The Japanese of Of Decay and Sublime managed to use their magic on us with their split release with Sequoian Aequison and now they show a short debut EP. And if they are going to develop in this way (although the musicians are absolutely not debutantes), they should have a beautiful career in front of them. Yes, Psalm, La Mer is so good.

The album is filled with extraordinary atmosphere. It is provided first of all by the beautiful strings making a lot of dark and melancholic noise. They are obviously helped by guitars and here, as the album's title suggest, the sea of their sounds sweeps listeners off the ground. it's indeed like the great masses of water - not really rapid and aggressive but slowly and steady and terrifying noise makes a l lasting impression. Great two tracks and now I'm waiting, as probably a lot of the post-rock world, for something more.

Japończycy z Of Decay and Sublime zdążyli nas już oczarować splitem z Sequoian Aequison, a teraz pokazują niedługą, debiutancką EP-kę. I jeśli tak będą się rozwijać (chociaż oczywiście muzycy to żadni tam debiutanci) to wiele przed nimi. Tak, Psalm, La Mer jest tak dobry.

Płyta pełna jest wyjątkowej atmosfery. Dbają o to przepiękne smyczki, robiące dużo mrocznego i melancholijnego hałasu. Do tego dochodzą oczywiście gitary i tutaj już, tytułowe zresztą, morze ich dźwięków zmiata słuchaczy z powierzchni ziemi. Przypomina to właśnie wielkie masy wody - obywa się bez ekstremalnej gwałtowności, ale powolny, pewny swego i przerażający hałas robi wrażenie. Znakomite dwa kawałki i czekam, tak jak pewnie duża część post-rockowego świata, na więcej.

Two projects from different geographical zones that met on one album signed by a reversed mountain and created a thrilling post-rock masterpiece. The first one, known from Vampillia Ukita Takahiro of the Land of Cherry Blossoms, the second - a band from Tzar's Petersburg. Besides the negative mountain they are connected with magical music too.

The two tracks by Takahiro are played on strings and restless guitars forcing their way forward in the first one and delicate, tearjerking keys in the second. There is longing and agitation and view of breathtaking mountains in it. For the Japanese artist, music is "a unique and pure experience that goes beyond knowledge and passion". Just like in the project's name, he combines beauty and passing away in it.

Sequoian Aequison are on the other hand focused on experiencing more than high pace or catchy melodies. Post-rock-ish ambient, grey sky over a snowy peak. "Cavern" is almost physically dirty and dark, "Nemuri" sounds like climbing on a rocky slope. The Russians want to create "dark and innovative music that is a reflection of their emotions and experience" and they surely succeed in this quest.

Dwa projekty spod innych szerokości geograficznych spotkały się na jednej płycie spod znaku odwróconego szczytu i nagrały niesamowicie przejmujące post-rockowe arcydziełko. Pierwszy to znany z Vampillii Ukita Takahiro z Kraju Kwitnącej Wiśni, drudzy to zespół z carskiego Petersburga. Poza negatywnym szczytem łączy ich jeszcze magiczna muzyka.

Dwa utwory Takahiro zagrane są na smyczki i niestrudzone gitary wyrywające się w każdej sekundzie do przodu w pierwszym utworze i delikatne, wyciskające łzy klawisze w drugim. Jest w nich i tęsknota i wzruszenie i widok na zapierające dech w piersiach góry. Muzyka to dla Japończyka "wyjątkowe przeżycie i czyste doświadczenie wykraczające poza wiedzę i pasję". Tak jak w nazwie swojego projektu, łączy nią piękno i przemijanie.

Sequoian Aequison to z kolei bardziej przeżywanie niż wysokie tempo czy porywające melodie. Post-rockowy ambient, szare niebo nad ośnieżonym szczytem. "Cavern" jest niemal fizycznie brudne i mroczne, a "Nemuri" to epicka wspinaczka po skalistym zboczu. Rosjanie chcą tworzyć "mroczną i innowacyjną muzykę, która odzwierciedla ich emocje i przeżycia" i z pewnością im się to udaje.
