The Coral Sea - Golden Planet Sky (2023)

Rey Villalobos' The Coral Sea was one of  the most important bands of my younger years. Firelight was the album that opened my eyes on the dreamy side of indie rock and Villalobos' voice was the one I thought about when thinking about the moodiest of vocals. After a while, the artist decided to make solo music under the moniker of House of Wolves and now The Coral Sea is finally back. But Golden Planet Sky is Villalobos solo once again.

So it's not going to be very surprising to say that music-wise, the new album is closer to House of Wolves than to the old The Coral Sea. Once again, it is an intimate experience with Villalobos warm and dreamy voice and his melancholic music. It's like less depressive Raised by Swans, more acoustic Ruby Haunt and less flashy Cigarettes After Sex. And while it is a solo project now, it doesn't mean the main guy is alone. There's actually a nice variety of instruments with horns (played by Kelly Pratt) or baritone (John Morgan Askew), making this dream pop music sound like a really well-done art rock.

House of Wolves - Daughter of the Sea (2015) EN

If I was to choose miss of moody and thrilling vocals, I would undoubtedly pick Rey Villalobos and his high-pitched whispers. The vocalist of a great band The Coral Sea ("Ah. Ah. Ah." anyone?) publishes under the name that is a literal translation of his surname. That's why there's a metal name while the music is as far from being metal as it can be. It's delicate and beautiful, there's hardly better adjective to it. Full of pain and love and every other item from a spectre of feelings. And there's acoustic guitar, "vintage grand piano, laid-back drums  & mellotrons dusted throughout" as it's written on his Bandcamp. What else can you wish for?

Among his inspirations, Villalobos enlists Chopin, when he was younger, he studied classical music. Apart from unique voice, the attention of a listener of his music draw dark melodies and soul-stirring lyrics.

"Feel like getting your heart broken this afternoon? Give Rey Villalobos‘s new material a few moments of your attention" compliments YVYNYL and you could hardly disagree.

"Daughter of the Sea" was recorded and mixed by Darragh Nolan in Ireland, it costs 8$.

Jeśli miałbym wybierać miss nastrojowych i wywierających ciarki wokali, bez wątpienia wskazałbym na Reya Villalobosa i jego wysokie szepty. Wokalista skądinąd genialnego zespołu The Coral Sea (ktoś zna "Ah. Ah. Ah."?) publikuje pod nazwą, która jest bezpośrednim tłumaczeniem nazwiska Californijczyka. Stąd metalowa nazwa, a muzyka tak daleko od metalu jak to możliwe. Spokojna i piękna, trudno użyć innego przymiotnika. Pełna bólu i miłości i całego spektrum emocji. A do tego gitara akustyczna, "vintage'owe pianino, wyluzowana perkusja i zakurzony melotron" jak pisze na swoim Bandcampie. Czego chcieć więcej?

Villalobos wśród swoich inspiracji wymienia Chopina, a w młodości studiował muzykę klasyczną. Poza unikalnym głosem uwagę w jego kompozycjach przyciągają mroczne melodie i wzruszające teksty.

"Masz ochotę na złamane serce? Poświęć chwilę uwagi nowemu materiałowi Villalobosa" zachwala YVYNYL i trudno się z tym nie zgodzić.

"Daughter of the Sea" nagrał i zmiksował Darragh Nolan w Irlandii, płyta kosztuje 31 zł (8$).
