Ciśnienie - [angry noises] (2025)

"Note: this album is designed to be played loudly. Listen as loud as you can or as loud as you’re allowed." How many release, regardless of the genre, have to include such a disclaimer? But in the case of the Polish less and less jazzy and more and more noisy Ciśnienie, it's well-justified. One of my favourite Polish bands have just released their new album and it's a chaotic wonder.

I've had numerous occasions to see the band live and I have to say that their philosophy never to release albums created in studios in traditional way, but rather record live performances is what leads the band's career forward. There is so many good things about their music, but the best one is the energy and the creative ways of showing heated emotions that drive the artists. This results in music that is chaotic (in the best way!), noisy (in the best way!) and overwhelming. The complex compositions are filled with parts that prepare you for the sudden burst of sound and create tension, parts that are the sudden bursts of sound and parts that come after the sudden bursts of sound but are somehow even louder and noisier.

This all makes me always mention Ciśnienie when asked about the best Polish post-rock group at the moment. Even though the artists escape easy genre divisions and are difficult to classify. The way (angry and energetic) baritone sax and (angry and energetic) violins lead this music makes it exceptional but it's the overall anger and energy what makes the band so unique. A broader audience in Poland got to know Ciśnienie recently thanks to their performance at OFF Festival, but the band is even better in smaller clubs, so if you have a chance, don't miss it!

Tylko Nieświadomi Przeżyją - Tylko nieświadomi przeżyją (2025)

I'm gonna be honest: despite the fact that the band comes from my city and that I've seen some of those artists performing live in other projects, I got to know about this release in an exceptionally weird way. From my Chinese friend (good sides of globalization here). And it's good that it happened because this new project lies exactly on the border of my comfort zone as their music is as post-rocky as it is jazzy.

The soundscapes on the debut release are vast. The pace is slow and slowly developing. The sights are surreal. This is all thanks to the wide range of instruments appearing on the album, including saxophone, glockenspiel, harp... This chaotic line up makes up a psychedelic yet coherent whole, an orchestration of various sounds that go from impro-like dark jazz passages to louder, post-rock-esque sections and back. The single Nigredo is a perfect example here: slowly rising up to a jazzy but also loud and atmospheric crescendo. The longer tracks are indeed constructed with a similar idea in mind, making me feel like at my post-rock home.

The parts outside of my comfort zone certainly include the omnipresent saxophone (sorry, not my vibe) which, I have to admit, sounds pretty alright. I do also prefer where the music gets louder, more involving and slightly heavier, but there is a lot of space for the lovers of the instrumental ambient and dark jazz, mysterious soundscapes. I hope to see the band live soon, it must be so much fun!

Tylko nieświadomi przeżyją costs 6 EUR (25 PLN).

Niechęć - Reckless Things (2025)

I am a person who famously dislike jazz. Sorry. But when I like an album that is very jazzy, if not jazz full stop, it's a clear indication that the album is really good. It's not Ciśnienie whose post-rock noise is structured like jazz, it's jazz music that feels like post-rock and it's enough for me to get really intrigued by the Polish band's fourth ever album.

The band admit their love for improvisation (is there any jazz outfit who don't like it?) but that their sound changes constantly and "balances between fury and melancholy, recently leaning towards trance rhythms and synths". After the first two tracks I was already sold: Nowe płuca (translating to "New Lungs") present a perfect riff (but played on a trumpet, I think) that makes the track an instant hit while Bezdech ("Apnea")'s finish is... just pure post-rock. Sorry to keep coming back to the comparison with the guitar-based genre, but this is where I feel comfortable in. I'm not trying to offend anyone.

Although it is not a norm for me, I prefer the livelier, more energetic fragments of the album. The more self-reflecting parts played with a saxophone (I think) are definitely not my cup of tea. Still though, I am excited by this album more than I could have guessed.

Reckless Things costs 7 EUR (29 PLN).

Lonker Sea - Hamza (2020) EN

Lonker Sea are already an appreciated brand in Poland and around the world. Their jazzy noise is in many ways unique and borders with various music genres including post-rock and dream pop. It's how it is on this year's heavily written about already album Hamza. But also on this blog, one of the best Polish albums of the year must be present.

Perhaps the biggest surprise here is how big a role is played by Joanna Kucharska's vocals now. It's her, who starts the whole thing in Infinite Garden and makes it with such a class, resulting in something dreamy and dark jazzy. Stil, the tracks I like most are those combining obviously jazzy arrangements with post-rock and noise elements. Those instrumental pieces like Gdynia80 or Open & Close.

But, as I always say, I have absolutely no clue about jazz, so I won't go further into this. I like the Poles' music and this is what counts to me.

Hamza costs 8 EUR.

Lonker Sea - Hamza (2020) PL

Zresztą to właśnie ona otwiera płytę w Infinite Garden i robi to z klasą, co w sumie daje trochę dreampopowy, trochę dark jazzowy utwór.

