Lorem Ipsum - Vivre encore (2021)

The French band Lorem Ipsum is probably one of the most intriguing things I've listened to this year. Their music can only be described as neoclassical post-hardcore and this says it all. The combination of classical instruments and desperate vocals is stunning and can be admired on the band's second album Vivre encore.

Perhaps neoclassicism is not the best term here as the compositions on the album are usually kept in a very post-hardcore-like, fast-paced and chaotic way. The violins (that are sooo exciting with those vibes) as well as piano keys resemble more some crazy folk energetic tunes but suited up in a nice, baroque form. The complexity and the untamed energy of this music fill the soul of the listeners with powerful joy. And there's still the coolest part - the screamo vocals. Those are, as the genre dictates, screaming, desperate and violent. The contrast here is what builds the uncanny awe that stayed with me for the whole time the album was on.

You can hardly not appreciate the neoclassicism here either. Some introductions are composed as delicate, beautiful pieces for piano and violins only to get violently torn into pieces after a few seconds. And to make the whole thing even more peculiar, the album is meant as a "concept album about body failures" which fittingly corresponds with the cover art but unfortunately cannot be admired without the knowledge of French. Still - unique and interesting, just like the whole release.

Altair - Nuestro enemigo (2019) EN

It'a a rare thing for such a very post-hardcore music to be posted about on this blog. So the fact that they are here means that this music is a bit different, good, intriguing, whatever you call it. Let's listen together to Nuestro enemigo.

In their own words, the band situate their music on the boarder between screamo and post-rock. And it's very audible on the album. Although it starts with this desperate, aggressive but also melancholic in a way vocal/scream. But this album is not only about it. A nice touch is including some spoken word vocal which in Spanish for me automatically sounds like a sample taken from a movie. Separate words of admiration are to be said about the music layer. The guitars and compositions often relate closely to post-rock, just as said before, and some tracks like Distancias, fronteras with its loud finish, or the title track Nuestro enemigo boost this opinion. Not to mention the almost perfectly post-rock finish in Afasia.

Altair - Nuestro enemigo (2019) PL

Rzadko kiedy na tym blogu wita tak czysty post hardcore. A więc sam fakt, że Hiszpanie z Altair się tutaj znaleźli świadczy o tym, ze ich muzyka jest inna, dobra, intrygująca. Niepotrzebne skreślić. Posłuchajcie ze mną Nuestro enemigo.

Sami sytuują swoją muzykę na granicy screamo i post-rocku. I to słychać na płycie doskonale. Zaczyna się co prawda tym desperackim, agresywnym ale też na swój sposób melancholijnym wokalem/screamem. Tylko że to nie tylko o niego na płycie chodzi. Fajnie brzmi też wokal mówiony, spoken word po hiszpańsku automatycznie brzmi dla mnie jak wyjęty z filmu. Na osobne słowa zasługuje natomiast warstwa instrumentalna. Gitary i kompozycje często kojarzą się z post-rockiem właśnie, a takie kawałki jak zakończone głośnym finałem Distancias, fronteras czy tytułowe Nuestro enemigo, tylko to podkreślają, nie wspominają już o czysto post-rockowym finiszu w Afasii.

Winter Dust - Sense by Erosion (2018) EN

They describe themselves in this way: "We write and play post-hardcore songs trying to reach a single moment of empathy", they are inspired by Caspian, Russian Circles, and Explosions In The Sky and they have just released a new album. Sense by Erosion talks about "leaving people, leaving places, parting ways, losing things" and, although the members of Winter Dust live in different countries, the album makes a coherent composition.

The first part of the album is supposed to be the more nervously sounding part Indeed, here we deal with heavy music balanced with a couple of softer, beautiful moments, with aggressive vocal screaming ot poignant lyrics (as in the brilliant, marching All My Friends Are Leaving Town). 

Also indeed, the second part is more emotive. The band is here headed towards mostly instrumental post-rock compositions beginning with the very much experimental Furnace up to tracks that are both extremely beautiful and generating huge doses of atmosphere like Cruel June, or Stay. The album is great to shout out frustrations as well as to shed a melancholic tear.

