Blueneck - Moonlighting (2026)

"10 years in the making, forged through chaos, illness and persistence", yes, Blueneck's new album is gonna be the second of the comebacks after a decade since the last album was released this week. Possible one of the albums I'd waited the most this year as The Outpost was really a highlight of 2016. The now-duo overcame the challenges and finally gave us their 8th album and I can safely say that it lived up to the hype.

Heavier dependency on the electronic sounds, come back after years, changes in the line-up. Some time ago Piano Magic came back as Theory of Ghosts and I can hear some similarities in what is happening to Blueneck right now. The sound is slightly different, but the core is there: just as it was on The Outpost and before, the British artist are capable of creating phenomenal atmosphere sitting somewhere between slowcore, post-rock and art pop styles. Based on the beautiful vocals and sad lyrics, formed with synthetic beats and electronica and finally underlined with the guitar noise finishes, most of the compositions on Moonlighting follow the pattern and it works like a gem.

Return to Cadiz ends with hypnotic guitar-focused section that makes you transcendent yourself for a while, Goliath charms with its melodies, but my favourite piece here has to be the title song, Moonlighting. The vocals and the piano keys lead through the first part of the track and its cosy ambiance only to be slowly transformed into a beautifully chaotic mix of sounds and back into an atmospheric ballad. This is going to be one of the most important albums of the year for me.

Million Moons - You Be Good, I Love You (2026)

Another one of the post-rock "everything will be alright" entitled albums is here courtesy to the British outfit Million Moons. But unlike Lost in Kyiv's sweet and melodic synthpop of post-rock music from the last post, here we have guitar music with some real gravity to it. This is the kind of sounds you feel with your whole body when the artists want this.

And they want it very early on. My favourite track in here is actually the opening one: Titan of the Deep. Massive walls of sound waltz into the picture like the title's titans, giving away the feeling of grandeur and importance. It's not the darkest music though, the subtle but unmistakable keyboard balances the weight when needed, adding to the beauty of the release. And this balance is maintained throughout the album with some tracks getting closer to the melancholic side of things while others impressing with the sheer loudness of the guitars. 

The artists point out that the music on the album should be paired with experiencing nature, listening to this kind of post-rock in some kind of monumental environment (like... mountains I guess) should indeed be spectacular. Indeed, the monumentality of the music is perhaps the most important aspect of the new release. I still have the guitar blizzard of Secret Histories playing sweetly in my ears (and that makes me forgive them the jazzy passages in Memories of a Past Life;)).

Mike Lazarev - Gradiscence (2026)

Born in Ukraine, living in UK, this ambient producer with the looks of a hermit and the music sensibility of a poet made some more magic and enchanted it onto a short EP entitled Gradiscence.  His unhurried piano-based soundscapes create this kind of atmosphere that is as cozy as it is beautiful.

Not everything he makes gets to me, but this year's EP is another release after 2023's Sacred Tonalities that touched my spiritual side. There is something in the quality of those key sounds accompanied by next to nothing else that strikes me throughout the album. Every one of them feels like a finger touch on my spine, bringing an overwhelming feeling of warm if nostalgic embrace. The minimalism of the compositions really brings the piano sounds out so that they can charm the audience freely. Still, my favourite part of the EP is the one where the piano finally gives up and submerges into the moody, omnipresent electronic drone. Love it.

LYR - Dark Sky Reservation (2026)

The combination of spoken word poetry and alternative music is something that appeals to me a lot: so this year's BIG SPECIAL will be LYR - similarly hailing from UK but besides that, extremely different: instead of the post-punk spirit, LYR combines the unique vocals with artsy and pretty minimalist electronica and neoclassical music. This is LYR's fourth album and I'm very excited to discover the rest of their discography.

The lyrics here are, of course, the clue. And I already love some of the phrases/sentences coined for the album (especially the chorus in Blah! Blah! Blah! with the actual medical condition choice blindness embraced and used in a lyrical way) as well as particularly clever and sometimes hilarious word craftsmanship. Again, Blah! Blah! Blah! is a great example here: a song I'm genuinely as invested in the "plot" of the song as in the song as a musical entity in general. As could be expected (I knew, there is a post-punky element to this music), the album is very much a commentary about the world we live in as the artists describe themselves as "navigating towards sightings of hopefulness and constancy in an increasingly bewildering and storm-battered world".

