Cats of Transnistria - IV (2025)

POV: A band checks all your personal boxes to catch your interest. Having a great, unusual name; being from a beautiful and unusual place; and most importantly, creating magical music. No wonder that the Helsinki-based Cats of Transnistria have appeared on this blog many times already and it is safe to say that with every new album they will be featured here too. 

Because the band's dream pop is how this should be done. And since it's been already 6 (!) years since their previous (and my favourite!) album, I had to post about IV. Henna Emilia Hietamäki and Tuomas Alatalo have a great ability of creating moody, intimate dreamy tracks that do not shy away from using lightly louder guitars as it is the case in very old-school rock like parts of Thunder as an Arrow (no wonder that the video to this track looks like taken from the 90s.). I appreciate that, but still my favourites are the songs that mesmerize with repetitive structure and airy atmosphere. Like Horrors, a beautiful little nightmare.

And so the dream finally comes to an end with the extremely airy Ceiling of Stars and one can only want to go back. The cosy, very artistic and drawing from other genres dream pop from Finland is quite addictive.

The dreamlike Cats of Transnistria are regular guests on the blog so I won't digress on whether or not there are in fact cats in Transnistria. The most important is that the Finns couldn't get left out after they released the new album called Aligning .

The band rom the North's style didn't changed much through the years. This is the next instance of dealing with Tuomas Alatalo's gloomy guitar compositions that are closer to some experimental bluesmen like Brother Grimm that to "normal" pop/rocks. Secondly, the airy and at the same time emotional vocals by Henna Emilia Hietamäki plus the super climatic violins from Sanna Komi.

Another characteristic trait of their music are long, never-in-hurry and always poignant compositions like the single track Mountain High. This music could perhaps be defined as instrumental version of the ambient Grouper-esque pop with a huge deal of the Scandinavian melancholy (just try to listen to The Light and not get teary).

Zjawiskowe Cats of Transnistria to stali bywalcy tego bloga. Nie będę się więc rozwodzić nad tym czy a Naddniestrzu są koty czy ich nie ma, najważniejsze, że Finów nie mogło zabraknąć także przy okazji premiery nowiutkiej płyty Aligning .

Styl zespołu z północy nie zmienił się wiele przez lata. Po raz kolejny mamy więc do czynienia z mrocznymi aranżacjami Tuomasa Alatalo grającego na gitarze ale w sposób bliższy raczej eksperymentalnym bluesmanom w stylu Borther Grimm niż "normalnym" pop/rockom. Po drugie eteryczny i jednocześnie wypełniony emocjami wokal Henna Emilia Hietamäki a do tego nad wyraz klimatyczne skrzypce Sanny Komi.

Kolejną charakterystyczną cechą Finów są długie, niespieszące się nigdzie i trzymające przez cały czas w napięciu kompozycje jak choćby singlowe Mountain High. Muzykę zespołu można by zdefiniować jako instrumentalna wersja ambient popu spod znaku Grouper z ogromną dawką skandynawskiej melancholii (posłuchajcie The Light i spróbujcie się nie wzruszyć).

The Finns of the Helsinki-based Cats of Transnistria are coming back with their new album that's supposed to influence the audience just like opium does. They amaze us once again not only with their fantastically weird name but also the music, this time less acoustic folk-like and more like taken out from a dream.

The important changes since "Divine" would be extending the bands with a violinist Sanna Komi and different way Henna Emilia Hietamäki's vocal sounds. The former added tonnes of atmosphere to the project's music. Their songs are now even sadder, they appeal to such feelings as regret, longing and loneliness. It's all evoked by both the strings ruling the backgrounds of the tracks and in lyrics. For example in "Nightingale": "Another nightingale/ Ready to get their piece/ There’s always someone for you/ And never me".

And Hietamäki sounds on "Opium" more in a dreampop way, her dispersed vocal is at the same time sad and very attractive in a way. Like a broken heart and loneliness should. And the best example here is probably the best track on the album, "Tunnel" in which her murmuring and the accompanying violins sound dramatically sad and somewhat energetic at the same time.