Winter Dust - Sense by Erosion (2018) PL

Piszą o sobie tak: "piszemy i gramy post-hardcore'owe piosenki usiłując osiągnąć pojedynczy moment empatii", inspirują się Caspianem, Russian Circles, czy Explosions In The Sky i właśnie wydali nową płytę. Sense by Erosion opowiada o "opuszczaniu ludzi, rozstaniach i utracie rzeczy" i, mimo ze muzycy Winter Dust przebywają na co dzień w różnych krajach, tworzy spójną, wciągającą kompozycję. 

Pierwsza część płyty według założeń zespołu miała być tą nerwową częścią. Faktycznie, mamy tutaj do czynienia z ciężką muzyką łagodzoną kilkoma łagodnie pięknymi fragmentami, oraz z agresywnym wokalem wykrzykującym przejmujące teksty (np w świetnym, opartym na marszowym rytmie perkusji All My Friends Are Leaving Town). 

Faktycznie też, druga część jest bardziej emocjonalna. Tutaj zespół przechodzi w stronę głównie instrumentalnych, post-rockowych kompozycji zaczynając od mocno eksperymentalnego Furnace przez kawałki szalenie piękne i generujące olbrzymie dawki nastroju i piękna jak Cruel June, czy Stay. Płyta jest więc najlepsza zarówno do wykrzyczenia frustracji jak i do powzruszania się nad wspomnieniami.

One With The Riverbed - Solace (2018) PL

Nastrojowa nazwa, nastrojowe logo, czy wizerunki michigańskiej przyrody na cover arcie, takie jest amerykańskie One With The Riverbed łączące w swojej muzyce nastrojowość z bezkompromisowością i agresją eksperymentalnego metalu. Można tego doświadczyć na nowej płycie - Solace.

Album rozwija się powoli w Wither, spokojne, pełne atmosfery intro działa na całość wyjątkowo dobrze, dodając płycie wielowymiarowości i głębi. Dopiero w Apparition dostajemy sporo energetycznego wrzasku i mocnej muzyki. Ale znowu, końcówka kawałka to powrót do spokojnego, post-rockowego grania. 

Poza tym nieoczywistym tempem grania, zespół wyróżnia wokal - być może bardziej screamo niż metalowy, nadzwyczaj ekspresyjny i w takich kawałkach jak Parasitic, czy Blossom robi potężne wrażenie. Cała płyta to kawał dobrego, post-metalowego grania z kilkoma bardzo zaskakującymi elementami.

One With The Riverbed - Solace (2018) EN

Atmospheric name, atmospheric logo, atmospheric views of Michigan nature on the cover art, this is the American One With The Riverbed combining in their music atmosphere with the straightforwardness and aggression of experimental metal. You can experience it on their new album, Solace.

It develops slowly in Wither, the calm, filled with ambiance intro works really well, adding the depth to the whole album. It's not earlier than in Apparition that we get a solid dose of energetic screams and heavy music. But then again, its finish makes a come back to the calmer, post-rock music.

Apart from this unorthodox pace, the band is characterized by the vocal - perhaps more screamo than metal, extremely expressive makes a huge impact on the audience, especially in tracks such as Parasitic or Blossom. The whole album is a fat piece of good post-metal music with some very surprising elements to it.

Carolines - Hullámokkal (2018) EN

Carolines are from Hungary and they give us a small peak into the Hungarian heavy music scene. Their new album (with a beautiful cover art) is called Hullámokkal,  meaning "with the wave" and shows some good, loud and guitar music spiced with expressive vocals.

Aggressive, but in this aggression also extremely energetic sound of the band is balanced with samples appearing from time to time, adding some post-rock/cinematic vibe to the whole thing. But still, the Hungarian's music's core is the screaming, hardcore vocal that sometimes sounds like desperate cries, sometimes like metal scream and sometimes like clean singing. But it wouldn't achieve anything alone without the very solid instrumental layer, more post-rock than punk/hardcore in the way how it is written and how complex it is. 

Not to be too monotonous, the band can also create straight post-rock tracks (M4) and more... trip-hop ones (Ember). Also, the exotic vibe in the music is provided by the Hungarian language that is not only mysterious but also very fittingly expressive.