The album title as well as a number of songs on it reference also the changing climate which is a) as interesting a topic as it is terrifying and b) not that much touch upon in music. Yet. But it has to be said that the band create a perfectly catchy songs as well. And with ease too. Eclipse is a perfect example of a song that steals the chorus from some kind of radio hit and repurposes it to accompany another brillant sheet of lyrics.

VLMV - There Will Come Soft Rains (2026)

Pete Lambrou is now the whole VLMV and he just released his new album with Pelagic Records. The "ambient-ish post-something" of his is as spiritual and tasteful as ever with a very heavy focus on the "singer/songwriter" part of the music, making me think of Raised by Swans a lot, not only because of how beautiful his vocals are.

This is this kind of post music that should be closer to post-pop or post-singer/songwriter than anything else: the core of the compositions here IS the lyrics and the vocals combo and the song's gravity is built by their presence. The sensible, lyrical songs don't care about the melodies that much, their role is to catch the listener and guide them from the chaotic reality of today's world into a safe place of beauty and calm. Even if in a very bitter fashion: "Robins will wear their feathery fire/Whistling their whims on a low fence-wire/And not one will know of the war, not one/Will care at last when it is done" reminds me very much of the post-war songwriting in Poland with a modern, pessimistic twist.

And this highly artistic sensibility of VLMV is noticeable also in the visual side of the project with one of the most striking cover art examples I know. Musically speaking, the artist's cheeky self-description is exactly spot on: the music here certainly feels ambientish with soundscapes made of soft electronica, moody violins and delicate guitars as well post-something-ish as the whole thing took off from the Scandinavia-esque dark pop and landed somewhere else.

Richard Neale - The Walls Fell (2026)

It's quite a story, while getting to write this piece, I thought of starting with saying that I hadn't heard such delicate vocals and music in a while but I checked my post on Richard Neale's 2017 album EVES and realized that it's EXACTLY what I wrote back then. And it's been almost a decade (sic!). This year, the dreamy and folky singer/songwriter from UK came back with his first longer album since... exactly 2017.

"Delicate" is an adjective you need to repeat over and over again when writing about The Walls Fell. I can hear this music as singer/songwriter acoustic guitar lyrical solo venture or a folky, nature-centred, forest-longing cry for escape, but ultimately it is all overshadowed by the utterly oneiric atmosphere that rules single-handedly on the album from the start to the final notes. The piano-based but very often built over with a range of other instruments compositions sound like coming from a dense fog in an English countryside in an early morning. And the vocals that join them are just... yes, delicate of course. Always but sometimes even more than that (King Blue!).

The album certainly feels like work of one man, although there are vocals by Karen Stally in some tracks too. But while usually I prefer a team effort in creating music, this time, it's just perfect. It gives me David Bramwell's Oddfellow's Casino (also south of England!) vibes, but even more foggy and sleepy. Love it.

TVAM - Ruins (2026)

Joe Oxley uses the moniker of TVAM to create a curious blend of electronica, post-punk and dreamy music that is also extremely catchy at the same time. On his third record Ruins, roughly half of the songs could easily become radio hits (if radios were any good these days), which is a fantastic recommendation to try this oneiric banger machine.

The darkwavey vibes, the post-punky vibes, the dream poppy vibes: everything is present on Ruins, Oxley clearly draws from various sources, having fun with concocting the perfect mixtures for music lovers. The Words Real Life, or my favourite Follow Me Home are the catchiest thing you can imagine. But at the same time, the album is meant to reflect the pain of grief and the "strange beauty that comes with it", a curious form of a disco music for dead inside, a dance setlist for lonely and lost. Follow Me Home is just the darkest thing you can lose yourself on the dancefloor to and I love it. In his own words, the artist's music refers to memories and fears of the audience which, for me, is a perfect explanation why dream pop and post-punk meet here.

Sugar Horse - Not a Sound in Heaven (2026)

The messy and chaotic mix of nugaze, pop, post-metal and pure anger that boils with energy and noise! Yes, the Brits of Sugar Horse are back! The third album came quite soon after the last one and I couldn't be happier as it's exactly what I love in this Machine Girl meets Nothing project. It just makes me jump around, even on this grey and melancholic day.

Although they still call themselves "a decidedly average band", they don't fool anyone anymore. Three albums in and it's still a fresh and exciting take on modern noise music. Short phrases for short attention spin suffering audience, tons of shifts in paces and melodies, angry screaming being a neighbour of soft, atmospheric choruses. And it's all put together and melt into a perfect modern album that calls extreme eclecticism being "decidedly average". This blend is a mesmerizing one indeed.

