Brass Box - The Cathedral (2019) EN

After seducing me with their single Rivers that appeared on the blog in February, the Californian Brass Box come back with a newly released debut album. As could be guessed, The Cathedral  doesn't disappoint in any way.

The band's compositions' character is vastly influenced by the fantastic Ammo Bankoff's vocals. They sometimes sound almost metal-like powerful (Bats), sometimes airy and always as if taken from an album from several decades ago. That's why Brass Box gets a lot of those retro vibes that make them stand out from the enormous number of Californian shoegaze projects.

This feeling is even greater in Latency in which the instruments go together with the vocal making the song a tribute to the music of the 80s (am I detecting some Dead Can Dance vibes?) and what's more, it's the most memorable track of the album.

Po urzeczeniu mnie singlem Rivers, który pojawił się na blogu w lutym, Kalifornijczycy z Brass Box wracają z wydanym w końcu debiutanckim albumem. Tak jak należało się spodziewać, The Cathedral  nie zawodzi pod żadnym względem. 

Kompozycje zespołu naznaczone sa przede wszystkim wokalem fantastycznej Ammo Bankoff. Te brzmią czasem metalowo potężnie (Bats), czasem eterycznie, a zawsze jak wyjęte z albumu sprzed kilku dekad. Dzięki temu Brass Box zyskują jeszcze więcej retro vibe'u wyróżniającego go spośród innych, jakże licznych, kalifornijskich zespołów shoegaze'owych. 

Wrażenie to pogłębia się jeszcze w Latency, gdzie do wokalu dostosowują się instrumenty tworząc prawdziwy hymn pochwalny dla muzyki lat 80-tych (czyżbym wyczuwał inspiracje Dead Can Dance?), a do tego jest chyba najbardziej zapadającym w pamięć utworem na płycie.

Quartet lead by Ammo Bankoff and a single with extremely melodic and atmospheric shoegaze. It seems to be more coming, fingers crossed for the Californians. The single costs 1 USD.

Debutants from South Korea showing some crushingly loud but also very graceful shoegaze. The trio is led by an artist known as Gyungwon who still... attend a high school. Talent to be envied. Two tracks cost 2 USD.

Minor Movements - We Dreamed to Each Other

In March their debut album is going to be released but now we can taste the appetizer in the form of this atmospheric single. The Nebraska band shows their climatic but also pretty march-like track. It costs 1 USD.

Sirati Dharma feat. Ray Marshall - Black Pond

Debutants from Indonesia with music that is so mature and so good that they do't sound like ones. Loud and psychedelic shoegaze with howling vocals and intriguing vocals. The long album should be out soon. The single costs 1 USD.

Spark the Forest - The Suffering in Erosion

Inspired by both Hans Zimmer and If These Trees Could Talk musicians from Chicago come back with new material after two years since the last minialbum. As could be guessed, it's some cinematic post-rock of the best quality. The single can be yours for whatever you pay.

Kwartet dowodzony przez Ammo Bankoff i singiel z bardzo melodyjnym i bardzo nastrojowym shoegaze'em. Wygląda na to, ze będzie ich więcej, trzymam za Kalifornijczyków kciuki. Singiel kosztuje 4 złote (1 USD).

Debiutanci z Korei Południowej pokazują kawał przygniatająco głośnego, ale niepozbawionego finezji i gracji shoegaze'u. Trio dowodzone jest przez artystę znanego jako Gyungwon, który wciąż jeszcze.... uczy się w liceum. Pozazdrościć talentu. Dwa kawałki kosztują 8 złotych (2 USD).

W marcu premiera debiutanckiej płyty, a tymczasem możemy zaostrzyć sobie na nią zęby dzięki temu klimatycznemu singlowi. Zespół z Nebraski pokazuje swój klimatyczny, a równocześnie bardzo marszowy utwór. Kawałek kosztuje 4 złote (1 USD).
