Ruby Haunt - Watching the Grass Grow (2021)

I know that I post about the Californians next to every year. But it's not my fault they release so many new albums and the new ones are usually very, very good. It's no different with this year's Watching the Grass Grow, the duo's sixth in their discography.

They don't change their style much and it's good; if something's not broken, don't change it. There are, however, fragments that draw the audience's attention particularly strong - like the organ-like keys in Roman Candle or the beautiful piano works in Penny. Still, the clue of the band is its ethereal potential. As every time I write about them, I have to say about the massively dreamy vocals, the moody, slow pace of the ballads, the melancholia-infused lyrics. It's no surprise that the band's music sounds best in autumn, when the reality needs those kinds of warm and sad vibes. So this is less of a review and more of a reminder that autumn tastes better with a new Ruby Haunt release.

Ruby Haunt - The Middle of Nowhere (2019) EN

The California-based band appears on the blog every time they come up with something new. And no wonder as the Victor Pakpour-Wyatt Ininns duo like not much other projects is capable of creating the most delicate dream pop. Their new release is called The Middle of Nowhere.

I keep saying this but it's worth it: Ruby Haunt's music is one of the most subtle dream pops, perhaps on the same level as Cigarette After Sex, but slower and less catchy. Instead, filled with the breathtaking atmosphere of melancholia and autumn mist. Still, it doesn't matter there's no tracks that stand out on the album as there are for example Curtain Call, impressing with synth sounds Answering Machine or charmingly mesmerizing Tire Fire. Ruby Haunt don't slow down their career and virtually each year show something that is melancholically fantastic and definitely worth attention.

Duet z Kalifornii pojawia się na blogu za każdym razem, gdy skonstruują coś nowego. I nie ma co się dziwić, bo duet Victor Pakpour-Wyatt Ininns jak niewiele innych zespołów potrafi tworzyć nadzwyczaj delikatny dream pop. Najnowsza ich produkcja nazywa się The Middle of Nowhere.

Powtarza to za każdym razem, ale warto: muzyka Ruby Haunt to jeden z najbardziej delikatnych dream popów, być może na poziomie Cigarette After Sex, ale wolniejszy i mniej przebojowy. Za to zachwycający gęstą atmosferą pełną melancholii i jesiennej mgły. Nie znaczy to, że na płycie nie ma utworów zapadających w pamięć. Na pewno takimi są Curtain Call, zachwycający dźwiękami syntezatorów Answering Machine czy uroczo hipnotyzujące Tire Fire. Ruby Haunt nie zwalniają tempa i praktycznie co roku tworzą kolejną, melancholijno-fantastyczną i warta uwagi rzecz.

One and a half year from releasing Nevada, Ruby Haunt are back with a long play album and they make the comeback in a great style. The Wyatt Ininns - Victor Pakpour duet serve us an incredibly atmospheric album combining all the most ethereal sides of shoegaze, dream pop i electronic music. What more do you need in autumn?

Already the introduction in Sucker makes the fittingly nostalgic and airy at the same time welcoming call, and it only gets better. Darling makes probably my favourite track by the Californians: wonderfully delicate vocal and almost ridiculously airy music with the bass line as its only aspect that stands out - this is this subtle and atmospheric dream pop.

It's definitely not the only track that is worth attention on this very balanced album: Non Sense has a breathtakingly airy finish, Demon a dreamy melody, and It Will Happen the Next Time Around filed with fantastic synths. The whole album has so much magic a the "blue hour" from the title, the time just after sunset when the world seems to be less real than usually.

Półtorej roku od wydania Nevady, Ruby Haunt wracają z długogrającym album i robią to w wielkim stylu. Duet Wyatt Ininns - Victor Pakpour serwują nam niezwykle atmosferyczną płytę łączą wszystkie najbardziej eteryczne cechy shoegaze'u, dream pop i elektroniki. Czego chcieć więcej jesienią?

Już intro w Sucker nastraja odpowiednio nostalgicznie i eterycznie jednocześnie, a potem jest tylko lepiej. Darling to prawdopodobnie mój ulubieniec spośród utworów Kalifornijczyków: znakomicie delikatny wokal i niemal do przesady wręcz eteryczna muzyka zespołu, z linią basu jako jedynym wybijającym się jej aspektem - taki to delikatny i nastrojowy dream pop.

To zdecydowanie nie jedyny warty uwagi kawałek na tej bardzo równej płycie: Non Sense ma zachwycająco oniryczną końcówkę, Demon jest sennie melodyjny, a It Will Happen the Next Time Around wypełniony fantastycznymi syntezatorami. Cała płyta natomiast ma w sobie tyle magii, co tytułowa "blue hour", czas po zachodzi słońca, kiedy świat jest trochę mniej realny niż na ogół.

Najwspanialszym sposobem podania smutku i melancholii jest przebranie ich za łagodny, ciepły dreampop i serwowanie na gorąco. Tak właśnie robią Kalifornijczycy z Ruby Haunt. 

"Nevada" zaczyna się króciutkim "Headrush", które jednak szybko pokazuje, o co chodzi na całej płycie. Już drugi utwór, "Destroyer", urzeka prostą lecz nastrojową melodią, welwetowym wokalem i jednym z tych refrenów, które łączą minimalizm (jedno, powtarzane słowo) z głębią przekazu. 

"Glory" to z kolei chwilowa zmiana tempa, muzyka zaczyna się być powolna, balladowa i bardziej łzawa. Chwilowa bo już "Desert Candle" to powrót do sprawdzonego schematu z "Destroyer". Całość przywołuje na myśl Cigarettes After Sex (nieprzypadkowo co jakiś czas się do nich odwołuję) i na pozór przyjemnie kołysze ale, jeśli ktoś zapragnie się w muzykę wgłębić, może spalić na lasy Nevady.

The best way to serve sadness and melancholy is to dress them up as pleasant, warm dreampop and served hot. This is what the Californians from Ruby Haunt do.

"Nevada" begins with a short "Headrush" that shows what the whole album is about. Already the second track, "Destroyer" inspires with its simple but moody melody, velvet-like vocals and on of those choruses that combine minimalism (one looped word) with the meaning's depth.

"Glory" is a short change of pace, music becomes slow, ballad-like and more tearsome. It's short because "Desert Candle" is a come back to the solution from "Destroyer". the whole thing makes me think about Cigarettes After Sex (it's not a coincidence I compare many things to CAS recently) and pleasantly relaxes the audience but if one decides do go deeper into the music, it can burn you down like a fire in the forests of Nevada.