Carolines - Hullámokkal (2018) PL

Carolines są z Węgier i dają nam mały wgląd w węgierską scenę muzyki ciężkiej. Ich nowa płyta (z pięknym cover artem) nazywa się Hullámokkal,  co znaczy tyle co "z falą" i pokazuje dobre, głośne, gitarowe granie okraszone ekspresyjnym wokalem.

Agresywne, ale w tej agresji również niezwykle energetyczne brzmienie zespołu równoważą pojawiające się od czasu do czasu sample, nadające całości bardziej post-rockowo/kinowego charakteru. Niemniej, rdzeniem muzyki Węgrów jest wrzaskliwy, hardcore'owy wokal raz brzmiący jak desperackie okrzyki, raz jak metalowy scream, a czasem nawet jak czysty śpiew. Niczego by jednak sam nie osiągnął gdyby nie solidna warstwa instrumentalna, bardziej post-rockowa w sposobie, w jaki jest napisana i złożona, niż punkowo-hardcore'owa.

Żeby nie było jednak jednostajnie, Węgrzy potrafią robić zarówno stricte post-rockowe kawałki (M4) jak i... trip-hopowe (Ember). Za egzotykę w muzyce Carolines robi język węgierski, brzmiący nie tylko zagadkowo, ale i właściwie dla tak ekspresyjnej muzyki.

Hullámokkal można mieć za ile się chce.

Mortar - past present future (2018) EN

The Mayasian hardcore has never sounded as good as on the new album by Mortar. This is obviously my joke because I have next to nothing about the Malaysian hardcore scene but if it's at least half as good as the new release by the band from Kuantan, it''s worth checking out.

Just like under the fire from a real mortar, we are being attacked from the very beginning with aggressive vocals and hardly less aggressive guitars. But also there's no mistake that Mortar has being experimental written down in the modus operandi, "Bruised Heart" introduces some peace and even swinging guitars. But as you'd expect, this is only a silence before another storm as "Anaerobic" is made of next waves of screamy noise with some interesting samples within.

The most interesting sound is shown in "past.present.future", a track very complex for a hardcore noise, serving some well-leveled spoken word and multi-dimensional composition together with the solid screaming.

Mortar - past present future (2018) PL

Malezyjski hardcore nigdy nie brzmiał tak dobrze jak na nowej płycie Mortar. To oczywiście zgrywa, bo niewiele wiem o malezyjskiej scenie hardcore'owej, jeśli jednak jest co najmniej w połowie tak dobra, jak wydawnictwo zespołu z Kuantanu, warto się nią zainteresować.

Tak jak pod ostrzałem prawdziwego moździerza, od początku jesteśmy atakowani non-stop agresywnymi wokalami i nieustępującymi im w agresji gitarami. Jednak nie na darmo Mortar ma w modus operandi wpisaną eksperymentalność, "Bruised Heart" wprowadza z kolei spokój i kołyszące wręcz gitary. Tak jak należało się jednak spodziewać, jest to cisza przed kolejną burzą bo "Anaerobic" to kolejne fale krzykliwego hałasu poprzetykanego ciekawymi samplami.

Najciekawiej brzmi tytułowy "past.present.future", utwór bardzo, jak na hardcore'owy hałas, skomplikowany i złożony, serwujący oprócz krzyków również wyważony spoken word i wielowymiarową kompozycję.

Godaughter - Godaughter (2018) EN

Godaughter, post-rockers from the English city of Canterbury, who, in their not-so-soft music, deal with "Communicating without words to mass languages", have released new album. Their mostly instrumental music on "Godaughter" (apparently their communication WITH words is limited to one word only) makes a combination of post-rock and the energy of the punk/screamo genres

The album is opened by a long, slowly developing track, this relatively peaceful post-rock in "Yellow Winter" evolves ultimately into energetically loud finale in which you can even find some of the screaming vocals. Next songs offer their best at once - "Levels" its almost doom metal riffs, "Sandman" post-rock variety and "Dume" a lot of metal-like space.

The Kitchener -Sparks-Mcvey trio have created some good instrumental music that is best served very loud.

