Jelena Ćirić, Snorri Hallgrímsson, Cécile Lacharme, Oliver Patrice Weder - Tramuntana Tapes II (2026)

The four artists started collaborating as a group in 2023 "at an old shoe factory in Mallorca". Since then, they released an album in 2025 that is now being followed up by a second release. The improvised neoclassical music they create together has the charm and the beautiful energy that inspires the audience with so much ease.

The two releases are characterized by delicate neoclassical soundscapes joined by magical vocals that only boost the soothing and slightly mysterious atmosphere. This all is a result of creating music freely, without a plan or expectations, just fueled by the energy of the group of artists being present in one place in one moment and filled with the need to create something together. Jelena Ćirić sings, Snorri Hallgrímsson and Oliver Patrice Weder play piano and Cécile Lacharme accompanies all of them on viola. I love this multi-instrumental neoclassical team joining forces like some sort of Avengers to save the souls of us, mortal music enjoyers.

Virvel - Žena sa bradom, patuljak, idiot (2019) EN

The Serbian Virvel is a band that's active already fro two decades! Not very known outside of its country just released their third album in history and Žena sa bradom, patuljak, idiot is definitely worth checking out.

The album's title, if I translate it correctly, means "bearded woman, dwarf, idiot" which fits the general description of the band saying that the artists classify themselves as emotional freaks on the Balkan music scene. Ones characterized by "an authentic sensibility which they all instinctively reached the moment they got together". In practice it means making charming indie rock enriched with some shoegaze elements.

The vibe of airiness is multiplied by the very dream pop vocals and some more ballad-like songs like Poslednij svedok. And there's the peaceful music layer that's more indie pop than shoegaze plus, what I consider an important feature, singing in their language. Serbian is definitely not commonly found on the alternative music scene.

Serbski Virvel to zespół, który istnieje już dwie dekady! Mało znany poza granicami kraju wydał właśnie swoją trzecią w historii płytę i Žena sa bradom, patuljak, idiot przyjrzeć się warto.

Tytuł albumu, jeśli dobrze tłumaczę, oznacza "baba z brodą, karzeł, idiota", co pasuje do ogólnego opisu zespołu, z którego wynika, że artyści uważają się za emocjonalnych odmieńców na bałkańskiej scenie, takich charakteryzujących się "prawdziwą wrażliwością, którą wszyscy nabyli w momencie, w którym się spotkali". W praktyce oznacza to granie uroczego indie rocka wzbogaconego shoegaze'owymi elementami.

Wrażenie eteryczności potęguje bardzo dreampopowy wokal i kilka bardziej balladowych kawałków jak Poslednij svedok. Do tego dochodzi spokojna warstwa muzyczna bardziej indiepopowa niż shoegaze'owa i, co dla mnie akurat bardzo ważne i bardzo pociągające - śpiewanie w niecodziennym języku. Serbskiego nie spotyka się na alternatywnej scenie tak często.
