Strangers in My House - Leave It Undefined (2023)

Although on the local stage, they feel like they have been around forever, technically speaking, the Kraków-based Strangers in My House have only just released their debut LP. And with Leave It Undefined , the band proves that they are one of the best noisy bands in the country and perhaps one of the most underrated ones in general.

The band is known for their love for classic shoegaze music (RIDE for instance) and it's clearly felt in their songs. The hazy guitars backgrounds give away those inspirations pretty easily: while the songs in general are pretty much traditionally formalized, the chaos in the backgrounds can be pretty impressing. But this noise and this chaos are mostly kept in the backgrounds give way to the melodic vocals by Magdalena Radecka. Those are quite far from the distorted shoegaze standards and bring more of the fun, indie rock vibes. Indeed, the band admits that they wanted to keep the debut album in a more "energetic and groovy" atmosphere, compared to the previous releases (which is especially audible in the swift and surprisingly fast Destination Point).

The symbol of their musical road is Words, a song that featured on their very first single in 2019, now, in an improved form, is one of the highlights of the debut album. And to be honest, next to all of the tracks on this short album deserve to be called "highlights".

Strangers in My House - Strangers in My House (2020) EN

Strangers in My House is a Kraków-based band, the debut of which I'd been looking forward to for a year. And it's here, the first album from the artists who combine in their music shoegaze inspirations and catchy indie rock.

As it could have been predicted, the band admits to be "inspired mostly by shoegaze and dream pop music from the ‘80s and ‘90s". They sound more like Mazzy Stars than My Bloody Valentine, the compositions are more traditional and closer to the catchiness of the borderland between dream pop and indie rock. Magdalena Radecka's vocals are quite clear and suggest the latter, although their atmospheric side cant be denied, especially in more ballad-like tracks like Circles. 

Some songs are instantly remembered, especially Rays of Sun with the choire that you immediately start to hum, more rock'n'roll The Other Home or louder Stalker. And finally the finish of the album in the harder, shoegazeingly catchy Storm. It's a pity though, that singles released a year ago didn't make it to the album as they would have only enriched it.

Strangers in My House to krakowski zespół, którego debiutu wyczekiwałem od roku. W końcu jest, pierwszy album artystów łączących w swojej muzyce shoegaze'owe inspiracje i efektowny indie rock.

Jak należało się spodziewać, zespół przyznaje się do bycia "inspirowanym głównie przez shoegaze i dream pop z lat 80-tych i 90-tych". Bardziej brzmią jak Mazzy Stars niż My Bloody Valentine, kompozycje są bardziej tradycyjne i bliżej im do przebojowości pogranicza dream popu i indie rocka. Wokal Magdaleny Radeckiej jest dość wyraźny i sugeruje to drugie choć nie sposób odmówić mu nastrojowości, zwłaszcza w bardziej balladowych kawałkach takich jak Circles. 

Kilka piosenek zostaje w pamięci, przede wszystkim Rays of Sun z jego refrenem, który natychmiast zaczyna się nucić, bardziej rockandrollowe The Other Home czy głośniejszy Stalker. No i zamknięcie płyty w mocnym, shoegaze'owo przebojowym Storm. Szkoda natomiast, że nie znalazły się na niej single sprzed roku bo na pewno tylko by ją wzbogaciły.

Cult Junkie - Boas from the Inside

An obscure project from Louisiana released their probably first track. And you have to say it's extremely interesting - mesmerizing and unique vocal by Jacob Disedare, drum machine and juicy bass line based compositions and... their own visual way. Very well done. The single can be your for whatever you pay.

Very psychedelic and very shoegaze project from Chicago. Dreamy and very ethereal vocal and mighty bass lead the compositions. The single and a bonus track is available for 1 USD.

This track is already a couple month old but the band got some attention only now. And it's a good thing as the Polish shoegaze, especially from the city I live in, has it already easier in my ranks. Dense atmosphere and brisk, energetic vocal by Magdalena Radecka are the project's best sides. The single costs whatever you want to pay.

Mało znany projekt muzyczny z Luizjany pokazał chyba pierwszy swój kawałek. I trzeba przyznać, że jest to nadzwyczaj ciekawe - hipnotyzujący i oryginalny wokal Jacoba Disedare, oparte na automacie perkusyjnym i soczystym basie kompozycje oraz... pomysł graficzny na siebie. Bardzo udane. Singiel można mieć, za ile się chce zapłacić.

Bardzo psychodeliczny i bardzo shoegaze'owy projekt z Chicago. Rozmarzony, bardzo eteryczny wokal i potężny bas ciągnący całą kompozycję. Singiel i utwór bonusowy można mieć za 4 złote (1 USD).

Ten utwór ma już kilka miesięcy, ale o zespole zrobiło się trochę głośniej w ostatnich tygodniach. I dobrze, bo polski shoegaze, w dodatku z miasta, w którym żyję, zawsze ma u mnie spory plus na starcie. Gęsta atmosfera i orzeźwiający, energetyczny wokal Magdaleny Radeckiej to największe zalety ich materiału. Singiel kosztuje tyle, ile chce się zapłacić.
