Autism - Have You Found Peace? (2019) EN

Autism, at least this Autism, are from Lithuania, and their heavy post-rock a.k.a. post-metal a.k.a. post-hardcore play from seven years (when they released their first EP). This year, they make a statement about the level of their music with Have You Found Peace? where they show how to express a very peculiar story with the usage of music. 

The Lithuanians' album is well-thought through down to the smallest details. It makes a story of a teenager called Nolan who, after an accident, deals with guilt and psychological problems. The boy writes some unsettling letters only to disappear in the end. The album, as the band state, is an "epitome of the band’s use of cinematic storytelling, and is somewhat of a musical Gesamtkunstwerk", a story told mostly with crushingly melancholic and extremely disquieting guitars.

But only with them. An important person of the album is Krzysztof Traczyk, a member of the Warsaw-based band ROSK. Here, he is responsible not only for his expressive vocals, but also for fantastically good at atmosphere creation fragments of spoken storytelling (for example in the mind infecting Tremorous Luminance). And it's not the end of the long list of guests, there's also another musician of ROSK - Mateusz Szymański and artists playing on saxophone and cello that enrich the already complex post-metal passages in Haunting Recollections.

Autism, przynajmniej ten konkretny, jest z Litwy, a swój ciężki post-rock vel post-metal vel post-hardcore gra od siedmiu lat (wtedy wydali pierwszą EP-kę). W tym roku potwierdzają swój poziom na Have You Found Peace?, na którym pokazują jak muzyką oddać pewną nadzwyczaj niepokojącą historię.

Płyta Litwinów jest przemyślana do najmniejszych szczegółów. Układa się ona w historię nastoletniego Nolana, który od czasu wypadku boryka się z wyrzutami sumienia i problemami psychicznymi. Chłopak pisze niepokojące listy, a w końcu znika. Album, jak pisze sam zespół, to "typowy przykład użycia przez niego kinowego storytellingu w pewnym sensie muzyczny Gesamtkunstwerk (synteza sztuk)", historia opowiedziana głównie przytłaczająco melancholijnymi i niezwykle niepokojącymi gitarami.

Ale nie tylko. Ważna postacią na krążku jest Krzysztof Traczyk, na co dzień muzyk warszawskiego ROSK. Tutaj odpowiada nie tylko za ekspresyjne wokale, ale również za budujące kawał klimatu fragmenty mówionego storytellingu (jak te na zapadającym w umysł Tremorous Luminance). To zresztą nie koniec bogatej liści gości, bo wśród nich jest też kolejny muzyk ROSK - Mateusz Szymański, a także muzycy grający na saksofonie i wiolonczeli, które w Haunting Recollections ubogacają jeszcze post-metalowe pasaże z Litwy.

cintaadhesiva - FRONTEIRA PARAISO (2019) EN

Cintaadhesiva is a multimedia project the core of which is to put together poetry, music and visual arts. From the lyrics perspective led by Silvia Penas, from the music one by Jesús Andrés Tejada, the Spanish (Galician) collective does a lot so everybody could appreciate Iberian poetry without the knowledge of the language. Check it out on the January album FRONTEIRA PARAISO.

If anybody's tempted to depict the album to be recited text accompanied by music, the artists had prepared a reply for this: "It is an organic whole where text, music and video are not accompanied, but rather try to merge and confuse". The test doesn't function without the musi and the music without the text. That makes it especially sad that in order to fully appreciate the project's work one would have to speak Galician (even Spanish is not enough). On the other hand though, the poignant voice of Xabi Xil Xardón can be easily treated and appreciated as another kind of instrument.

And there are many of them. Cintaadhesiva inspires awe with the diversity of the music that sounds like one of the best soundtracks to an eerie spectacle. On one hand we have electric guitars, on the other the orchestral section, and they sometimes are more epic and sometimes more swinging (Lume). But always entirely unique.

