Paul Lopez tworzący jako Sana Obruent pojawia się na moim blogu regularnie, niemniej wciąż nie mogę przejść obok jego nowych prac obojętnie. Tutaj w jednym, potężnie ambientowym i właściwie długim kawałku Paratus Sum. 

Artysta przyzwyczaił już do swojego ciężkiego od nakładających się warstw dźwięków ambientu. Jego muzyka nie tyle sprzyja refleksji co nią atakuje i przygniata, dla mnie bardziej niż relaksacyjne ma właściwości przygnębiająco melancholijne. I taka właśnie powinna być. Nie inaczej jest na tej, opatrzonej fantastycznym cover artem, płycie.

Paul Lopez creating his music as Sana Obruent appears on my blog in regular periods of time, but I still can't be indifferent to his works. Here, in one, massively ambient and accordingly long track called Paratus Sum. 

The artist has accustomed us to his heavy, multi-layered ambient. His music does not only promote self-reflection, it actually attacks with it and forces the audience to follow. For me it has less of relaxation-favouring vibes and more of gloomily melancholic ones. And so it should be. This one, decorated with some fantastic cover art, is no different.

Prime Alone - Monolog (2018) EN

Prime Alone is a solo project by Petr Gidulyanov from Sankt Petersburg, devoted to guitar music and inspired by Kokomo or The Chasing Monster among others. His new album called Monolog is something undoubtedly worth getting familiar with.

The artist wrote the album's music with is mind occupied by "the human as a person and the core of the universe", his meaning for himself and for the infinite universe. But also with Erich Maria Remarque's works. The music here changed a bit comparing to the artist's earlier albums, its sound is now darker, "much more massive and heavier". 

Heavier it really is, Gidulyanov doesn't hesitate from attacking the audience with, sometimes ridiculously loud guitar sounds, the power of which can easily crush the listener. And it does so, with some short breaks, throughout the whole album. It makes it so melancholic in this sad, helplessly aggressive way. Worth it.

Prime Alone - Monolog (2018) PL

Prime Alone to solowy projekt Petra Gidulyanova z Sankt Petersburga poświęcony gitarowemu graniu i inspirowany m.in. Kokomo czy The Chasing Monster. Jego nowa płytka to Monolog i zdecydowanie warto się z nią zapoznać.

Artysta pisał muzykę na płycie z myślą o "człowieku jako osobie i centrum wszechświata", o jego znaczeniu dla samego siebie i dla nieskończonego wszechświata, jak również o prozie Erich Marii Remarque'a. W muzyce na albumie zmieniło się trochę w porównaniu do poprzednich albumów, a brzmienie Prime Alone stało się mroczniejsze, "dużo bardziej masywne i cięższe". 

Jest zdecydowanie ciężko, Gidulyanov nie waha się przed atakowaniem słuchaczy absurdalnie wręcz głośnymi gitarowymi dźwiękami, których moc potrafi wgnieść w ziemię. I robi tak, z przerwami, przez całą długość płyty. Dzięki temu jest ona melancholijna w ten smutny, bezsilnie agresywny sposób. Polecam.

Qualia - Hopeless Optimism (2018) EN

Qualia (the one from Cambridge as there are at least a few projects with similar names) is a solo work by Dan Leader who creates extremely sad and atmospheric music. After the last year's album Cheerful Pessimism, he comes back with the second part in Hopeless Optimism. And it's going to be one of the most important releases of this year.

From the very first moments, Leader's music makes me think of Raised By Swans - similar vocal, similar aesthetics, similar instruments. The artist creates his music so the audience could "dive into the wall of sound created by layers of guitars, ambient landscapes and noise experimentations". But .I should stress it very clearly, Hopeless... is first of all an acoustic album, the leaders here are vocals and guitar sounds, not much more is needed.

Noise here is generated mostly by the furious (in some parts) drums and... trumpets. And they can generate lots of it. Together with those come post-rock guitars making tracks like the very complex The Fool a compositions developing from silent acoustic sounds to sky-scraping post-rock ones. Another great and worth checking song would be We All Know One, but this is already mostly beautiful drones.

"Hopeless Optimism" can be yours for whatever you pay.

