EP by shoegazers from Ohio who fittingly play their slow but glowing music. Slow Glows' shoegaze is quite from the top league and as for a top league shoegaze band is appropriate, they have a Rachel.

Their characteristic trait is the vocal that can be both dreamy and quite pugnacious, even within one song (like in the opening "December"), and slow pace measured by clear hits of drums. Both of them make the impression that Slow Glows play basically very much slowed down grrrl punk's music.

The band wants to send positive vibes to the world. They surely do send the dreamy-trance-inducing ones.

EPeczka shoegazerowców z Ohio, którzy zgodnie z nazwą grają muzykę niespieszną choć rozświetloną. Shoegaze Slow Glows jest bardzo wysokich lotów. I jak na porządny shoegaze'owy zespół przystało SG ma w składzie Rachel.

Charakterystyczną cechą ich muzyki jest wokal, który potrafi być zarówno rozmarzony jak i całkiem zadziorny - nawet w obrębie jednego utworu (jak w otwierającym EPkę "December") oraz wolne tempo mierzone powolnymi i wyraźnymi uderzeniami perkusji. Obie powodują, że muzyki Slow Glows słucha się nieco jak spowolnionych kawałków żeńskich kapel punkowych.

Zespół chce wysyłać pozytywne wibracje światu, z pewnością wysyła te wywołujące senne wizje.

To Destroy A City - Go Mirage (2017) EN

"Go Mirage" is the third album by post-rockers from Chicago (or, as they describe themselves, cinematic rockers), the biggest difference in comparison to the previous ones is the use of vocals. Although band does what they can to justify this decision, listing post-rock legends who did it as well (Mogwai or Caspian), my opinion is that they don't have to worry so much. Their music is only more interesting and richer.

Especially that the vocal is delicate and extremely moody, its dreamy sound together with great deal of electronic music make them sound more shoegazeish (for example, "Never To Return" could easily be a song by Slowdive). Apart from that, considering that the music comes with the wall of electronic-guitar sound, I find it going together with so much liked on this blog 93millionmilesfromthesun.

The whole album is made to be nostalgic and melancholic. There's no shortage of mesmerizing sound trances and this dense and at the same time loud sound. The vocal is treated here as just another layer of sound that is a part of the complex music by the Americans. Go Mirage!

To Destroy A City - Go Mirage (2017) PL

"Go Mirage" to trzeci album post-rockowców z Chicago (tudzież, jak sami piszą, muzyków cinematic rocka), najważniejszą różnicą jest pojawienie się w ich muzyce wokalu. I o ile na swojej stronie zespół bardzo mocno się z tej zmiany tłumaczy przywołując przykłady tuzów post-rocka, którzy przeszli podobną drogę (Mogwai czy Caspian) to moim zdaniem nie ma z czego. Muzyka na pewno na tym zyskała.

Zwłaszcza, ze wokal jest łagodny i niezwykle nastrojowy, jego rozmarzone brzmienie w połączeniu z dużą dawką elektroniki w muzyce To Destroy A City sprawia, że ich muzyka zmierza w stronę shoegaze'u (takie "Never To Return" mogłoby znaleźć się w repertuarze Slowdive). Oprócz tego, biorąc pod uwagę nadciągające ścianą dźwięków brzmienie ich kompleksowej, elektroniczno gitarowej muzyki, nasuwa mi się skojarzenie z lubianym na moim blogu 93millionmilesfromthesun

Cała płyta utrzymana jest w nostalgicznym, melancholijnym nastroju. Nie brakuje hipnotyzujących dźwiękowych transów i tego gęstego i jednocześnie głośnego brzmienia, a wspomniany wokal traktowany jest jako kolejna warstwa dźwięku dokładająca się do złożonego brzmienia muzyki Amerykanów. Go Mirage!

The Underground Youth - What Kind Of Dystopian Hellhole Is This? (2017) EN

The album referring to the popular quite recently movies about dystopian worlds is not exactly new, it was released in February but it's so good that makes the release date quite a secondary issue.

The band balances between post-punk, shoegaze and post-punk and adds this difficult to define focus on making their music. It starts with unbelievably calm "Half Poison/Half God" and when you think it's just a lull before the storm there goes the song number one of the album, "Alice", and it's.... just as delicate. This way of singing and making music is what characterizes the Underground Youth but it also doesn't mean their songs are not catchy ones, "Alice" for instance is really good to hum.

Don't misunderstand me, the music of the Underground Youth has also a lot of dark tension inside, as the, uniquely intriguing title of the album suggests. It is created mostly by the deep vocal that makes me think of the American gothic by Black Heart Procession (especially great in "A Dirty Piece Of Love For Us To Share"). The album fits perfectly the dystopian hellholes around the world.