Cintaadhesiva to multimedialny projekt, który w swojej istocie spaja poezję, muzykę i sztuki wizualne. Jeśli kogoś kusi by użyć przy tym albumie stwierdzenia, że jest to recytowany tekst akompaniowany muzyką, artyści mają na to przygotowaną odpowiedź: "It is an organic whole where text, music and video are not accompanied, but rather try to merge and confuse". Tekst nie istnieje tutaj bez muzyki, a muzyka bez tekstu. Tym bardziej szkoda, że żeby w pełni projekt docenić należałoby mówić po galicyjsku (nawet nie po hiszpańsku). Z drugiej jednak strony, przejmujący głos Xabi Xil Xardón potraktować można jako kolejny, fascynujący instrument.

Tych i tak jest dużo. Cintaadhesiva zachwyca różnorodnością muzyki, która brzmi jak najlepsza ścieżka dźwiękowa do przedziwnego spektaklu. Mamy więc z jednej strony gitary elektryczne, a z drugiej sekcję orkiestralną, niekiedy bardziej epickie, niekiedy zupełnie rozkołysane (Lume). Ale za każdym razem natomiast zupełnie niepowtarzalne.

FRONTEIRA PARAISO jest darmowa.

Black Flak and the Nightmare Fighters - It's Only Permanent (2019) EN

Black Flak and the Nightmare Fighters is "4 guys jamming the night away, making solid music and looking to put on a good show" from Salt Lake City. Their night jamming resulted in some great instrumental music you can check out on their new album It's Only Permanent.

On their second album, the Americans deal with topics close to each of us: the inner struggles of a human being. But they don't like talking about themselves or about their music's sense, they believe in that when you listen to the music close enough, you'll understand everything. The band's instrumental works are based on what's best in post-rock: clear guitars, epic sounding drums and diverse compositions. And, what's extremely important here, on the atmosphere.

It is greatly influenced by the omnipresent, unsettling samples (sounding fantastic especially in F41.0), but still the most important aspect is the ever-changing pace. The band's music can within seconds go from slow depression to crushing tempest (as in the brilliant Clustercuss) or just stay withing the depths of sadness (in You're Gonna Carry That Weight).

Black Flak and the Nightmare Fighters - It's Only Permanent (2019) PL

Black Flak and the Nightmare Fighters to "czterech gości impprowizujących nocami, robiących solidną muzykę i chcących zrobić niezłe show" z amerykańskiego Salt Lake City. Z ich nocnego jamowania powstaje kawał porządnej muzyki instrumentalnej, z którą zapoznać można się na nowej płycie It's Only Permanent.

Na swojej drugiej płycie, Amerykanie wzięli na warsztat tematy bliższe każdemu z nas: wewnętrzne cierpienia istoty ludzkiej. Zresztą nie lubią za dużo rozprawiać ani o sobie ani o treści swojej muzyki, stawiając na podejście, że jeśli słuchacz wsłucha się w ich muzykę, wszystko zrozumie. Instrumentalna twórczość zespołu opiera się na tym, co w post-rocku najlepsze: wyrazistych gitarach, epicko brzmiącej perkusji i zróżnicowanych kompozycjach. Oraz, co niezmiernie tutaj ważne, na atmosferze. 

Dużo dla klimatu robią wszechobecne, niepokojące sample (fantastyczne w F41.0), jednak wciąż najważniejsze jest zmienne tempo. Muzyka zespołu potrafi w przeciągu kilku sekund przejść od powolnej depresji do zwalającej z nóg zawieruchy (jak np w świetnym Clustercuss) albo po prostu utonąć w smutku (You're Gonna Carry That Weight).

Sadness - Rain (2018) EN

Fenomenal atmosphere is the core value of the project creating under a meaningful name Sadness. It's a mysterious one but there's no need to know much when this dense, mesmerizing music is on, just like one from the newest album Rain.

The album is long and filled with the title sadness up to the edges. It's audible in the extremely loud guitar tempests interrupted from time to time by some quiet rain droplets of keys and sleepy atmosphere of a grey morning. The American artist uses both of the modes like a pro and feels great in them. And you can say the same thing about the audience being washed away by those lazy waves of bittersweet feelings.

Sadness - Rain (2018) PL

Fenomenalna atmosfera to właśnie to, czym zachwyca projekt o wiele mówiącej nazwie Sadness. Jest on owiany tajemnicą, ale nie trzeba wiele więcej niż gęsta i wprawiająca w hipnotyczne stany muzyka, taka jak na najnowszym albumie Rain.