Godaughter - Godaughter (2018) PL

Godaughter, postrockersi z angielskiego Canterbury zajmujący się w swojej nielekkiej muzyce "komunikowaniem się bez słów z językami mas" wydali nową płytkę. Ich instrumentalna głównie muzyka na "Godaughter" (najwyraźniej komunikacja słowna ogranicza się w ich przypadku do jednego słowa) to wypadkowa post-rocka i punkowo-screamo energii.

Płyta otwiera się długim, powoli rozwijającym się utworem. Stosunkowo spokojny post-rock w "Yellow Winter" ewoluuje w końcu w energetycznie głośny post-metalowy finał, w którym brzmi nawet trochę wrzaskliwego wokalu. Następne kawałki od razu oferują to, co mają w zanadrzu najgłośniejszego - "Levels" prawie doom metalowe riffy, "Sandman" post-rockowe zróżnicowanie, a "Dume" sporo metalowej przestrzeni.

Trio Kitchener -Sparks-Mcvey stworzyło kawał dobrego instrumentalnego grania, polecane podawać na bardzo głośno.

Forever Losing Sleep - Ritualistic (2018) EN

Forever Losing Sleep is a band from New Jersey that after releasing their debut album in 2014 disappeared and is gradually appearing back this year finally. In April they showed the word their new EP that is short but managed to catch my attention.

No wonder as "Ritualistic" is filled with dark emotions all the way to the top. The combination of post-rock music and vocal reminding of the old, touching emo (and sometimes of my beloved Mew ("Dazed")) provides a lot of those. The musicians don't try to be super-duper catchy, they are careful to build up an atmosphere and tension in the tracks that create one, longer work. And the finish in "Broken Dance" with, indeed, ritualistically sounding drums, is extraordinarily satisfying.

The lyrics are also accordingly dark and touching as, for example, "Will it ever end, I keep asking myself, how did I get here, shaking in the bathroom, will it ever end ... I was born to sin ". Dark and stunning. I'd listen to more of their stuff.

Forever Losing Sleep - Ritualistic (2018) PL

Forever Losing Sleep to zespół z New Jersey, który po wydaniu płyty w 2014 zniknął i pojawia się stopniowo dopiero w tym roku. W kwietniu wydał niedługą EP-kę ale to wystarczyło by przykuć moją uwagę.

I nic dziwnego, bo "Ritualistic" jest wypełniona po brzegi mrocznymi emocjami. Połączenie post-rockowej muzyki i wokalu rodem z dawnego, przejmującego emo (chociaż miejscami też trochę jak z mojego ulubionego Mew ("Dazed")) daje ich w nadmiarze. Muzycy nie starają się być nie wiadomo jak przebojowi, starannie budują atmosferę i napięcie w  tworzących jedną całość utworach. A finał w "Broken Dance" z, owszem, rytualistycznie brzmiącą perkusją jest wyjątkowo satysfakcjonujący.

Odpowiednio mroczne i przejmujące są też teksty, tak jak "pytam się sam siebie, czy to się kiedyś skończy, jak to się stało, że trzęsę się w łazience... Zrodziłem się do grzechu". Mroczne i mocne, posłuchałbym więcej.

The Air of Hiroshima - В руинах умирающей родины (2017) EN

The post-rock atmosphere and screamo aggression, can there be something with more anger within the realm of music? Five-pieces band from Nizhny Tagil behind the Ural Mountains is just like that. On their debut album they show a whole spectrum of their angry music.

Really well played on guitars, clear sounding drums and painfully screamy vocal by Sierhiy Shapovalov post-screamo fills "В руинах умирающей родины" (meaning: In the Ruins of Dying Fatherland) from the first to the last minute. Great idea was to hide the demonic vocal somewhere behind the loud instruments in "Начало начал" so the only hearable thing is the pure anger. From time to time there is some smoothing electrical sounds ("Как показалось тебе тогда") but it never  lasts too long, it shows much much the young Russians have to scream out about.

The lyrics are also pretty interesting as much as I can understand, they tend to involve some political-sociological criticism ("Мы сгнившие доски старого дома" - "We destroyed the walls of the old home") and some of the more universal one - as in "Глазами не затуманенными ненавистью" ("With eyes not clouded with hatred").