The Underground Youth - What Kind Of Dystopian Hellhole Is This? (2017) PL

Album nawiązujący tytułem do popularnych jeszcze niedawno filmów o antyutopiach nie jest do końca nowy, wydany został bowiem w lutym tego roku. Niemniej jest na tyle godny uwagi, że tak nieistotne sprawy jak data wydania schodzą na dalszy plan. 

Zespół balansuje pomiędzy post-punkiem, shoegaze'em i wave'em, a do tego dokłada trudną do zdefiniowania uwagę z jaką przekazuje swoją muzykę. Zaczyna się wyjątkowo spokojnym "Half Poison/Half God" i gdy wydaje się, że jest to tylko cisza przed burzą nadciąga hicior albumu, "Alice", i jest on... niemal tak samo delikatny. Ten sposób śpiewania i grania wyróżnia the Underground Youth, a do tego wcale nie zwalnia ich z pisania chwytliwych kompozycji, "Alice" nuci się bardzo dobrze.

Nie należy przy tym źle nie zrozumieć, muzyka na krążku ma też w sobie dużo mrocznego napięcia, tak jak, wyjątkowo intrygujący, tytuł płyty wskazuje. Dodaje go przede wszystkim głęboki wokal budzący skojarzenia na przykład z amerykańskim gotykiem Black Heart Procession (świetny w "A Dirty Piece Of Love For Us To Share"). Krążek w sam raz do tego antyutopijnego grajdołka.

Холодные Ладони - Крайности (2017) EN

According to my modest experience with this genre, the combination of rap with heavy guitar music is rarely a good way to go. What's more, Холодные Ладони is also a very exotic project as everything is in Russian. Not being able to understand the message is certainly an obstacle but we can look at other aspects and they all seem quite interesting.

Холодные Ладони' hip-hop sounds very traditional, there's no room for poetic recitation or unnecessary effects, if there were beats instead of the guitar background, it could go easily for a Russian hip-hop underground. Still, the rapping capabilities of the artist are truly impressive as the lyrics pass by in such a speed, even Russian speakers may have problems with understanding them at once (as in "Лабиринт").

I regret not understanding the lyrics but there's still music. Here on the other hand, if it was separated from the vocal, we'd get a top-shelf guitar post-rock. The one that is not smooth in any way, quite on the contrary. The guitars are aggressive and fast but also go very well with the unnatural company of hip-hop. Although the name of the project doesn't mean anything pleasant (as Холодные Ладони literally means cold hands and everyone knows how difficult the phenomenon is), the music is really worth listening to.

Według mojego skromnego doświadczenia z taka muzyką połączenie rapu z ciężką muzyką gitarową rzadko okazuje się udane. A Холодные Ладони dodatkowo jest dopiero egzotycznym projektem bo wszystko jest po rosyjsku. Niezrozumienie przekazu jest z pewnością sporym kłopotem ale mogę popatrzeć na inne kwestie - i wszystkie one wypadają bardzo dobrze.

Hip-hop Холодные Ладони brzmi niezwykle tradycyjnie, nie ma w nim miejsca na poetycką recytację czy niepotrzebne efekty, gdyby zamiast gitar podłożyć podeń bity, pewnie nie zwróciłbym na niego uwagi ale byłby to błąd. Należy też przyznać, że artysta potrafi rapować bardzo szybko, za tekstem w "Лабиринт" pewnie nawet rosyjskojęzyczni mogą mieć problem nadążyć. 

Żałuję, że nie rozumiem słów ale jest jeszcze muzyka. Tutaj z kolei, gdyby oddzielić ją od wokalu, byłby to wysokiej jakości gitarowy post-rock. W żaden sposób nie ułagodzony, raczej wręcz przeciwnie. Gitary są drapieżne i szybkie a jednocześnie dość dobrze współgrają z nienaturalnym towarzystwem hip-hopu. Mimo że nazwa projektu nie oznacza nic przyjemnego (bo Холодные Ладони znaczy chłodne dłonie - każdy wie jak trudne jest to zjawisko) to muzyki słucha się znakomicie.

Richard Neale - EVES (2017) EN

With his new album, Richard Neale, an artist from the southern England, opens up a coffer of condensed sadness and beauty. Seven tracks melting souls with delicate keys and dreampop compositions with surprising, otherworldly backing chorals.

I haven't heard a more delicate vocal in a while. Neale's voice sounds like a velvet veil - airy and extremely sad. In "Somewhere in the Dead of Night" it is accompanied by backing vocals sounding like a choir of dreamy sleepwalkers that in "Young Adult" reaches the almost heavenly spheres. The contrast between the sound of choir and the whispering, or maybe recited, vocal parts is what makes the biggest impact on the audience.

The album was created as a playlist of improvised piano pieces that evolved into a mixture of "whispered folk, choral, ambient, post rock and subtle electronics.". It is absolutely right 0 the neoclassical piano, sounds of glockenspiel and ambient backgrounds are our company throughout the whole album and they are joined by, sometimes quite harsh, guitars ("Wave of Indifference").

