Niights - Hellebores (2019) EN

Floating between charming dream pop and heavy rock, Niights show why they coined a genre name dream pop especially for themselves. The Cleveland-based formation have just released two parts of an album Hellebores.

The band led by the vocalist Jenna Fournier admit that they are inspired by various artists - from MBV and Slowdive to Yo La Tengo and Joanna Newsom. All of those inspirations are heard in their works. The buttercups type themed album's first part is opened with grinding intro and the album's perhaps catchiest track - Generator. The first thing to notice is Fournier's vocal that somehow relates less to dream pop and more to rock music bands advertised with a strong female personality as the leader.

On the other hand, my favourite track Stars combines its first part, extremely dream pop-like in the best possible way and a post scriptum in the form of over flooding guitar wave. It's very similar in the album's second part with a slight difference as it's even more reigned by hard rock guitars. The best summary of the whole album would be the long With Bated Breath going through all the phases typical for Niights' music.

Zawieszeni między urokliwym dream popem a ciężkim rockiem, Niights pokazuje dlaczego ukuli dla siebie łatkę dream metal. Formacja z Cleveland wydała właśnie podzielony na dwie części album Hellebores.

Zespół dowodzony przez wokalistkę Jennę Fournier przyznaje się do wszelakich inspiracji - od MBV i Slowdive po Yo La Tengo i Joannę Newsom. Wszystko to słychać w ich twórczości. Część pierwsza zatytułowanej od odmiany jaskra płyty otwiera się zgrzytliwym intro i największym chyba przebojem krążka - Generator. Pierwsze, co rzuca się w uszy to ekspresyjny wokal Fournier, nie kojarzący się z dream popem a bardziej z twórczością zespołów rockowych afiszujących się silną kobiecą osobowością na wokalu.

Z drugiej strony mój ulubiony kawałek Stars łączy w sobie część pierwszą, zupełnie dreampopową w najlepszym guście i post scriptum w postaci zalewających słuchaczy gitar. Podobnie jest w części drugiej, chociaż tutaj jeszcze wyraźniej królują hardrockowe gitary. Najlepszym podsumowaniem albumu jest długaśny With Bated Breath przechodzący przez wszystkie fazy typowe dla twórczości Niights.

Labirinto - Divino Afflante Spiritu (2019) EN

The Brazilians from Labirinto are proud to be releasing their music from 13 years and having no major competition in South America. While I'm not entirely in agreement with the latter, the fact is that their new album, Divino Afflante Spiritu, shows tons of heavy and great guitar quality.

For the band centered around the married couple of guitarist Eric Cruksen and drummer Muriel Curi, it's only the third long play but they do have experience drawn from EPs and splits (with THISQUIETARMY amongst others). It's visible as the new album has zero moments of unnecessary sounds. Heavy, metal guitars are combined with sporadic growl and structured into very much post-rock-like compositions. Those louder ones, such as Eleh Ha Devarim, emit sound aggression that within its loudness incorporates sad, melancholic notes though.

On the other hand, Labirinto's tracks often aim into epic grandeur. An example here would be Demiurge combing very metal guitars with the atmosphere of self-aware post-rock. The latter is the best visible in the album's best, title and closing the whole LP Divino Afflante Spiritu. In fact, the whole album balances on this difficult to define and extremely intriguing border of post-rock and post-metal.

Brazylijczycy z Labirinto szczycą się tym, że wydają swoją muzykę od 13 lat i nie mają większej konkurencji w Ameryce Południowej. Nie do końca się z tym zgadzam, ale faktem jest, że ich najnowsza płyta Divino Afflante Spiritu to kawał znakomitej i ciężkiej gitarowej jakości.

Dla zespołu skupionego wokół małżeństwa gitarzysty Ericka Cruksena i perkusistki Muriel Curi to dopiero trzecia długogrająca płyta, niemniej mają oni doświadczenie zaczerpnięte z EP-ek czy splitów (między innymi z THISQUIETARMY). To się przydaje bo na nowym albumie nie ma ani chwili niepotrzebnych dźwięków. Ciężkie, metalowe gitary sąsiadują ze sporadycznym growlem i wpisane są w całkiem post-rockowe kompozycje. Te głośniejsze jak Eleh Ha Devarim epatują dźwiękową agresją, która jednak w swoim hałasie przekazuje smutne, melancholijne nuty.

Z drugiej strony, kawałki Labirinto często celują w epicki rozmach. Tak jest na przykład z Demiurge, który łączy bardzo metalowe gitary z atmosferą pysznego post-rocka. Tej ostatniej najwięcej jest w najlepszym na płycie, zamykającym ją i tytułowym Divino Afflante Spiritu. Zresztą cała płyta balansuje na trudnej do zdefiniowania i mega instrygującej granicy post-rocka i post-metalu.

Hold Your Horses! - Datsusara (2019) EN

Broader audience knows the French band Hold Your Horses! from their brilliant music video to the track 70 Million. But still, it was almost a decade ago. Now the musicians often compared to Arcade Fire are back with the EP called Datsusara.

While the French are really close to the sounds of Win Butler's collective, I was more bound to compare them to one of my favourite bands ever, The Paper Chase. This comparison is clearly due to the similarities between the vocals of Charles from Hold Your Horses! and John Congleton. But there is more to it, it's also about the complexity and the apparent chaos in the both band's music, the French themselves call it as "enthusiastic and colourful pop alchemy". This blending of rock, folk instruments and energy is clearly visible on Datsusara.

The album is started with Call from the Hill with its folk-like message and really an orchestral execution, but the EP's best is Arms & Arms. Opened with a charming melody on keys and strings, the track quickly changes to something that could easily be included on Someday This Could All Be Yours by the already mentioned The Paper Chase. However, the track from France i a bit more melodic and a tad less aggressive in what it stands for. But the music quality is about just the same.

Hold Your Horses! - Datsusara (2019) PL

W świadomości szerszego kręgu fanów francuski zespół Hold Your Horses! zasłynął dzięki genialnemu teledyskowi do kawałka 70 Million. Niemniej, było to już prawie dekadę temu. Teraz porównywani do Arcade Fire muzycy wracają z EP-ką Datsusara.

O ile faktycznie Francuzi porównywani sa do zespołu Wina Butlera, mnie skojarzył się z jednym z moich ulubionych formacji ever, The Paper Chase. To porównanie bierze się oczywiście z podobieństwa wokalu Charlesa z Hold Your Horses! i Johna Congletona. Ale również ze złożoności i pozornego chaosu muzyki obu zespołów, zresztą Francuzi w efektowny sposób opisuje ją jako "entuzjastyczna i barwna popowa alchemia". Ta mieszanka rocka, folkowego instrumentarium i energii świetnie ukazana jest na Datsusarze.

Album otwiera Call from the Hill z folkowym przesłaniem i naprawdę orkiestrowym wykonaniem, jednak najlepsza na płycie jest Arms & Arms. Otwarty urokliwą melodią na klawisze i smyczki, bardzo szybko zamienia się w kawałek, który spokojnie mógłby znaleźć się na Someday This Could All Be Yours przywoływanego wcześniej The Paper Chase. Chociaż kawałek z Francji jest trochę bardziej melodyjny i mniej agresywny w przekazie. Natomiast poziom tak samo wysoki.
