Günter "Dopo" Schabowski to szalenie ciekawa postać - enerdowski urzędnik, którego przejęzyczenie w oficjalnym komunikacie miało przyspieszyć upadek muru berlińskiego, warto przeczytać jego historię na Wikipedii. Dopo Schabowski to również włoski zespół post-rockowy, którego nazwa oddaje hołd "anonimowemu urzędnikowi, który przypadkiem zmienił świat". Włosi wydali właśnie świetną debiutancką EP-kę.

Swoje eksperymentalne podejście do post-rocka zespół pokazuje nie tylko przez użycie interesujących sampli w swojej muzyce ale również, a może przede wszystkim, wokalem. W "Così siamo" balansuje on między deklamowaniem poezji a śpiewaniem w sposób, który przywołuje na myśl bardziej śródziemnomorski pop niż głęboką alternatywę. Nic więc dziwnego, że wśród swoich zainteresowań wymieniają między innymi... barok. 

Jeszcze bardziej psychodelicznie w mroczniejszym tego słowa znaczeniu, robi się w "Gli orologi la notte", gdzie szeptana poezja jest tym razem akompaniowana przez dronujące dźwięki gitar i klawisze śliczne jak sople lodu na słońcu. Całość wieńczy bardziej tradycyjna post-rockowa kompozycja poświęcona, jeszcze raz, Schabowskiemu i udekorowana oryginalnymi samplami z epoki.

Dopo Schabowski - Dopo Schabowski (2018) EN

Günter "Dopo" Schabowski is one extremely intriguing historic figure - a DDR officer whose slip of the tongue in an official message apparently fastened up the fall of the Berlin Wall. This history is worth reading, you can find it on Wikipedia. Dopo Schabowski is also an Italian post-rock band whose name is a tribute to this anonymous clerk who changed the world by mistake". The Italians have released their debut EP recently.

Their experimental approach to post-rock the band shows not only by using interesting samples in their music but also, or perhaps first of all, by the vocals. In "Così siamo" it's somewhere in between poetry recitation and singing in the way that resembles more the Mediterranean pop music than the off-stream. No wonder the musicians among their interests enlist also... baroque.

Even more psychedelic, in the word's darker meaning, gets in "Gli orologi la notte" in which whispered poetry is accompanied by droning guitar sounds and keys beautiful as icicles in the sun. The whole album is finished with the most traditionally post-rock composition devoted, once again, to Schabowski and crowned with original, historic samples.

A Burial At Sea - .​.​.​And the Sum of Its Parts (2018) EN

The English A Burial At Sea consists of five musicians deeply into heavy sounds from bands like And So I Watch You From Afar, Explosions in the Sky or Clever Girl. No wonder on their new EP, they show how loud, guitar music should look.

And it's not exactly what we picture when we think about post-rock. Firstly, since the very beginning we are attacked by rough guitar riffs sounding more like some psychedelic works by, let's say, Thee Oh Seas. The track that opens the album, "A Song for John Willing", does eventually get heavier with sounds that aim to smash the audience as is true for the next song "Scrios an Caine" ending with an extremely chaotic noise finish. If you have not enough of psychedelia, you can always drown into the torrent of trumpets in the final "Lest We Remember".

One more curious thing is the cover art that somewhat parodies the post-rock bands' favourite way of geometrically deforming beautiful landscapes pictures by adapting it to the industrial atmosphere of their city - Liverpool.

Angielskie A Burial At Sea to piątka muzyków zasłuchanych w ciężkie brzmienia zespołów takich jak And So I Watch You From Afar, Explosions in the Sky czy Clever Girl. Nic dziwnego, że na swojej EP-ce pokazują jak według nich powinno wyglądać głośne, gitarowe granie.

