aMute - Days of Light & Let Go (2023)

aMute is a music project with a long history. Now Jérôme Deuson's solo project, it used to involve more people and debuted almost 20 years ago. Now, Deauson released the 8th album under this moniker and Days of Light & Let Go and it's as strange and moody as its cover art.

It's very difficult to label this music. It's safe to say that from the look of the cover art, you'd expect some kind of metal music, but it couldn't be further from truth. The compositions here are not loud, they are more into creating a particular kind of atmosphere, but you couldn't say they are slow or dragging. They are made of more or less subtle electronica with a great deal of organ-sounding keys (so great in Complaints & Thoughts). But most of the time here we spend with the darker kind of ambient music with or without vocals. There's a lot going on here genre-wise but everything is filtered with the same unnerving but interesting, horror-like but self-reflecting lenses and I appreciate it a lot. 

And once again, because I love it so much, the cover art is what draws attention to the album with the photography taken by a talented visual artist with a really cool name: Mothmeister.

Nicole Dollanganger - Married in Mount Airy (2023)

I love what Nicole Bell does as Nicole Dollanganger. The Canadian artist for over a decade combines the violence- and love-centred poetry with ambient pop and this is a fantastic, although surprising at first, combination that works so well also on her seventh album to date, Married in Mount Airy.

Bell's child-like voice (and the overall image as well) heavily contrasts with the adult, often unsettling themes of what she sings about and this is something that makes the spine thrill when listening to her albums. Especially that, very much in the way country and folk music does it, the lyrics tell full-grown stories with many details that help the audience to find themselves within Bell's poetry. Amazing story-telling immersion capabilities. The minimalist music accompanying her vocals is equally disturbing: when the instruments sound like not exactly on tune, the whole message sounds distorted as well. But I especially like it when the vocals are complimented by the organ-like synth sounds, adding to how touching they are.

It's worth adding that the music on the album could also safely be described as dream pop, although the dreaminess here can be disputed, it's more nightmarish if anything. Still, the oneiric attributes are very much tangible and make the immersion even more complete. I feel like it's at its top in Nymphs Finding the Head of Orpheus, making it automatically my favourite track here.

Päfgens - Der Regen (2022)

Jana Kočišová and Filip Drábek, two modern nomads, come from Slovakia, they created their band in Warszawa, Poland and currently make their music in Berlin, Germany. Just like the artists, their music is also travelling, "moving from shoegazy and dreamy naive folk into loops and oscilative drones". The latter is reached on Der Regen.

Their new album "comes from nowhere, takes you to a place for a moment and leaves as suddenly as it came. Subtle, yet very strong." The subtlety is the keyword here: the music is based on acoustic sounds that get looped and changed all over so they create tiny mazes of mesmerizing sound. And those mazes lead us through tiny worlds filled with field recordings that make them alive. The strength of the duo lies in their ability to create soundscapes that generate so much atmosphere, one that may be lighter or darker, but they can also create some really unnerving pieces too, with the album's last, slowly building up Nylon that ends the whole album with gloomy sounds of bells.

Itai the Maid - Obdormiscere (2021)

What Itai the Maid, an artist from Moscow, makes, is definitely lo-fi and DIY-like but also very, very clever and charming. Her album Obdormiscere shows that you don't have to have the best quality of sound to create something great.

The album's title translates from Latin to "falling asleep" and also the title track's lyrics, in Russian this time, treat about the same thing. No wonder the whole thing has clear dream pop vibes: dispersed vocals, backing vocals, music haze in the backgrounds. However, there's quite a lot going on besides, making this music much more complex. More or less subtle electronic sounds add to the music's feeling of modernness, the Russian language sounds both mysterious and, at least to my Polish ears, familiar (and also t.A.T.u.-gone-dreamy-like), the omnipresent gothic, dark atmosphere makes it quite eery. And it's also pretty melodic so, as I said, a lot is going on on this album, including chip-tune-like dance madness in Insanire.