Qualia - Hopeless Optimism (2018) PL

Qualia (ta z Cambridge, bo podobnie nazywa się co najmniej kilka innych projektów) to solowe prace Dana Leadera, tworzącego nadzwyczaj smutną i nastrojową muzykę. Po zeszłorocznej płycie Cheerful Pessimism wraca z drugą częścią w Hopeless Optimism. I będzie to dla mnie jedna z najważniejszych pozycji tego roku.

Od pierwszych chwil muzyka Leadera przywodzi mi na myśl Raised By Swans - podobny wokal, podobny klimat, podobne instrumentarium. Artysta tworzy muzykę taką, by słuchacz mógł "dać nura w ścianę dźwięków złożoną z nawarstwiających się gitar, ambientu i noisowych eksperymentów". Trzeba jednak dodać, że Hopeless... to płyta przede wszystkim akustyczna, tutaj pierwsze skrzypce grają wokal i gitara, niewiele więcej trzeba.

Hałas na tej płycie generowany jest przez furiatyczną miejscami perkusję i... instrumenty dęte. Trzeba przyznać, ze potrafią sporo go wygenerować. A oprócz nich są też zupełnie post-rockowe gitary sprawiające, ze takie utwory jak wielowymiarowy The Fool rozwijają się od cichego akustyka po podniebne post-rocki i z powrotem. Innym wartym uwagi kawałkiem jest We All Know One, ale to już głównie post-rockowe drony.

"Hopeless Optimism" może być twoje za ile tylko chcesz.

gabriel / Cederström - Becoming Animal (2018) EN

Gabriel Wheeler, one of my greatest discoveries of the end of 2017, comes back with a new album inspired by French philosophers Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari. As always, the American artist's music is filled with magical atmosphere and lyrics but it can also make you dance a little. Long story short - he didn't get any worse than on the brilliant "To Space, To Heaven". 

As we are accustomed to, Wheeler builds his music on fast, lo-fi background noise. These are foundations of his songs made of fast pace but nostalgic seemingly non-fitting message. But the last thing is not true. When you only hear the artist's neurotic voice singing a fragment of, for example, "OTS 44", you can't not feel something deep in your soul. nie da się nie poczuć czegoś głębokiego. "Who was I this time last year?  (...) Was I happier back then? Maybe I was less anxious, less afraid to go to sleep" is clearly expressed image of depression, every day poignant sadness.

There's no doubt, the source of those feeling is an unhappy relationship. Wheeler comes back to it almost in all the tracks, be it in "Brutalism" ("I hate to admit that I miss you ") or "Hazel" ("We embraced/ And there was love there/ And then I woke up"). Very honest message compiled with lo-fi vibe of the whole album makes it possible to fall into this music without ever coming back.

Gabriel Wheeler, jedno z moich największych odkryć końca ubiegłego roku, powraca z nową, inspirowaną duetem francuskich filozofów Gillesem Deleuze i Féliksem Guattarim, płytą. Amerykański artysta jak zawsze czaruje atmosferą i tekstami, a do tego potrafi porwać melodią, jednym słowem zupełnie nie obniżył lotów od genialnego "To Space, To Heaven". 

Tak jak nas do tego przyzwyczaił, Wheeler bazuje na szybkim, lo-fi'owym noise'ie w tle. To na jego bazie pisze swoje utwory, z szybkim tempem ale nostalgicznymi tekstami, które, wydawałoby się, mogłyby tu nie pasować. A tak nie jest. Jeśli tylko usłyszy się neurotyczny głos Amerykanina i usłyszy fragment chociażby "OTS 44", nie da się nie poczuć czegoś głębokiego. "Kim byłem o tej porze zeszłego roku? (...) Czy byłem szczęśliwszy? Może byłem mniej niespokojny, mniej obawiałem się pójścia spać" to bardzo bezpośrednio pokazana lekka depresja, codzienny przejmujący smutek.

