"Not your average EP" makes the whole description of this album by the one man shoegaze project from Tennessee. And indeed, you can safely say that slush has this thing that makes it stand out.

Airy atmosphere made even stronger by the lo-fi aesthetics and the beautiful cover art is the main characteristics of the EP. It's clear that it's a solo project so there's not much of the massive sounds and it's more about almost bedroom-pop-like themes (as in The Less You Do the More You Win). Especially worth listening to is the last but one track called Seriously and it's seriously a top class ethereal shoegaze, and this is what I'm counting on coming from the project on next albums.

"Nie taka zwykła EP" jest całym opisem albumu shoegaze'owego jednoosobowego projektu z Tennessee. I rzeczywiście, można powiedzieć, że slush ma coś, co ją wyróżnia. 

Eteryczna atmosfera pogłębiona jeszcze lo-fi'ową estetyką i pięknym cover artem, to motywy przewodnie EP-ki. Słychać, że jest to album solowy a więc brakuje potężniejszych dźwięków charakteryzujących gatunek, a więcej jest niemal bedroom popowych tematów (tak jak w The Less You Do the More You Win). Zwłaszcza interesujący jest przedostatni kawałek Seriously, to już jest wysokiej klasy eteryczny shoegaze i na takie kolejne kawałki projektu liczę.

Sólveig Matthildur - Constantly in Love (2019) EN

Mysterious in the picture and nice and lovely in person, the Icelandic artist is a member of the brilliant Kaelan Mikla whose last band is the coldwave of the highest quality and whose concerts are to be remembered for a long time (as it was with the one in Kraków this spring). Meanwhile Solveig released a solo album and it must be said that Constantly in Love is quite different in atmosphere from the band's works.

The album should be put on to admire its poetic side amongst others. The whole thing is a camo-ed poem with its own beginning and finish and while it is about love, something that may sometimes be trivial, it does so in such an intriguing, challenging and well thought-through way that it hardly can not be appreciated. Not to mention the smart usage of the titles, finger-licking good.

And it's played as a combination of songwriting pop with gothic new wave. On one hand, Solveig, her vocals and lyrics are always in the focus, which can't be a surprise, on the other, the Icelander's intriguing voice and synth melodies with shallow basses are certainly the influences from her musical background. Also, the album includes a remix version of Your Desperation by the coldwave project Hante who loves collaborating with Kaelan Mikla.

Sólveig Matthildur - Constantly in Love (2019) PL

Tajemnicza na zdjęciu i urocza prywatnie Islandka to członkini fantastycznego Kaelan Mikla, którego ostatnia płyta to zimna fala z niezwykle wysokiej półki, a koncerty wspomina się bardzo długo (tak jak ten w Krakowie tej wiosny). Tymczasem Solveig wydała do tego album solowy i trzeba przyznać, że Constantly in Love odbiega klimatem od dokonań zespołowych.

Płytę należy odpalić choćby ze względu na jej poetycki charakter. Całość to jeden zakamuflowany poemat ze swoim początkiem i końcem i chociaż mówi o miłości, co wydawać się może banalne, robi to w tak intrygujący, wymagający i przemyślany sposób, że nie można tego nie docenić. Nie mówiąc już o przebiegłych tytułach poszczególnych kawałków, no palce lizać.

A zagrane jest to jak połączenie songwriterskiego popu z gotycką nową falą. Z jednej strony to Solveig, jej wokal i jej teksty są zawsze na pierwszym planie, co oczywiście nie dziwi. Z drugiej, intrygujący głos Islandki oraz synthowe, rozlane melodie i płaski bas to z pewnością naleciałości z jej macierzystego zespołu. Tym jest także fakt, ze płyta zawiera remix Your Desperation w wykonaniu zaprzyjaźnionego z artystkami Hante.

Janusz Jurga - Hypnowald (2019) EN

Recently on the blog came back Giriu Dvasios with his mixture of dub and folk music and now it's time for his Polish (and way darker) counterpart, new album by Janusz Jurga called Hypnowald.

Actually the artist has his own name for the music he makes - ambient forest techno. And it's very much accurate. Sampled bird hooting, fire cracking and generally unsettling but natural noises of the night forest come forth during the whole album. Four pieces that create a festival of atmospheric and aesthetically pleasing electronic music lined with some limbs-moving basses. Perhaps there's not much of the traditional folk music here (instrumentally and vocally speaking) but it's enough to listen to the third track on the album and get into the folk interpretation of the world that it involves. And finally the more traditional folk is also present in the last song with its ethno-singing. Good stuff.

Janusz Jurga - Hypnowald (2019) PL

Całkiem niedawno na blog wrócił Giriu Dvasios ze swoim połączeniem elektronicznego dubu i folku, teraz czas na jego polski (i dużo, dużo mroczniejszy) odpowiednik - nowy album Janusza Jurgi Hypnowald.

Zresztą sam artysta ma na swoją muzykę własne określenie: ambient forest techno. No i jest to całkiem trafione. Zasamplowane pohukiwanie ptaków, trzaskanie ognia i ogólnie niepokojące a naturalne dźwięki nocnego lasu pojawiają się na płycie przez cały czas jej trwania. Cztery kawałki to festiwal klimatycznej i estetycznej elektroniki podbijanej wyraźnym, ruszającym do tańca basem. Być może z tradycyjnego folku nie ma tu za dużo (instrumentalnie, wokalnie, etc), ale wystarczy posłuchać trzeciego kawałka na płycie i spokojnie zanurzyć się w folkowej interpretacji świata. Tylko tym razem zagranej na elektronicznych dźwiękach. W końcu i tradycyjny folk dochodzi do głosu dzięki tradycyjnie brzmiącym etno zaśpiewom w części czwartej. Dobry stuff.

c a s h - collision course (2019) EN

This youngster is absolutely one of the kind. The teenager from Mumbai creates tons of nostalgically beautiful sounds and puts them on more and more albums. Also with the help of some other interesting artists. This is Cash's new album - collision course .

His music could be described as subtle electronics mingled with some neoclassical beauty. Just as it's in the single and title track collision course the opens the album and imposes the course (sic!) on the rest of the tracks. The sounds generated by the artist and the delicate piano music together end up being oneiric in atmosphere that make it very easy to dissolve in. If I was to enlist the songs that best manage to convey this, I'd have to mention the whole album. And what's more, Cash received some help from other interesting young musicians who made the album even more colourful bringing with them for example some trip-hop-like beats.
