Ziggurat - HYPNOS (2022)

Ziggurat's PREFACE was an album I found particularly interesting on the post-rock scene back in 2019. Although years passed, the Texas band's eclectic and very broad definition of the genre hasn't changed. HYPNOS was meant to be released back before the pandemics hit and it took some years to finish after all.

Led by a grand piano, HYPNOS really feels like a fruit of many years of work. These compositions are very jazzy and chill-out-like. The pace is not very high but it's not the important thing here. There are still many things going on in every second of the album with the piano sounds cementing them together into the psychedelically diverse wholes. It was designed to meet the expectations of people of various musical interests who should be glad to taste this "musical smoothie [that] creates a refreshing experience" for all. It certainly makes the listener more relaxed, the mesmerizing compositions create a perfect environment for escaping the world's busy reality and, as such, the album should be praised.

The Texas-based Ziggurat on their new album decided to play with the listeners with riddles. But even without that, the music on Preface is intriguing, even though the album is only an appetizer for the incoming main dish.

Part of the album refers to a mythological story. Which one? We don't know as the artists avoid spoiling the mystery and the listener has to figure it out alone. There's a hint though in "the cryptic poem that's included as a bonus item with the album download", and the solution is going to be on the incoming long play. Interesting idea, isn't it?

Musically speaking, the album is based on the piano sounds with some extremely eclectic post-rock.  The apparent chaos created by the Americans begins in Six Skulls and doesn't go away until the very last track. It brings a lot of jazzy vibes but also does not feel abstracted from the post-rock spirit of the album.

Teksański Ziggurat na swojej świeżutkiej płycie postanowił zabawić się ze słuchaczami i zadać im zagadkę. I bez tego jednak ich muzyka na Preface jest intrygująca i nawet jeśli album jest tylko przygrywką do nadchodzącego dania głównego, warto po nią sięgnąć.

Część płyty nawiązuje do pewnej mitologicznej sagi, jednak artyści nie zamierzają nam niczego podawać na tacy i słuchacz musi się domyślić o czym jest muzyka, której słucha. Podpowiedzią jest "the cryptic poem that's included as a bonus item with the album download", a rozwiązanie będzie przedstawione nadchodzącą długogrającą płytą. Interesujący pomysł.

Muzycznie natomiast twórczość na płycie oparta jest na dźwiękach pianina, któremu towarzyszy bardzo eklektyczny post-rock. Pozorny chaos stworzony przez Amerykanów pojawia się w Six Skulls i nie ustaje aż do samego końca. Dodaje to całości bardzo wyraźnego jazzowego vibe'u, a jednocześnie nie sprawia wrażenia odklejonego od post-rockowego ducha wiszącego nad całością.
