Blush - Blush (2021)

It's incredible how many shoegaze/dreamy bands are called Blush (or similar like Blushing or Blush Response) now.  This time it's a debuting band from Singapore whose sophomore EP called, you guessed it, Blush, presents some adorable and catchy noise pop.

The band may be new but the artists were involved in quite a big number of Singapore-based projects, most notably including Sobs. You can hear that they know what they do - the guitars produce a good-quality noise and bring exciting melodies while Soffi Peters' vocals are dreamy and airy, just as they should be. The EP is very short and includes the previous single track Best Friend and two quality noise pop tracks. And just as it is advertised (that "ubiquitous to Blush’s sonics are a crescendo fuzz that’s thick as syrup, and as cathartic as it is cacophonic"), they are very noisy and loud and this loudness transforms into an ethereal bliss in the listeners' minds (especially in the more slowcore-like, album-finishing Suck).

Paint The Sky Red - There is a Tomorrow You Don't Know (2019) EN

It's a safe bet that anyone interested in post-rock music probably knows the band from Singapore. No wonder that this year Paint the Sky Red are going to visit the Belgian Dunk! Festival. Somewhat to celebrate it, the band released a new album. Spoiler alert: it's good.

The artists dedicate the album to people "forcibly separated from their loved ones, who have had their land and property stolen, and who are being oppressed or persecuted for their beliefs", things that really are the shameful signs of our times. It seems that this album is an attempt to pour some hope in people's heart, to show that everything can as well change tomorrow.

It starts with the A Light for Every Shadow, a song that is filled with tension and some extremely pleasant strings sounds. The further the album goes, the more guitar it gets but the way the compositions are diverse, prevents the audience from even thinking about being bored. Especially when they get to some particularly epic fragments in Every Breath Is a Gift.

cosmologists - Learning (Grandma's Piano) (2018) EN

In March this year, Singapore based artist, known as comsologists' Grandmother died. He created this tribute album using truly lo-fi recordings from a few moments he played with her old piano. The effect of this experiment is this lovely album filled with fantastic atmosphere of delicate neoclassical music.

Besides the uncanny atmosphere of the piano keys, he album offers also a great way to sneak-peak the everyday life of the artist's family. The muffled voices in the background, the normal sounds of life. This alone would be a great symbol and tribute for the Grandmother. The tracks played by the artist don't sound improvised, quite on the contrary, the delicacy of him touching the keys and the hum of life in the background seem as if they were carefully planned and absolutely in tune with each other.

Learning was absolutely not in vain.