A jest ono nie do końca takie, jakie na ogół kojarzy się z post-rockiem. Przede wszystkim od samego początku atakowani jesteśmy zadziornymi gitarowymi riffami przypominającymi raczej psychodeliczne dokonania zespołów pokroju Thee Oh Seas. Dopiero z czasem otwierający płytkę "A Song for John Willing" wprowadza cięższe brzmienia mające na celu przygnieść słuchaczy. Podobnie jest z kolejnym utworem, zakończonym chaotycznym hałasem "Scrios an Caine". Jeśli komuś mało psychodelii, niech tylko zasłucha się w sekcji dętej towarzyszącej zamykającemu płytę "Lest We Remember".

Bardzo ciekawy jest też cover art, który trochę parodiuje ulubioną przez post-rockowe zespoły kompozycję z geometrycznie zdeformowanym krajobrazem przez wpisanie jej w industrialne klimaty ich rodzinnego Liverpoolu.

Ghost Lights - Les Cendres (2018) EN

Next to nothing is known about Ghost Lights. The project is based in France, they have a great cover art (by the Svelt Studio) and play post-rock with their own, unique approach. And they have just released their debut to say hi to the whole world with.

The characteristic trait of Ghost Lights' music is how eager they are to combine heavy guitar sounds with very electronic keys as proved to be successful by the likes of Nordic Giants. The keys sound brilliant while being accompanied by heavy sometimes very heavy guitars and tumultuous drums. And when the project wants to go towards more peaceful, atmospheric music, the backgrounds are occupied by synth soundscapes with guitars dancing in front of them. This is what the first part of "Les Cendres" looks like, although it does transform into a rapture and chaotic guitar/drums noise.

The short album is definitely one of the best post-rock releases this year. The thing that catches attention is the unique way of composing instrumental tracks, the ever-changing pace and, first and foremost, the keys. Waiting for more!

Ghost Lights - Les Cendres (2018) PL

Bardzo niewiele wiadomo o Ghost Lights. Projekt wywodzi się z Francji, posiada świetny cover art (ze studia Svelt) i gra post-rocka, na który ma swój własny, udany pomysł. No i wydał właśnie debiutancki album, którym przestawił się światu.

Charakterystyczną cechą muzyki Ghost Lights jest chętne łączenie ciężkich gitarowych dźwięków z bardzo elektronicznymi klawiszami rodem z twórczości Nordic Giants. Grają one świetnie w akompaniamencie ostrych, miejscami bardzo ostrych gitar i perkusyjnej wrzawy. Jeśli natomiast zespół chce pokazać spokojniejszą, nastrojową muzykę, wtedy w tle rozbrzmiewa synthowy pejzaż, na tle którego swoja pląsy prezentują gitary. Tak jest w pierwszej części "Les Cendres", który jednak przeistacza się w końcu w gwałtowny i chaotyczny gitarowo-perkusyjny hałas.

Niedługa płyta jest naprawdę jednym z lepszych tegorocznych post-rockowych wydawnictw. Z pewnością zwraca uwagę oryginalne podejście do pisania instrumentalnych kompozycji, efektowne mieszanie tempa i, przede wszystkim, klawisze. Już czekam na więcej!

Tony Anderson - Finding Your Heart

The single from an announced album called "CHASM" (out in August) by the American artist from Kentucky. Anderson's music makes a cinematic electronics sounding as if post-rock was played with samples and keys. Three version of the track (a shorter and a piano only ones as bonus) cost 2 USD.

A Cerulean State - I thought you would give me a place (2018) EN

A Cerulean State is a "lazy Lazy Swedish guy making music for imaginary movies." And just as he promises the music on his new album sounds like a filled with delicate beauty soundtrack for a Scandinavian movie. "I thought you would give me a place" is released by AMG Records.

The album is reigned by classical instruments, pure piano keys helped by violins in the album's climax moments. This combination makes a great impression throughout the whole album, but especially in those moments when it is supported by a tearful ambient in the background ("Unchanged Forever" or "Snöfall"). In his music, the artist tells a piercing story just like the best movie dramas would, you just have to listen closely to the precisely composed sounds and read through the track titles.

A Cerulean State to "leniwy Szwed robiący muzykę do nieistniejących filmów". I tak jak obiecuje, muzyka na jego nowej płycie brzmi jak pełny delikatnej urody soundtrack do skandynawskiego filmu. "I thought you would give me a place" wydane jest przez AMG Records.

