BAZGROŁKI - Przełamując fale (2026)

The Tricity music scene is said to be one of the most important ones in Poland, but living on the other side of the country makes it very distant for me, even in the age of social media. I was lucky enough to get to the new album release show where BAZGROŁKI showed to the world how dramatic the change in their music had been recently and how well they can now enchant the audience with the dreamy and mesmerizing music.

Because Przełamując fale is not a debut album, but more of a reborn: the days of the funny indie pop rock are gone and the artists embrace the more mature and way darker music now. The album's title is the Polish translation of von Trier's classic movie Breaking the Waves, but it's also a reference to the sea-oriented nature of their home city of Gdańsk and finally, a sign of a breakthrough in the band's story. The artists claim that it is a "sonic drift between the sea and the subconscious", making comparisons between sea waves and sonic waves and I find it apt and beautiful. And just like the sea, the sound here is massive.

If I HAD TO choose, the balance between the airy shoegaze atmosphere and the heavy guitar psychedelia is slightly shifted in favor of the latter (and it was even more pronounced during the live performance). The desert-like psychedelic walls of sound go on for ages and then you realize the song is already gone and you've been staring into space the whole time it was on. Sometimes those are more like the calm sea, without any recognizable feature, just a constant stream of noise (Bezmiar!), sometimes there are notes that rip through to make you pay attention (in Meduzy!) and then they disappear into the depths of sonic waves once again. The tide has turned for BAZGROŁKI.

Sunset Images - Oscilador (2026)

Back in 2018 I attended one of the best discontinued festivals in Poland. And that edition of SpaceFest was brilliant, it featured SPOIWO (one of two best post-rock bands in here, together with Ciśnienie, as we know), Medicine Boy and this unlikely hero: a psychedelic band from Mexico. And as most of SpaceFest artists, it took the whole audience far from Earth. Now, Samuel Osorio and the team come back with their third release and it's filled with the same vibes I remember.

In many places I can notice that Sunset Images is tagged as shoegaze project. While there certainly are some clear inspiration drawn from the genre, to me it's really the psychedelic rock that makes it so special about the Mexicans. Yes, there are fuzzy, ethereal vocals that add the airiness to the whole stuff, but they are accompanied by the roughest-sounding, desert-like guitars ever with a little trace of electronica. It is an invitation to the trance induced by the guitar noise that takes us to the hot and sun-kissed desolations of Central America so everyone can appreciate the psychedelic sunsets on their own.

The album, mixed by Alberto González (of Lorelle Meets the Obsolete) and mastered by Oliver Ackermann (A Place to Bury Strangers), revolves (!) around the way our world revolves all the time. "Our world is cyclical; everything repeats itself: our history, our customs, our trends, our way of communicating", the band says and, furthermore, they illustrate it with their repetition-rich music that goes on and on, bringing the audience a message of criticism of everything wrong about the reality around (!) us.

Laikamorí - △​△​△ (2023)

The Peruvian artists who currently live in US, Laikamorí, made me fall in love with their unique and weird music with their fantastic debut Persōna five years ago. Now, they are back and △​△​△ proves that the debut was not a coincidence.

Based on electronic music that can be both lively and energetic as well as dark and gloomy, Laikamorí's compositions spark awe with how uniquely they sound. The industrial influences take over most of the tracks but they have to share with almost-dub-like electronica and noisy ambient parts. And this all is accompanied by one of the most interesting vocals out there: high-pitched and dreamy that express this partly gibberish partly poetic lyrics to make everything glow with the most attractive kind of musical mystery. 

And this is the first time I can post here, under a band picture I took personally. Apart from being extremely talented, the two artists proved to be super friendly when they spent some time in Kraków back in 2021.

Tajak - La sombra del agua (2022)

Tajak are from the capital city of Mexico and they have been doing their extremely entertaining psychedelic rock since 2015. Their new album, La sombra del agua (or "The shadow of the water") is already their fifth, although it is my first meeting with their music. Hopefully not the last.

The artists admit that the way they recorded this album was different from the previous, more improvisation-oriented ones. This one was created through a "much more patient, meticulous and intimate process" and I have to say that I dig this creativity-filled, complex playlist. The other thing is the range of various instruments used during recording, including ocarina, sitar, flute and more with a heavy dose of field recordings from the lush, Mexican landscapes. 

