Prime Alone - Monolog (2018) EN

Prime Alone is a solo project by Petr Gidulyanov from Sankt Petersburg, devoted to guitar music and inspired by Kokomo or The Chasing Monster among others. His new album called Monolog is something undoubtedly worth getting familiar with.

The artist wrote the album's music with is mind occupied by "the human as a person and the core of the universe", his meaning for himself and for the infinite universe. But also with Erich Maria Remarque's works. The music here changed a bit comparing to the artist's earlier albums, its sound is now darker, "much more massive and heavier". 

Heavier it really is, Gidulyanov doesn't hesitate from attacking the audience with, sometimes ridiculously loud guitar sounds, the power of which can easily crush the listener. And it does so, with some short breaks, throughout the whole album. It makes it so melancholic in this sad, helplessly aggressive way. Worth it.

Prime Alone to solowy projekt Petra Gidulyanova z Sankt Petersburga poświęcony gitarowemu graniu i inspirowany m.in. Kokomo czy The Chasing Monster. Jego nowa płytka to Monolog i zdecydowanie warto się z nią zapoznać.

Artysta pisał muzykę na płycie z myślą o "człowieku jako osobie i centrum wszechświata", o jego znaczeniu dla samego siebie i dla nieskończonego wszechświata, jak również o prozie Erich Marii Remarque'a. W muzyce na albumie zmieniło się trochę w porównaniu do poprzednich albumów, a brzmienie Prime Alone stało się mroczniejsze, "dużo bardziej masywne i cięższe". 

Jest zdecydowanie ciężko, Gidulyanov nie waha się przed atakowaniem słuchaczy absurdalnie wręcz głośnymi gitarowymi dźwiękami, których moc potrafi wgnieść w ziemię. I robi tak, z przerwami, przez całą długość płyty. Dzięki temu jest ona melancholijna w ten smutny, bezsilnie agresywny sposób. Polecam.

Melasse - Demo Tape (2018) EN

Although Melasse is a Russian band that play metal compositions as thick as the project's name, at the end of the last year they surprised the audience by releasing an album with acoustic versions of their songs. And they managed to make a great impression in this way.

The album's tracks are built not on the electric guitars and noise but on the acoustic ones and this melancholic vibe. And, what's very important, on Ekaterina Yezhova's vocal that sucks the audience into those sadness-filled compositions. This all makes the album strike with a lot of dark folk atmosphere that in the end is destroyed with a droning track hidden behind the album's last Саван.

Another beautiful thing is the cover art with Félix Thiollier's picture from over a millennium ago. No doubt it fits the dark folk climate of the album.

Co prawda Melasse to rosyjski zespół metalowy grający swoje kompozycje gęste jak nazwa projektu to pod koniec zeszłego roku zaskoczyli wydając płytę z akustycznymi wersjami swoich utworów i dają radę w ten sposób.

Kawałki na płycie zbudowanie są nie na gitarach elektrycznych i łupnięciu, a na akustycznych i melancholijnym vibe'ie. A także, co bardzo istotne, na wokalu Jekateriny Jeżowej, który wciąga w niepohamowany sposób w te pełne smutku kompozycje. Wszystko to sprawia, że całość ma w sobie mnóstwo darkfolkowego klimatu, który zniszczony jest na samym końcu w dronującym utworze schowanym po zakończeniu ostatniego na płycie Саван.

Przepiękna jest również okładka ze zdjęciem Félix Thiollier sprzed ponad stulecia. Bez dwóch zdań w mroczno folkowym klimacie płyty.

Meczup - Songs of the Others (2019) EN

Theremin is a music instrument developed by Leo Termen, the function of which is based on field disturbances of human body. Another name for the instrument is etherophone and this alone makes me love it unconditionally. If there's someone who doesn't know the horror-filled sound of theremin, they can catch up thanks to this extremely original album by the Turkish duo Meczup.

On daily basis, the band play electronic music contaminated with some Middle East folk influences, but here, they employed the theremin itself. Together with gothic-flavoured keys, they play, as the title suggests, the songs of others. The others are not chosen by coincidence, this bunch consists of legendary composers including Tschaikovky, Shubert, Mozart and much more. This combination of classical music and theremin that is mostly connected with horror b-class movies makes an extraordinary impression. Especially that the whole album is dominated by this atmosphere that reminds me of some weirdly gothic projects such as The Black Heart Procession. Great idea and phenomenal execution.

Theremin to instrument muzyczny skonstruowany przez Lwa Termena, którego działanie polega na zakłócaniu pola przez obecność ciała ludzkiego. Inna jego nazwa to eterofon, za co ma moje dozgonne propsy. Jeśli ktoś nie zna pełnego grozy brzmienia thereminu, ma szansę nadrobić to dzięki niezwykle oryginalnej płycie tureckiego duetu Meczup.

Zespół grający na co dzień zarażoną bliskowschodnim folkiem elektronikę, tutaj postawił właśnie na brzmienie thereminu. Wraz z gotycko brzmiącymi klawiszami wygrywają oni tytułowe piosenki innych, a są to nieprzypadkowi inni - wśród interpretacji Turków mamy więc i Czajkowskiego i Szuberta i Mozarta i wielu innych. To połączenie klasyki z kojarzącym się głównie z podrzędnymi horrorami thereminem robi niezwykłe wrażenie. Zwłaszcza, że nad całością dominuje klimat kojarzący się z twórczością takich gotyckich dziwolągów jak The Black Heart Procession. Znakomity pomysł i fenomenalne wykonanie.