In general, the release is all about being gloomy but catchy, Gothic but fun and lo-fi but very much engaging.

Servo - Alien (2020) PL

Oczywiście Fuzz Club to label z taką renomą, że niemal w ciemno można zakładać, że jeśli zdecydują się oni na wydanie jakiegoś projektu, projekt ten zasługuje na wyższą uwagę. I nie inaczej jest z francuskim zespołem Servo i ich płytą Alien. 

Zespół łączy post-punkowe, a nawet darkwave'owo-gotyckie, coś jak post-radziecka zimna fala, wokale z bogatymi aranżacjami o psychodelicznych gitarowych tłach, w których dzieje się na ogół bardzo dużo. To wszystko powoduje wrażenie przestrzenności ich muzyki, tak że zdaje się wypełniać całe dźwiękowe spektrum. Tak jak ma to miejsce w Soon, gdzie mroczne wokale spotykają falsety, a całość podana jest w nadzwyczaj eterycznym sosie chociaż w końcu również przyspiesza w stronę psychodelicznego rocka. Pełna werwy jest też II, kompozycja napędzana szybkim gitarowym backgroundem i zmianami tempa.

W końcu następuje też finał w rozkręcającym się jak lawina Room 3, który kończy się, gdy wydaje się, że może ciągnąć się w hipnotyzująca nieskończoność. Ale jeśli to nie jest nieprzewidywalna psychodelia to nie wiem co nią jest.

Servo - Alien (2020) EN

Of course, Fuzz Club is a kind of a serious label that when they decide to release some project's album, the project is automatically worth checking out. The French band Servo and their album called Alien are no exception here.

The band mixes post-punk, or even dark wave/gothic (something like the post-USSR coldwave) vocals with rich compositions with psychedelic, guitar backgrounds where a lot of stuff happens. This makes the music sound extremely spacious so it does feel like filling the whole sound spectre. Just like in Soon in which the dark vocals meet falsettos and the whole thing is served in an exceptionally airy way, although eventually also speeds up towards psychedelic rock. Another zestful song is II, a composition fueled by the fast guitar backgrounds and shifts of pace.

Finally there's also the album's finish in the avalanche-like Room 3 which ends when it seems that it could last forever. But if this is not an incalculable psychedelia then I don't know what is.

Hilary Woods - Birthmarks (2020) PL

Wydaje mi się, że ekstremalnie mroczny dream pop czerpiący z folku i wszelkiej maści noise'u, powiedzmy Chelsea-Wolfe-izm ma się ostatnio wyjątkowo dobrze. Dopiero co pisałem o Mirny Mine, a tu zachwycił mnie nowy album Hilary Woods Birthmarks.

Irlandka łączy właśnie wspomniane gatunki tworząc przebogaty i przemroczny tribalowy koktajl. Jak przebogate i szerokie horyzonty artystyczne ma piosenkarka niech świadczy lista inspiracji, w której wymienia przeróżne pozycje od fotografii kolodionowej przez wilki po filmy Chrisa Markera. Płyta, która powstała, gdy Woods była w zaawansowanej ciąży (na pewno inspiracja dla tytuły), zachwyca muzycznymi tłami z eterycznymi chórami, subtelną neoklasyką jak i wdzierającym się w umysł noise'em.

Im dalej w płytę tym mroczniej i niesamowiciej się robi. Tak jak w zdominowanym przez niepokojący, czający się gdzieś na granicy słyszalności noise i cały dark-tribal-ambientowy vibe Mud and Stones. Zwłaszcza użycie żywych instrumentów, które często tę atmosferę generują zasługuje na najwyższy szacunek, posłuchajcie na przykład początku The Mouth i spróbujcie nie poczuć ciarek na plecach.