One thing that is very special about this album is the huge amount of instrumental ambient passages that create a unique, exotic but also extremely moody atmosphere which can soon enough transform into noisy sections (like in Soñar es despertar). The whole thing feels closer to the subtle, mysterious soundscapes than any kind of rock and the delicate, barely audible vocals add to this feeling too. But the whole album is structured like a post-rock song: it gets louder and louder throughout the whole hour. Still, even if, in my favourite parts, guitars take over, the overall feeling is still slowly mesmerizing and this is something I appreciate a lot at this release.

KAATAYRA - Inpariquipê (2022)

Caio Lemos comes from Brazil and creates his music under the moniker of KAATAYRA. And it's quite outstanding what he does: the blend of psychedelic rock and black metal makes the last year's Inpariquipê really special.

He also calls his music "acoustic black metal" and I can understand why: the whole compositions are based on the repetitive passages of drums and... pretty exotic-sounding tropical music in the backgrounds. The psychedelic music's ability to mesmerize the audience is all over the place here, which makes the compositions suck the listener in with ease. This tropical component is also extremely interesting; it needs no explanation that black metal is usually connected with cold places (geographically speaking) and when a project's from a country like Brazil (and the South American metal scene is also very strong), they usually embrace the Nordic themes as well. Kaatayra is an exception here; every second of his music says that he's very well connected to the tropical reality around him and I appreciate that.

So where's the metal part in all of this actually? The artist's fifth album is filled with instrumental music mostly, but there are fragments that include his desperate, angry vocals. Still, they feel like they are put in the backgrounds, sounding more like shouting in a wilderness with much anger, but not so much power when compared to the forces of nature. It's perfect in Dundararaiê where the metal vocals additionally get a tribal treatment only empowering the mesmerizing features of the whole album.

Inwavves - This Summer (2021)

Formerly known as Adasteris (a name that still shows in many places and is now used as a moniker for a small label the artists established), Inwavves is a band from Dublin that "combines elements of alternative metal, shoegaze, post-rock and Boards of Canada-esque electronica into it's own sound" and their (what seems to be the third) album This Summer shows how gracefully they can do that.

The music here is clearly a combination of several music genres. The overall psychedelic rock atmosphere encompasses very dreamy vocals that appear concurrently with metal-like screams (slightly hidden in the backgrounds, so impressive in Siebenundsiebzig) in what can only be described as trip-hop-like dreamy compositions. They can, and usually do, easily get louder and strictly guitar-based (as is the case in This Summer, the title track) and turn into post-rock-like crescendos. Truly, almost every track here sounds as if taken from a different music world, while together they still seem to keep a coherent whole. So there's some neoclassicism in Forever, some dad-rock guitar riffs in Someday Soon or the already mentioned metal-like vocals. This complexity of genres, this eclectic style of the band is something that attracts towards this release.

Oslo Tapes - ØR (2021)

I have my private theory that if there's a name of a city in a band's name, the artists are not from there. And so Oslo Tapes are from Italy but they surely sound like they are inspired by Scandinavia. Their third album only builds on those inspirations with the title, ØR, meaning "dizzy, confusing" in Norwegian. Perfect word to be used here to be honest.

As it strongly suggests, Marco Campitelli and his band make a very noisy and form-fluid psychedelic rock, let's say noisier Rakta-like vibes. The only thing more psychedelic than the music itself is this sentence taken from the album's description: "[it's] a dizzying ride through a feverish dreamscape of imaginary Norwegian highlands painted in cubistic shapes". This music is all about the mesmerizing, trance-inducing guitar passages filled with feedbacks and reverbs. It's also so noisy you can feel it in your teeth, like grainy sand getting its way through your body. There are vocals as well, but they are withdrawn and hidden under the guitar haze, often resorting to whispering like in Zenith.

This works both when they decide to go on with a ballad-like dreamscape (Kosmik Feels) or a full-blown, drums-fuelled psych-rock experience - Bodø Dakar works especially well as the latter with its crazy drums-work (this is the Rakta vibes I sense so much), lively and emotions-filled chanting and tropical traces enrich the general atmosphere of this song. Or in the extremely engaging finish in the Obsession Is the Mother of All (that sounds like it was Ride-inspired perhaps). But the vibes of the whole album are best summarized in Norwegian Dream - the perfectly satisfying psychedelic soup of haze, I love it.

