Boneflower - Armour (Instrumental) (2021)

Armour was a screamo/post-hardcore-filled album released a year ago by the Spanish band Boneflower. Now, it's proven that the content definitely holds up as a post-rock/post-metal whole with the instrumental version of the album showed (or bound to be showed as the Bandcamp page claims the release date is set to September) in 2021.

These origins mean one thing: the music here is dangerously energetic and loud. The constant stream of rapid guitar sounds fills the listener's attention to the point where nothing else seems important. The ever-changing riffs and melodies gravitate towards math-rock experience while the heaviness of this sound clearly suggests that it was meant with metal vibes in mind. Especially when the guitars are set loose, which happens very often, so they feel like a blizzard of sound (more than just a precise blade of noise) in the centre of which the audience suddenly appears. It feels so good in tracks like Saltpeter and Polarity, but in truth, the whole album is one the same, good level, no doubts.

The album on Bandcamp doesn't include all the tracks that appeared on the original release, perhaps they will be added later (and thus the release date). Still, the material here is so good that every fan of loud and guitar-saturated instrumental music should reach for.

MANTIS - Glint (2020)

MANTIS, the Belgian one, is a band that has been on the border of post-rock mainstream for some time now. I remember them from their debut LP called Magnolia but there was also a number of EPs. At the end of the last year, they came back with another LP called Glint, released by dunk!records, and proved they have everything to be more recognized in the world.

Complex but not hasty compositions on heavy, almost post-metal-like guitars with occasional violins and vocals (by Jacques Nomdefamille in quite ethereal Altamont with those shoegaze'y vibes) - this is their music. Big role of the bass line makes it very melodic in a darker way, something like math-rock meeting post-metal, the chaotic energy and heavy atmosphere together make their music roll. This feels best when the musicians give themselves more room to fully develop the compositions like it is in the longest tracks on the album. Especially in the already mentioned Altamont in which they reach some tribal-trance-pure energy levels or, though a shorter one, Hessian, flowing with loud and crunchy guitars and lively pace. It makes me wonder how awesome their live gigs, can't wait to see them somewhere in Europe.

A Burial at Sea - A Burial at Sea (2020) PL

O liverpoolskim A Burial at Sea miałem okazję postować już w momencie ich debiutu EP-ką ​..​.​And the Sum of Its Parts dwa lata temu. Potem był jeszcze gig na Bergmal Festival zeszłą jesienią, a teraz mogę w końcu powiedzieć, że wyjątkowy post-rock zespołu doczekał się wydania długogrającego na A Burial at Sea.

Niewiele zespołów post-rockowych decyduje się na użycie w swoim line-upie instrumentów dętych, na myśl przychodzą mi jeszcze norwescy szaleńcy z genialnego Spurv. Tymczasem dla Anglików jest to w zasadzie podstawa twórczości, na swoim profilu sami swoją muzykę nazywają "trąbkowym rockiem". To oczywiście uproszczenie, bo jest w niej dużo, dużo więcej, ale fakt jest faktem. W muzyce zespołu dźwięki trąbki dodają jeszcze więcej szaleństwa do już i tak math-rockowo chaotycznego post-rocka, w którym nastroje, tempa i melodie zmieniają się co i rusz.

Natomiast muzycy dają sobie spokojnie radę również, gdy trzeba zakończyć kawałek w bardzo post-rockowy, monumentalny i głośny sposób (Lest We Remember) czy gdy chcą połączyć pełną napięcia gitarową kompozycję z chóralnym wokalem o tęsknocie za domem (Lightning Blanket). A dźwięki trąbki zawsze temu towarzyszom i zawsze dodają kolorytu.

A Burial at Sea - A Burial at Sea (2020) EN

I posted about the Liverpool-based A Burial at Sea when they showed their debut EP ​..​.​And the Sum of Its Parts two years ago. Then there was a gig at the Bergmal Festival last autumn and now I can safely say that the band's unique post-rock has finally an LP form on A Burial at Sea.

There's only a few post-rock bands that use the trumpet's sounds in their music, actually, I can think only of the Norwegian crazy guys of the brilliant Spurv. That being said, for the English band this is essentially the basis of their work, they even call their music "trumpet rock" on their FB account. Of course, this is understatement, there's so much more in it, but a fact is a fact. In the band's music the trumpet sounds add on to the madness of the already math-rock-like chaotic post-rock in which the moods, paces and melodies change every second.

But the artists feel good also when it's the time to finish a song in a very post-rock, monumental and loud way (Lest We Remember) or when they want to combine a very tension-filled guitar composition with some chanting about home sickness (Lightning Blanket). And the sounds of the trumpet are always there and always add to the colourfullness of the music.

Jardín de la Croix - Letargo (2020) EN

Jardín de la Croix is a band from Madrid, that I was lucky to see live during Dunk!Festival last year. So the memories are great and now I can revisit them with some new material from the band on the EP released four years after Circadia, called Letargo.