Hilary Woods - Birthmarks (2020) EN

It seems to me that the extremely dark dream pop drawing from folka and noise of all kinds, let's call it Chelsea-Wolfe-ism, recently is really powerful. I've just mentioned Mirny Mine and now I'm simply amazed by the new album from Hilary Woods Birthmarks.

The Irish artist combines the aforementioned genres creating a super-rich and super-dark tribal cocktail. The richness and breadth of her horizons are well seen in the list of inspirations she accounts for that ranges from wet plate photography and wolves up to Chris Marker's movies. The album that was made when the artist was pregnant (definitely an inspiration for the title), impresses with the musical backgrounds of airy backing vocals, subtle neoclassicism and mind-invading noise.

The further into the album the darker and more eerie it gets. Like in Mud and Stones, dominated by the unnerving, creeping somewhere and barely audible noise and its whole dark tribal-folk-ambient vibe. Especially the use of the live instruments that often generate this atmosphere is something that should be respected, just listen to the first part of The Mouth and try not to feel thrills crawling up your spine.

Mirny Mine - Live at Visby Cathedral (2020 EN

I'm not that much into live music albums (mostly because of the sound quality tbh) and so there has never been any on my blog/ But it's different with those gothic-sensitive artists having gig in churches. It's different with those who are compared to Anna von Hausswolff. It's different with Mirny Mine who released recently an album Live at Visby Cathedral.

Indeed, a cathedral-based concert (not to mention the accompaniment by the Visby choir) fits this kind of music best. Mirny Mine, or in real life Anna Sundström, just like her more famous compatriot, makes an inspired gothic and dark pop, a real "cinematic journey into the darker parts of dream pop". Everything here is very dark, soaking with Scandinavian aesthetics, the artist's vocals sometimes sound like unnerving whispers (so beautiful in Wolf), sometimes it's spoken word, sometimes very on-point and majestic.

On the musical layer, it's dominated by monumental drums sounding like timpani that strike the stable, never hurrying pace. To top that, there are also guitars, occasionally more wheezing than not But everything is slightly different in the album's finish in Dream, tribal, mesmerizing and speedy ethereal dance.

Mirny Mine - Live at Visby Cathedral (2020 PL

Niezbyt lubię płyty z zapisem koncertów live (ze względu na jakość dźwięku, co tu kryć) i nigdy dotąd żadna nie pojawiła się na tym blogu. Jednak inaczej jest z tak gotycko-wrażliwymi artystami robiącymi koncerty w kościołach. Inaczej jest z artystami, którzy sami porównują się do Anny von Hausswolff. A więc i z Mirny Mine, która wydała niedawno album Live at Visby Cathedral.

Właśnie koncert w katedrze, w dodatku w towarzystwie chóru z Visby najlepiej pasuje do takiej muzyki. Mirny Mine, a właściwie Anna Sundström, podobnie jak swoja bardziej znana koleżanka ze Szwecji, tworzy natchniony, gotycki i mroczny pop, prawdziwą "kinematograficzną podróż w mroczniejsze regiony dream popu". Wszystko jest tutaj bardzo mroczne, przesiąknięte skandynawską estetyką, wokal artystki czasem brzmi jak niepokojący szept (piękny w Wolf), czasem melorecytujący, czasem dobitnie i majestatycznie.

Na płaszczyźnie muzycznej dominują monumentalne uderzenia perkusji brzmiące bardziej jak kotły wybijające stabilne, niespieszne tempo. Poza tym mamy gitary okazjonalnie bardziej rzężące. Wszystko jest trochę inne w zamykającym album Dream, tribalowym, wciągajacym i szybkim eterycznym tańcu..

The Hills Mover - Before the Wind (2020) EN

Grégoire Fray is mostly known as the vocalist and energetic leader of the post-rocking THOT. Meanwhile his solo works constitute something entirely different: industrial/gothic singer-songwriter who when going to have a tour around Europe brings with himself only a hoodie and a guitar. Before he went for the next one, he released an EP called Before the Wind.