Na płycie królują instrumenty klasyczne, naturalnie brzmiące klawisze pianina w szczytowych momentach utworów wspomagane przez skrzypce. Ta kombinacja robi wrażenie na całej długości płyty, a zwłaszcza w momentach, w których łączy się ze łzawym ambientem w tle ("Unchanged Forever" czy "Snöfall"). Artysta w swojej muzyce opowiada przejmującą historię niczym najlepszy dramat, wystarczy wsłuchać się w precyzyjnie nakreślone dźwięki i poczytać tytuły utworów.

REW<< - On the Horns of Our Spheres (2018) EN

REW<< or Ryan E. Weber is an Merican artist with a particularly interesting background, he performed among others as Eric & Magill, cooperated with musician of bands like Shearwater or Volcano Choir, lived in Kenya and Armenia. No wonder his hew album is full of surprises too.

"On the Horns of Our Spheres" baffles the audience from the very beginning of "Dominant Species" with the artist's vocal being accompanied by lavish orchestral sounds and marching drums. This theme - combination of really delicate singing with energetic orchestra is repeated in the next track ("Adrift on the Sea of the Blind"). But it is contrasted with absolutely atmospheric ballads such as the brilliant "Our Houses, Built on Sand" for starters. This is a song where Weber is assisted only by the piano keys and it is enough to amaze the audience (what happens once again in "On The River Suam").

There is more surprises, the oriental "The Seven Islands...", Far-East ballad "Kitum Cave" or a dream pop gem in "Stuck at the Gate". The whole thing makes the listeners discover Weber's album like a pretty, atmosphere-fueled adventure with each time they listen to it.

REW<< czyli Ryan E. Weber to amerykański artysta z bardzo ciekawą historią, grający jako między innymi Eric & Magill, współpracujący z muzykami takich zespołów jak Shearwater czy Volcano Choir, mieszkający w Kenii i Armenii. Nic dziwnego, że jego nowy album jest tak pełen niespodzianek.

"On the Horns of Our Spheres" zaskakuje od pierwszych chwil "Dominant Species", gdzie wokal artysty akompaniowany jest przez orkiestralne, rozbuchane dźwięki i marszową perkusję. Motyw ten - zestawienie naprawdę delikatnego wokalu i kipiącej energią orkiestry powtarza się w kolejnym utworze ("Adrift on the Sea of the Blind"). Kontrastuje też jednak z absolutnie klimatycznymi balladami z genialnym "Our Houses, Built on Sand" na czele. W tym utworze Weberowi towarzyszą tylko klawisze pianina i to wystarczy by zauroczyć publikę (podobnie zresztą jak w "On The River Suam").

Zaskoczeń jest więcej, orientalny "The Seven Islands...", dalekowschodnia ballada "Kitum Cave" czy dreampopowy diamencik "Stuck at the Gate". To wszystko sprawia, że płytę Webera odkrywa się jak urokliwą i pełną atmosfery przygodę z każdym kolejnym odsłuchem.

Overmorrow - A long way 'till accordance (2018) EN

Hungarian post-rock from Pecs, Overmorrow is another instrumental debut in last weeks. And although "A long way 'till accordance" makes a short album, it is absolutely clear that it also shows the artists' promising potential.

Three tracks filled with energetic guitar music u to the top, the music you know you want to move to and you start looking for someone to pogo with. The music balances between lightly dancing guitars (especially in "Third Eye Focus") and walls of unstoppable sound in "Lately, I...".

The short EP should be treated a s a demonstration of the band's abilities and those are undoubted. We need more from the Hungarian artists.

Overmorrow - A long way 'till accordance (2018) PL

Węgierski post-rock z Pecsa, Overmorrow to kolejny gitarowo-instrumentalny debiut ostatnich tygodni. I mimo, że "A long way 'till accordance" to płyta krótka, wyraźnie czuć jak dużo potencjału jest w artystach. 