MRW - Bakemono - Kanashimi no fukkatsu (2019) EN

MRW, or Marcin Rafał Waszczak, comes from the Polish city of Sosnowiec and appears on my Bandcamp radar for quite a long time now. On his numerous albums he offers his own alternative approach to jazz music, but the last EP was more of his post-rock side.

But before talking about music, on his Facebook account, Waszczak shows also his visual art works, thus no wonder that his cover art always strike with coherent and engaging concepts. The new album features Kobayashi Issa's haiku poem: "A world of grief and pain/ Flowers bloom/ Even then" and it's filled with true, guitar post-rock. But still, in those very rock-like compositions the audience can still find this jazzy spirit that fills the Polish artist's soul.

Związki Maillarda make instrumental music that escapes most of the labeling attempts, but if you really want to, you can call it guitar experiments spiced by a "pinch of post-rock and a touch of psychedelia". That's how their debut EP called Cyrk (Circuss) was created and released in December.

This is not the only thing that distinguishes the Poles from other bands, as they state, another thing is "the way of working. Związki Maillarda function on quite loose basis, they make new tracks according to their own needs, play whatever they like at the moment and never know what they will sound like in the end". This improvisation-based approach makes the Wrocław-based band's music sound a lot like jamming jazz that from time to time gets heavier and louder (especially in the brilliant Pangea and sometimes they also use some impressive aspects of electronic music, as those in Praski metronom ("Prague Metronome")). This impression is only deepened by the guest appearance by Jan Szmajda playing a trombone.

The most important thing though is that it definitely shows how much fun the musicians have from creating their music this way. If I deciphered their name correctly, it only proves that as Maillard reactions are responsible for creating the taste of such entertainment meals as chips, beer and chocolate. Important and joyful.

Cyrk costs 5 EUR (20 PLN).

Ważne i dające sporo radości.

Cyrk kosztuje 20 PLN.

Hypnodrone Ensemble - Plays Orchestral Favourites (2018) PL

Ważni są też zaproszeni goście dostarczający wzbogacających całe doświadczenie instrumentów: skrzypiec (wspomniany Goff), gitary barytonowej (Du Champ) i syntezatorów (Diego Ferri).

Hypnodrone Ensemble - Plays Orchestral Favourites (2018) EN

The word Ensemble in the band's name is there absolutely not by mistake, Hypnodrone Ensemble is a real dream team of the independent, very much alternative post-rock and includes Aidan Baker and Eric Quach, better known as thisquietarmy. They are supported among others by Simon Goff (coauthor of Baker's lat year's hit album Noplace) and three (!) drummers. So their new album had to be fantastic.

They describe themselves as "expanded polyrhythmic avant rock collective" and it only increases the hype. Heavy, atmospheric drums providing the form to the jazzing/ambienting noise, this is the album in short. This concert on distortions amazes with quality, performance and soul. From the very beginning you can feel the power of music giants inspiring each other in creating this beauty.

The invited guests are extremely important as well, they provide the instruments that enrich the experience with violins (the already mentioned Goff), baritone guitar (Du Champ) and synths (Diego Ferri). The music sounds best in the longest tracks where there's place for composition's development and this monstrous dose of creativity. Finger-licking good.

Plays Orchestral Favourites costs 5.99 EUR.

Tangled Thoughts of Leaving - No Tether (2018) EN

The Australians from Tangled Thoughts of Leaving are already well known in the world of instrumental post-rock, after their long plays "Deaden The Fields" and "Yield To Despair" helped them establish a significant fandom, they are coming back with more guitar noise in "No Tether".

The highest tier quality of their music is audible from the very beginning. The way their music sounds and how it is written makes a long-lasting impression and forces to listen closely to catch every nuance during this almost-an-hour-long album. And those nuances are everywhere as the level of complexity in the Australians' music is sky-high. It's not only about making loud guitar sounds, the artists use those to show a whole palette of emotions, from anger to awe and back to depression. To do that, they add piano keys but not only. The music complexity makes me think that they sound as if a jazz band decide to try something else and switch genres.

The audience is going to lose their shoes many times. First, when they hit the absolutely epic, but not really that loud "Cavern Ritual". Second time, when from the chaos of "Signal Erosion" suddenly a wall of sound emerges. And finally, during "Binary Collapse" in which this jazz-post-rock masterpiece loudly finishes. Guitar music of the highest quality.

"No Tether" costs 14 AUD.

Tangled Thoughts of Leaving - No Tether (2018) PL

Jakość dźwięku i kompozycji sama w sobie robi wrażenie i każe wsłuchiwać się w każdy niuans w trakcie trwania prawie godzinnej płyty.

"No Tether" kosztuje 39 złotych (14 AUD).