Withered Witch - Infinite Void (2021)

A new thing from Texas. This is one of the best quality very heavy albums I heard this year. The band you can find next to nothing about in the Internet, seem to be debuting now with an EP called Infinite Void.

In their tracks, the Americans make the best of metal music genres, post-metal atmosphere and stoner rock's heaviness. You can feel the loudness with all of your body's cells and it does feel phenomenal. The post-metal pace is slow but also inevitable, emanating this powerfulness that is typical for epic nature phenomena. Scary, yes, but also mesmerizingly beautiful and fascinating. This is very tangible especially in Grave Moss, the way the vocals are distorted here evokes some horror-like, primal fears inside you. The way the band combine a lot of things from a lot of genres, as well as the free form and inclinations to experimenting (within a genre's limits) makes me think of this music as psychedelic metal. And I enjoy every second of it.

This Lonely Crowd - Bellelouder (2021)

This is one of the most prominent alternative bands on the Brazilian scene. It doesn't mean they are very popular outside of the country, I hadn't heard of them before honestly, but I can safely say that they should be. This year they released their 8th album in the over a decade-long career and entitled it Bellelouder.

What they do is a great rendition of what the 90s. noisy rock was. Very indie rock-like but also extremely noisy and rough in form, the songs here could as well be recorded 20 years ago by The Jesus and Mary Chain or some other, similar artists. The psychedelic spirit of this music means, however, that the compositions here are far from straightforward ones, they can easily be a harsher pop rock hit song but also a psychedelic guitar-fest going well without much vocals and form as well. This, together with the retro vibes, means that you can hardly get bored while listening to the release.

There's also another thing, I know it's probably not true but I can sense (or imagine) some interesting inspirations taken from Neil Gaiman's works. Like the cover art similar to the ones from Sandman comics written by the author or a made-up word "Neverwhere" casually used in a track title. I'm probably reaching (mostly because Gaiman is one of my favourite writers), but it would be super interesting if true.

The Welton Shipwreck - A Fire in a Field of Snow (2021)

Two artists from UK, Stu Head a.k.a. Stooj and John Culkin a.k.a. jculkin, make up The Welton Shipwreck, a lo-fi, electronically-infused project that strikes with awe with their ability to create catchy tunes like those on the debut album called A Fire in a Field of Snow.

They call themselves the "purveyors of fine psychedelic folk-rock" and indeed, the amount of psychedelia in their music is what strikes most. It's clear that the project does not aim for perfect quality of the sound but it's very much not important (also, it may be because the album was recorded online between Scotland and Yorkshire). This music is all about melodies and catchiness without being pop-like lazy. They are curious and not afraid to explore, the choruses they create consist of many layers of sounds and vocals and they are made so it works together as a whole.

Already Unspent High, the album's first track after intro, shows that. The chorus here is simple and short but it's looped in such a mesmerizing way that it just stays in the head. Even in the calmer ballads, there's constant buzz in the backgrounds that makes the compositions full of life and energy. That's some psychedelic vibes I like.

The Loving Memory - The Loving Memory (2020) PL

"Eteryczny noise z nadmorskiego miasteczka" czyli The Loving Memory z Cleethorpes ze Wschodniej Anglii to zespół debiutujący właśnie (jeśli nie liczyć płyty-demo) długogrającą płytą. Ich The Loving Memory to ekscytujący i dobrze rokujący space rock.

Zaczyna się ona znakomitym kawałkiem Why?, w którym najważniejsze są gęste, wszechobecne i głośne gitary a wokal dla tej psychodelicznej kompozycji jest raczej efektowną ozdobą. Co ciekawe jest on na całej płycie bardzo wyraźny i z czasem dominujący, bardziej brzmi jak spokojniejsza wersja Roberta Harveya z The Music niż typowo-space rockowe pomruki w tle. Dzięki niemu kolejne oparte na krótkich frazach kawałki są bezwzględnie chwytliwe i skłaniające do podrygów.