Trzy kawałki wypełnione są po brzegi energetycznym gitarowym graniem, takim, przy którym wiesz, że chcesz się pokręcić a i szukasz w pobliżu kogoś do pogo. Muzyka balansuje między pląsającymi gitarami (zwłaszcza w "Third Eye Focus" a ścianami  nieugłaskanego dźwięku w "Lately, I...".

EPeczkę potraktować można chyba jako prezentację możliwości zespołu, a te są niezaprzeczalne. Trzeba czekać na więcej materiału od bratanków.

Godaughter - Godaughter (2018) EN

Godaughter, post-rockers from the English city of Canterbury, who, in their not-so-soft music, deal with "Communicating without words to mass languages", have released new album. Their mostly instrumental music on "Godaughter" (apparently their communication WITH words is limited to one word only) makes a combination of post-rock and the energy of the punk/screamo genres

The album is opened by a long, slowly developing track, this relatively peaceful post-rock in "Yellow Winter" evolves ultimately into energetically loud finale in which you can even find some of the screaming vocals. Next songs offer their best at once - "Levels" its almost doom metal riffs, "Sandman" post-rock variety and "Dume" a lot of metal-like space.

The Kitchener -Sparks-Mcvey trio have created some good instrumental music that is best served very loud.

Godaughter - Godaughter (2018) PL

Godaughter, postrockersi z angielskiego Canterbury zajmujący się w swojej nielekkiej muzyce "komunikowaniem się bez słów z językami mas" wydali nową płytkę. Ich instrumentalna głównie muzyka na "Godaughter" (najwyraźniej komunikacja słowna ogranicza się w ich przypadku do jednego słowa) to wypadkowa post-rocka i punkowo-screamo energii.

Płyta otwiera się długim, powoli rozwijającym się utworem. Stosunkowo spokojny post-rock w "Yellow Winter" ewoluuje w końcu w energetycznie głośny post-metalowy finał, w którym brzmi nawet trochę wrzaskliwego wokalu. Następne kawałki od razu oferują to, co mają w zanadrzu najgłośniejszego - "Levels" prawie doom metalowe riffy, "Sandman" post-rockowe zróżnicowanie, a "Dume" sporo metalowej przestrzeni.

Trio Kitchener -Sparks-Mcvey stworzyło kawał dobrego instrumentalnego grania, polecane podawać na bardzo głośno.

Live For You - Valentine (2018) EN

Dreampop-esque new wave attacking from the very beginning with its unique atmosphere, this is the new project by Caitlin Rae from  California, Live For You. The American's debut album, "Valentine",  makes her difficult to google without finding a lot about certain Welsh but it is also filled with brilliant music, although it's not very long.

Already the first notes of "Temper Temper" announce an uncompromising approach to cold wave as the artist's emotionless vocal (and also perfectly wave image of the project) is purposely collided with aggressively synthpop sounds. Another, more dream pop face of the project is shown not earlier than in the album's second track, "Poison-Darling". But still, the clear bass line and synth spaciousness give away the obvious lov for the 80s.

Gradually more dream-pop-esque is "Still Love You", especially because of the delicately catchy chorus that makes the track difficult to get out of your head, similarly to "Bright As Blood" which, despite te dark, gothic title, covers the audience with a warm, airy blanket of shoegaze. The album is a collision of many alternative genres and this is probably why it caught my attention so well.

Live For You - Valentine (2018) PL

Dreampopowy new wave atakujący od samego początku swoją atmosferą, oto projekt Caitlin Rae z Kalifornii, Live For You. Debiutancka płyta Amerykanki, "Valentine", sprawia, że trudno ją wyguglować nie trafiając na pewnych Walijczyków, ale też zachwyca muzyką, mimo że jest króciutka.

Już pierwsze dźwięki "Temper Temper" zwiastują bezkompromisowe podejście do zimnej fali, oto wyprany z emocji wokal artystki (a także doskonale wave'owa stylistyka projektu) zderza się z agresywnymi synthowymi dźwiękami. Dopiero drugi utwór płyty, "Poison-Darling", pokazuje inne, bardziej dreampopowe oblicze wokalistki. Mimo to, wyraźna linia basu i synthowa przestrzeń zdradza wyraźne zamiłowanie latami 80.

