Drawing Hills - Lueurs (2026)

I can't believe I already posted about the French band of Drawing Hills... almost 10 years ago. This reminds me that very, very soon, this blog will have its very significant birthday. But this can wait as the short EP released in June and filled to the brim with quality post-rock is worth a story of its own.

Since 2017, the band released only 3 EPs so it's not the most fruitful music career I've seen. HOWEVER, for a small and relatively unknown band, the quality of the music they create is staggering. I love when guitar post-rock finds this balance between being catchy and melodic and noisy and overwhelming. And Lueurs showcases just that: the guitars play blissful melodies only to become aggressively loud and math-rock-like random (in my favourite track here, Inferno). This doesn't mean that there is no continuity here as the whole album feels very well-thought-through and coherently atmospheric.

So the EP may be short, but there is A LOT going on from the beginning to the finish. I just wish the Frenchmen won't wait another 4 years with another three tracks. It's time for an LP I think.

A short EP by a French quartet makes a really good prophecy of the future: Drawing Hills with their "Bunch of Bushes" forecast a combination of heavy riffs with moments of peace and it has to be stated that they do it with grace.

It starts with slowly unwinding "Jupiter" that at one moment erupts into a mixture of unrestrained guitar enthusiasm and bass trying to maintain the form of this music. "Mangrove" keeps the noise level of the first track but encapsulates it in more spacious and also melancholic sound. "Birch (Le Désespoir des Singes)" brings the "chorus" that is being screamed out, which adds up to the impetuousness of the whole thing. There's no doubt that more music by Drawing Hills is absolutely needed.

"Bunch of Bushes" can be yours for pay-what-you-want.

Krótka EP-ka francuskiego kwartetu to bardzo dobra wróżba na przyszłość. Drawing Hills na "Bunch of Bushes" zapowiadają połączenie ciężkich riffów z momentami spokoju i trzeba przyznać, że robią to z klasą.

Zaczyna się długo rozwijającym się "Jupiterem", który w pewnym momencie wybucha w mieszankę niepohamowanego gitarowego entuzjazmu i starającego się nadać mu formy basu. "Mangrove" zachowuje cały hałas pierwszego utworu ale zamyka go w bardziej przestrzennym i jednocześnie melancholijnym brzmieniu. "Birch (Le Désespoir des Singes)" wnosi za to wykrzykiwany "refren", co tylko dodaje całości żywiołowości. Nie ma najmniejszych wątpliwości, warto czekać na kolejny materiał Drawing Hills.