Richard Neale - EVES (2017) PL

Richard Neale, artysta z południowej Anglii, otwiera swoją nową płytą szkatułę skondensowanego smutku i piękna. Siedem utworów roztapiających duszę delikatnymi klawiszami pianina i dreampopowymi aranżacjami zaskakującymi nieziemskimi chórami.

Dawno nie słyszałem delikatniejszego wokalu. Głos Neale'a brzmi jak aksamitna woalka - delikatny i przesmutny. W "Somewhere in the Dead of Night" towarzyszy mu chór niczym w czasie mszy rozmarzonych lunatyków, który w "Young Adult" przechodzi w sfery niemalże niebiańskie. Kontrast między brzmieniem chóru i szeptanymi, a czasem w zasadzie recytowanymi fragmentami wokalu jest tym, co robi największe wrażenie.

Album miał powstać jako zbiór improwizacji na pianinie, który wyewoluował w mieszankę "szeptanego folku, chórów, ambientu, post-rocku i subtelnej elektroniki". Wszystko się jak najbardziej zgadza - neoklasyczne pianino, dźwięki dzwonków i ambientowe tła są stałymi towarzyszami na płycie, a dołączają do nich miejscami nawet dość surowe dźwięki gitary ("Wave of Indifference").

Holy Hum - All Of My Bodies (2017) EN

Holy Hum is Andrew Yong Hoon Lee, a universal artist who alongside creating sounds, has also exhibited his works in, e.g.,  the Vancouver Art Gallery. As a musician he has played with Siskiyou and In Medias Res and had a show on Primavera. This time he shows his solo project and, boy, is it awesome.

I'm under impression that it's his way to deal with his Asian origins but I can't really decipher the album cover. What I know though is that his music is really touching. Lee's vocal is full of sadness, longing and melancholia, sounds beautiful e.g. in the perfect "Flowers In The Snow" where it is accompanied by a female vocal (this time it's Kathryn Calder's). Another thing is that there's a lot of guests on the album - both vocalists and musicians playing flute, piano, cello or clarinet.

The whole thing is a mixture of sounds that are so different (from the lamenting strings to epic drums in the backgrounds) that it's super surprising how well they resonate together and how big their influence on the audience is. All of them are great: the lyrical songs, the high-paced ones ("Sex At 31") and those that drowns in an ambient-drone sea ("Joseph Pt. 2") or the one with spine-thrilling backing vocals ("White Buzz"). The album is infinitely complex, it's one of those that have to be listened to all over again.

Holy Hum to Andrew Yong Hoon Lee, artysta uniwersalny, oprócz tworzenia dźwięków wystawiał też m.in. w Vancouver Art Gallery. Jako muzyk grał z Siskiyou i In Medias Res, występował też m.in. na Primaverze. Tym razem pokazuje swój solowy projekt i, serio, jest zachwycający.

Mam wrażenie, że rozlicza się na nim ze swoim azjatyckimi korzeniami ale niestety nie potrafię rozszyfrować okładki. Wiem natomiast, że jego muzyka jest niezwykle poruszająca. Wokal Lee pełen jest smutku, tęsknoty i melancholii, pięknie brzmi na przykład w doskonałym "Flowers In The Snow", gdzie również towarzyszy mu kobiecy wokal (w tym przypadku Kathryn Calder). Zresztą gości jest dużo więcej - zarówno wokalistki jak i muzycy grający na flecie, pianinie, wiolonczeli i klarnecie.

Całość to mieszanka dźwięków tak różnych (od zawodzących smyczków po epickie kotły w tłach), że aż dziw bierze jak doskonale są ze sobą zespolone i jak bardzo oddziałują na słuchacza. Świetnie brzmią zarówno kawałki liryczne jak i te wyposażone w wyraźne tętno ("Sex At 31") i te tonące w ambientowo-drone'owym morzu ("Joseph Pt. 2") czy w końcu pełne melancholijnych chórków powodujących dreszcze ("White Buzz"). Całość jest nieskończenie złożona, jeden z tych albumów, które należy słuchać i słuchać.

Paosin The Well - Garasu No Kokoro / ガラスの心 (2017) EN

Paosin The Well, mysterious artists from the Philippines, creates an intimate mixture of ambient, dub and... poetry for people with glass hearts (as suggested by the album's title, ガラスの心 in Japanese means exactly a glass heart). She draws attention like a powerful magnet and amazes with her original ways of art.

The poems recited by the singer with accompanying electronic music inspires the audience with both their message and form. Not only do they tell what the situation in the poet's head is in a very intimate way (quite literary in "Inside A Mad Girl's Head") but also are perfectly fitted for a rhythmic though not very fast recitation, just like the good hip-hop lyrics. Sometimes it's clear and served literary, sometimes well distorted and atmospheric  ("A New Beginning").