Gradualnie bardziej dreampopowo jest w "Still Love You", głównie dzięki delikatnie przebojowemu refrenowi, który jak nic innego wpada w ucho, podobnie jak "Bright As Blood", który wbrew mroczno-gotyckiemu tytułowi obejmuje słuchaczy ciepłą, eteryczną kołderką bliską shoegaze'owi. Na płycie zderza się wiele gatunków, pewnie dlatego tak mocno przyciąga uwagę.

Cold, Cold Heart - Arch (2018) EN

"The most important instrument [on the album] is the listener’s imagination" this sentence alone made me want to listen to the new album released by Fluttery Records. The London-based Cold, Cold Heart seem not to have hurried up with creating the new material but when they finally did, it's worth waiting for.

The EP entitled "Arch" is a true piece of neoclassical beauty. Another quote from the publishers' website: "the integration of a string quartet and modular synthesizers have bolstered the grandeur, leaving the listener captivated by their sonic exposition.". Seems a bit over-the-top but the true meaning is simple, the neoclassical music by the trio turning slowly with the album's progression into atmospheric, slow post-rock, makes everyone who listens to it can't shake off the feeling of awe and being flooded with emotions.

Cold, cold heart absolutely doesn't refer to any of the band members.

Cold, Cold Heart - Arch (2018) PL

"Najważniejszym instrumentem [na nowej płycie zespołu] jest wyobraźnia słuchacza", już samo to jedno zdanie zachęciło mnie do nowej płyty ze stajni Fluttery Records. Londyńskie Cold, Cold Heart zdaje się nie spieszyli się z wydaniem nowego materiału, ale gdy już to zrobili to robi on wrażenie.

EP-ka "Arch" to kawał neoklasycznego piękna. Jeszcze jeden cytat ze strony wytwórni: "dzięki wprowadzeniu kwartetu smyczkowego i modularnych syntezatorów, muzyka zwiększyła swój rozmach, pozostawiając słuchacza zauroczonego jej dźwiękową ekspozycją". Wytwornie powiedziane ale istota jest prosta i piękna, neoklasyczna muzyka tria przechodząca z biegiem płyty w nastrojowy, powolny post-rock, sprawia, że każdy słuchający nie może otrząsnąć się z wrażenia i nadmiaru emocji.

Zimne, zimne serce to z pewnością nie o żadnym z muzyków projektu.

KAMNI - Отражение / Reflection (2018) EN

KAMNI are from Moscow and play together for eight years already. Their post-punk-esque shoegaze has just found a new package in the form of the album called "Reflections" (or "Отражение" in Russian) and is everything it should be - shoegazingly loud and new-wavingly cold and catchy.

The album begins for good in "Inside" with its dark, cold wave vocal and clear bass line and with the extremely catchy "Spies" with more rock-like way of singing. This shifting nature of vocals is something most intriguing on the album as already the next track, "Reflection", makes a clear shoegaze vocal with backing voices, contrasting with the hard guitar riff.

It gets really post-rock-like during the brilliant guitar-oriented finish of "On the God's Hands",  but the real climax would be the album's closing in "I See You Through" that doesn't want to end with its range of psychedelic raptures. The Russians managed to turn this mixture of genres into a really well-done and heavily engaging piece of work.

KAMNI - Отражение / Reflection (2018) PL

KAMNI pochodzą z Moskwy i grają już od ośmiu lat. Ich zimnofalowy shoegaze znalazł właśnie nowe opakowanie w postaci płyty "Reflections" (albo po rosyjsku "Отражение") i jest dokładnie taki, jaki powinien - poshoegaze'owemu głośny i po new-wave'owemu wpadający w ucho. 

