Swœr - Patina (2021)

Erik Swiatloch and his ambitious post-rock music project Swœr is back on this blog. I posted about the artist five years ago and he hasn't appeared on my music radar since then. Until at the end of the last year, he released a short but beautiful album called Patina.

The tracks he included on the album have titles referring to various geographical places and for me, obviously, the most interesting is the second one: Sandomierz being a small, historic town in Poland, mostly known as the setting of one of the most popular TV series. I presume Swiatloch took inspirations from the places he visited and, since it means he was on Svalbard as well, I'm very jealous. The music he creates is very much guitar-oriented and since he does everything by himself (and "the mixing happens at home on the couch with wine") there's a certain lo-fi atmosphere to it as well. But the most important thing is that his main goal is to create a beautiful soundscape of guitar noise that can transport the audience to some other place (probably the ones referenced in the titles). The drones are spacious and the pace slow, making the music not-overwhelming and quite soft while very satisfying at the same time, especially when the German artist adds some nature-derived field recordings and ethereal vocals towards the end of this musical journey.

German artist known as Swœr wants to reach the humans' sensible side with his delicate post-rock, he records everything on his own and mixes the music while sitting on his sofa, sipping wine. But the most important thing is how good he is at this.

His new album includes 12 tracks that "strive for silence and scream for a movement". he has his own philosophy behind this music trying to deal with his inner child who, just like it happens with every human being, dies while growing up and never comes back. The artist expresses it mostly with the sound of guitars. They are not rough nor explicitly loud, Swœr's music is rather an ambient played with strings instead of electronics.

But not every track is idle, "voices ring out and fall silent" has its unsettling rhythm and catchy flow and "try to run backwards" those almost tribal whispers changing back and forth into atmospheric vocal. Still, the whole thing sounds like music that's supposed to be listened to while watching an autumn rain.

Niemiecki artysta tworzący jako Swœr pragnie dotrzeć do ludzkiej wrażliwości swoim cichym post-rockiem. Wszystko nagrywa sam, a ścieżki miksuje na kanapie z lampką wina w dłoni. Najważniejsze jednak jak dobrze mu to wychodzi.

Jego nowy album składa się z 12 utworów, które "dążą do ciszy i krzyczą o ruch". Ma swoją filozofię, artysta rozlicza się nim ze swoim wewnętrznym dzieckiem, które u każdego człowieka "umiera w trakcie dorastania i nigdy nie wraca". Pokazuje to głównie dźwiękami gitar. Nie są one ani drażniące ani wzniośle głośne, muzyka Swœr przypomina raczej ambient zagrany na strunach zamiast elektroniką.

Wcale nie wszystkie utwory wcale są pokornego serca, "voices ring out and fall silent" ma swój niespokojny rytm i wciągający flow a "try to run backwards" niemal tribalowe szepty zamieniające się miejscami z atmosferycznym wokalem. Mimo to, całość brzmi jak muzyka, której należy słuchać zapatrzonym w jesienny deszcz.
