cursetheknife - Thank You for Being Here Pt I & II (2020) EN

A great discovery, debuts like this one really inspire me. Cursetheknife is a trio out of Oklahoma who just released their two-parts album Thank You for Being Here and with it, a great deal of fresh and very well done shoegaze.

Everything begins with an introduction played on violins but it's a trap, the whole albums is very guitar-oriented and in its noise rock soul, quite traditional. It's expressed already in Feeling Real - with everything we love about the genre: seducing melodies dirtied up by the loud and noisy guitars and sang by the more or less ethereal vocals. What is unbelievable is the quality of this music - both the ideas and the execution that put them very close to bands like Nothing (this guitar chorus in Feeling Real!). Tracks with similarly high potential to become hits include also Low and Filter with its very shoegazy noise with My Bloody Valentine's vibes.

The second part is a tiny bit weaker but songs like In Dreams, in which shoegaze meets lively electronics, or the title track Thank You for Being Here would be a big deal on albums by some more famous artists. Great debut and I'm instantly a fan of the Americans now.

Wspaniałe odkrycie, takie debiuty mnie inspirują. Cursetheknife to trio z Oklahomy, które wydało właśnie dwuczęściowy album Thank You for Being Here, a na nim kawał świeżego i bardzo dobrego shoegaze'u.

Wszystko zaczyna się przygrywką na skrzypcach, ale jest to zwodnicze bo cały materiał jest bardzo mocno gitarowy i w swojej noise-rockowej duszy bardzo tradycyjny. Muzycy dają temu wyraz już w Feeling Real - a na nim klasyka gatunku: uwodzące melodie zabrudzone głośnymi i noise'owymi gitarami wyśpiewane mniej lub bardziej eterycznymi wokalami. Zachwyca natomiast jakość - zarówno pomysłów jak i wykonania, która stawia zespół bardzo blisko takich zespołów jak Nothing (ten gitarowy refren w Feeling Real!). Kawałki o podobnie dużym potencjale na zostanie hitem to również Low i Filter o bardzo shoegaze'owym noise'ie w stylu My Bloody Valentine.

Druga część jest trochę słabsza, ale takie kawałki jak In Dreams, w którym shoegaze spotyka żwawą i taneczną elektronikę czy tytułowy Thank You for Being Here byłyby wydarzeniem na niejednej płycie bardziej uznanych wykonawców. Świetny debiut i z miejsca staję się fanem Amerykanów.

Endless Forms - More Than Candy (2020) PL

Endless Forms to projekt Justina Allena, który opisuje go jako "OK dream pop". Poprzedni album opisywałem na blogu w 2017 roku, gdy projekt był jeszcze trio. Teraz Allen samemu wydaje nową płytę i trzeba przyznać, że nie stracił na tym za wiele.

More Than Candy to album stworzony w domowych warunkach, a jednak tylko czasami to słychać. Pomyślany z początku jako zestaw ambientowych tracków, ostatecznie stał się płytą bardziej slowcorowo-art popową i mniej eteryczną niż poprzednie. Z jednej strony nadzwyczaj ciekawe elektroniczne tła, czasem bardziej eteryczno-ambientowe, czasem delikatnie popowe. Z drugiej, tchnący akustycznym popem wokal balansujący pomiędzy dream popem a tagiem singer/songwriter (a także przypominający mi mojego ulubionego Paragraphs). Tylko że zamiast gitary akustycznej jest gitara elektryczna, a przede wszystkim gruba warstwa elektroniki. A do tego Giving Myself to the Glue to małe arcydzieło.

Endless Forms - More Than Candy (2020) EN

Endless Forms is a project led by Justin Allen who describes it as "OK dream pop". The previous album appeared on the blog back in 2017 when the project was still a trio. Now Allen on his own releases an album and it has to be said that he didn't lose much on it.

More Than Candy is an album made at home, yet it's audible only in some places. Designed at first as a collection of ambient tracks eventually developed into a more slowcore/art pop album but also less ethereal than the previous one. On one hand, extremely interesting electronic backgrounds, sometimes more airy-ambient, sometimes delicately pop-ish. On the other, the vocals sending the acoustic pop vibes balancing between dream pop and the singer/songwriter tag (and also reminding me of my favourite Paragraphs in some places). The difference being that instead of acoustic guitar we hear electronic guitar and, firstly, a deep layer of electronic sounds. Also, Giving Myself to the Glue makes a small masterpiece.