Płyta jest długa i po brzegi wypchana tytułowym smutkiem. Przejawia się on w niezwykle głośnych, gitarowych nawałnicach przerywanych od czasu do czasu spokojnym pokapywaniem klawiszy i senną atmosferą szarego poranka. Artysta ze Stanów gra na tych dwóch biegunach uczuć po mistrzowsku, w każdym czuje się znakomicie. To samo można powiedzieć o słuchaczach, którzy zalewani są leniwymi falami słodko-gorzkich uczuć.

Lai delle Nubi - Tuēri (2019) EN

Lai delle Nubi is an Italian collective who play instrumental post-rock. They showed to the world their first album entitled Tuēri in January.

The band's name literally means "the lament of the clouds" and combines the might of a storm with the lyricism of the lament as in poetry genre. You don't have to be a philosopher to guess that the Rome-based artists' music is similar: the epicness and grandeur of the guitar post-rock and elusiveness of the compositions. And this philosophy is absolutely correct. Nothing brings so many emotions in a listener like Oceani e Vulcani, a track built on keys that are abruptly deafened down by powerful guitars and epic drums.

Another worth mentioning aspect is the really well done cover art made by Stefano Mosena.

Lai delle Nubi - Tuēri (2019) PL

Lai delle Nubi to włoski kolektyw grający instrumentalny post-rock. Swoją pierwszą płytę, zatytułowaną Tuēri pokazali światu w styczniu.

Nazwa zespołu oznacza dosłownie "lament chmur", co łączy ze sobą potęgę burzy oraz liryczność lamentu jako gatunku poezji. Nie trzeba filozofa by odgadnąć, że muzyka rzymian jest podobna: epickość i rozmach gitarowego post-rocka połączona z ulotnością kompozycji. I filozofia ta jest bardzo słuszna. Nic tak nie wzbudza podziwu jak zbudowany na klawiszach kawałek Oceani e Vulcani, który nagle zagłuszony jest potężnymi gitarami i epicką perkusją. 

Do tego trzeba jeszcze dodać naprawdę udany cover art autorstwa Stefano Moseny.

Bluereso - Something Worth Mentioning (2019) EN

Bluereson is a solo project by Austin Cruzen from Great Britain. In his works, Cruzen joins electronic ambient with post-rock and neoclassical influences. His new EP, Something Worth Mentioning, comprises of only four tracks, but it's enough to call it one of the best ambients of the beginning of the year.

The ambient atmosphere and the downtempo's rhythm create some soothing and dreamy effect. And if you add to this strings and keys, you can be sure that you deal with music on a really good level. Each track has some unique aspects to it, it's true for the slowly dying composition of More Than a Feeling, trembling strings in Passage, electronically distorted backing vocals in the title Something Worth Mentioning and, probably the album's best, perfectly neoclassical track Enamor. Hard not to get touched.

Bluereso - Something Worth Mentioning (2019) PL

Bluereson to solowy projekt Austina Cruzena z Wielkiej Brytanii. W swojej twórczości Cruzen stawia na elektroniczny ambient z post-rockowymi i neoklasycznymi naleciałościami. Jego nowa EP-ka, Something Worth Mentioning, składa się tylko z czterech kawałków, ale wystarczyły by nazwać ten album jednymi z najlepszych ambientów początku roku.

Ambientowy klimat i rytm muzyki downtempo dają kojący i rozmarzony efekt. Jeśli doda się do tego smyczki i klawisze, można być pewnym, że ma się do czynienia z muzyką na dobrym poziomie. Każdy z kawałków ma w sobie coś wyjątkowego, czy to umierająca powoli kompozycja More Than a Feeling, pląsające smyczki w Passage, elektronicznie zniekształcone chórki w tytułowym Something Worth Mentioning czy w końcu najlepszy na płycie, doskonale neoklasyczny kawałek Enamor. Trudno się przy nim nie wzruszyć.