Four tracks well reflect the spirit of his music - moody vocals, sometimes deep, sometimes high-pitched, pulsating industrial backgrounds and tons of atmosphere. It comes partly from his music, partly from the overall image Fray creates around himself. It can't be underappreciate how melodic his songs are - the pulsating The March of the Seeds, very catchy Silver Sleep with its mighty but also tamed basses in the backgrounds or finally the very dark Before the Wind.

The musician has just started the already mentioned tour in which he'll visit countries from Belgium through Poland up to Petersburg in Russia.

Grégoire Fray najbardziej znany jest jako wokalista i energetyczny lider post-rockującego THOT. Tymczasem jego solowa twórczość to zupełnie inna bajka: industrialno-gotycki singer-songwriter, który w trasę po Europie bierze tylko bluzę z kapturem i gitarę. Przed kolejną wydał EP-kę zatytułowaną Before the Wind.

Cztery kawałki dobrze oddają ducha jego muzyki - nastrojowy wokal, raz głęboki, raz wysoki, pulsujące, nieco industrialne podkłady, a do tego mnóstwo klimatu. Po części wynika on z muzyki, po części z ogólnego wrażenia roztaczanego przez Fraja. Nie można nie docenić również tego jak melodyjne są jego kawałki - pulsujący The March of the Seeds, wpadający w ucho Silver Sleep z jego potężnym, ale okiełznanym basem w tłach czy bardzo mroczny tytułowy Before the Wind.

Muzyk rusza właśnie w nadmienioną wcześniej trasę po Europie Środkowej i Wschodniej. Z koncertami we Wrocławiu, Krakowie, Warszawie i Białymstoku.

Meczup - Songs of the Others (2019) EN

Theremin is a music instrument developed by Leo Termen, the function of which is based on field disturbances of human body. Another name for the instrument is etherophone and this alone makes me love it unconditionally. If there's someone who doesn't know the horror-filled sound of theremin, they can catch up thanks to this extremely original album by the Turkish duo Meczup.

On daily basis, the band play electronic music contaminated with some Middle East folk influences, but here, they employed the theremin itself. Together with gothic-flavoured keys, they play, as the title suggests, the songs of others. The others are not chosen by coincidence, this bunch consists of legendary composers including Tschaikovky, Shubert, Mozart and much more. This combination of classical music and theremin that is mostly connected with horror b-class movies makes an extraordinary impression. Especially that the whole album is dominated by this atmosphere that reminds me of some weirdly gothic projects such as The Black Heart Procession. Great idea and phenomenal execution.

Theremin to instrument muzyczny skonstruowany przez Lwa Termena, którego działanie polega na zakłócaniu pola przez obecność ciała ludzkiego. Inna jego nazwa to eterofon, za co ma moje dozgonne propsy. Jeśli ktoś nie zna pełnego grozy brzmienia thereminu, ma szansę nadrobić to dzięki niezwykle oryginalnej płycie tureckiego duetu Meczup.

Zespół grający na co dzień zarażoną bliskowschodnim folkiem elektronikę, tutaj postawił właśnie na brzmienie thereminu. Wraz z gotycko brzmiącymi klawiszami wygrywają oni tytułowe piosenki innych, a są to nieprzypadkowi inni - wśród interpretacji Turków mamy więc i Czajkowskiego i Szuberta i Mozarta i wielu innych. To połączenie klasyki z kojarzącym się głównie z podrzędnymi horrorami thereminem robi niezwykłe wrażenie. Zwłaszcza, że nad całością dominuje klimat kojarzący się z twórczością takich gotyckich dziwolągów jak The Black Heart Procession. Znakomity pomysł i fenomenalne wykonanie.

