Shentov, Simitchiev, Lukanov - Pain and Power (2024)

Amek Collective always brings to my ears something that is worth mentioning. This time the ambient label from Bulgaria released a joint-effort from three their compatriots: Ivan Shentov (aka Krāllār), Martin Lukanov, and Angel Simitchiev (aka Mytrip).

This is the second collaboration of the gentlemen after the 2022's Palimpsest. Like on that album, Pain and Power offers minimalist but extremely dark ambient sounds that build up the reflective state in one's mind the longer the album plays. This is music that feels like the earth's subtle movements, like the dark caves look, like a persistent call to go back to the simpler times. It should be listened to in complete darkness and then it's felt in your bones.

Merlin Ball - Virus & Virus 2 (2020) PL

Szczęście w nieszczęściu, że aktualna sytuacja epidemiologiczna wpływa pozytywnie na muzyczną wenę wielu artystom. W tym również jak się okazuje projektowi Merlin Ball z kanadyjskiego Vancouver, który wydał już dwie EP-ki poświęcone wirusowi (a następna jest w planach).

Virus i Virus 2 to wydawnictwa trochę lo-fi/DIY, ale nie czuć tego aż tak znowu bardzo. Lirycznie składa się on z eksploracji tematu pandemii i społeczno-ekonomicznych jej następstw. Nie jest to odkrywcze, ale jest wybitnie na czasie. Bardzo podoba mi się wokal - szepcząco-niepokojący, swoim nihilistycznym wydźwiękiem pasujący do tych czasów jak ulał. Nawet jeśli, jak w Everybody staje się nad wyraz melodyjny i tchnący nadzieją.

Muzycznie z kolei EP-ki składają się z ambient-popowych, delikatnie noise'owych i minimalistycznych kompozycji przywodzących na myśl niektóre momenty z dyskografii Spiritualized. Czasem bardziej pulsująco-niepokojących (fantastyczne Isolation), czasem bardziej melodyjnie-przebojowych. Niezwykle solidne wydawnictwa, jedna z lepszych tak bezpośrednio odwołujących się do COVID-19.

Merlin Ball - Virus & Virus 2 (2020) EN

Fortune in disguise of the current epidemic situation is that it positively influences the musical inspiration of many artists. Including, as it seems, the project called Merlin Ball hailing from the Canadian Vancouver, that released already two EPs devoted to the virus (and the next one is being prepared).

Virus and Virus 2 make releases that are a bit lo-fi/DIY, but it's not something that influences the reception. The lyrics explore the topic of the pandemic and its social-economic consequences. Not too unique but truly timely. I really like the vocals - whispering and unnerving, with its nihilist vibes fitting the times perfectly. Even if sometimes, as in Everybody becomes exceptionally melodic and hopeful.

Musically speaking, the EPs consist of ambient pop, delicately noisy and minimalist compositions making me think of some of Spiritualized's discography moments. Sometimes more pulsating and anxious (awesome Isolation), sometimes more catchy and melodic. A really solid release, one of the best so directly referencing COVID-19.

Passepartout Duo - Vis​-​à​-​Vis (2020) PL

Czasami muzyka danego projektu jest tylko trochę bardziej zaskakująca od historii samych artystów. Tak jest w przypadku szwajcarskiego duetu Passepartout Duo, którego muzykę na synthy, dzwonki, instrumenty perkusyjne oraz "przenośny zestaw instrumentów zaprojektowany i skonstruowany przez zespół z drewna i złomu zebranego na ulicach Genewy" można podziwiać na pierwszym LP zatytułowanym Vis​-​à​-​Vis.

Pianistka Nicoletta Favari i perkusista Christopher Salvito nagrali swój materiał w wielu miejscach na trasie Szwajcaria-Chiny, a jako jedną z inspiracji podają właśnie podróże. Nic dziwnego, że w ich muzyce roi się od różnych inspiracji i naleciałości. Bo z jednej strony mamy miejscami bardzo brudny i noise'owy ambient, z drugiej dominują dźwięki dzwonków i brzmiących bardzo orientalnie klawiszy. Nie jest to twój typowy album neoklasyczny, a jednak i do niej sięgają inspiracje.

Płyta to dwa kawałki podzielone dla wygody na sekcje. Oba w tym samym, uwodzącym minimalistycznym tonie. Cały projekt przez wzgląd na swoją oryginalność zasługuje na najwyższą uwagę.

Passepartout Duo - Vis​-​à​-​Vis (2020) EN

Sometimes a project's music is only a bit more interesting than the artists' story. This is the case of the Swiss Passepartout Duo whose music on synths, glockenspiel, percussion instruments and "a portable set of instruments designed and built by the duo out of scrap wood and metal found on the streets of Geneva" can be admired on their first LP called Vis​-​à​-​Vis. 

The pianist  Nicoletta Favari and drummer Christopher Salvito recorded the album in several places on their way from Switzerland to China and the traveling makes one of their musical inspirations. No wonder that there's so much various influences there. Because on one hand there's some very dirty and noisy ambient, on the other, the dominant are glockenspiel sounds and keys sounding somewhat oriental. Its' not your typical neoclassical album but it goes to this genre as well. 

The album consists of two pieces out of convenience divided into more tracks. Both with the same, minimalist and seducing vibes. the whole project due to its uniqueness deserves the highest attention.
