Great Cold Emptiness - Immaculate Hearts Will Triumph (2023)

The project led by the Maine-based Nathan Guerrette, Great Cold Emptiness, has recently released his third ever album and the final part of the "The Becoming of a Man" trilogy. Called Immaculate Hearts Will Triumph, the album is filled with heavy guitars and blackgaze vibes.

As he already managed to get us used to, Guerette creates a top-quality atmospheric black metal bordering with oneiric blackgaze. The compositions here are both dreamy and nightmarish, airy and heavy, soothing and enraging. There is some of black metal's riff racing and tons of angry vocals hidden somewhere under the haze of music. But the flow and the dispersed effects make it all extremely shoegaze-like. This whole powerful and inspiring atmosphere is needed on the album to talk about self-realization, the importance of friendship and "the triumph of the heart and overcoming the most difficult stages in a man's life: him finally leaving home". Nothing quite inspires awe just like a well-tailored blackgaze.

Crystal Canyon - Yours with Affection and Sorrow (2021)

Earlier this year, my attention was caught by Crystal Canyon's excellent single. I blogged already about them when they released their debut album back in 2018 so I knew what can be expected. And indeed, Yours with Affection and Sorrow makes a great example of classy and noisy dream pop release.

The albums is opened by the most ethereal moment in the very dream pop angelic Pollyanna as, although the whole release is kept in this tone, it is usually more guitar-based with more shoegaze-like fragments. Those come as soon as in the second track, Luminous with its heavy wall of sound in the chorus and Lynda Mandolyn's airy vocals put on top. This is a top-quality shoegaze there. There's quite a lot of mood changing as some tracks are very rock and roll in their dance nature (Boomerang) while others either noisy and heavy (fittingly crushing in Crush You) or simply heading towards indie pop ballads (Tender Waves). The whole album sounds like dream pop played by people who very well know what shoegaze is. And it shows.

Great Cold Emptiness - Death Gifted a Bouquet (2020) EN

Great Cold Emptiness is the result of collaboration between multi-instrumentalist Nathan Guerrette and vocalist Meghan Wood. The band have just released their second LP called Death Gifted a Bouquet  and presented there their absolutely phenomenal, diverse post-metal/blackgaze.

There's so much on this album. Already the first track, The Erotic Waltz, starts by tearing the space apart with its airy vocal-induced post-metal with Violet Cold's vibes only to change to greatly moody piano passage with Gregorian choir and finally to folk-inspired atmospheric dark noise. This unorthodox amalgamation of airy, sometimes even sacral elements with post-metal nature of the Americans' music is the most interesting thing on the album and it climaxes probably in The Little Deer. 

The whole album is carefully thought through and "follows the story of a grieving mother living in solitude in the middle of a large autumn forest and the straining relationship she has with her daughter". Therefore not only the darkness of post-metal but also folk inspirations are well justified. The album is so diverse and engaging that it completely didn't feel like an hour, fantastic work.

Great Cold Emptiness to efekt współpracy multi-instrumentalisty Nathana Guerrette i wokalistki Meghan Wood. Zespół wydał właśnie swoją drugą płytę długogrającą, Death Gifted a Bouquet, i pokazał na niej absolutnie fenomenalny, różnorodny post-metal/blackgaze.

Mało czego nie ma na albumie. Już pierwszy kawałek, The Erotic Waltz, najpierw rozrywa przestrzeń wzbogaconym eterycznym wokalem post-metalem w stylu Violet Cold by po chwili zaprezentować znakomicie nastrojowy pasaż z pianinem i gregoriańskim chórem w tle a w końcu inspirowany folkiem klimatyczny dark noise. Właśnie to nieoczywiste połączenie eterycznych, czasem wręcz sakralnych wątków z post-metalową naturą muzyki Amerykanów jest na płycie najciekawsze, a zenit osiąga jak się wydaje w The Little Deer. 

Cały album jest uważnie przemyślany i "opowiada historię pogrążonej w żałobie matki mieszkającej samotnie w głębi jesiennego lasu i napiętej relacji między nią a jej córką". Stąd nie tylko mrok post-metalu ale i folkowe inspiracje są jak najbardziej uzasadnione. Album jest tak urozmaicony i wciągający, że zupełnie nie zauważyłem jak minęła ta godzina z okładem, fantastyczna pozycja.

Crystal Canyon - Crystal Canyon (2018) EN

Crystal Canyon may have borrow a name from God Is An Astronaut's song (from their album "Moment of Stillness") but instead of moody post-rock, they play the catchiest and most rebellious shoegaze you can imagine. 

The whole debut album by the Portland based artists is one big garage concert - with the whole insensitivity and honesty of its sounds and energy pouring off of their music. Plus the airy voice of Lynda Mandolyn that makes Crystal Canyon's music more shoegaze than punk-rock.

The Americans' strongest side is authenticity. It is audible both in ravenous songs ("Silverday") and almost post-rock-drone compositions ("Sleeper"). They are not afraid of take a lively pop song and drown it in the omnipresent noise ("Permeate") either only to seduce the audience with long (for their standards) and extremely atmospheric "Only in a Daydream" and "Sometimes Summertime" after a while. Thanks to all of this, they sound as if they had started the band three decades ago.

Crystal Canyon być może pożyczyli nazwę od God Is An Astronaut (którzy nagrali "Crystal Canyon" na swoją płytę "A Moment Of Stillness") ale zamiast nastrojowego post-rocka grają najbardziej przebojowy i zaczepny shoegaze jaki można sobie wymarzyć.

Cała debiutancka płyta portlandczyków to jeden wielki koncert w garażu - z całą intensywnością i szczerością dźwięków oraz energią kipiącą z ich muzyki. A do tego eteryczny głos Lyndy Mandolyn, dzięki któremu muzyka Crystal Canyon to bardziej shoegaze niż punk-rock. 

Siłą Amerykanów jest autentyczność. Słychać to zarówno w drapieżnych kompozycjach ("Silverday") jak i w zasadzie post-rockowo dronowych pasażach ("Sleeper"). Nie boją się też wziąć radosną, popową piosenkę i zanurzyć ją we wszechobecnym noise'ie ("Permeate") by za chwilę zauroczyć publikę długimi jak na swoje standardy i niezwykle nastrojowymi "Only in a Daydream" i "Sometimes Summertime". Brzmią dzięki temu jakby zespół założyli dobre trzy dekady wcześniej.