The Spanish like playing fast, complex and seemingly chaotic guitar post-rock. It's even difficult to follow particular sequences as they are like crazy squirming snakes while the tracks jump around from fast-paced fragments meant to dance to nice, little, piano-based parts like those in Brechas. It seems then that the band make a exemplary, model math rock, in every detail sounding as it should (which is weird for such a chaotic genre). Even the finish of the first track makes a real ecstasy for the math rock fans. It's a shame it's so short as the two tracks don't fulfill anything and only tease the listener who wants to dance and jump around more.

Jardín de la Croix to zespół z Madrytu, który udało mi się zobaczyć na żywo ba Dunk! Festivalu w zeszłym roku. A więc wspomnienia mam dobre, teraz natomiast mogę posłuchać nowego materiału na wydanej cztery lata po Circadii, EP-ce Letargo.

Hiszpanie lubują się w graniu szybkiego, skomplikowanego i pozornie chaotycznego gitarowego post-rocka. Ciężko jest śledzić poszczególne sekwencje bo wiją się one jak w szalonym tańcu, a utwory skaczą pomiędzy szybkimi kawałkami do tańca a ładnymi, budowanymi na dźwiękach pianina fragmentami, takimi jak w Brechas. Wydaje się więc, że zespół gra wzorowy math rock, niemal od linijki taki, jakim być powinien (co jest ciekawym stwierdzeniem dla tak chaotycznego gatunku). Nawet zakończenie pierwszego kawałka to istna ekstaza dla fanów tej muzyki. Szkoda, że tak krótka jest to płytka bo dwa kawałki nie zaspokajają apetytu i tylko droczą się z chęcią do tańca i skakania.

Bokotono - Bokotono (2020) PL

Irlandzki zespół Bokotono z dalekiego zachodu Europy to debiutujący powoli solidnie zapowiadający się zespół z pogranicza math rocka, post-rocka i ogólnie instrumentalnego grania. Po wydaniu w ostatnich latach kilku singli i EP-ek, w tym roku postawił na kolejną, zatytułowaną po prostu Bokotono.

Instrumentalna muzyka zespołu ma za zadanie "połączyć grzmoty rockowych riffów z delikatnymi progresywnymi wywijasami". Faktycznie, sporo jest tutaj progresywnego charakteru, post-rockowej atmosfery i math rockowego eksperymentu. Ale najlepiej ich muzykę oddaje chyba określenie psychodelicznie instrumentalna. Ich riffy są szalone, ale oprócz dźwiękowego oczopląsu pozwalają również oddać miejscami ciężką i pełną zagrożenia atmosferę. Tak jak w imponującym Butcher No Blood. Najważniejsza jednak jest u nich zabawa mocnymi, gitarowymi dźwiękami i świetnie się w tym odnajdują.

Bokotono - Bokotono (2020) EN

The Irish band Bokotono from the very West of Europe, are slowly debuting solid artists from the borders of math rock, post-rock and generally instrumental music. After releasing some singles in the last years, they showed their second EP now, one called simply Bokotono.

The instrumental music of the band is supposed to "combine thunderous rock riffs with delicate progressive flourishes". Indeed, there's a lot of progressive spirit, post-rock atmosphere and math rock experiments there. But the best way to call this music is probably psychedelically instrumental. Their riffs are absolutely crazy, but besides the musical fluttering, there's also, at least in some places, heavy and nervous atmosphere. As in the impressive Butcher No Blood. Still, the most important on this album is how they play with heavy guitar sounds and how good they are in this.

Town Portal - Of Violence (2019) EN

One of two extremely interesting albums released recently by an Australian label Art As Catharsis is a work from the Danish Town Portal. Drawing from bot instrumental post-rock and minimalist experiments artists showed their third album called Of Violence.

It is actually post-post-rock, deconstructed instrumental music fascinates with unique and non-compromised approach. Their energy comes from apparently chaotic composition of melodies, paces and sounds in general. Both the quicker fragments (brilliant Archright) and surprisingly ballad-like (Receiving End) have their originate atmosphere. Town Portal use raw-sounding guitar riffs and absolutely crazy drums but the core of their music is the unorthodox way of writing music that is closer to experimental music than traditional post-rock.

Town Portal - Of Violence (2019) PL

Pierwszy z dwóch nadzwyczaj interesujących albumów wydanych niedawno przez australijską wytwórnie Art As Catharsis to dzieło duńskiego Town Portal. Czerpiący zarówno z instrumentalnego post-rocka jak i z minimalistycznych muzycznych eksperymentów artyści wydali tam swój trzeci krążek Of Violence.

Ten w zasadzie post-post-rock, dekonstruowana muzyka instrumentalna fascynuje oryginalnością i bezpretensjonalnością. Energia ich muzyki bierze swój początek w na pozór chaotycznym zestawieniu melodii, temp i dźwięków. Zarówno te szybsze fragmenty (świetne Archright) jak i zaskakująco balladowe (Receiving End) mają swój klimat. Town Portal posługuje się surowymi w brzmieniu gitarowymi riffami i szaloną miejscami perkusją, a u podstaw ich muzyki leżą nieortodoksyjnie napisane kompozycje które przypominają bardziej muzykę eksperymentalną niż bardziej tradycyjny post-rock.
