It's been already 6 years (!) since the Swedish band WE.THE PIGS' debut EP I posted about on this blog back in its beginnings. The musicians finally (!) released their first LP and, fortunately, I can safely say it was wort waiting for as the self-titled album shows a lot of noisy and dreamy magic.

Their noise pop is characterized with lo-fi, bedroom recordings quality and it directly influences the haziness and mystery surrounding the melodies. To dig through the noise and the whole fog of imperfect sounds to reach the airy vocals and lofty tunes is a fantastic experience. And very rewarding too as songs like Drift to Sleep or Curtains show how beautifully merged the ethereality and catchiness are here. It goes without saying that the airy vocals and ballad-like compositions boost the ethereal atmosphere that is thick and moody from the album's beginning to its end. Not to mention the melancholic, city-based and emotional lyrics. And even when the band steps on it and gets more indie-rock powerful in songs like Fuck Your Songs or Vi striker, the overall blanket of haze and dream-like atmosphere swiftly reappear to provide more airy vibes for the audience.

Something less overwhelming to finish the journey through the country of the three crowns. After all, even in Scandinavia it's sometimes sunny, the sky is blue (as it is on the album cover) and people want to live. Why "pigs"? In Swedish you call someone who as a sweet tooth "a sugar pig" and someone who's dirty that he is dirty like a pig. Is there a better way to define shoegaze? Dirty with guitars, with sweet and melodic vocals. It's melodic ("Fly" is catchy as hell) and noisy - shoegaze classic.

Their inspiration comes from "the art of being bored", interests involves long drinks (popular in Scandinavia cocktails with little alcohol (up to 15%)) and their favourite music bands are the shoegaze gods: Ride, My Bloody Valentine and Slowdive. w.tp is less airy than MBV but more lively than Ride. Shoegaze is not very homogenous and thus it's so fascinating. Pop but not pop.

Na zakończenie wędrówki po kraju trzech koron coś mniej przytłaczającego. W końcu nawet w Skandynawii świeci słońce, niebo jest błękitne (patrz okładka płyty) i czasem chce się żyć. Czemu świnie? Po szwedzku na wielbiciela mówi się cukrowa świnio, a na brudasa (tak jak u nas), że jest brudny jak świnia. Czy można wyobrazić sobie lepszą definicję shoegaze'u? Gitarowo brudny ze słodkim i melodyjnym wokalem? Jest melodyjnie ("Fly" wpada w ucho jak, właśnie, jak mucha) i głośno - shoegaze'owa klasyka.

Ich inspiracja wynika ze "sztuki bycia znudzonym", zainteresowania obejmują long drinki (koktajle o niskiej zawartości alkoholu (do 15%), bardzo popularne w Skandynawii), a muzyczni idole to tuzy shoegaze'u Ride, My Bloody Valentine czy Slowdive. w.tp to mniej eteryczne MBV a bardziej skoczna wersja Ride - shoegaze jest mało homogeniczny i dlatego tak fascynujący. Niby pop a nie pop.