Mimo tego jak przebojowe są takie kawałki jak Why?, Another High czy VHS, najfajniejsze na krążku jest to jak dobrze ujarzmiony jest gitarowy noise, który ciągnie całość do przodu i wydaje się, że nigdy nie zwalnia (poza interludium pod koniec płyty). Całość zamyka No Feeling, w którym artyści dali sobie więcej luzu i gitarowa muzyka rozlała się na prawie 10 minut, a tak efektowne finisze są mi szczególnie drogie.

The Loving Memory - The Loving Memory (2020) EN

"Ethereal noise from a coastal town" meaning The Loving Memory from Cleethorpes in East England, have been recently debuting (unless you count a demo album) with their long play. Their The Loving Memory makes an exciting and well-promising space rock.

It's started with a great track Why? in which the most important thing are the omnipresent and loud guitars while vocals are more of a nice ornament for this psychedelic composition. What's interesting the vocals on the whole album are super clear and, in time, start to dominate, sounding more like a bit paced down version of Robert Harvey of The Music then your typical space rock murmuring in the backgrounds. niż typowo-space rockowe pomruki w tle. That's why the songs based on short phrases are absolutely catchy and danceable.

Despite the catchiness of songs such as Why?, Another High or VHS, the coolest thing here is how well-tamed is the guitar noise that leads the way and seemingly never slows down (except for the interlude towards the album's end). The whole thing is finished with No Feeling in which the artists gave themselves some slack and the guitar music breached the damns of short compositions and this kind of finishes are very dear to me.

Psychic Markers - Psychic Markers (2020) PL

Łagodna psychodelia Psychic Markers powraca na trzecim, wydanym jeszcze pod koniec maja albumie. To ważne bo po drodze... pojawiła się jeszcze jedna płyta. Ale tutaj skupię się na bardzo udanym Psychic Markers.

W muzyce Anglików sporo jest nie tylko z psychodelicznej atmosfery spod znaku Flaming Lips czy Grandaddy ale też bardzo kojarzy mi się z art popowym, wodewilowym Jonathanem Bree (jak ktoś nie wierzy, niech posłucha sobie Silence in the Room i zapyta sam siebie jak to nie znalazło się na Sleepwalking Nowozelandczyka. W innych miejscach to, łagodna bo łagodna, ale typowo psychodeliczna muzyka, tak w instrumentalnym Pulse jak i bardziej psych-rockowych Sacred Geometry czy Irrational Idol Thinking.

Płyta zespołu nazywana jest "pięknie zabutelkowanym czasem i miejscem, które magicznie stają się czymś zupełnie nowym", co sprowadza się do mnogości wrażeń, muzycznych światów, które tu się ze sobą stykają tworząc popową mieszankę, która jest nie tylko wciągająca ale też wielowymiarowa. Nie da się nudzić z hipnotyzującą wodzirejką londyńczyków.

Psychic Markers - Psychic Markers (2020) EN

Psychic Markers' delicate psychedelia psychodelia comes back on the third, May-released album. It's important because after that... another album appeared. But I will here focus on the very good Psychic Markers.

In the Englishmen's music there's a lot from not only psychedelic atmosphere with Flaming Vibes and Grandaddy's vibes but also reminds me a lot of the art pop, vaudeville-like Jonathan Bree (if you don't believe me, check out Silence in the Room and ask yourself how come it's not featured on the New Zealander's Sleepwalking. In other places, it's, however delicate, typical psychodelic music, both in the instrumental Pulse and more psych-rock Sacred Geometry and Irrational Idol Thinking.

The band's album is called a "beautiful bottling of time and place that magically ends up somewhere completely new", and this describes the variety of sensations, music worlds that collide here making a pop mixture that is both catchy and multidimensional. There's no way you can be bored with the London-based musicians' mesmerizing ceremony.

Castletroy - Искусство Спит (2020) EN

The Russian Castletroy is a band I've had under my radar for a while now. Up til now there was always a thing missing for them to appear on my blog but with their newest EP Искусство Спит my doubts left me and I knew it's the time.

