The Indonesian Airportradio creates a genre eclecticism of the best kind, it is what they meant with the name of the project that refers to "the silent mumble one can experiment on an airstrip". The band want to combine in their music "trip-hop, post-rock, dreampop, dark-wave and downtempo influences". How they manage to do so can be found on their new album Selepas Pendar Nyalang Barbayang.
Indeed, the combination is the important characteristic here. The album starts with tracks in which alongside the delicate noise and strings, the crucial roles are played by Benedicta R. Kirana's vocal and thick bassline (especially in the charming Black Pepper). When it seems that the whole album is going to emanate with this subtle, almost acoustic trp-hop, the game is changed by aggressively sounding rap (in The Episodes). We also deal with long and not hasty jazzy moments in Nirmana Warna, noise ones in Letterlijk, or the outro played on violins. The Indonesians make an interesting variation on what trip-hop can look like if it gets rid of the overuse of electronic sounds and instead experiments with live instruments.
Selepas Pendar Nyalang Barbayang costs 4 USD.