Astronoid - Astronoid (2019) PL

Astronoid to zespół z Bostonu awangardowe połączenie onirycznego shoegaze'u z metalowym tempem dyktowanym przez nigdy nie zmęczoną perkusję. Piszą na swoim fanpejdżu takie słowa: "Kreacja powinna być momentem samorealizacji. Pełen potencjał i obietnice stają się spełnione, a kolejny krok możliwy". Dla bostończyków takim momentem jest właśnie najnowszy, drugi album Astronoid, na którym zdaje się słychać najdojrzalszą i najlepszą wersję zespołu. 

Ktoś na Bandcampie porównał brzmienie Astronoid do cięższego, bardziej rockowego Mew i niech mnie diabli jeśli nie miał racji (zresztą "mew" to jeden z tagów, którym opisali swój nowy album na Bandcampie). Wokal Bretta Bolanda do złudzenia przypomina brzmienie Jonasa Bjerre, a to nic prostego. O singlowym I Dream in Lines napisali "Zniekształcone gitary wiją się wokół obrzęknięć sprzężeń podczas gdy wokal odbija się emocjonalnym echem będąc hipnotyzującym ciosem" i to tylko podkreśla wrażenie, że Atronoid to tak naprawdę Mew z innego uniwersum, w którym zaczęli grać głośniejszy, wręcz metalowy i bardziej oniryczny shoegaze nie tracąc nic ze swojej przebojowości i umiejętności pisania urokliwych kompozycji. Płyta jest bardzo równa i ciężko wskazać wyróżniające się kawałki, może poza singlem i świetnymi Fault i I Wish I Was There While the Sun Set.

Astronoid - Astronoid (2019) EN

Astronoid is a Bostonu-based avant-garde combination of oneiric shoegaze and metal pace dictated by the never-tired drums. On they fanpage, they mention the following words: "Creation should feel like a moment of self-actualization. Full potential and promise become fulfilled, and the next step can be taken". For the Americans, this moment came with showing to the world their second album Astronoid that bring us the most mature and the best version of the band.

On their Bandcamp page, there is someone's comment comparing Astronoid to a heavier, more rock Mew and I'll be damned if it's not true (also note that "mew" is one of the tags the band used to describe the album). Brett Boland's vocal is almost exactly alike the sound of Jonas Bjerre and it's not an easy thing. About their single, entitled I Dream in Lines, they wrote "Distorted guitars curl around swells of feedback as the vocals echo with emotion during a hypnotic hook" and it only emphasize the impression that Astronoid is really another universe's Mew who started to play almost metal and very much oneiric shoegaze without losing nothing from their catchiness and the ability to write the charming compositions. The album is very well-balanced and it's difficult to point to its best track, although it maybe could be the single or the great Fault and I Wish I Was There While the Sun Set.

Empty Life - Somewhere Far Away (2019) EN

Alexander Nurnberg comes from the distant Siberia and creates his solo project called Empty Life. On his third album, the recorded after a long break Somewhere Far Away, shows his music that on one hand has a lot of black metal aesthetics and on the other, some of experimental vibes.

Lined with epic grandeur black metal that is marked by the extremely fast automatic drums and impressive riffs, it seems to be description of many project with only one person responsible for the whole black metal vibe. On the one hand, Nurnberg delivers all of that, on the other, he gives us some less obvious things too First of all, the vocal is rarely the "normal" metal yelping or even the sweet vocals of hardcore. The artist sings melodically but also not pretentiously as if it was just a mistake that he does that in front of the charging drums.

The instrumental side of the project is as it should be: dense and loud guitars, beautiful synths and never-ending drums rhythm. It all sounds exceptionally good in Nameless Wasteland, my favourite track of the album.

Empty Life - Somewhere Far Away (2019) PL

Alexander Nurnberg pochodzi z dalekiej Syberii i tworzy solowy projekt Empty Life. Na swoim trzecim albumie, nagranym po dłuższej przerwie Somewhere Far Away, pokazuje muzykę, w której z jednej strony dużo z black-metalowej estetyki, a z drugiej, sporo eksperymentu.

