adele dazeem - Metanoia (2025)

They are named after actress and singer Idina Menzel (whose first name was famously mispronounced by John Travolta, resulting in her using "Adele" in multiple occasions afterwards), they come from London and they released their first EP last autumn. This blend of shoegazey atmosphere and post-punk vibes caught my attention immediately.

The EP is short, but still it's clearly well done: there are parts that are noisy, there are parts filled with darker, coldwave approach to music, there are some curious instrumental parts too. Their compositions are designed to go on and on, mesmerizing the audience with the harsh trance-inducing passages and overwhelming with noisy guitars. I'm very happy that the musicians don't consider the end of lyrics as the end of their songs: I'd say that in this case, the songs really start after the post-punk vocals disappear. But it's only my instrumental-noise bias probably.

Monochromatic Visions - REFORM (2022)

Five years ago, the London-based Monochromatic Visions released their self-titled debut EP and thus debuted also on my blog. Now, one album and five years later, it's time for their second long play called REFORM.

Unlike the title of the album suggests, there's not much reformation in the duo's music: it's still all about the post-punk's legacy filtered by a healthy dose of psychedelic noise. It feels cold with very audible bass lines encapsulated by very noisy guitars. On top of that, the vocals are situated and those are so very much in the line of post-punk genre. Also, the compositions are usually quite short, another inspiration from the punk's subgenres. Recorded during the pandemics, the release's "themes explore the process of untethering from the past to evolve and reform into a better version of one’s self", so well noticeable in Lost: "lost inside/ found outside/ past accept/ craft your time". And it does sound super optimistic for the coldwave music but I guess even post-punkers want to feel loved.

Ghost Patterns - Infinite (2021)

A year ago the London-based band debuted with a very short EP called Oracle (or maybe it was a single as the songs are now used again). Now they finally show their first ever LP Infinite and as they have it in their modus operandi, they filled it with a blend of ethereal noise and post-punk coldness. 

We are led to this black and white madness by a very post-rock-like instrumental intro but it is joined by vocals soon enough. These are so characteristic for the project: they are perfectly balanced as far as the distanced post-punk and distorted shoegaze characteristics are concerned. And in fact, this withdrawn, hidden in the backgrounds but also well audible style of singing makes the band's music extremely curious. In songs like Oracle or House of Lies, they sound also very, very catchy like it is the case in the best post-punk releases. Another thing is the music around the vocals. There's a clear bass line, but unlike in "real" coldwave, there's so much more going around it. The guitars create some pleasant noise that can lead to considerably loud finishes (again, in Oracle).

One other aspect here is important: the band's ease at creating mesmerizing passages that swallow the audience whole. There are fragments of the albums that were meant to be less catchy and more psychedelically engaging, sometimes in the style of 10 000 Russos' pure psychedelia, sometimes more like the KVB's dreamy noise rock - but always hypnotizing and making the time less important for the listener.

Zetra - The Wanderer (2020)

Zatra is a post-punk/gazy duo from London who lately released some intriguing stuff. I liked their EP from 2020 but what really caught my attention was... an EP from 2020. Towards the end of the year, they released a themed EP called The Wanderer.

This album was, naturally, written in isolation during the lockdowns, however, its focus is not on this experience but on something quite different: the nature of Christian holidays and their beginnings "when native European gods and traditions were assimilated and appropriated into a festival now celebrated across the world". So we have something about Odin, something about Sol Invictus here and all this sort of jazz. Quite special for this kind of music (sounds like a metal theme to me) - a blend of delicate, pop-like melodic and dreamy at the same time vocals with shoegazy coldwave and noise rock in the backgrounds.

In Hanged God, we can hear fitting long and desolated passages of guitar sounds as well as wavy electronic devices and it's blends into the cold noise rock of the rest of the album. The balance in the form of the angelic vocals (especially in the ballad-like Before I Dissolve) is like light to the music's shadow and fits perfectly the visual side of the project.

Seasurfer - Zombies (2020)

Seasurfer are a German duo made of Dirk Knight responsible for the music and Apolonia, the lyricist and vocalist. Together they create their own take at the ethereal and synthy dream pop music that makes the filling of their new album Zombies.

