Rosjanie z HoneyHead wydali w ostatnim czasie dwa interesujące single/EP-ki, sam nie wiem czy to zapowiedź czegoś dłuższego, czy samowystarczalne albumy, w każdym razie, jest na czym ucho zawiesić. Oto A Kind of Isolation i Stranger.

Zespół udowadniał już na moim blogu, ze wie jak gra się zadziornego rocka bardzo mocno inspirowanego shoegaze'em. Przebojowe kawałki wypełniają bardzo rockowe, ale też gęste i obłapiające dźwięki gitar. Do tego dochodzi wysoki, nieco neurotyczny kobiecy wokal, co okazuje się być świetnym połączeniem. Sam duch rock-and-rolla to jednak nie wszystko, a najlepiej słychać to w głośnej i satysfakcjonującej końcówce Living in a Mess.

HoneyHead - A Kind of Isolation/Stranger (2019/2020) EN

The Russians of HoneyHead released lately two interesting singles/EPs, I'm not sure if it's an announcement of something longer or independent albums but they're definitely worth-listening-to. This is A Kind of Isolation and Stranger.

The band already proved on my blog that they now how to make heavily shoegaze-inspired cocky rock music. The catchy songs are filled with very rock-like, but also thick and sticky sounds of guitars. And there's also this high-pitched, a it neurotic female vocals which makes a great combination. But there's more than only a rock'n'roll spirit here, and it's best visible in the loud and satisfying finishing parts of Living in a Mess.

A Kind of Isolation costs 1.50 USD and Stranger costs 2 USD.

Film School - Bright to Death (2018) EN

They have already five albums long discography, they debuted almost 20 years ago, and now they release an album that proves their position within the genre's landscape - Los Angeles-based Film School sound great adding a bit of the Californian dream pop Sun to this rainy autumn.

I was on board with this release already when I heard the single "Drushin'" this summer, which has everything I expect from an airy hit: atmosphere, seducing vocal and brilliant chorus. Lead by Greg Berten band shows how it is done in California - light melodies, nostalgic lyrics and unmistakable atmosphere combining the surf-rock catchiness with shoegaze melancholy.  Apart from the single, it is clearly visible also in "Bye Bye Bird", while some tracks are dominated by dirty distorted guitar sounds in the backgrounds, as in the beautiful "Two in Sun".

What's interesting, when "Bright to Death" is half-way through, the more post-punk side of the band speaks up and in "The Celebration" breaks the melancholic mood. Another well-fitting thing would be the cover art, as if Film School's music had colour, it would be this apricot yellow of the Sun from the West Coast.

Film School - Bright to Death (2018) PL

Mają na koncie pięć płyt długogrających, debiutowali już niemal 20 lat temu, a teraz wydali album, którym potwierdzają swoją pozycję - Film School z Los Angeles znakomicie brzmią dodając trochę kalifornijskiego, dreampopowego słońca do tej słotnej jesieni.

Zgarnęli mnie na swój pokład już singlem, bo wydany latem "Crushin'" ma w sobie wszystko to, czego oczekuję od eterycznego hitu: atmosferę, uwodzicielski wokal i świetny refren. Zawiadamiany przez Grega Bertena zespół pokazuje jak to się robi w Kalifornii - lekkie melodie, nostalgiczne teksty i niepowtarzalna atmosfera, łącząca surf-rockową przebojowość i shoegaze'ową melancholię. Oprócz singla zachwycają tym również między innymi "Bye Bye Bird". Z drugiej strony są również kawałki zdominowane przez brudne przestery w tłach i tutaj znakomitym przykładem jest piękne "Two in Sun".

Co ciekawe, w połowie "Bright to Death" odzywa się bardziej post-punkowa strona zespołu i w "The Celebration" przełamuje melancholijną konwencję. Znakomicie dobrany jest też cover art, bo jeśli muzyka Film School miałaby kolor, byłby to właśnie kolor gorącego, morelowego słońca nad Zachodnim Wybrzeżem.

Reveries - Reveries (2018) EN

Reveries is a "product of wheat fields and grape vines", everybody should be able to decipher the pun from the band's website. So as you could imagine, the Washington state based artists filled their debut album with uncompromising approach to shoegaze mixed with other rock/noise guitar genres. 

"Hits My Eyes", that opens the album, makes a surprisingly massive ballad with a very noisy background and almost chanted chorus. It gets more catchy from "Existential Anxiety" where almost surf-rock composition and galloping melody meet clear guitar sounds and omnipresent noise. It is very similar with the following tracks, When Your Dreams" and "Here With You" being both perfectly engaging with their melodies nad noise. They are divided by peaceful, instrumental "Still" that makes it possible to rest from dancing  same as the album finish in the guitar droning "Passing".

"Reveries" can be yours for whatever you want to pay.

Reveries to "produkt pół pszenicy i winorośli", każdy chyba potrafi rozszyfrować ten rebus zamieszczony na koncie zespołu. Tak jak się można więc spodziewać, grupa pochodząca ze stanu Waszyngton, na swojej debiutanckiej płycie pokazuje bezkompromisowe podejście do szeroko pojętego shoegaze'u zmieszanego z rockowo-noise'owymi gatunkami.