It's only fitting that the lyrics here are slightly poetic but very timely comments on the reality around us. The reality that is equally chaotic and messy but also way less appealing. "Brought to heel/Trained not to feel" in Secret Speech and "Keep the market free/And if it bleeds/We can kill it for you" in Fire Graphics being only two examples of the poignant and not-so-fun-at-all themes on the album .Sugar Horse, the missing horseman of the Apocalypse.

Dear Gravity & Raphah - Chronos (2026)

Another transatlantic collaborations in recent months makes it to the blog. This time it's a short EP made by Mike Graff aka Dear Gravity from the States and the artist known as Raphah from UK. It is short, but it's also so beautiful like a drop of dew in the morning sunshine.

As is clearly stated in the EP's title, the main theme of music here is the concept of time. The slow, introspective compositions feel like they are meant to make you experience the time flowing around you, from nothingness to nothingness. But while this concept is dreadful (to me and I'm sure to most people), the artists turn it into a thing of beauty. Thick layers of ambient with occasional droplets of piano sounds always get me. The album's slow pace and beautiful combination of neoclassical and ambient sound is a perfect way to end a day.

Chalk - Crystalpunk (2026)

The Ulster band became a sensation with only three EPs ever released, but this is history now as the Ross Cullen - Benedict Goddard duo are finally releasing their debut album and it's as good as could be expected. The powerful music that blends post-punk, industrial and several other exciting genres leaves mark after the very first listening session. Welcome to Crystalpunk.

The music here marries various kinds of electronic and guitar music: the dark and the darker. The industrial vibes are all over the place, the electronic parts are designed to overwhelm you while make you dance like a psycho at the same time. It's the kind of a sound you feel with every inch of your body. The high-pulse compositions are the core of this release: high pace and angry, chaotic post-punk vocals do their job so well! And I can't even say which songs are best here, all I know is that the artists are really good at picking the single tracks.

But there is more to the album than only the adrenaline-fueled hits. The uncomfortable lyrics sound best when screamed out, no wonder that the word "pain" appears everywhere at the release, mostly referring to the emotional struggles the artists lived through. As the description of the album goes, it was inspired by "the beauty, confusion, complexity, and intensity of [the artists'] youth – lived under the shadow and around the scars of conflict. In many ways it reminds me of Glasvegas' lyrics even if musically the two couldn't be much different. The duo is planned to come to OFF festival being one of the major reasons for me to go there too this year.

Callière - Solar (2026)

Andrew Rose makes his music for ages now! His music alter ego came back in 2021 after a long hiatus and there's already 6 albums released as Callière. Solar, the final one, makes me think of the classic shoegaze artists as it is as dreamy as it could be while being a clearly offstream gazey project. No wonder that Rose has some interesting connections to Nick Noble of 93MillionMilesFromTheSun, one of my favourites within the sub-genre.

Rose's music is based on dreamy and dense backgrounds and very airy vocals. The important parts are the melodies: in fact, everything in this music is about extremely catchy melodies (sometimes drawing from the old pop song-like motifs as in Calling Claire from Clare) submerged in the oneiric atmosphere. The compositions are never loud, it's way more dream pop than shoegaze, especially that the backgrounds seem to be designed to creating the atmosphere rather than than to draw attention to themselves. It's the melodies that matter, even when they drown in the noisy music (in the beautiful cover of The Pains of Being Pure at Heart's Anne with an E). 

This album is said to be inspired by the artist's "journeys along the Camino in northern Spain, where the landscapes and the quiet rhythm of long days on foot sparked a wave of new songwriting" and I can definitely sense this in the unhurried compositions that take their time to get through start to finish, more interested in the landscapes/soundscapes around. I love it. The album features also a handful of guests, but I don't recognize anyone. Still, the vocals provided feel like a good match for the compositions.

Theory of Ghosts - The Sulphur and the Grey (2026)

For many reasons, Closure by Piano Magic was an album as important as it was devastating to listen to for me. It also crowned the band's discography in near perfect way, but still meant that there was a musical presence I would sorely miss. Fortunately, on Piano Magic's ashes, Theory of Ghosts rose and it shares a lot of common things with its predecessor. And the artists behind it have just released their debut album!

Theory of Ghosts is Glen Johnson and Franck Alba (of Piano Magic) who, together with Robert Hervais-Adelman, create something I would call minimal ghost rock. All the PM fans out there will quickly recognize the vocals (obviously) but also the lyrical flavour that, to me, a person from Central Europe, is so strikingly British. I love it and I love when they sing about UK and London (places I've never been to, let alone have any relationship with) but also about more universal aspects of life. "When nobody knows who you are, you can do whatever you want" being probably the sentence I will take with me from this one.