Płyta zaczyna się na dobre w "Inside" z bardzo mrocznie zimnofalowy wokalem i wyraźną linią basu i ekstremalnie wpadającym w ucho "Spies" z bardziej rockowym wokalem. Właśnie zmieniająca się natura tego ostatniego to najciekawsza sprawa na płycie bo już następny utwór "Reflection" to wyraźnie shoegaze'owy, wspomagany chórkami wokal kontrastujący z twardym gitarowym riffem.

Bardziej post-rockowo robi się w znakomitej, gitarowej końcówce "On the God's Hands", prawdziwym zwieńczeniem jest jednak zamykający płytę pełny psychodelicznych uniesień i ciągnący się w nieskończoność "I See You Through". Z połączenia różnych gitarowych gatunków, Rosjanie potrafili stworzyć naprawdę dobre, wciągające dzieło.

Cloud Anthems - Areté EP (2018) EN

Cloud Anthems is a group made of musicians from the Danish Sky Architects and Chilean Baikonur, making a mixture of Scandinavian doom pop and south-american post-rock. Their EP shows how good a mixture it is.

The album's title is a Greek word meaning one of the five base notions of the ancient Greek ethics and is translated to "virtue". The influence of this culture is visible in track titles throughout the whole album with references to gods or philosophers. The real virtue here, however, is great music. Guitar music seamlessly transforms from atmospheric moments to those where the artists shift to a higher gear. And higher and higher. Already "Telos" shows us the grandeur the band want to play with and how energetic their music is.

The project doesn't use brakes even in "Eros", dedicated to the god of love, and absolutely not in "Areté" in which we can at last hear super heavy, soul crushing doom metal guitars. Everything in its right place, tailored to inspire awe and finished with a climatic outro in "The Death of Socrates".

Cloud Anthems to połączone siły duńskiego Sky Architects i chilijskiego Baikonur, skandynawskiego doom popu i południowoamerykańskiego post-rocku, ich EP-ka "Areté" pokazuje jak dobre jest to połączenie stylów.

Tytuł płytki to greckie słowo oznaczające jedno z pięciu podstawowych pojęć etycznych starożytnej Grecji tłumaczące się jako "cnota". Inspiracja tą cywilizacją widoczna jest przez całą płytę z odwołaniami do bóstw czy filozofów. Prawdziwą cnotą jest tu jednak znakomita muzyka. Gitarowe granie płynnie przechodzi między momentami nastrojowymi a takimi, w których należy wrzucić wyższy bieg. I jeszcze wyższy. Już w "Telos" słyszymy jak szybko i z jakim rozmachem chcą grać muzycy i jak bardzo energetyczna jest to muzyka.

Projekt nie hamuje nawet w poświęconym bogowi miłości "Erosie", a z pewnością nie w tytułowym "Areté", w którym słyszymy w końcu również mocne, przygniatające doom metalowe gitary. Wszystko jest na swoim miejscu, skrojone by zachwycać i zakończone klimatycznym outrem w "The Death of Socrates".

The Smilies - How Soon is Love? (2018) EN

The Smilies come from the sunny California, they have a funny name and play music that may be called an entertaining shoegaze. On their short debut album, they show how to play in both catchy and noisy way.

They dedicate the album to such bands as Lush, Spacemen 3 or Astrobrite and it's very clear why. The Smilies' music is filled with traces of the classic shoegaze, mostly because of the really loud and quite raw guitar sounds. But, there's always a lot from brilliant works of Jason Pierce or Primal Scream - especially in the way they make use of random samples (and it's no wonder, that one of the music fragments appearing right before the great "In My Head" is "Loaded" by Primal Scream themselves).

Another quoted song is "Love Sensation" by Loleatta Holloway and it kind of makes the leitmotif of the whole album. Even if there's room for daydreaming ("Higher II") or slower kind of shoegaze ("In Time"), the tracks that especially stay in the head are those more frivolous.

The Smilies pochodzą ze słonecznej Kalifornii, mają wesołą nazwę i grają muzykę, którą można nazwać rozrywkowym shoegaze'em. Na swojej debiutanckiej krótkiej płytce pokazują jak można grać muzykę jednocześnie chwytliwą i bardzo głośną.