As the project's name suggests, their music is very wavy. The coldwave and post-punk influences here cannot be denied with the dreamy and the cold cooperating (or fighting each other) in every second of the release. No wonder they call it "dream punk". Actually, the dreaminess of their sound is solely the result of the extremely dispersed and very densely projected vocals that create a real sea of ethereality. And even in faster songs, as in Tears & Happiness, there's no doubt it's still dream-oriented. Even in the very much darkwave compositions like Drifting.

If for someone it's not enough of the band's music, the album actually contains a bonus EP or an appendix if you will, a mini album called The Dreampop Days with songs created in cooperation with Elena Alice Fossi, an Italian vocalist. Together, Zombies stands for almost 2 hours of cold and dreamy feast.

Magic Wands - Illuminate (2020)

The Californian Magic Wands released their debut album almost a decade ago, now it's time for a new release with Illuminate's catchy, dreamy and somewhat cold tunes showed to the world at the end of the last year.

Their blend of the indie pop's liveliness, the post-punk's vibes in the backgrounds and the dreampopish atmosphere appeared already on my blog three years ago with their third album Abrakadabra. With the new album, the artists keep digging into the very catchy and ethereal way of creating music, basing them on synth-minimal and coldwave-like flat backgrounds. It makes it sooo easy to be attracted towards this atmosphere of the futuristically magical dance trances from the 80's (hey, no wonder they wear those space-like glasses). 

Some of the songs here stay with the listener longer, I'm mostly thinking about Honeymoon and my favourite Queen of the Gypsies with its heavy ethereal mood combined with the magical, or perhaps even mythological, theme of the Roma people. Illuminate makes a light and catchy work for sad people who want to dance.

Tender Tones - Youth Retirement Club (2020) EN

Manon Deruytere and Maxime Pargaud make up the Tender Tones duo. The Paris-based artists, a new item in Shore Dive Records' portfolio, are into exceptionally atmospheric combination of dream pop and a lot of synth sounds. How good it turned out to be can be checked on their new EP called Youth Retirement Club.

The Frenchmen's band doesn't sound like energetic synthpop, quite the contrary, talking about synths and flat, synthetic beats it's closer to minimalist vibes of coldwave. Then there are also some mysterious, darkwavish whispers in Red Lovers. On the other hand, both the engaging melodies and distorted, airy vocals are surely something that came from dream pop. This cold etheric atmosphere sounds great, especially when the two opposites - the darkness of wave and the dreaminess of dream pop closely work together as it is in the great Still White Noise. 

No wonder then that the album is co-released by the shoegazey Shore Dive Records and wave Somewherecold. An ideal marriage..

Tender Tones - Youth Retirement Club (2020) PL

Manon Deruytere i Maxime Pargaud tworzą Tender Tones. Duet z Paryża, nowa pozycja w portfolio Shore Dive Records, specjalizuje się w niezwykle atmosferycznym połączeniu dream popu i dużej ilości syntezatorowych dźwięków. Jak dobrze to połączenie wypada przekonać można się na nowej EP-ce artystów zatytułowanej Youth Retirement Club.

Muzyka Francuzów nie brzmi jak energiczny synthpop, a w sferze syntezatorów i płaskich, syntetycznych bitów bardziej przypomina minimalistyczne klimaty coldwave'u. Do tego dochodzą też tajemnicze szepty w Red Lovers. Z drugiej strony zarówno wciągające melodie i rozproszone, eteryczne wokale to już zdecydowanie zasługa dream popu. Taka zimna eteryka robi bardzo dobre wrażenie, najfajniej, gdy obie skrajności - mrok wave'u i rozmarzenie dream popu ze sobą ściśle współgrają, a tak jest w świetnym Still White Noise. 

Nic dziwnego zresztą, że krążek wydawany jest przez shoegaze'owe Shore Dive Records ale też wave'owe Somewherecold. Mariaż niemal idealny.

Vysoké Čelo - Űrkutatás (2020) EN

For anyone who follows what the Opus Elefantum label does, Vysoké Čelo is nothing new. The artists, among whom there is also Janusz Jurga who appears on the blog from time to time, released already four albums and the fifth one joined in June. So let's listen to Űrkutatás.