Przeszyty epickim rozmachem black metal naznaczony szalenie szybkim automatem perkusyjnym oraz robiącymi wrażenie riffami, podobnie brzmi dużo projektów, w których jedna osoba odpowiada za cały black metalowy sznyt. Z jednej strony wszystko to dostajemy od Nurnberga na nowej płycie, z drugiej, dostrzec można kilka mniej oczywistych rzeczy. Przede wszystkim wokal nie jest niczym przypominającym metalowe skowyty ani nawet słodkie wokale z hardcore'u. Artysta często śpiewa melodyjnie, a jednocześnie nie pretensjonalnie, tak jakby tylko przypadkiem robił to na tle szarżującej perkusji.

Instrumentalna strona projektu jest taka, jaka powinna być: gęste i głośne gitary, piękne syntezatory i niegasnący rytm perkusji. Dobrze wygląda to zwłaszcza w Nameless Wasteland, moim ulubionym kawałku na płycie.

defector - день, когда мы покинули землю (2019) EN

Defector is a Ukrainian collective playing space inspired instrumental post-rock. However, those inspirations go beyond convention and influence the instrumenta music ranging from drones to massive post-metal. 

The band, at least partly, come from Dombas, no wonder there is a lot of war-inspired pictures on the artists' social media accounts. But as far as the themes they touch, there are more universal topics like space (the title "The Day When We Left Earth"), melancholy (лекарство от меланхолии, meaning  "The Cure for Melancholy"), or the inner state of a human being.

But the most important thing is music. Defector create some impressively massive guitar post-rock which in its grandeur and heaviness reminds of the Japanese MONO, which smoothly transforms into droning, filled with unsettling ambient (опустошение) or one supported by some neoclassical elements (снова утонул). A diverse and well-done album.

Defector to ukraiński kolektyw grający inspirowany kosmosem instrumentalny post-rock. Te inspiracje wykraczają jednak daleko poza konwencję i zahaczają o instrumentalne granie od dronów po masywny post-metal.

Zespół, przynajmniej w części pochodzi z Dombasu, nie dziwią więc inspirowane wojną zdjęcia na kontach społecznościowych zespołu. Niemniej w swojej muzyce artyści skupili się na uniwersalnych tematach takich jak kosmos (tytułowe "Dzień w którym opuściliśmy Ziemię"), melancholia (лекарство от меланхолии, czyli "Lekarstwo na melancholię"), czy wewnętrzny stan człowieka. 

Najważniejsza jest jednak muzyka. Defector tworzy nadzwyczaj masywny gitarowy post-rock, który swoim rozmachem i ciężarem przypomina dokonania japońskiego MONO, który gładko przechodzi w dronujący, pełen niepokoju ambient (опустошение) tudzież taki wspomagany elementami neoklasyki (снова утонул). Zróżnicowany i znakomity album.

Imploding Stars - Riverine ao vivo no Porta 253 (2019) EN

Imploding Stars, an instrumental collective from Portugal is under my radar from a long time. Now the band released a live performance recording that includes three tracks from their last album called Riverine. And it's some impressive material.

Based on pulsating bass line, clear drums and moody violins post-rock by Imploding Stars makes a great impression with its phenomenal and gloomy at the same time atmosphere. Three complex compositions have everything I want from atmospheric instrumental music. In Childhood they inspire with the glockenspiel combined with the nervous pace of the drums, Rebirth is a well-written, immersive composition while Senscence makes a symphony of the omnipresent tension.

And, what's crucial when it comes to recordings from live performances, there is no characteristic for those imperfections. And so it became a well written EP.

Imploding Stars, instrumentalny kolektyw z Portugalii mam pod lupą od dłuższego czasu. Teraz zespół wydał zapis występu live, na który składają się trzy utwory z ich ostatniej płyty Riverine. I jest to naprawdę dobry materiał.

Oparty na pulsującym basie, wyrazistej perkusji i nastrojowych smyczkach post-rock Imploding Stars robi wrażenie fenomenalną i ponurą jednocześnie atmosferą. Trzy rozbudowane kompozycje na płycie mają wszystko to, czego wymagam od atmosferycznego instrumentalnego grania. W Childhood zachwycają dzwonki zestawione z nerwowym rytmem perkusji, Rebirth to świetnie napisana, wciągająca kompozycja, a Senscence to symfonia pełna nieustannego napięcia.

No i, co ważne w zapisach koncertów, zupełnie nie słychać żadnych charakterystycznych dla takowych niedoskonałości. Wyszła z tego porządna EP-ka.