Płytę dedykują zespołom takim jak Lush, Spacemen 3 czy Astrobrite i doskonale słychać czemu. W muzyce The Smilies jest dużo z klasycznego shoegaze'u, przede wszystkim dzięki naprawdę hałaśliwym i dość surowym gitarom ale także z genialnej twórczości Jasona Pierce'a lub Primal Scream - zwłaszcza jeśli chodzi o zabawę samplami (i nic dziwnego, że wśród pojawiających się fragmentów przed znakomitym "In My Head" jest "Loaded" tego ostatniego). 

Kolejnym z cytowanych utworów jest "Love Sensation" Loleatty Holloway i to trochę jest również myśl przewodnia całej płytki. Nawet jeśli jest na niej miejsce na zadumę ("Higher II") czy trochę wolniejszego shoegaze'u ("In Time") to jednak w głowie pozostają głównie jej frywolniejsze kawałki.

Hundred Year Old Man - Breaching (2018) EN

Coming from Leeds, England, Hundred Year Old Man on their debut album called "Breaching"  show power that any younger person would envy them. Soul crashing guitars and the vocalist's screams are exactly what we want in a well-written post-metal music.

The album is opened with an intriguing intro, in which a gloom, instrumental drone is the only thing accompanying screams produced by the vocalist. It makes a great starter for the overall gloomy album that begins for good with the great  "Black Fire" which goes on for long minutes of ever changing pace and raw noise. It comes to an end with a wall of sound opening "The Forest" which presents one of the few moments in which the band's music gets this flow provided by electronic background. Truly epic music comes with the album's most impressive "Long Wall" where drums and guitars create one, massive wall of perfectly loud sounds.

The Englishmen don't know the meaning of boredom. Sludge metal guitars with their impressive massiveness and the way they warm up as gracefully as a tank, still make some space for catchy samples taken from radio broadcasts or old movies. And, what is quite surprising, for some very slow but also unsettling fragments as the one in "Clearing the Salients".

Wywodzący się z angielskiego Leeds Hundred Year Old Man na swojej debiutanckiej płycie "Breaching" pokazują siłę, której pozazdrościła by im niejedna młodsza osoba. Miażdżące gitary i wściekłe krzyki wokalisty są dokładnie tym, czego oczekujemy bo dobrze napisanej post-metalowej muzyce.

Płytę zaczyna intrygujące intro, w którym ponury instrumentalny drone jest jedynym, co towarzyszy screamowi wokalisty. Dobrze wprowadza ono do ponurego w wydźwięku albumu zaczynającego się na dobre w znakomitym "Black Fire" ciągnącym się przez długie minuty zmiennego tempa i surowego hałasu. Utwór dobiega końca w ścianie dźwięku otwierającej "The Forest", w którym następuje jeden z nielicznych momentów, w których muzyka zespołu nabiera flowu dzięki elektronicznemu backgroundowi. Naprawdę epicko zaczyna się robić w najefektowniejszym na płycie "Long Wall", gdzie perkusja i gitary tworzą prawdziwą ścianę doskonale głośnych dźwięków.

Anglicy z pewnością nie pozwalają się nudzić. Sludge metalowe gitary, zachwycające swoją masywnością i rozkręcające się z gracją wielotonowego czołgu zostawiają nieco miejsca dla chwytliwych sampli wziętych z audycji radiowych czy starych filmów. A także, co dość wyjątkowe, dla kilku bardzo spokojnych choć niepokojących fragmentów, tak jak "Clearing the Salients".

ate - Secondary Drowning (2018) EN

ate is a project created by Bulgarian artist Petar Petkov (actually Poland-based), who elevated his experimental drones to the unbelievable heights of melancholy. "Secondary Drowning" includes tons of emotions expressed with this calm and at the same time overwhelming music.

