The Last Summer for Lucy - Congratulations to the Millionth Visitor at the South Pole (2021)

This is some fine comeback here. I posted about the German band The Last Summer for Lucy three years ago when there was nothing about them across the Internet and now, when there's the second album available, there's... still no info. But it means I enjoyed Congratulations to the Millionth Visitor at the South Pole even more, thanks to the pinch of mystery around the project.

Their music evolved from what I remember and it got better quality production-wise. It's still filled with interesting concepts for instrumental music compositions and although guitars are what drives the music here, it's not always the case. The guitar soundscapes are sometimes broken with quite eclectic elements like the heavy synths and then the choir-like samples in Theme for Sale or the instrumental ambient-like fragments of We Come in Peace or delicate electronic sounds all over the place.

The album's title refers to the cold and (usually) empty landscapes of the north (and so does the opening track's one) and there's some of the heavy atmosphere of the northern desolation present here (perhaps the best one in the massive finish in Sleep If You Can), although the album is way too eclectic to stay in one place for a longer time. Good stuff.

Niemiecki projekt, o którym nie wiadomo w zasadzie nic, łącznie z tym czy jest to zespół, czy twórczość solowa. Najważniejsze jednak, że w sieci pojawił się ich (jego/jej?) debiutancki album, na którym można z przyjemnością zawiesić ucho.

Muzyka projektu to gitarowy post-rock, który jednak nie gardzi użyciem syntezatorów dodających całości kosmicznej atmosfery. Także same gitary, co warte zauważenia, bardzo łatwo przechodzą od łagodnych riffów po miażdżące dźwięki jak gdyby takie zróżnicowanie było podstawą kompozycji The Last Summer For Lucy.

W oczy rzucają się z pewnością tytuły utworów i nazwa samego zespołu. Widać, że artyści mają dużą wyobraźnie nie tylko muzyczną, bo The Last Summer For Lucy, Alexa's Suicide, czy I Sell Radium  już same opowiadają intrygujące historie, zwłaszcza, ze są one poparte dobrą muzyką, a czasem (Whistleblow) nawet bardzo udanymi fragmentami śpiewanymi.

A Germany project that nobody knows anything about, even if it is a band or a solo creation. But the most important thing is that there is now their (his? her?) new album available in the Web and it is definitely worth listening to.

The project's music is definitely guitar post-rock that is not hesitant to use synth sounds adding some space atmosphere to the whole thing. Also the guitars themselves, what is worth noticing, have no problem to go from delicate, easy-listening riffs to crushing sounds in a moment, as if this diversification was The Last Summer For Lucy's compositions cornerstone. 

What draws instantly a lot of attention is the project's name and the track titles. It's obvious that the artists have huge imagination, not only music-wise, because The Last Summer For Lucy, Alexa's Suicide, or I Sell Radium  tell intriguing stories without saying anything more, especially that they are supported with really good music. And, sometimes (Whistleblow), even with some very well-done vocalized fragments.

The Last Summer For Lucy costs whatever you want to pay.