Finowie z helsińskiego Cats of Transnistria powracają z nową płytą mającą działać na publikę jak prawdziwe opium. Po raz kolejny zachwycają nie tylko fantastycznie dziwną nazwą ale i muzyką, która, tym razem, jest mniej akustyczno-folkowa, tym razem jest wyjęta ze snu.

Najważniejszymi zmianami jest dodanie do składu skrzypaczki Sanny Komi i zmiana brzmienia wokalu Henny Emilii Hietamäki. Ta pierwsza dodała tony atmosfery do muzyki projektu. Ich utwory są teraz jeszcze smutniejsze, w jeszcze większym stopniu wykorzystują takie uczucia jak żal, tęsknota i samotność. Wszystko to pojawia się zarówno w smyczkach królujących w tłach od pierwszego do ostatniego utworu, jak i w wyśpiewywanych tekstach. Świetnie na przykład w "Nightingale": "Kolejny słowik gotowy na swój kawałek, dla ciebie zawsze ktoś jest, nigdy dla mnie".

Hietamäki z kolei brzmi na "Opium" dużo bardziej dreampopowo, rozproszony wokal jest jednocześnie wyjątkowo smutny jak i w pewien sposób pociągający. Tak jak powinno brzmieć złamane serce i tęsknota. A najlepiej w najciekawszym na płycie "Tunnel", gdzie jej mruczando i akompaniujące mu skrzypce są zarówno żywe jak i dramatycznie smutne.

It's still Christmas time, let us then listen to some music from the most Christmas country where the lights are shining in the streets as early as in October - in Finland. First, something about cats. Cats of Transnistria is "a slow and deep duo from Helsinki". They create long, mesmerizing pieces showing how much they don't want to hurry to express their emotions. They also call their music "doom pop" which is very suitable. Because in their songs, just like for example in the opening Let It Happen This Way, pop-folk melodies and romantic backing vocals meet coarse post-rock backgrounds that makes you understand that not everything is in order. Or actually perhaps it is, in music, just like in life, it can't be too beautiful and sweet.

Henna Emilia Hietamäki sings about very delicate and personal things - about trust, about separation and about love (lovers are coming and going/are you here and are you mine?" - Feel the Divine). But together with the unsettling sounds of guitar (by Tuomas Alatalo) sounding like winter wind gain some extra layer - a universal context. Because it is not only my pain, we all go through things like this and we all feel such emotions. Its worth feeling them together with the Helsinki based band.

Jeszcze są święta, zobaczmy więc czego słucha się w najbardziej świątecznym kraju, gdzie światełka na ulicach jaśnieją już od października - w Finlandii. Najpierw rzecz o kotach. Cats of Transnistria to "wolny i głęboki duet z Helsinek". Tworzą długie, hipnotyzujące kompozycje, w których dają do zrozumienia jak bardzo nie spieszą się z przekazywaniem swoich emocji. Gdzie indziej piszą o swojej muzyce "doom pop", co nie jest bez racji. Bo, jak na przykład w otwierającym płytę "Let It Happen This Way" pop-folkowe melodie i chórki spotykają chropowatą post-rockową w tle, która daje znać, że nie wszystko jest tak jak być powinno. A raczej jest jak powinno bo w muzyce jak i w życiu nie może być za ładnie.

Henna Emilia Hietamäki śpiewa o bardzo delikatnych i osobistych rzeczach, o zaufaniu, o rozstaniu, o miłości ("kochankowie przychodzą i odchodzą/ jesteś tutaj? jesteś mój?" - Feel the Divine). Jednak w połączeniu z dźwiękami gitary Tuomasa Alatalo niepokojącymi niczym szum zimowego wiatru nocą zyskują coś jeszcze - uniwersalny kontekst. To nie tylko mój ból, wszyscy przechodzimy przez takie rzeczy i wszyscy czujemy takie emocje. Warto poczuć je razem z helsińskim zespołem.