With Hidden Noise - Beside the Sea (2019) EN

With Hidden Noise is Charlie Berger (Soft Wounds, Slowly) from Toronto, who creates music from the borders of slowcore, dream pop and post-rock. And he is also brilliant when it comes to song-writing. His works are to be admired on his debut album called Beside the Sea.

On his album, the artist tries "to sonically capture the mood of driving alone, through a snow-covered countryside, late at night" thanks to the use of slow pace and minimal instrumental side. And additionally, he generate huge amounts of atmosphere influenced by the fierce and cold Canadian climate. A lot of those things force me to compare his works with those by Eric Howden of Raised by Swans, which, in my mouth is a great compliment.

Everything in Berger's music fulfills his assumptions. The slow pace, warm vocal and even warmer backing vocals. This is the music of night and of this combination of sadness and content.

With Hidden Noise to Charlie Berger (Soft Wounds, Slowly) z Toronto tworzący muzykę z pogranicza slowcore'u, dream popu i post-rocka. A do tego jest znakomity jeśli chodzi o pisanie utworów. Jego twórczość można podziwiać na debiutanckiej płycie Beside the Sea.

Na swojej płycie artysta próbuje "dźwiękowo uchwycić nastrój samotnej jazdy samochodem przez pokrytą śniegiem prowincję, późno w nocy" dzięki stosowaniu powolnego tempa i instrumentalnego minimalizmu. Do tego generuje olbrzymie pokłady atmosfery, na które wpływa inspiracja surowym i zimnym kanadyjskim klimatem. Wiele z tych rzeczy przypomina mi dokonania Erika Howdena z Raised by Swans, co jest w moich ustach  olbrzymim komplementem.

Wszystko w muzyce Bergera spełnia założenia muzyka. Niespieszne tempo, ciepły głos i jeszcze cieplejsze chórki, nienachalne instrumentarium. To muzyka nocy i tej mieszaniny smutku i ukontentowania.

Pavo Pavo - Mystery Hour (2019) EN

Pavo Pavo, the project by Oliver Hill and Eliza Bagg, makes a psychedelic indie pop with some serious Flaming Lips vibes, that is fueled by the stormy relationship between the two artists. Their second album, Mystery Hour, is going to be one of candidates for the best album of the year in many rankings.

They call their music "a fever dream filled with cinematic imagery and rooted in acute emotion". There's no shortage of those emotions indeed, as the album is reportedly written under the influence of Hill and Bagg's long-term relationship's break up. It's audible in many places, there is the "mon cheri" phrase reappearing from time to time, in the intelligent lyrics (Close To Your Ego) and the dialogic vocal between Her and Him, all of those give us the unique opportunity to look into the protagonists' emotional life.

However, there wouldn't be any of Pavo Pavo's music if it wasn't for their ability to write extremely catchy songs. Some of them really sound as if it was something so natural that it almost wasn't a big deal (Mon Cheri, Check the Weather, The Other Half). But they are best in towards the finish, in my favourite Statue Is A Man Inside in which the band go beyond more and more psychedelic barriers and make music almost like Tame Impala would if the Australians left their heavy guitar sounds behind and turned to some charming pop.

Pavo Pavo - Mystery Hour (2019) PL

Pavo Pavo, czyli projekt Olivera Hilla i Elizy Bagg to napędzany dynamicznym związkiem tych dwoje psychodeliczny indie pop spod znaku Flaming Lips. Ich druga płyta, Mystery Hour, będzie jednym z kandydatów do krążka roku w różnych podsumowaniach.

Ich muzyka nazwana jest "gorączkowym majakiem wypełnionym kinową wyobraźnią i zakorzenionym w przejmujących emocjach". Tych emocji nie brakowało, gdyż płyta napisana jest pod wpływem rozpadu długoletniego związku Hilla i Bagg. Słychać to w utworach poświęconych naturalnie miłości i tym, co się z nią przez lata dzieje. Ta intymność, w wielu miejscach pojawia się choćby zwrot "mon cheri", a inteligentne teksty (Close To Your Ego) i dialogiczny wokal między Nią a Nim daje nam możliwość wglądu w emocjonalne życie bohaterów.