The title of the album is a phenomenon where a person drowns with their lungs filling up with water long after they were rescued. It is a fitting metaphor here as the density and massiveness of the music generated by the Bulgarian knocks down and makes you want to give up and just let the currents of music carry you. The album is divided into four parts and they offer condensed melancholy you can't ignore. Especially in the most beautiful here "Wave III" while getting this airy angelic vibe.

ate to projekt bułgarskiego artysty Petara Petkowa (zresztą zamieszkałego w Polsce), który swoje eksperymentalne drony wywindował do niesamowitych wyżyn melancholii. "Secondary Drowning" to cała masa emocji wyrażona tą spokojną a jednocześnie przygniatającą muzyką.

Tytuł płyty to zjawisko polegające na tym, że topiący się człowiek umiera na zalanie płuc już długo po uratowaniu. Jest to niezła metafora bo gęstość i masywność dźwięku generowanego przez Bułgara powala i sprawia, że chce się poddać i zawierzyć ciągnącemu cię nurtowi muzyki. Podzielona na cztery utwory płyta to skondensowana melancholia, obok której nie sposób przejść obojętnie. Zwłaszcza, gdy w najpiękniejszym "Wave III" dostaje wręcz anielskiego-eterycznego vibe'u.

Pat Moon - Romantic Era (2018) EN

Pat Moon, just like her name suggests, creates ambient pop that is best listened to at nights. Her new album called "Romantic Era" makes a compilation of dream pop songs veiled with a thick layer of mystery and darkness.

This distance between the audience and the artist is the first thing you notice. It sounds as if Moon performed her music while being in trance on a forest meadow floating with moonlight. This is what makes her works so compelling, otherwise it would be somewhat blurred dream pop to dance to but now it just boils with airiness and beautiful atmosphere although, when one should listen closely, there is a layer of lively, pulsating electronic sounds to be discovered.

One of the best tracks include "Longing for the Infinite" with xylophone ruling the backgrounds and "The Way I Used To" based on a clear, electronic beat line. Throughout the whole album I couldn't shake off the feeling that I'm listening to Grouper who decided to make some dance music. Quality.

Pat Moon, tak jak jej nazwisko wskazuje, wykonuje ambientowy pop, którego najlepiej słucha się nocami. Jej nowa płyta, "Romantic Era" to kompilacja dream popowych piosenek powłóczonych bardzo grubą warstwą tajemniczości i przyjemnego mroku.

Ten dystans między słuchaczem a artystką to pierwsze, co rzuca się w uszy. Brzmi to jakby Moon wykonywała swoje utwory w transie, tańcząc gdzieś na skąpanej blaskiem księżyca łące w ciemnym lesie. Zabieg jest szalenie udany bo to, co w innym przypadku byłoby skocznym, może tylko trochę rozmytym popem, w jej wykonaniu kipi od eteryczności i wspaniałej atmosfery, chociaż, gdy ktoś się przysłucha, odkryje warstwę żywej, pulsującej elektroniki.

Znakomicie brzmi między innymi "Longing for the Infinite" z królującymi w tłach dzwonkami czy zbudowana na elektronicznym bicie "The Way I Used To". Przez całą płytę nie mogłem oprzeć się wrażeniu, że słucham Grouper, której zamarzyła się muzyka taneczna. Godne polecenia.

Winter - Ethereality (2018) EN

Winter is first of all Samira Winter, half-American, half-Brazilian, raised on the American punk and Brazilian pop. And creating dream pop that is airy but bright like a sunny weather. Her new album is called "Ethereality" and the title says it all about the music you can find there.

With her very interesting voice, the artists sings pop choruses that are half-covered by a veil of airy sounds, and it all swims in neon lights. The most interesting are those part where Winter gets to the highest highest gear of being catchy (as in the best track here, "Alligator"), but also when quite suddenly and out of nowhere somewhat more aggressive guitars appear making a great contrast against the overall atmosphere of the album (as in "Black Sea" decorated with almost punk chorus).

The further the album goes, the more dreamy it gets. The last final tracks present dense, airy dream almost without the pop part. It is where Winter's voice turns into a beautiful dream and the ballad-like structure of the songs let you float engrossed in those sounds.