And the accompanying electronics consist of ambient backgrounds as flexible as the water surface that are overwritten only by subtle melodies played with keys and beats appearing out of nowhere (as in "Little Isabel (Don't Fret)").

Paosin The Well - Garasu No Kokoro / ガラスの心 (2017) PL

Paosin The Well, zagadkowa artystka z Filipin tworzy intymną mieszankę ambientu, dubu i... poezji dla ludzi o szklanych sercach (co sugeruje tytuł płyty, ガラスの心 to właśnie szklane serce po japońsku). Nie pozwala przejść obok siebie obojętnie i urzeka oryginalnością.

Wiersze, które artystka recytuje do wtóru elektroniki zadziwiają zarówno tematyką jak i formą. Nie dość, że w sposób bardzo intymny wykładają co się dzieje w głowie poetki (całkiem dosłownie w "Inside A Mad Girl's Head") to jeszcze na modłę kawałków hip-hopowych znakomicie nadają się do rytmicznej choć niezbyt szybkiej melorecytacji. Czasem jest wyraźna i dosłownie podana, czasem umiejętnie zniekształcona i klimatyczna ("A New Beginning").

A towarzyszy im nastrojowa elektronika, w której ambientowe tła brzmiące jak napinająca się powierzchnia wody przekrzykiwane są jedynie przez subtelne melodie wygrywane na klawiszach i pojawiające się znikąd bity (jak w "Little Isabel (Don't Fret)").

Sadness Isolation - Tragic (2017) EN

Latin America should bring connotations with heat but my music discoveries indicate something else, it is a kingdom of cold wave. Today, another example of this is Sadness Isolation created by Daniel Rossier from Peru.

The characteristic trait of his is combination of coldness, darkness and high pace. Apart from the deep voice and whispers that appear out of nowhere, darkness is suggested by the depressive image and lyrics. The name of the project is quite clear - the isolation caused by sadness may lead to creation of great art and the gloomy Rossier is a perfect example of this claim.

The coldness is almost everywhere in this album. From the cold-blooded vocal to flat and clear bass line and the synth backgrounds making the whole thing very suggestive. While it's all true, the tracks are also surprisingly fast, very often almost disco-like if there's someone who likes such dark discos. The most important though is that, as it's the artist's goal, his music contemplates the 80s like a not very distant yesterday.

Sadness Isolation - Tragic (2017) PL

Ameryka Łacińska powinna kojarzyć się z gorącem, tymczasem moje muzyczne odkrycia mówią co innego, to królestwo zimnego wave'u. Kolejnym przedstawicielem jest dziś peruwiańskie Sadness Isolation tworzone przez Daniela Rossiera.

Jego znakiem rozpoznawczym jest połączenie zimna, mroku i tempa. Oprócz głębokiego głosu, pojawiających się czasem znienacka szeptów mroczne są przede wszystkim depresyjny imydż i teksty utworów. Nazwa projektu to dość jasny przekaz - izolacja spowodowana smutkiem potrafi prowadzić do wspaniałej sztuki, mroczny Rossier jest na to dobrym przykładem.

Zimne na tej płycie jest niemal wszystko. Od zimnokrwistego wokalu przez płaski ale wyraźny bas po nadające całości wyrazu warstwy syntezatorowego dźwięku. Tymczasem utwory są zaskakująco szybkie, często prawie dyskotekowe, jeśli ktoś lubi tak mroczne dyskoteki. Najważniejsze jednak, że tak jak chce artysta, jego muzyka kontempluje lata 80. jako nie tak odległe w czasie wczoraj.

Vast Asteroid - Vast Asteroid (2017) EN

Everyone knows what California is for the genre of music that collide on the orbits of shoegaze and dreampop. The new star on this constellation has just been claimed by a trio James Poulos, Mark Reback and Mimi (indeed) Star, or Vast Asteroid. Their first self-titled LP has been released just days ago but you can already tell how full of stars their spacerock is.

The album is a mixture of dense, guitar music with a very go-ahead approach to shoegaze. Although the band came from this direction, both the way they build up their tracks and the surf rock or maybe just rock way of singing give their music this top shelf catchiness. It is clearly visible in songs like  "Vivid Dream" in which the guitars are far from the gloomy power of shoegaze and the vocal from dreampop whispering.

Everything I wrote loses importance with the last track on the playlist, the 15-minutes-long "Spacegaze". As the title promises, Vast Asteroid take us to the space of guitar sounds, backgrounds and amazing subtle keys only to drown in the ocean of noise at the end.