The band's music makes a super rich mix. They draw something from ambient, something from folk, something from psychedelia, something from traditional rock (hey, II makes a really good song with the South States vibes), something from coldwave (hey, the second part of II makes a good song with wave vibes). And it's possible to go on listing those influences for a while, it's very difficult to close the band within any possible genre. And then, there's also a ton of different vocals, various moods - only in IV it ranges from sparky keys/glockenspiel and unnerving new age up to an airy finish.

Yeah, you can't get bored with the Poles.

Vysoké Čelo - Űrkutatás (2020) PL

Vysoké Čelo dla każdego, kto śledzi poczynania labelu Opus Elefantum, nie jest zespołem nowym. Artyści, wśród których jest też pojawiający się na moim blogu Janusz Jurga, mają na koncie już cztery albumy, a piąty dołączył do nich w czerwcu. Posłuchajmy więc Űrkutatás.

Muzyka zespołu to bardzo bogata mieszanka. Czerpią trochę z ambientu, trochę z folku, trochę z psychodelii, trochę z bardziej tradycyjnego rocka (ej, II to całkiem dobra kompozycja w stylu Południowych Stanów), trochę z zimnej fali (ej, druga część II to całkiem dobra kompozycja w wave'owym stylu). Na pewno można by tak wymieniać jeszcze długo, bardzo ciężko zamknąć styl zespołu w jakichkolwiek ramach. Do tego dochodzi tona różnych wokali, różnych nastrojów - w samym tylko IV od roziskrzonych klawiszy/dzwonków przez niepokojący new age po wręcz eteryczny finał. 

No, nie sposób się z Polakami nudzić.

Talk to Her - Love Will Come Again (2020) EN

Post-punk in various forms is not an often situation on this blog. So it's even better that it changes now because of the band that is only now debuting as Love Will Come Again makes the first LP by the Italian band Talk to Her.

This album talks "about love as an overwhelming power, a mystical experience of life that might be even the hardest". It's a guide through the process of falling in love, from the innocence to love confessions. No wonder that for a coldwave post-punk, in Talk to Her's music there's a ot of emotions. First of all conveyed by the extraordinary vocals. Also, each of the songs makes a cold banger, almost all of the melodies make you intuitively hum along and it's just another meta-commentary to falling in love.

The tracks that automatically get inside you are Truth, Hollow or the album's closure in the droning Confessions. But the most important thing is how good the album looks as a whole. And remember, it's just the debut.

Talk to Her - Love Will Come Again (2020) PL

Post-punk w różnych odsłonach nie pojawia się na tym blogu tak często, tym lepiej więc, że zmiany tego stan rzeczy zmusiła mnie kapela debiutująca dopiero, bo Love Will Come Again to pierwszy długogrający krążek w dorobku włoskiego Talk to Her.

Płyta traktuje "o miłości jako obezwładniającej sile, mistycznym doświadczeniem życia, które może nawet być najtrudniejszym". Jest wręcz podróżą przez proces zakochiwania się, od bycia niewinnym po miłosne wyznania. Nic dziwnego, że jak na zimnofalowy post-punk, w muzyce Talk to Her dużo jest emocji. Przede wszystkim słychać to w niesamowitym wokalu. Przy okazji każdy utwór to zimny banger, w zasadzie każdą melodię od razu się podśpiewuje, a to tylko dodatkowy metakomentarz do stanu zakochania.

Takie kawałki, które od razu zapadają w pamięć to Truth, Hollow czy zamykający całość, dronujący Confessions. Najważniejsze jednak jak dobrze pyta prezentuje się jako całość. A to, przypominam, dopiero debiut.

Больше Леса - пространство между нами (2019) EN

A wide range of inspirations (from The Doors and Slowdive up to nadja) in case of the Ukrainians of Больше Леса ("more forests", such an important message these days) resulted in an extremely solid psychedelia. You can taste it on the last year's Christmas Eve's album called пространство между нами ("the space between us").

As the title suggest, the album is "about the period of fluctuations, about the spaces between us." This coldness is reflected in the post-punk vocals and compositions of songs such as чтобы понять, что я сплю that are based pn the line of bass and appearing here and there guitars. On the other hand, there's always some guitar-rich psychedelia in the surprisingly melodic and catchy секрет. 