Nie da się ukryć, że za tymi uczuciami stoi nieudany związek, Wheeler powraca do tego co chwilę, czy to w "Brutalism" ("Nie chcę się przyznać, że za tobą tęsknię") czy "Hazel" ("Objęliśmy się, czułem miłość i wtedy się obudziłem"). Bardzo szczery przekaz, połączony z lo-fi'owym vibe'em całości pozwala wczuć się w tą muzykę aż do zatracenia.

Keira Is You - Free Floating Anxiety (2017) EN

When I was young, the Trójka Polish Radio searched for new, Polish bands, in the finale stage I remember keeping my fingers crossed for Hariasen, a band I saw as a Polish reply to Brian Molko's Placebo. I was fascinated by their magic, emotional sound and mystery around them. Hariasen is no more but its frontman, Jakub Radomski, is part of Keira Is You now.

He now writes the lyrics in English but, as expected, they are still full of emotions. Mostly about the one hunting so many of us: anxiety. Both music, blending of raw post-rock with atmospheric dreampop, and Radomski's filled with neurotic sadness voice make it easier to focus on such emotions. Not to mention the acoustic soul of the music that makes the whole thing very much intimate. 

Some of tricks used on the album are absolutely worth being amazed over - like delicate backing vocals in "Free Floating Anxiety", synth backgrounds in one of the best tracks here, "Serotonin Ends" or long composition of "Drifting on the New Sea" that spreads over just like a real sea. It's quite obvious that the Polish from KIY know how to get inside a listener's head and they do not hesitate to use this knowledge. Sad and beautiful.

Keira Is You - Free Floating Anxiety (2017) PL

Gdy byłem młody w radiowej Trójce szukano polskiego alternatywnego odkrycia, w finale zabawy pamiętam ściskanie kciuków za Hariasen, w którym widziałem rodzimą odpowiedź na Placebo Briana Molki - fascynowała mnie ich magia, pełen emocji głos i tajemnica wokół zespołu. Hariasenu już nie ma ale jego lider Jakub Radomski tworzy w Keira Is You.

Teraz teksty pisze po angielsku ale, jak należało się spodziewać, one też aż kipią od emocji. Najwięcej poświęconych jest nękającym tak wielu z nas stanom lękowym. Zarówno muzyka, która jest mieszaniną chropowatego post-rocku z nastrojowym dreampopem jak i przepełniony neurotycznym smutkiem wokal Radomskiego sprzyjają ich roztrząsaniu. Nie bez znaczenia jest też akustyczny sznyt dodający całości intymności.

Kilka chwytów zasługuje na najwyższe uznanie - jak delikatne chórki w utworze tytułowym czy syntezatorowe tła w znakomitym "Serotonin Ends" albo też długa kompozycja "Drifting on the New Sea", ciągnąca się w nieskończoność jak tytułowe morze. Widać, że Polacy z KIY wiedzą jak dostać się do głowy słuchacza i nie wahają się tej wiedzy użyć. Smutnie i pięknie.

Paragraphs - I Went Outside, I Could Hear The Houses Breathing, They Were Alive (2017) EN

Should one recommend a visit in a head of a person suffering from depression? Should one like those visits? When you listen to "I Went Outside..." it seems that the answer is 2 x yes. Paragraphs (not the most famous music project under this name and not even the second one and probably not the third - no wonder this London-based Paragraphs had so much troubles with the Bandcamp account address) tried to describe the sickness, "this album is probably the closest I will come to explaining what it feels like to suffer from depression" writes the artist, he tried and won. Because the album is perfect.

Paragraphs knows no mercy. He doesn't waste his breath for metaphors and blurts out everything as if he was sitting in his psychologist's office. even if sometimes it may get very close to exaggeration (the last track, "Everyone I Love Will Die was perhaps too much). And yet, the lyrics, as for example the one in "I Couldn't Do Anything Quietly" - "I want to talk /But I've got nothing to say/I want to walk/But everywhere looks the same/I want to love/But all I feel is pain/Forever forgotten" sound extremely melodic. So you want to listen, hum and go deeper and deeper inside them. Perhaps it's dangerous.

The whole thing is dressed in neat lo-fi balancing between ambient, dreampop and post-rock so the spectrum is wide and well fitting the topic. And yes, one of few, if not the only one, metaphor is the album's title. And this metaphor is striking.