The Petersburg-based duo play their own mixture of psychedelia, shoegaze and dream pop. Lively backgrounds, diversity and strong bass line of the first, atmosphere of the second and melodies with backing vocals from the last. The vocals sometimes clear, sometimes more dreamy make a good fit to this music. Personally I find the fact that the songs are sung in Russian as a huge advantage, it's always some sort of novelty. The EP's highlight has to be Бумага, the catchiest track and at the same time one that charms with atmosphere. The Russians' career is worth following.

Castletroy - Искусство Спит (2020) PL

Rosyjski Castletroy to zespół, który od dłuższego czasu mam na radarze. Do tej pory zawsze czegoś brakowało żeby dostać się na mój blog, jednak wraz z nową EP-ką Искусство Спит, nie miałem wątpliwości, że to ten czas. 

Duet z Petersburga gra swoją wypadkową psychodelii, shoegaze'u i dream popu. Żywe tła, różnorodność i silna linia basu tej pierwszej, atmosfera drugiego oraz melodie i chórki ostatniego. Wokal czasem wyraźny i silny, czasem falsetujący i bardziej rozmarzony dobrze się z tym komponuje. Dla mnie sporym plusem jest też śpiewanie w języku rosyjskim, to zawsze jest jakieś urozmaicenie. Highlightem EP-ki jest chyba Бумага, najbardziej przebojowy, a przy okazji ujmujący atmosferą kawałek. Warto uważnie obserwować dokonania Rosjan.

Kolejny w ostatnich miesiącach singiel artystki/-ty znanej/go również jako Debbie Debased z Kanady. Bardzo interesujący projekt - mocno melodyjnie popowy ale również bardzo noise'owo shoegaze'owy. Ma w sobie to coś, w tym roku ma wyjść cała płyta.  Dwa utwory kosztują 5 złotych (1,5 CAD).

Skippy Spiral - Circuit Circus (2020) PL

Jedna z dziwaczniejszych rzeczy na moim blogu, Skippy Spiral to "a music clown & entertainer" z Savannah, a jego ostatni album, Circuit Circus, to prawdziwie punkowo-psychodeliczna mieszanka z akordeonem i cyrkiem na pierwszym planie.

Fascynacja cyrkiem do tej pory kojarzyła mi się bardziej z klimatycznymi i mrocznymi balladami The Irrepressibles, tymczasem Amerykanin to bardziej lo-fi'owa psychodeliczna jazda bez trzymanki. W opisie albumu na stronie wydawcy, przeczytać można, że w muzyce artysty "akordeon, keyboard i wokal charakterystyczny dla cyrkowego nawoływacza są akompaniowane muzyką przenikniętą..." i tu następuje prawdziwa litania gatunków muzycznych z punkiem, industrialem czy muzyką klezmerską. Żeby było jeszcze ciekawiej, Circuit Circus to concept album opowiadającym farsę/przypowieść o ludzkości uploadowanej do wirtualnej rzeczywistości.

Płyta składa się z wielu po punkowemu szybkich kawałków w bardzo lo-fi'owej estetyce. Kilka, jak Vicious Circle, Shadowish Puppetry czy Clownbot 3000 natychmiast zapadają w pamięć. Ten album to na pewno ciekawostka, ala taka, której muzyczna warstwa też się broni.

Skippy Spiral - Circuit Circus (2020) EN

This is one of the most peculiar things on my blog ever, Skippy Spiral is "a music clown & entertainer" from Savannah, and his newest album, Circuit Circus, makes a really punk-psychedelic mixture with accordion and circus on the foreground.

The fascination with circus up to this point in my mind was mostly about atmospheric and dark ballads by The Irrepressibles, that said, the American makes more like a lo-fi psychedelic joy ride. In the description featured on the label's Badcamp, you can read that in the artist's music "accordion/keyboard & carny barker style vocals is accompanied by original music that infuses..." and then there goes an impressive list of music genres with for example punk, industrial or klezmer. To make everything even more interesting, Circuit Circus is a concept album telling a farce/parable about the humankind uploaded to artificial reality.

The album consists of the lot of punkishly fast songs in a borderline lo-fi style. Some, such as Vicious Circle, Shadowish Puppetry or Clownbot 3000 instantly make their way to the listener's mind. This album is definitely a fun fact, but also one the musical layer of which is worth checking out too.