Nie byłoby jednak muzyki Pavo Pavo gdyby nie umiejętność pisania wciągających i wpadających kawałków. Niektóre z nich brzmią tak, jakby nie byłaby to żadna sztuka i muzykom przychodziło naturalnie (Mon Cheri, Check the Weather, The Other Half). Ale najlepiej brzmią pod koniec albumu, w moim ulubionym Statue Is A Man Inside, w którym przekraczają kolejne granice psychodelii, grając niemal jak Tame Impala, gdyby Australijczycy porzucili ciężkie gitary na rzecz urokliwego popu.

We Are Impala - Visions (2019) EN

We Are Impala, although he name and the psychedelic colours may suggest otherwise, is not a side project by Tame Impala. It is a Spanish post-rock band who released their third album this January. You can safely say that Visions elevates them to the higher tears of the European post-rock artists league.

In We Are Impala's music you can hear balance between very rock music riffs and post-rock aesthetics. The album is not particularly gloomy/depressive, more like, as suggested by the cover art, it inspires awe with its music diversity and psychedelia. Still, unlikely other similar projects, the Spanish were able to create coherent atmosphere that rules the audience from the album's beginning to its end.

It's well-heard in Alpha Centauri. This track is a place where the musicians combined meaty rock riffs with very aesthetically pleasing keys. The combination may sound risky, but the Spanish made it work like this rocket going straight towards distant stars. The band rarely slow down, but when they do, like in Psychotrii, you can safely bet that they do so only to make the following track sound even more dynamic and poignant.

We Are Impala to wcale nie jest, mimo nazwy i psychodelicznej kolorystyki, poboczny projekt muzyków z Tame Impala, to hiszpańscy post-rockowcy, którzy wydali w styczniu swój trzeci album. Można śmiało powiedzieć, że Visions windują ich wysoko w stawce europejskich zespołów post-rockowych.

W muzyce We Are Impala słychać mniej więcej po równo rockowych riffów i post-rockowej estetyki. Album nie jest specjalnie ponuro-depresyjny, raczej, tak jak sugeruje cover art, zachwyca zróżnicowaniem i psychodelią. Niemniej, w przeciwieństwie do wielu podobnych projektów, Hiszpanom udaje się stworzyć koherentną atmosferę panującą nad publicznością przez całą długość albumu.

Dobrze słychać to w Alpha Centauri. W utworze tym muzycy łączą niezwykle mięsiste rockowe riffy z bardzo eterycznymi klawiszami. Połączenie wydawałoby się karkołomne, u Hiszpanów działa jak rakieta zmierzająca w dalekie gwiazdy. Zespół rzadko się zatrzymuje, gdy to robi, jak w Psychotrii, można być pewnym, że robi to tylko po to by następny utwór zabrzmiał jeszcze dynamiczniej i dobitniej.

des Astres - Traxx (2019) EN

Des Astres are a young French band who play some exceptionally atmospheric post-rock. They show it in the short EP released mid January, called Traxx.

If someone likes epic instrumental music with clear love for dense and dark ambiance, des Astres deliver something for them. The band's keen on playing loud, guitar compositions that have so much imaginativeness and grandeur in them that they give the audience the shivers. It is especially true for the EP-closing Osumi whose first part functions as tense-and-sadness-filled introduction that develops into loud, breathtaking finish. Worth recommending.

Des Astres to młody francuski zespół grający kawał naprawdę atmosferycznego post-rocka. Pokazuje to krótka EP-ka wydana w połowie stycznia, zatytułowana Traxx.

Jeśli ktoś lubi epickie instrumentalne granie z wyraźnym zamiłowaniem do gęstej i mrocznej atmosfery to des Astres tworzą muzykę właśnie dla niego. Zespół ma skłonności do grania głośnych, gitarowych kompozycji, które mają w sobie tyle polotu i rozmachu, że powodują u słuchaczy ciarki na grzbiecie. Zwłaszcza jeśli chodzi o zamykający EP-kę Osumi, którego pierwsza połowa to pełen napięcia i smutku wstęp zamieniający się w końcu w głośny, zapierający dech w piersiach finał. Godne polecenia.