Music-wise, it's a minimal (but still very artistic) electronica that has a hint of this autumnal sadness I associate these vocals with. Especially when it's joined by subtle guitar sounds and strings. Sometimes the electronic part is even more... beepy. I know it's not a word, but listening to Blame makes me think of this word. Theory of Ghosts is a great name as it's like listening to a ghost of something that used to be, but also to something that is completely new in form.

Tethered Hands - How We Live Is How We Die (2026)

I've covered their debut album exactly a year ago, but these guys have a great ability to create new music fast! And here we are, the transatlantic project is now five people in a band (they don't have a picture together though from obvious reasons) and two albums in their discography. Their piano and guitar kind of post-rock is as beautiful as ever and so the project band is one to have your eyes on as this time next year they will probably surprise us with even more great music.

As I mentioned before, pianist Joseph D. E. Phillips (US) (hi, Joseph!) and guitarist Daniel Rickards (UK) created ANOTHER transatlantic pact, but their aim is to create instrumental music despite of the obvious geographical barriers. Like a lot of water between them. Together with three new members (Pascal Normand, Sam Wallis and Joshua Cook), they can now fulfill the dream of becoming a real post-rock band, not just a project. And I think it's noticeable in their music: the complex compositions gained more dimensions while still having the same core values: piano keys as the structure that is complimented by guitar noise.

The artists translate their emotions into instrumental music, making it affect the audience in turn. As Joseph mentions: "We want [the fans] to feel something. We want the hairs to raise on their arms and their eyes to go wide". With the beauty of piano sounds, the ethereal, tear-jerking passages (so well done in Your Mind Is Going (I Can Feel It) and the guitars that ultimately add heaviness to the compositions, I feel like this goal has been reached. Make ŁŚ feel something? Check!

Smote - Songs from the Free House (2025)

I'm so surprised that I have just found Daniel Foggin aka Smote's new album in Tethered Hand's summary of the best post-rock albums of 2025! I'm surprised because by pure coincidence I will be covering Tethered Hand's release... tomorrow! It's also interesting because it shows how diverse post-rock music can be as Smote's music is just on the border of the genre, yet impresses with similar elements as more traditional post-rock projects.

Foggin blends so many things in his musical cauldron, man! The album starts like a perfect drone release, but then it shifts from desert rock into post-rock passages into space rock psychedelia. And then there is this thing with the flute music whatever you can call it. Listening to this album is genuinely like a road trip with new things to appreciate in every minute of the passing soundscape. And in reality the trip takes place on a desert in outer space and you are in a heavy tank, rocking on the uneven surface of the planet.

The album feels extremely heavy with the heaviness of doom and sludge, even if, quite frequently, it becomes calm and almost soothing. How is it possible? The quiet fragments are designed to emphasize everything else, like the ethereal choral chants in Chamber or the slow guitar riffs everywhere else. It's difficult to imagine an album so diverse and at the same time so coherent: the form changes but the mood stays the same til the end. Ah, yes, and Lankum's Ian Lynch is here too!

adele dazeem - Metanoia (2025)

They are named after actress and singer Idina Menzel (whose first name was famously mispronounced by John Travolta, resulting in her using "Adele" in multiple occasions afterwards), they come from London and they released their first EP last autumn. This blend of shoegazey atmosphere and post-punk vibes caught my attention immediately.

The EP is short, but still it's clearly well done: there are parts that are noisy, there are parts filled with darker, coldwave approach to music, there are some curious instrumental parts too. Their compositions are designed to go on and on, mesmerizing the audience with the harsh trance-inducing passages and overwhelming with noisy guitars. I'm very happy that the musicians don't consider the end of lyrics as the end of their songs: I'd say that in this case, the songs really start after the post-punk vocals disappear. But it's only my instrumental-noise bias probably.

L.O.E. - Chiaroscuro (2025)

So the post-rock gods decided that at the end of 2025, two British bands released some particularly dark-sounding and awe-inspiring albums. I've covered Civil Service here and now I NEED to drop something about Last of Eden aka L.O.E. Maybe it's the zeitgeist, but if it means that we're going to get so good and poignant albums then... Well, then there is at least one bright side of what's going on.