Downward - Downward (2018) PL

Debiutancki LP Amerykanów z Tulsy jest dla nich wielką sprawą, jak piszą na Bandcampie, "to początek czegoś wyjątkowego", po czym dodają, że "Downward is Heavenward (>>w dół znaczy w stronę nieba<<)". Słuchając gęstego shoegaze'u w kalifornijskim stylu, łatwo w to uwierzyć.

Jakościowo, muzyka Downward to najwyższej klasy shoegaze (w końcu kierunek patrzenia w czasie grania koncertów shoegaze'owych zawarli nawet w swojej nazwie). Zespół uchwycił w najlepszy możliwy sposób proporcje między głośnością wokalu a zagłuszających go gitar, tak że jest i głośno i eterycznie, tak jak powinno być. Zwłaszcza, że wokal sam w sobie jest nadzwyczaj senny i oniryczny.

Na płycie brakuje kawałka, o którym można by jednoznacznie powiedzieć, że jest hitem zespołu, od którego należy zacząć słuchać. VHS intryguje wyjątkową zadziornością gitar, Found a Friend to ładna ballada, ale jeśli mam wybrać najlepszy to będzie nim Bored, który wprowadza słuchacza w tę równą płytę pełną gęstego, amerykańskiego shoegaze'u.

Downward - Downward (2018) EN

The debut LP by the Americans from Tulsa is an important thing for them, as they stated on their Bandcamp: "this is the beginning of something special." after each they add "Downward is Heavenward". Listening to this California style dense shoegaze makes it easy to believe so.

Quality-wards, Downward's music makes the shoegaze of the highest class (after all the direction of gazing during shoegaze concerts is even included in their name). The band managed to catch the best possible ratio between the vocal's volume and the loudness of the guitars so it is both noisy and airy, as it's supposed to be. Especially that the vocal itself is extremely dreamy and oneiric.

On this album, there's no track that could be definitively marked as the band's hit you should start listening from. VHS intrigues with the especially raw guitars, Found a Friend makes a delicate ballad, but if I'm to choose one, it'd be Bored that introduces the listeners to this well-balanced album of dense, American shoegaze.

Endless Forms - If There Were Water (2017) EN

Endless Forms from Oklahoma is a trio that decided to give us a riddle: "what does ambient chamber rock mean?" It seems that the name of the genre they use is a mixture of ambient's dense atmosphere and quite melodic music which locate them somewhere between Piano Magic's ghost pop and Espers' ether folk.

On their Facebook account, the band describe themselves in a very picturesque way that is worth reading on your own (from Kundera to other philosophical questions). The most important thing that stands out though is the fact that Endless Forms are mostly about finding a place in this world for their unique music and for their unique selves.

On this album pop-like melodies exist only to die in the sea of noise, airy female vocal and extremely deep male one (Cigarettes After Sex anyone?) dance together, catchy tracks suddenly end and nothing is what it seems. Sometimes the band is close to post-rock ("Thrown In Waltz") or folk (the beginning of "Take Me Home") but it mostly revolves around super-atmospheric dark dream pop (nightmare pop?). And at the same time it dazzles with beauty.

Endless Forms z Oklahomy to trio, które postanowiło zadać nam zagadkę "co kryje się pod nazwą ambient chamber rock". Okazuje się, że gatunek, którym opisują swoją muzykę to połączenie dusznego, ambientowego klimatu z całkiem melodyjną muzyką, co sytuuje zespół gdzieś pomiędzy ghost popem Piano Magic a eterycznym folkiem Espers.

Zespół na swoim facebookowym koncie opisuje się w bardzo wyrafinowany sposób, który warto przeczytać sobie samemu (odwołania do Kundery, stawianie sobie filozoficznych pytań). Najważniejsze co z niego wynika to natomiast fakt, że Endless Forms chodzi przede wszystkim o odnalezienie miejsca w świecie dla swojej oryginalnej muzyki i dla oryginalnych samych siebie.

Na płycie popowe niemal melodie istnieją tylko po to by zginąć w morzu noise'u, eteryczne kobiece wokale i niezwykle głębokie męskie (Cigarettes After Sex anyone?) tańczą ze sobą, atrakcyjne kawałki nagle się urywają i nic nie jest do końca takie jak można się spodziewać. Czasem zespołowi bliżej do post-rocka ("Thrown In Waltz") czy folku ("Take Me Home"), na ogół jednak wszystko obraca się wokół super atmosferycznego dark dream popu (nightmare popu?). A jednocześnie aż razi pięknem.
