Show Me a Dinosaur - Plantgazer (2020) EN

For the first time I posted about the Russian band quite a while ago - four years to be specific, when they released their album Show Me a Dinosaur. Now the 4-piece post-metal-blackgaze band from Petersburg showed their fourth album and brought some heavy taste to the last days of this difficult year.

The album makes another release that's a direct response to the lockdown and pandemics situation in the world. And this also explains the mysterious title as according to the musicians, gazing at plants is the only thing people locked inside their houses during quarantine can do even during beautiful, sunny days. This and "trying to figure out answers to the many questions this new world has given rise to". Blackgaze on this album is very guitar-saturated and catchy, in many places more post-rock-like than metal if this can even be so easily said. The band with no problem generates the waves of sounds that sweeps the audience off and carry them to the most energetic worlds (Red River!).

The post-metal here is made mostly of the screaming vocals, but the artists also use more normal, choir-like chanting as in the great Marsh. The most important though is that the band is not about making the music strictly within a genre but they go wherever their heavy and guitar0filled hearts tell them to. I like it very much.

Pierwszy raz o rosyjskim zespole pisałem na blogu już naprawdę dawno, cztery lata temu, gdy wydali krążek Show Me a Dinosaur. Teraz czteroosobowy post-metalowo-blackgaze'owy zespół z Petersburga pokazał swój czwarty album i dodał ciężkiego smaczku ostatnim dniom tego niełatwego roku.

Album to kolejne wydawnictwo będące odpowiedzią na lockdown i pandemię na świecie. Wyjaśnia to również zagadkowy tytuł, według muzyków właśnie obserwowanie roślin to jedyne, co pozostaje ludziom zamkniętym w domach na kwarantannie w piękne, słoneczne dni. To oraz "próba odnalezienia odpowiedzi na wiele pytań, które zadaje ten nowy świat". Blackgaze na płycie jest bardzo gitarowy i przebojowy, w wielu miejscach bardziej post-rockowy niż metalowy jeśli można to tak łatwo określić. Zespół z łatwością generuje fale dźwięków, które zmiatają słuchaczy i niosą w pełne energii rejony świata (Red River!).

Post-metalowe są przede wszystkim krzykliwe wokale, ale artyści czasem posiłkuje się normalnym, chóralnymi wokalami jak w świetnym Marsh. Najważniejsze jest natomiast, że zespół nie trzyma się kurczowo gatunkowych granic, a eksploruje cokolwiek im w ciężkich i gitarowych sercach gra. Bardzo to lubię.

It’s time to travel east. And north. And a little bit south as well. To Russia. And more precisely, to its former capital built by tzar among swamps, just like Dubai is built on a desert because that was a shah’s wish. To the city of palaces, vast and neglected housing areas and one museum with human fetuses drowned in formalin - Petersburg. And our guides are the members of Show Me A Dinosaur who will “flood (with) guitar sounds with hurricane of drums and desperate screams.

The bands floats somewhere on the genre borders - between horrendous black metal and aggressive screams through pitch black shoegaze to delicate guitar twanging. You can both drown in an ocean of sound and shred a tear over crystal bites of strings. SMAD like to play on emotions of very big importance, some would say that they really dig pathos. The introduction to their album is built on the human existence whose bodies, like everything else in the universe, “are made of (stars’) remnants and massive explosions in the galaxies”. But still we “choose to complicate life. We design a life of self-inflicted stress, negativity and broken habits. (...) There are times we wish our life away.” The bombastic style of metal really goes well with shoegaze sounds’ depth.

“We’ll meet where there will be light / covering our eyes we’ll fly high / We’ll meet where there will be light / to fall into ocean, like stone down to the bottom” - words like those never sound so good as accompanied by the wall of guitar sound, expressed as desperate screams.

Czas wybrać się na wschód. I na północ. I trochę też na południe. Do Rosji, a konkretnie do jej byłej stolicy zbudowanej przez cara na bagnach, tak jak Dubaj na pustyni bo zamarzyło się to szachowi. Do miasta pałaców, muzeum z ludzkimi płodami w formalinie i rozległych rozpadających się blokowisk - do Petersburga. A zabierają nas do niego muzycy Show Me A Dinosaur, którzy “zalewają (chętnych) dźwiękami gitar wraz z huraganem perkusji i desperackimi krzykami”.

Zespół pływa gdzieś po granicach gatunków - między horrendalnym black metalem i agresywnymi wrzaskami wokalisty przez czarny jak smoła shoegaze po delikatne pobrzdękiwania na gitarze. Można jednocześnie utonąć w oceanie dźwięku i wzruszyć się kryształowymi szpilkami strun. SMAD lubią grać na największych emocjach, ktoś mógłby rzec, że kręci ich patos i pewnie by się nie pomylił. Wstęp do swojej płyty budują na opisie ludzkiego istnienia we wszechświecie, które, tak jak wszystko wkoło, zawiera w sobie materię najbardziej epickiego zdarzenia w dziejach - wybuchu gwiazd. A mimo to utrudniamy sprawę - “wybieramy komplikowanie sobie życia, żyjemy wśród napięcia, które same sobie narzucamy, negatywizmu i szkodliwych nawyków (...) Są momenty, w których chcielibyśmy pozbyć się naszego życia”. Patos black metalu i głębia shoegaze’owych dźwięków bardzo do siebie tutaj pasują.

“Spotkamy się tam, gdzie będzie światło / zakrywając oczy wzlecimy wysoko / spotkamy się tam, gdzie będzie światło / by upaść do oceanu, jak kamień na dno”. Takie słowa nigdzie nie brzmią tak dobrze jak w towarzystwie ściany gitar, pod postacią desperackich krzyków.