Thanatoloop & Vlimmer - Vlimmer & Thanatoloop (2017) PL

Vlimmer, nasz dobry muzyczny znajomy zza zachodniej granicy wdał się własnie w kolejną po duecie z The Oceaneer fascynującą kolaborację. Tym razem jego partnerem został chilijski producent Michel Leroy Valdés znany jako Thanatoloop, który swoją mroczną muzykę tworzy już od ponad dwudziestu lat.

Płyta powstała więc na dwóch kontynentach, prawdopodobnie w wirtualnej przestrzeni pomiędzy Chile a Niemcami, a mimo to brzmi jakby była od początku do końca zagrana w jakiejś z dawna opuszczonej gotyckiej katedrze wśród całkowitych ciemności. Mroczne wokale na przemian niemieckie i hiszpańskie powolne tempo oraz elektronika, której zdecydowanie bliżej do cmentarza niż tanecznego parkietu tworzą ten wyjątkowy klimat.

Thanatoloop & Vlimmer - Vlimmer & Thanatoloop (2017) EN

Vlimmer, our good musical friend from Germany, has just gotten involved into another fantastic collaboration. After cooperation with The Oceaneer, he became the partner of the Chilean producer Michel Leroy Valdés known as Thanatoloop, who makes his music already for over 20 years.

So the album was created on two different continents, probably in the virtual space between Germany and Chile, but still it sounds as if from the beginning to the end was all played in a long time abandoned gothic cathedral in complete darkness. Gloomy vocals in both German and Spanish, slow pace and the electronic music that is definitely closer to a cemetery than to a dance floor are the factors creating this unique atmosphere.

Anna von Hausswolff - The Miraculous (2015) EN

The compass with a violin key needle says: "north". This week Sweden. Rich not only with pagan black metal and blonde pop stars, trust me. To break the ice (accordingly to the geographical location) - Anna von Hausswolff and her band. A unique character of the Swedish music scene, just like Karin Dreijer,  erratic like Antony Hegarty, aerial like Kate Bush. A gothic songwriter who performs in churches and sings about love with the devil. The gothic part of her is perfectly audible everywhere in her works. Worrisome pop, dreadful folk, rock&roll played on church organs - that's what she sounds like.

"The Miraculous" shows a questionable miraculousness. It's as miraculous as a possessed girl who walks the walls, as a stone angel opening his eyes, as Madonna's bloody tears. Miracles, no doubt, but are they miraculous? I don't know. The album is epic where it should be, funeral-like and claustrophobic in other places. And above the sounds of the Addams Family orchestra planes von Hausswolff's both strong and airy vocal.

House wolf? Actually yes - a beautiful and domesticated black mass.

Kompas z kluczem wiolinowym zamiast igły wskazuje północ. W tym tygodniu Szwecja. Bogata nie tylko w pogański metal i blond gwiazdki pop, zaufajcie mi. Na pierwszy ogień (prawdopodobnie lepszym określeniem byłby "pierwszy lód") Anna von Hausswolff z zespołem. Szwedzka osobowość na scenie muzycznej, jak Karin Dreijer, nieobliczalna jak Antony Hegarty, eteryczna jak Kate Bush. Gotycka songwriterka koncertująca w kościołach i śpiewająca o miłości z diabłem. Gotyckość słychać wyraźnie na każdym kroku, niepokojący pop, straszliwy folk, rock&roll na kościelnych organach - tak brzmi Götebożanka.

"The Miraculous" cudowność ma zastanawiającą. Jest tak cudowny jak opętana dziewczyna chodząca po ścianach, jak kamienny anioł otwierający naraz oczy, jak krwawe łzy Madonny. Cuda niewątpliwie, czy cudowne, nie wiem. Na płycie jest epicko, gdy trzeba, gdy trzeba to pogrzebowo lub klaustrofobicznie. A nad tymi wszystkimi dźwiękami orkiestry rodziny Addamsów prześlizguje się jednocześnie mocny i eteryczny wokal von Hausswolff.

Domowy wilk? W zasadzie to czemu nie - piękna i udomowiona czarna msza.
