence the project's name.

I really like Sauvé's poetry, it is about love, but it's a very different take than the usual ones. It's brilliant, especially in the title song The City Holds My Heart with the lyrics going "The city holds my heart/ Within walls of glass and steel/ Can’t you see I just can’t go?/ These walls are all I know". This airy and a bit dark vocal is accordingly fitted with ethereal compositions of piano, strings and electronic elements. But the most important is the way the artist manages to create an unbelievable atmosphere in.

And the whole play list is closed by the most atmospheric take on the classic Zombie I've ever heard.

Ghostly Kisses - The City Holds My Heart EP (2018) PL

Projekt Kanadyjki Margaux Sauvé to eteryczna muzyka brzmiąca jak poezja Williama Faulknera (z niej wzięła się nazwa projektu). 

Nadzwyczaj podoba mi się poezja Sauvé, niby o miłości, ale w bardzo inny sposób. Znakomicie brzmi zawłaszcza tytułowy utwór The City Holds My Heart, z tekstem "To miasto trzyma mnie za serce/ Między ścianami ze szkła i stali/ Nie widzisz, że po prostu nie mogęgo opuścić?/Te ściany to wszystko, co znam". Do eterycznego i trochę mrocznego wokalu pasują zwiewne kompozycje z pianinem, smyczkami i elektronicznymi elementami. Najważniejsze jest jednak to, jak niepowtarzalną atmosferę potrafi stworzyć artystka.

A całość zamknięta jest najbardziej nastrojowym wykonaniem kultowego Zombie, jakie słyszałem.

Shallow Seas - Shallow Seas (2018) EN

A Hungarian band that is one big mystery in the Web. They seem to be debuting, but on the other hand, the really good sound of their music and details such as a very well-thought-through logo, may suggest something else. Anyway, it's worth to get to know the world of Shallow Seas on the new album.

Instrumental post-rock from the Hungarians surprises with its uniqueness. It's not a boring mess of calm sounds nor a breath-taking and monumental guitar orgy. It's precisely in the middle of the two extremes with its brilliant compositions, catchy melodies and interesting ways of creating music. Those are, among others, airy backing vocals in Elèphant,  wonderful use of keys in Shallow Seas, or riffs in One Door. The Hungarian band is definitely worth our attention.