Vast Asteroid - Vast Asteroid (2017) PL

Każdy wie czym jest Kalifornia dla rozmarzonych gatunków muzyki z przecinających się orbit shoegaze'u i dreampopu. Nową gwiazdką w tej konstelacji zostaje właśnie tercet James Poulos, Mark Reback i Mimi (nomen omen) Star czyli Vast Asteroid. Swoją pierwszą płytę długogrającą, zatytułowaną tak samo jak projekt, wydali kilka dni temu ale już można powiedzieć jak bardzo rozgwieżdżony spacerock się na niej znajduje.

Płyta to mieszanka gęstego gitarowego grania z bardzo przebojowym podejściem do shoegaze'u. Mimo że to właśnie od niego grupa wchodziła, zarówno sposób w jaki budują swoje kawałki, a także surf rockowy a może po prostu rockowy wokal dodają tej muzyce wysokiej jakości czadu. Bardzo widać to w takich kawałkach jak "Vivid Dream", gdzie gitarom daleko od ponurej mocy gitar shoegaze'owych a wokalowi od szeptów dreampopu.

Wszystko to traci jednak na aktualności w czasie ostatniego, niemal piętnastominutowego "Spacegaze". Tak jak obiecuje tytuł, Vast Asteroid zabierają nas w kosmos gitarowych dźwięków, teł i fantastycznie delikatnych klawiszy by w końcu utonąć w oceanie noise'u.

Chihei Hatakeyama - Maybe (2017) EN

Chihei Hatakeyama, artist of ambient music from Tokyo, has just released another extremely moody and extremely experimental album. With music like this people tend to call his works an example of post-ambient.

The official story says that he got inspiration to write "Maybe" while having a walk on an old battlefield place called Sekigahara during a rainy day. The melancholy of this music made him decide to translate this feelings into ambient tones. In the end we got a symphony played with almost impossibly slowed down sounds of synthesizer and electric guitar. The effect is an hour of painful beauty.

Chihei Hatakeyama - Maybe (2017) PL

Chihei Hatakeyama, artysta ambientu z Tokyo wydał właśnie kolejny niezwykle nastrojowy i niezwykle eksperymentalny album, dzięki takim jak ten jego muzyka nazywana jest nawet post-ambientem.

Oficjalna wersja mówi, że wpadł na pomysł "Maybe" przechadzając się po parku pamięci Sekigahara w czasie deszczowego dnia. Melancholia tego miejsca i pogody sprawiła, że postanowił przelać te uczucie na ambientowe nuty. Wyszła z tego długa symfonia zagrana na spowolnione do granic możliwości dźwięki syntezatora i gitary elektrycznej. W efekcie otrzymaliśmy godzinę bolesnego piękna.

Francesco Berta - The Year of the Wolf (2017) EN

Quite recently I wrote about him as a part of the musicformessier's project |Eclipse". Now, based in London Italian, Francesco Berta, after releasing a few singles this year, has published an EP "The Year of the Wolf".

The album is supposed to channel Berta's "confidence and insecurities", it is "warm, a bit obscure, wildly experimental and hiding an unexpected gentle nature". Anyone who'll listen to the album with attention should agree with this description by the autor. Quite well noticeable is also the lo-fi'ness of the recordings that have been made with old recorders. One of many uniquely sounding features here.

And there was so much to record - the album includes not only Berta's piano and electronic sounds but also flute, bassoon, violins, cello and viola. Electronic music served in a very serious way. This blending of the classic and modern makes his music popular in advertisement industry. The last EP underlines it especially in "The Longest Year" and its quite strongly stressed pace and in my favourite track: "You Held the World in your Arms" sounding in some parts like Clint Mansell's "Moon" OST.

Francesco Berta - The Year of the Wolf (2017) PL

Niedawno gościł na blogu jako część projektu musicformessier - "Eclipse". Teraz tworzący w Londynie Włoch, Francesco Berta, po kilku tegorocznych singlach wydaje swoją EPkę "The Year of the Wolf".

Album odzwierciedla zarówno pewność siebie Berty jak i jego zwątpienia w siebie, ma być muzyką ciepłą, eksperymentalną i w swej naturze łagodną. Każdy, kto jej w skupieniu wysłucha z pewnością przyzna rację temu opisowi samego muzyka. Słychać w niej wyraźnie celową lo-fi'owość nagrań, które Berta uskuteczniał na starych magnetofonach. Dodaje to unikalności brzmieniu EPki. 

A było co nagrywać - na płycie pojawia się nie tylko pianino i elektronika Berty ale także flet, fagot, skrzypce, wiolonczela i altówka. Elektronika potraktowana na bardzo serio. Ta mieszanka klasyki i nowatorstwa sprawia, że po muzykę artysty sięgają często reklamodawcy. Na ostatniej EPce rzuca się ona w uszy zwłaszcza w "The Longest Year" i jego wyraźnie wyakcentowanym tętnie i w moim ulubionym "You Held the World in your Arms" miejscami brzmiące jak Clint Mansell i jego ścieżka dźwiękowa do "Moona".