PS. The logo's tree hides the band's name written in the Cyrillic alphabet, how cool is that?

Больше Леса - пространство между нами (2019) PL

Szerokie spektrum inspiracji (od The Doors przez Slowdive po nadję) w przypadku Ukraińców z Больше Леса ("więcej lasów", bardzo odpowiednie wezwanie na dzisiejsze czasy swoją drogą) zaowocowało bardzo solidną psychodelią. Można jej spróbować na wydanym w wigilię krążku пространство между нами ("przestrzeń między nami").

Płyta, tak jak sugeruje tytuł,  mówi "o okresie zmian, o przestrzeniach między nami." Ten chłód oddany jest w post-punkowym wokalu i kompozycjach takich jak чтобы понять, что я сплю, opartych na basie i przewijających się tu i ówdzie gitarach. Z drugiej strony mamy bogatą w gitary i atmosferę psychodelię, tak jak w zaskakująco przebojowym секрет. 

PS. W drzewie z logo zespołu można odnaleźć zakamuflowaną nazwę zespołu (pisaną cyrylicą), czy to nie cool?

Killed to Death - Wszystko minęło (2019) EN

Killed to Death is a solo moniker of Michał Lasota, Poznań-based artist. Released by Trzy Szóstki Wszystko minęło ("Everything's Gone") is not his first album but it made me intrigued and good thing it did as there's nothing quite like synthpop Nagrobki.

Just like his colleagues from Tri-city, Lasota's works oscillate around the topic of death and various fears, but perhaps it's not as monothematic. The album is supposed to be "a neurotic and torn apart collection made as a tool to deal with, explain and come to terms with reality". But instead of punk vibes, it is a non-obvious and unpretentious synthpop with ridiculously melodic compositions.

In this aspect the best tracks are Teraz jest potworów czas ("Now's the Time of Monsters") with seemingly silly chorus, charmingly dirty with electronic effects Korytnica or Po złej stronie słońca ("At the Wrong Side of the Sun") in which the artist for the first time in the history of Polish music managed to use the "słońce-gorące" ("sun-hot") rhyme in a non-kitschy way. But to be honest, every track has something intriguing and engaging inside.

Wszystko minęło costs whatever you want to pay.

Killed to Death - Wszystko minęło (2019) PL

Killed to Death to solowy projekt Michała Lasoty, artysty z Poznania. Wszystko minęło to nie jest jego pierwszy album, ale wydany przez Trzy szóstki album zwrócił na niego moją uwagę i znakomicie się stało bo nie ma to jak synthpopowe Nagrobki.

Tak jak u bardziej znanych kolegów z Trójmiasta, twórczość Lasoty oscyluje wokół tematu śmierci i różnych lęków, chociaż być może jest mniej monotematyczna. Album to w założeniu "kolekcja neurotyczna i rozdarta, służąca jednocześnie jako narzędzie do ułożenia, wytłumaczenia sobie i pogodzenia się z rzeczywistością". Tylko zamiast punkowych vibe'ów jest nieszablonowy i bezpretensjonalny synthpop oraz absurdalnie wpadające w ucho kompozycje.

Przodują w tym takie kawałki jak Teraz jest potworów czas z pozornie śmiesznawym refrenem, urokliwie zabrudzona elektronicznie Korytnica czy Po złej stronie słońca, w którym artyście udało się po raz pierwszy w historii polskiej muzyki użyć w niekiczowaty sposób rymu słońce-gorące. Ale tak naprawdę w każdym kawałku jest coś intrygującego i zajmującego.

Wszystko minęło kosztuje tyle, ile chcesz zapłacić.

Sólveig Matthildur - Constantly in Love (2019) EN

Mysterious in the picture and nice and lovely in person, the Icelandic artist is a member of the brilliant Kaelan Mikla whose last band is the coldwave of the highest quality and whose concerts are to be remembered for a long time (as it was with the one in Kraków this spring). Meanwhile Solveig released a solo album and it must be said that Constantly in Love is quite different in atmosphere from the band's works.

