I Mean Us - OST (2018) EN

Both lively and energetic as well as dreamy and oneiric, this is the guitar shoegaze by I Mean Us from Taiwan. "OST" indeed is an official soundtrack made for the situation "between us", as the musicians state, and it overflows with guitar noise and emotional comments about being in relationship.

The artists fascinate with the dialogical vocals, the woman-man disputes always sound well presented like that, this time the soft and war male vocal sounds perfect together with high-pitched, very Far East-like female one. Their tracks also revolve around woman-man topics, the ones to weep to. No wonder they describe their work with some made up genres like "Cry-crycore", "Post-murmur Rock", or "Broken-Hearted". Apart from the laces-like, delicate vocal, they know how to make some loud guitar sounds and even grandeur-filled atmosphere, as in "EYヨ".

But the album offers some surprises too, as in very aggressive "Johnny The Hero", bedroom pop in the following "Dance!" and some trip-hop vibes later. Nevertheless, the album is not balanced, I especially like the beginning and the finishing "死宝貝", but it is still a wort-checking out release.

Jednocześnie żywy i energetyczny jak i senny i oniryczny, taki jest gitarowy shoegaze w wykonaniu I Mean Us z Tajwanu. "OST" jest owszem ścieżką dźwiękową do sytuacji "między nami", jak piszą muzycy i zalewa słuchaczy gitarowym hałasem i emocjonalnym komentarzem do bycia w związku.

Muzycy fascynują dwugłosowym wokalem, damsko-męskie rozrachunki zawsze brzmią w takiej wersji dobrze, a tym razem miękki, ciepły wokal męski gra perfekcyjnie z wysokim, takim bardzo dalekowschodnim wokalem kobiecym. Ich kawałki również oscylują wokół tematów damsko-męskich, takich do płakania. Nic dziwnego, że swoją muzykę określają fikcyjnymi terminami jak "Cry-crycore", "Post-murmur Rock", czy "Broken-Hearted". Poza delikatnym jak koronka wokalem, I Mean Us pokazuje też, że potrafią w głośne gitary, a nawet pełne rozmachu, epickie muzyczne konstrukcje, jak we fragmentach "EYヨ".

Tymczasem album oferuje też niespodzianki. Tak jak wyjątkowo agresywne "Johnny The Hero", czy następujące zaraz po nim bedroom popowe "Dance!", lub trip-hopowa atmosfera w kolejnych. Niestety płyta nie jest do końca równa, zdecydowanie najbardziej pasuje mi jej początek i zamykające ją "死宝貝", bez wątpienia jednak jest to pozycja warta uwagi.

The Daysleepers - Creation (2018) EN

The New York City based The Daysleepers are not a new band. Their firt EP was released in 2005 and the first longer album, "The Soft Attack", a year later. Their name is super meaningful as the Americans play a very, very dreamy and space as well shoegaze. After coming back last year with the single "There Is A Light That Never Goes Out", they have just released a great album called "Creation".

It seems that the break turned out to be good for them, the new album is more mature and impressive. The combination of the dreamy genres - from the heavy shoegaze, through space dream pop, up to ambient sounds works just fine. The band balances between them, offering tracks focused on creating the atmosphere, as the opening "This Dark Universe" and some melody-oriented, though still dipped in reverbs, like "Arclights". Very often they also address the very classics, as in "The Memorymaker", sounding like something exactly between the works of  Slowdive and My Bloody Valentine.

Nowojorskie The Daysleepers nie zespołem nowym, ich pierwsza EP-ka ukazała się w 2005, a rok później wydali długograjacy debiut "The Soft Attack". Nazwa projektu jest bardzo znacząca bo Amerykanie grają bardzo, bardzo oniryczny i kosmiczny zarazem shoegaze. Po zeszłorocznym powrocie z singlem "There Is A Light That Never Goes Out", wydali właśnie znakomity album "Creation".

Wygląda na to, że przerwa dobrze im zrobiła, po nowy album jest dojrzalszy i bardziej efektowny. Mieszanina wszystkich onirycznych gatunków - od przytłaczającego shoegaze'u, przez kosmiczny dream pop po ambientowe dźwięki, brzmi tak jak powinna. Zespół balansuje między nimi serwując kawałki nastawione przede wszystkim na generowanie atmosfery, jak otwierające album "This Dark Universe" i bardziej melodyjne, chociaż wciąż zatopione w reverbach, jak "Arclights". Nierzadko odwołują się też do absolutnej klasyki gatunku, jak w "The Memorymaker", które brzmi jak dokładnie pomiędzy Slowdive a My Bloody Valentine.

americansignlanguage. - I Exist (2018) EN

From the combination of genres they were born - emotional punk-rockers from England: - americansignlanguage. Their new album is filled with thorough inside into the human being and with impossible to tame musical energy. This is "I Exist".

The album has its special theme. As the musicians say, it "explores escaping the grips of mental health, loss, falling back into depressive states and the realisation that you're never alone even when it feels like you are". On one hand, it is served in the poetic lyrics, on the other, the lyrics are shouted out, growled out or, in the best case, spoken out by the vocalist, the expressive Adam Hyman. And on the third hand, it is accompanied by lively and loud guitars, so he best parts of hip-hop, poetry and post-rock.

The best and the most poignant track on the album would be "Everything That Grows" with the narrative vocal telling a captivating story and with the shouted out, hopeful chorus. It's worth to mention the music layer, that would be quite alright on its own as a really well-written post-rock song.

Z połączenia kilku bardzo ekspresyjnych gatunków wynikli oni - emocjonalni punkowcy z Anglii - americansignlanguage. Ich nowa płyta jest pełna zarówno wnikliwego wglądu w istotę ludzką, jak i nie dającej się okiełznać muzycznej energii. Oto "I Exist".

Płyta ma szczególne znaczenie. Jak piszą muzycy, "eksploruje stan wymykania się zdrowiu psychicznemu, utratę, popadanie w stany depresyjne a także odkrycie, że nigdy nie jest się samemu, nawet kiedy tak się wydaje". Z jednej strony jest to podane w poetyckich tekstach, z drugiej, teksty te są wykrzykiwane, wycharczane, lub w najlepszym razie wypowiedziane przez wokalistę, ekspresyjnego Adama Hymana. A z trzeciej, towarzyszą im żywe, głośne i dobitne gitary - a więc trochę najlepszych cech z hip-hopu, poezji śpiewanej i post-rocka.

Najbardziej przejmujący i najlepszy na krążku jest "Everything That Grows" z zagajającym wokalem opowiadającym swoją historię i z wykrzykiwanym, pełnym nadziei refrenem. Warto do tego dodać warstwę muzyczną, która dałaby sobie zupełnie radę sama jako bardzo udany utwór post-rockowy.

Fading Tapes - Northern Constellation (2018) EN

They are inspired by "various experiments", they play "horny intubated experimental space granite rock" and they do it for four years now. The Krzysztof Siwkowski and Marcin Lasek duet released an album filled with a lot of experiments and guitar ambient, called "Northern Constellation".

The album is "only" three tracks long but the tracks are very long and filled with goodies. The delicate guitar string sounds that had been played on with various effects inspire with their atmosphere and the way they were written. It's not only a guitar drone, the artists did they best so the hour spent with the album couldn't possibly be perceived as boring, that's why sometimes it sounds like a purebred ambient while sometimes it's a very slow instrumental post-rock. Classy.