"Hits My Eyes", które otwiera debiut, to zadziwiająca rozmachem ballada z bardzo noise'owym tłem i refrenem niemal wykrzykiwanym przez chór muzyków. Bardziej przebojowo zaczyna być od "Existential Anxiety", gdzie prawie surf-rockowa kompozycja i galopująca melodia spotykają zdecydowane, głośne gitary i wszechogarniający hałas. Podobnie jest z następnymi kawałkami idealnie wciągającymi i melodią i noise'em - "When Your Dreams" i "Here With You" z małą przerwą na odpoczynek od tańca przy "Still" i zamykającym płytę gitarowym drone'em w "Passing".

"Reveries" można mieć za ile chce się zapłacić.

Vast Asteroid - Vast Asteroid (2017) EN

Everyone knows what California is for the genre of music that collide on the orbits of shoegaze and dreampop. The new star on this constellation has just been claimed by a trio James Poulos, Mark Reback and Mimi (indeed) Star, or Vast Asteroid. Their first self-titled LP has been released just days ago but you can already tell how full of stars their spacerock is.

The album is a mixture of dense, guitar music with a very go-ahead approach to shoegaze. Although the band came from this direction, both the way they build up their tracks and the surf rock or maybe just rock way of singing give their music this top shelf catchiness. It is clearly visible in songs like  "Vivid Dream" in which the guitars are far from the gloomy power of shoegaze and the vocal from dreampop whispering.

Everything I wrote loses importance with the last track on the playlist, the 15-minutes-long "Spacegaze". As the title promises, Vast Asteroid take us to the space of guitar sounds, backgrounds and amazing subtle keys only to drown in the ocean of noise at the end.

Vast Asteroid - Vast Asteroid (2017) PL

Każdy wie czym jest Kalifornia dla rozmarzonych gatunków muzyki z przecinających się orbit shoegaze'u i dreampopu. Nową gwiazdką w tej konstelacji zostaje właśnie tercet James Poulos, Mark Reback i Mimi (nomen omen) Star czyli Vast Asteroid. Swoją pierwszą płytę długogrającą, zatytułowaną tak samo jak projekt, wydali kilka dni temu ale już można powiedzieć jak bardzo rozgwieżdżony spacerock się na niej znajduje.

Płyta to mieszanka gęstego gitarowego grania z bardzo przebojowym podejściem do shoegaze'u. Mimo że to właśnie od niego grupa wchodziła, zarówno sposób w jaki budują swoje kawałki, a także surf rockowy a może po prostu rockowy wokal dodają tej muzyce wysokiej jakości czadu. Bardzo widać to w takich kawałkach jak "Vivid Dream", gdzie gitarom daleko od ponurej mocy gitar shoegaze'owych a wokalowi od szeptów dreampopu.

Wszystko to traci jednak na aktualności w czasie ostatniego, niemal piętnastominutowego "Spacegaze". Tak jak obiecuje tytuł, Vast Asteroid zabierają nas w kosmos gitarowych dźwięków, teł i fantastycznie delikatnych klawiszy by w końcu utonąć w oceanie noise'u.

Palm Haze - Tangy Dream (2017) EN

Sound that is both heavy and smooth from Vancouver - this is Anna Wagner and Lucas Inacio or Palm Haze. They play surf rockish songs coupled with airy shoegaze and trip-hop, can't say for sure if their music is more catchy or dreamy. They released a long EP or short LP this September, the first release of the band.

What is "Tangible Dream" about? Let's ask the artists themselves: "you know that feeling when you’re outside (briefly) and it’s warm, but just warm enough. Your skin is being lightly kissed by the sun and you're almost falling asleep. You remember your past, but you're still on the present, daydreaming of a nostalgic and tangible future. Feels tangible, feels tangy, feels dreamy".

The album starts with loud and sunny dreampop that can be hummed but also may make you feel falling into this sleepy trance until some fragments bring you back to reality, as in "It Follows" the ending of which suddenly starts galloping. And later on, "Beautiful Island" is an interesting play between noisy shoegaze and trip-hop pace and the further you go in the album, the more trip-hop it gets (see: "Cloudscraper")! Intriguing, no doubt.

Palm Haze - Tangy Dream (2017) PL

Dźwięk jednocześnie ciężki i gładki z kanadyjskiego Vancouver - oto Anna Wagner i Lucas Inacio czyli Palm Haze. Grają kawałki surf rockowe sparowane z eterycznym shoegaze'em i trip-hopem, trudno samodzielnie określić, czy więcej jest w nich przebojowości czy rozmarzenia. We wrześniu wydali długą epkę albo krótki album, pierwszy w swoim dorobku.

O czym jest "Tangible Dream"? Oddajmy głos artystom: "znasz to uczucie, gdy jesteś na dworze i jest ciepło, idealnie ciepło. Twoją skórę całuje lekko słońce i znajdujesz się na skraju snu. Pamiętasz przeszłość ale wciąż jesteś w teraźniejszości i śnisz o nostalgicznej, dotykalnej przyszłości Jest materialna, jest cierpka, jest senna".

Płyta zaczyna się słonecznym i głośnym dreampopem, który nie dość, że da się zanucić to jeszcze faktycznie można przy nim odpłynąć, póki kilka fragmentów nie przywoła nas do rzeczywistości, jak "It Follows", który kończy się niespodziewanym zrywem do galopu. Tymczasem "Beautiful Islands" to ciekawa gra między hałaśliwym shoegaze'em a trip-hopowym tętnem utworu a im dalej  na płycie tym elektroniczne naleciałości są tylko wyraźniejsze (patrz: "Cloudscraper")! Intrygujące, bez dwóch zdań.