Keira Is You - Free Floating Anxiety (2017) EN

When I was young, the Trójka Polish Radio searched for new, Polish bands, in the finale stage I remember keeping my fingers crossed for Hariasen, a band I saw as a Polish reply to Brian Molko's Placebo. I was fascinated by their magic, emotional sound and mystery around them. Hariasen is no more but its frontman, Jakub Radomski, is part of Keira Is You now.

He now writes the lyrics in English but, as expected, they are still full of emotions. Mostly about the one hunting so many of us: anxiety. Both music, blending of raw post-rock with atmospheric dreampop, and Radomski's filled with neurotic sadness voice make it easier to focus on such emotions. Not to mention the acoustic soul of the music that makes the whole thing very much intimate. 

Some of tricks used on the album are absolutely worth being amazed over - like delicate backing vocals in "Free Floating Anxiety", synth backgrounds in one of the best tracks here, "Serotonin Ends" or long composition of "Drifting on the New Sea" that spreads over just like a real sea. It's quite obvious that the Polish from KIY know how to get inside a listener's head and they do not hesitate to use this knowledge. Sad and beautiful.

Keira Is You - Free Floating Anxiety (2017) PL

Gdy byłem młody w radiowej Trójce szukano polskiego alternatywnego odkrycia, w finale zabawy pamiętam ściskanie kciuków za Hariasen, w którym widziałem rodzimą odpowiedź na Placebo Briana Molki - fascynowała mnie ich magia, pełen emocji głos i tajemnica wokół zespołu. Hariasenu już nie ma ale jego lider Jakub Radomski tworzy w Keira Is You.

Teraz teksty pisze po angielsku ale, jak należało się spodziewać, one też aż kipią od emocji. Najwięcej poświęconych jest nękającym tak wielu z nas stanom lękowym. Zarówno muzyka, która jest mieszaniną chropowatego post-rocku z nastrojowym dreampopem jak i przepełniony neurotycznym smutkiem wokal Radomskiego sprzyjają ich roztrząsaniu. Nie bez znaczenia jest też akustyczny sznyt dodający całości intymności.

Kilka chwytów zasługuje na najwyższe uznanie - jak delikatne chórki w utworze tytułowym czy syntezatorowe tła w znakomitym "Serotonin Ends" albo też długa kompozycja "Drifting on the New Sea", ciągnąca się w nieskończoność jak tytułowe morze. Widać, że Polacy z KIY wiedzą jak dostać się do głowy słuchacza i nie wahają się tej wiedzy użyć. Smutnie i pięknie.

MMTH - Paternoster (2017) EN

Friends of Magma Waves that has been a revelation of the post-rock side of this blog this year, they are also from Germany, they also play loud, aggressively guitar instrumental music. Perhaps more rampageous, definitely more stoner-rock - MMTH's "Paternoster" is a well-crafted debut album.

They make noise with all the power of their guitars - it is well-heard in the final part of "Big Mouth" in which they throw punches at the audience like an experienced boxer would only to show mercy with the delicate intro to "Souvenirs". The repetitious punches are a characteristic trait of the band on this album, they underline it while describing their music with "at the beginning you hear pulse". Sometimes it's furious "(It takes two to) Tango", sometimes slower (in the epic "Träumen Wale vom Fliegen").

The musicians used to play various genres of music - from pop up to progressive rock, MMTH is their first approach to instrumental music. A very good one too. They are focused on guitar sounds that can be both deafening and thoughts-provoking (recommended here is "A Thousand Years"). It is also clear that the band is interested in football as with the last track's title they comment on the modern football world's transfer market situation.

MMTH - Paternoster (2017) PL

Znajomi Magma Waves, który okazał się rewelacją post-rockowej strony tego bloga w tym roku, też są z Niemiec, też grają głośną, agresywnie gitarową muzykę instrumentalną. Być może bardziej drapieżni, najpewniej bardziej stoner-rockowi - MMTH udanie debiutuje albumem "Paternoster".

Hałasują ile mają mocy w gitarach - świetnie słuchać to w finale "Big Mouth", w którym sprzedają publice ciosy jak wytrawny bokser by w końce skrócić jego cierpienia łagodnym wstępem do "Souvenirs". Zresztą powtarzające się uderzenia to znak rozpoznawczy zespołu na płycie, sami komentują swoją muzykę zaczynając od słów "najpierw słychać puls". Czasem jest on szybki "(It takes two to) Tango", czasem wolniejszy (epickie  "Träumen Wale vom Fliegen").

Muzycy zespołu grali do tej pory w zupełnie innych gatunkach, od popu po rock progresywny. MMTH to ich pierwszy raz z muzyką instrumentalną, bardzo udany trzeba dodać, koncentrują się na dźwiękach gitar którymi potrafią zarówno ogłuszyć jak i wprawić w zadumę (polecam do tego "A Thousand Years"). Widać też, że zespół jest fanami piłki nożnej - tytułem ostatniego utworu komentują oni bowiem rozbuchany rynek transferowy współczesnego futbolowego świata.