The Air of Hiroshima - В руинах умирающей родины (2017) PL

Atmosfera post-rocka i agresja screamo, czy można wymyślić coś bardziej gniewnego w obrębie muzyki? Pięcioosobowy skład z Niżnego Tagiłu daleko za Uralem taki właśnie jest. Na swojej debiutanckiej płycie pokazują pełen przekrój swojej gniewnej muzyki.

Znakomicie zagrane na gitarach, wyrazistej perkusji i zdartym do ostateczności głosie Siergieja Szapowałowa post-screamo wypełnia "В руинах умирающей родины" (czyli W ruinach umierającej ojczyzny") od deski do deski. Doskonałym pomysłem jest schowanie demonicznego wokalu gdzieś za głośny instrumentarium w "Начало начал", tak że nie słychać poszczególnych słów, a wyziera zza niego tylko wściekłość. Od czasu do czasu pojawiają się też łagodzące lekko klimat elektronika ("Как показалось тебе тогда") ale nigdy nie wytrzymuje zbyt długo, to pokazuje jak dużo do wykrzyczenia mają młodzi Rosjanie.

Ciekawie wyglądają również teksty grupy, o ile potrafię ogarnąć to zdarza im się krytyka polityczno-społeczna ("Мы сгнившие доски старого дома" - "Zburzyliśmy ściany starego domu") i bardziej uniwersalna - jak w "Глазами не затуманенными ненавистью" ("Z oczami nie przesłoniętymi nienawiścią").

Drifting Anchors - Decadence (2017) EN

Angry and raging like three hundred knives project by Norwegian artist Stig Erklev. It's around for two years now but I encountered it just now. And I'm in awe. It's difficult to find a kind of music that fits better some particular states of mind.

I've been listening to "Mediocre at Best" for some weeks now because besides this great energy the Norwegian releases, his compositions have also this difficult to describe melodic and, what is even more important to me, nostalgic nature. For me, Erklev's anger is more this kind of anger that is expressed through tears, the one that is a result of depression, sadness as the last stand of sanity. But maybe it's just me.

The album is well balanced. Apart for "Mediocre..." the other tracks that deserve our attention are an ultra fast "Hook and Sinker", "Sunshine" and surprisingly delicate interlude in "Swallow".

Drifting Anchors - Decadence (2015) PL

Wściekły i zadziorny jak trzysta noży projekt norweskiego artysty Stiga Erkleva. Ma już co prawda dwa lata ale natrafiłem na niego dopiero teraz i jestem urzeczony. Ciężko znaleźć lepszą muzykę dla niektórych stanów umysłu.

Sam zasłuchuję się od kilku tygodni w "Mediocre at Best" bo oprócz niesamowitej energii wyzwalanej przez Norwega, jego kompozycje mają w sobie także trudną do opisania melodyjność oraz, co nie mniej ważne, melancholię. Dla mnie złość Erkleva to bardziej złość przez łzy, taka, która wynika z depresji, ze smutku, niczym ostatni bastion zdrowia. Ale może to tylko ja.

Płyta jest równa. Poza "Mediocre..." na uwagę zaskakują ultra szybki "Hook and Sinker", "Sunshine" i zaskakująco łagodny muzyczny przerywnik - "Swallow".

Seyda Neen - Odwilż (2017) EN

Seyda Neen, actually Artur Kujawa with guests, is an answer to my never asked question - how to combine a romantic lyricist with post-rock/noise dirt. I wish I asked it before by myself but now I can only treat myself by listening to the album.

It's enough to read through the album's description and then to go deeper into the lyrics to be sure how much introvert this music is. The artist creates music in order to "melt down the ice barriers disturbing the correct perception of the reality". What is this correct perception like? Certainly not the one we anticipate.

Seyda Neen combines very dirty guitar sounds with very poetic lyrics that sound like Polish bands such as the early Myslovitz or Hariasen ("Zanurzyć się"), and this is where the very much underlined by Kujawa "inconsistency" comes from. But despite what he says, I see the album a s a whole. And I do love the tracks such as "Piosenka dla mojego psa" (A song for my dog), transforming into screamo "Chrzęsty" (Crunches) or filled with melancholia "Chłodne lato z Aleksandrą" (A chilly summer with Aleksandra).