Another common feature with Civil Service is the main theme of the album, as it is a "cinematic exploration of duality—the contrasts between light and dark, despair and hope". What is so striking about this quotation is that it is all clearly audible in music. The dark-sounding guitars, overwhelming and touching, tell the story that inspired the band, the personal struggles of their bassist who has serious problems with his health, but still makes everything to go on and win against all odds with sheer determination. The heaviness of this music with occasional samples and slower moments is a perfect illustration for what a human existence feels like more often than not. 

The band is coming for this year's Dunk!Festival and I'm more than happy to witness this music live. Oh and the aforementioned music gods also decided to have two post-rock albums last year that included the same quotation from Alan Watts (writer, researcher of the Eastern philosophies) with All Is Violent being first in July. So that's fun, isn't it?

Civil Service - DARK /// (2025)

They released their debut album in 2024 and now are following it with the sophomore album or maybe a continuation of the first one. They are from UK, but are not Public Service Broadcasting side project (even if some of the samples suggest so). Civil Service is a band I did not have on my radar, but my post-rock society turned my attention to.

And it's such a good thing they did. The new album begins in the best way possible: with a collaboration with Overhead, the Albatross' Luke Daly on vocals. But even when he leaves the track list, some parallels to my favourite British post-rockers are still audible (the child speaking in Black Giraffes for examples), although this is more classic post-rock than the one featured on I Leave You This. But it's not *THAT* traditional. The beautiful violin soundscapes complimenting the heavy guitars work like charm, the inclusion of samples and vocals enriches the composition while the subtle electronica provides the final touch.

As mentioned already, DARK /// is a continuation of the themes from /// LIGHT, but while the debut album was focused on the humankind's main quest in life: finding something that could be seen as a meaning of existence, the second album "shifts focus to the immovable obstacles in our way". The way the guitars sound feels so dark (Every Beam Of Light Is An Invitation To Death!!!) to me and dark post-rock is what I want. I love this album, if I have found it earlier, it'd certainly make my AOTY charts.

Fuzzy Lights - Fen Creatures (2025)

Out of many music projects that deserve more recognition, I feel like Fuzzy Lights occupies the number one spot in this line. I love the fuzzy and the lights in their music that can be only described as post-folk rock with beautiful songwriting.

I've covered their 2010 album that is one of my favourite releases ever, as well as their great comeback in 2021. Now (it's been already 4 years!), the Cambridge-based band is back again with their signature sound. The way they combine the noisy and rough-sounding guitars and the sweetest of vocals just speaks to me. It's like showing the dark and the bright side of music, of world, of life. 

There is something very British in their songwriting too, making me think about Piano Magic all the time. Maybe it's the similar level of nostalgia, but also not understanding what this nostalgic feeling comes from? I feel it especially well in my favourite track here, War Ditches with its military-like drums completing the picture painted in the song. I'm really glad that the English band came back for good it seems. Now I want to see them finally on stage!

Meena - Different Now (2025)

A blend of genres that gives birth to a concoction that is as airy as it is catchy? Count me in! The Manchester-based Meena has released three EP before their long-play debut, but this is the day now! Or it was in August. Nevertheless, Different Now is hell of an album.

"An incomparably intricate wonderfully listenable burst of mayhem, beautiful delicate sounds woven in a cathartic wave" says the band when asked what they play. I say that the intimate layer of oneiric music, mostly due to the extremely ear-pleasing vocals, is definitely there, mayhem I don't hear. But it doesn't matter as the vocals are accompanied by an artistic blend of electronic music, rock music, trip-hop music, post-punk music. You know how sometimes you see something you know was made out of different elements, but you don't see it at first glance? I have this with this album. 

The electronic sounds in the backgrounds sometimes create melodies but sometimes give out some of the post-punk's roughness (like in Money), which sometimes feel restricted in the trip-hop-like beats. I like artful complications and this is exactly what I get here.

Monochromatic Visions - Change Who You Are (2025)

It's only four tracks, but when something is that good, who cares? I have mentioned the British band a couple of times before and it's no surprise as their music makes a perfect blend of the noisy and the melodic. It was proven on their new EP.

Shoegaze, new wave, pop music. They all have their place within this short release. The music here feels light and unbelievably catchy, but there is a hint of a darker atmosphere and the omnipresent noise somewhere in the backgrounds, like something you catch with the corner of your eye but can't really focus your sight on. All for compositions are worth checking out, including the most poppy one, the first song of the album, I Told You. And frankly, I like it the most, probably because it's as catchy as it can be, a candidate for a summer hit within the noisier offstream world.