Old Seas / Young Mountains - Seasons (2017) EN

Probably it is too early for me to write about "Seasons" by the Swedish duo Old Seas / Young Mountains. It's because, as you may have guessed, the album is going to be about seasons and it is being released as separate EPs - the first one was the spring one, the third and the last so far - autumn. The winter one is missing but this music is so good it just couldn't wait.

OS/YM is created by Linus Andersson and Adam Jacobsson who play guitar post-rock that can build up a unique atmosphere: there's not so much of the deafening wall of sounds, more like keys, trembling sounds and ambiance. And it is a concept album so the April part is full of light keys coming out of the dense guitar background, just like spring flowers from the snow, the August one brings singing birds and lively synth sounds while the one from October - less pleasant music sounding as the titles suggest, like northern wind. I'm pretty curious about the final EP.

"Four Seasons" by Vivaldi? Almost there, certainly really atmospheric post-rock from the north.

Old Seas / Young Mountains - Seasons (2017) PL

Prawdopodobnie zbyt szybko zabieram się do pisania o "Seasons" szwedzkiego duetu Old Seas / Young Mountains. A to dlatego, że, jak można się spodziewać, ma on opowiadać o porach roku i wydawany jest jako epki - pierwsza była wiosenna, ostatnia jesienna. Brakuje czwartej, zimowej, ale muzyka jest na nich tak dobra, że ciężko mi było zwlekać.

OS/YM to Linus Andersson i Adam Jacobsson tworzą gitarowy post-rock, który buduje swój klimat: nie ma w nim zbyt wiele z ogłuszających ścian dźwięku, jest za to dużo dzwonków, klawiszy i tona atmosfery. A przy tym jest to concept album. I tak muzyka w części kwietniowej pełna jest jasnych klawiszy wyłaniających się z gęstego, gitarowego tła jak przebiśniegi, w części sierpniowej słyszymy świergoczące ptaki i pełne życia synthowe tła, a w tej z października - mniej przyjemne, mroczniejsze dźwięki, niczym tytułowy północny wiatr. Ciekawe, co znajdzie się w części zimowej.

"Cztery pory roku" Vivaldiego? No prawie, z pewnością bardzo klimatyczny post-rock z północy.

Każda EPka kosztuje tyle ile zdecydujesz się zapłacić.

Christoffer Franzen of Lights & Motion - Phenomenon (2017) EN

Christoffer Franzen, one of those Scandinavian artists who was born to generate feelings, who transforms cold, northern landscapes into beautiful notes, who is a musical genius. Known from his solo project Lights & Motion Franzen decided to release his new album with his surname on the cover. And his inspiration came form a non-existing movie in need of a soundtrack.

The album is full of magic generated on the piano keys and with this delicate, airy hum in the background. The track that stole my heart was, indeed, "Hollowed Heart". It shows that a song about a heart being broken doesn't have to have lyrics or a cringeworthy chorus. It can be a condensed sadness, so deep that it becomes beautiful. Franzen can be both intimate and pompous ("Illuminate") or even sink into a real ambient sea ("Elysian Fields").

This soundtrack to a non-existing movie is so good that it may be a good idea to hire the Swede to work with a regular one. The one by Ólafur was a success so...

Christoffer Franzen of Lights & Motion - Phenomenon (2017) PL

Christoffer Franzen, jeden z tych skandynawskich artystów, który narodził się by wzbudzać uczucia, który przekuwa zimne, nordyckie krajobrazy w przepiękne nuty, który jest genialnym muzykiem. Znany przede wszystkim ze swojego solowego projektu Lights and Motion, Franzen kolejny album postanowił wydać pod swoim nazwiskiem. A za inspirację wziął sobie nieistniejący film, który potrzebował ścieżki dźwiękowej.

Płyta pełna jest magii generowanej na klawiszach pianina i delikatnym, eterycznym szumie w tle. Kawałkiem, który skradł moje serce jest, nomen omen, "Hollowed Heart". Pokazuje on, że piosenka o zranionym sercu nie musi mieć słów ani obciachowego refrenu. Może byś skondensowanym smutkiem - tak dogłębnym, że aż pięknym. Franzen potrafi być zarówno intymny jak i całkiem podniosły ("Illuminate") a nawet zupełnie odpłynąć w ambienty ("Elysian Fields").

Ścieżka dźwiękowa do nieistniejącego filmu jest tak dobra, że być może warto byłoby zatrudnienie Szweda przy produkcji prawdziwego obrazu. OST Ólafura był strzałem w dziesiątkę.