The album should be put on to admire its poetic side amongst others. The whole thing is a camo-ed poem with its own beginning and finish and while it is about love, something that may sometimes be trivial, it does so in such an intriguing, challenging and well thought-through way that it hardly can not be appreciated. Not to mention the smart usage of the titles, finger-licking good.

And it's played as a combination of songwriting pop with gothic new wave. On one hand, Solveig, her vocals and lyrics are always in the focus, which can't be a surprise, on the other, the Icelander's intriguing voice and synth melodies with shallow basses are certainly the influences from her musical background. Also, the album includes a remix version of Your Desperation by the coldwave project Hante who loves collaborating with Kaelan Mikla.

Constantly in Love costs 10 USD.

Sólveig Matthildur - Constantly in Love (2019) PL

Tajemnicza na zdjęciu i urocza prywatnie Islandka to członkini fantastycznego Kaelan Mikla, którego ostatnia płyta to zimna fala z niezwykle wysokiej półki, a koncerty wspomina się bardzo długo (tak jak ten w Krakowie tej wiosny). Tymczasem Solveig wydała do tego album solowy i trzeba przyznać, że Constantly in Love odbiega klimatem od dokonań zespołowych.

Płytę należy odpalić choćby ze względu na jej poetycki charakter. Całość to jeden zakamuflowany poemat ze swoim początkiem i końcem i chociaż mówi o miłości, co wydawać się może banalne, robi to w tak intrygujący, wymagający i przemyślany sposób, że nie można tego nie docenić. Nie mówiąc już o przebiegłych tytułach poszczególnych kawałków, no palce lizać.

A zagrane jest to jak połączenie songwriterskiego popu z gotycką nową falą. Z jednej strony to Solveig, jej wokal i jej teksty są zawsze na pierwszym planie, co oczywiście nie dziwi. Z drugiej, intrygujący głos Islandki oraz synthowe, rozlane melodie i płaski bas to z pewnością naleciałości z jej macierzystego zespołu. Tym jest także fakt, ze płyta zawiera remix Your Desperation w wykonaniu zaprzyjaźnionego z artystkami Hante.

undertheskin - N E G A T I V E (2019) EN

Solo project by Mariusz Łuniewski is definitely not a new thing on the Polish and World scenes. After well-received debut in 2015 (the best-selling alternative album on Bandacmp at one point), a new album appeared this year, one entitled Negative.

Undertheskin was so welcome in the world because of his catchy approach to atmospheric, industrial coldwave. His gloomy but also attractive vocal reminds me of progressive rock's one to some extend and sometimes with traditional coldwave, especially that it sounds in frozen, unsettling void. It is barely filled with samples and synths, the void's still there.

On the other hand, Łuniewski feels also good when it comes to writing catchy songs that could be, I'm not afraid to say that, successful on radio charts. And it's mostly about Burn. Melodic chorus sung with appropriate charisma and a lot of dark climate of industrial electronics and coldwave music.

undertheskin - N E G A T I V E (2019) PL

Solowy projekt Mariusza Łuniewskiego to na pewno nie debiutant na polskiej i światowej scenie. Po znakomicie przyjętym debiucie w 2015 (najlepiej sprzedający się album alternatywny na Bandcampie), w tym roku ukazała się druga płyta długogrająca zatytułowana Negative.

Undertheskin zachwycił świat swoim przebojowym podejściem do klimatycznego, industrialnego coldwave'u. Ponury a jednocześnie pociągający wokal kojarzy się trochę z progresywnym rockiem, a trochę z tradycyjną zimną falą, zwłaszcza że odzywa się on w mroźnej, niepokojącej próżni. Zapełnić się ją starają sample i synthy, ale ta próżnia wciąż tam jest.

Z drugiej strony, Łuniewskiemu nie obce jest pisanie wpadających w ucho, w zasadzie, nie zawaham się tego powiedzieć, radiowych kawałków, które spokojnie poradziłyby sobie na listach przebojów, myślę zwłaszcza o Burn. Melodyjny refren zaśpiewany z odpowiednią przebojowością, a do tego wciąż przecież mroczna atmosfera industrialnej elektroniki i zimnofalowego grania.