Palm Haze - Tangy Dream (2017) EN

Sound that is both heavy and smooth from Vancouver - this is Anna Wagner and Lucas Inacio or Palm Haze. They play surf rockish songs coupled with airy shoegaze and trip-hop, can't say for sure if their music is more catchy or dreamy. They released a long EP or short LP this September, the first release of the band.

What is "Tangible Dream" about? Let's ask the artists themselves: "you know that feeling when you’re outside (briefly) and it’s warm, but just warm enough. Your skin is being lightly kissed by the sun and you're almost falling asleep. You remember your past, but you're still on the present, daydreaming of a nostalgic and tangible future. Feels tangible, feels tangy, feels dreamy".

The album starts with loud and sunny dreampop that can be hummed but also may make you feel falling into this sleepy trance until some fragments bring you back to reality, as in "It Follows" the ending of which suddenly starts galloping. And later on, "Beautiful Island" is an interesting play between noisy shoegaze and trip-hop pace and the further you go in the album, the more trip-hop it gets (see: "Cloudscraper")! Intriguing, no doubt.

Palm Haze - Tangy Dream (2017) PL

Dźwięk jednocześnie ciężki i gładki z kanadyjskiego Vancouver - oto Anna Wagner i Lucas Inacio czyli Palm Haze. Grają kawałki surf rockowe sparowane z eterycznym shoegaze'em i trip-hopem, trudno samodzielnie określić, czy więcej jest w nich przebojowości czy rozmarzenia. We wrześniu wydali długą epkę albo krótki album, pierwszy w swoim dorobku.

O czym jest "Tangible Dream"? Oddajmy głos artystom: "znasz to uczucie, gdy jesteś na dworze i jest ciepło, idealnie ciepło. Twoją skórę całuje lekko słońce i znajdujesz się na skraju snu. Pamiętasz przeszłość ale wciąż jesteś w teraźniejszości i śnisz o nostalgicznej, dotykalnej przyszłości Jest materialna, jest cierpka, jest senna".

Płyta zaczyna się słonecznym i głośnym dreampopem, który nie dość, że da się zanucić to jeszcze faktycznie można przy nim odpłynąć, póki kilka fragmentów nie przywoła nas do rzeczywistości, jak "It Follows", który kończy się niespodziewanym zrywem do galopu. Tymczasem "Beautiful Islands" to ciekawa gra między hałaśliwym shoegaze'em a trip-hopowym tętnem utworu a im dalej  na płycie tym elektroniczne naleciałości są tylko wyraźniejsze (patrz: "Cloudscraper")! Intrygujące, bez dwóch zdań.

SPC ECO - Calm (2017) EN

Rose Berlin and Dean Garcia are particularly fertile artists, new music by SPC ECO can be stumbled upon every now and then, I did in 2012 when I listened to "Dark Notes" and it wasn't their debut at all! Far from it! The most important though is that they are always on their well-established good level.

This level is situated somewhere between the trip-hop a'la Ivy ("Out of Sight" sounds like it could be inspired by "Worry About You") or Archive's "Londinium" and delicate sounding dreampop that speaks directly to your subconscious. Their characteristic marks are Berlin's airy voice (that reaches the ether climax in "All I Had") and the whole music around the dreamy-cosmic sound of which is perfectly depicted in the project's name (as it is pronounced as space echo).

Quite recently I posted some words about Jarek Leśkiewicz and his project called Opollo, the artist comes back here sooner than I anticipated as he had his part in creating "Calm" programming the ambiance or like in "Waking Up Again" - being responsible for more than that.

SPC ECO - Calm (2017) PL

Rose Berlin i Dean Garcia to niezwykle płodni muzycy, na nowe utwory brytyjskiego SPC ECO natknąć się można co i rusz, ja pierwszy raz zrobiłem to w 2012 słuchając "Dark Notes", a to przecież nie był ich debiut! Daleko od tego! Najważniejsze jednak, że duet nigdy nie schodzi poniżej ustalonego, dobrego poziomu.

Poziom ten leży gdzieś między trip-hopem spod znaku Ivy ("Out of Sight" brzmi jak inspirowane "Worry About You") czy "Londinium" Archive a dreampopem o łagodnym, przemawiającym do podświadomości brzmieniu. Ich cechami charakterystycznym jest eteryczny głos Berlin (który eteryczne szczyty osiąga w "All I Had") i cała jego muzyczna otoczka, której senno-kosmiczne brzmienie jest doskonale odzwierciedlone w nazwie zespołu (space echo, tak to się wymawia).

Nie tak dawno na blogu pisałem o Jarku Leśkiewiczu i jego Opollo i artysta wraca tu szybciej niż się spodziewałem bowiem maczał palce, a nawet całe garści, w tworzeniu "Calm"  programując tła a w "Waking Up Again" robiąc jeszcze więcej dobrej roboty.