From Beyond These Walls - The Clear EP (2018) PL

Trio From Beyond These Walls tworzy "instrumentalne soundscape'y z Chicago" i jest w tym naprawdę dobre. Ich debiutancka EP-ka The Clear to połączenie nastrojowego gitarowego post-rocka z porządnym, doomowym łupnięciem.

Klimat niepokoju udziela się od pierwszego utworu. Tytułowe The Clear to połączenie pulsującego gitarowego tła z nęcącymi co chwilę przykładami na to, co by się stało, gdyby zespół pozwolił sobie na włączenie całej gitarowej mocy. Cięższe soundscape'y rozpoczynają się wraz z City of Dystopia, w którym właśnie finał i jego epickie gitarowe dźwięki przykuwają uwagę najbardziej. Równie ciekawy jest Sunrise z jego powolnym, dobrze zamykającym całość tempem.

Trio From Beyond These Walls creates "instrumental soundscapes from Chicago" and they are really good at it. Their debut EP called The Clear makes a combination of moody instrumental post-rock with well executed doom kicks.

The atmosphere of unsettlement gets to you from the very start. The title track The Clear is based on the pulsating guitar background and appearing from time to time examples of what is possible when the band let themselves to make some louder sounds. Those heavier soundscapes begin in City of Dystopia in which the final and its epic guitar sounds draw the audience's attention the most. An equally interesting track is Sunrise with its slow-paced composition that makes a great finish of the EP.

What can I say, I love the sound of otom's music. This thick shoegaze and dreamy atmosphere is what I look for in this genre. I hope for a longer album by the Japanese soon! The single, together with an alternate version cost 3 EUR (300 JPY).

Re-written song from the debut album by the Seattle-based project whose motto says "Dance like the world is on fire. Because it is". Synth-pop shoegaze in which, what unusual for the musician, there is more romance than nihilist atmosphere. The single costs what you pay for it.

Shallowdive - Shallowdive (2018) PL

Shallowdive inspirują się całą gamą muzycznych gatunków: od hardcore'u po indie pop, a spotykają się one na tle "głośnej, unurzanej w reverbach ścianie gitarowego dźwięku". Ta wypadkowa rodzi więc shoegaze'ową muzykę,  a jest ona naprawdę bardzo udana. Sprawdzić to można na zeszłorocznej EP-ce Shallowdive.

Oczywiście nazwa zespołu rodzi oczywiste shoegaze'owe skojarzenia, jednak jeśli z jakąś legendą gatunku miałbym Amerykanów porównywać, byłby to nie Slowdive a RIDE. To właśnie Anglicy wydają się być wzorem dla brzmienia Shallowdive, nie tylko jeśli chodzi o strukturę utworów, ale również melodie i samo brzmienie gitar. Bez wątpienia jest to bardzo słuszna inspiracja, a słychać ją zwłaszcza w Rain Comes Down, który spokojnie mógłby się znaleźć na kultowym Nowhere.

Aspektem, który z kolei zbliża zespół do Slowdive jest damski wokal pomagający męskiemu i dodający całości eteryczności. Jednak największą zaletą albumu jest ten RIDE-owski sznyt łączący przebojowe, gitarowe melodie i chóralny wokal, Shallowdive mają bardzo dobry obiekt inspiracji.

Shallowdive - Shallowdive (2018) EN

Shallowdive are inspired by te whole spectre of genres: from hardcore up to indie pop, and those genres meet behind the "loud, reverb drenched, wall of guitar sound". This combination gives birth to shoegaze music that is indeed a good one. You can check on the last year's EP called simply Shallowdive.

Of course, the band's name makes obvious shoegaze associations, but if I was to compare the Americans to some legend of the genre, it would be RIDE rather than Slowdive. The English seem to be the main inspiration for Shallowdive's music, not only in the way they compose their songs, but also with melodies and guitar sounds. Absolutely a righteous inspiration and it's seen most noticeably in Rain Comes Down that could be a part of the legendary Nowhere, easy.

The aspect making the band closer to Slowdive though is the female backing vocals helping the male one and adding to the music's airiness. But the best thing about the album is clearly the RIDE-esque vibe combining the catchy guitar melodies and collective vocals, Shallowdive made a good inspiration choice.

Związki Maillarda - Cyrk (2018) EN

Związki Maillarda make instrumental music that escapes most of the labeling attempts, but if you really want to, you can call it guitar experiments spiced by a "pinch of post-rock and a touch of psychedelia". That's how their debut EP called Cyrk (Circuss) was created and released in December.

This is not the only thing that distinguishes the Poles from other bands, as they state, another thing is "the way of working. Związki Maillarda function on quite loose basis, they make new tracks according to their own needs, play whatever they like at the moment and never know what they will sound like in the end". This improvisation-based approach makes the Wrocław-based band's music sound a lot like jamming jazz that from time to time gets heavier and louder (especially in the brilliant Pangea and sometimes they also use some impressive aspects of electronic music, as those in Praski metronom ("Prague Metronome")). This impression is only deepened by the guest appearance by Jan Szmajda playing a trombone.

The most important thing though is that it definitely shows how much fun the musicians have from creating their music this way. If I deciphered their name correctly, it only proves that as Maillard reactions are responsible for creating the taste of such entertainment meals as chips, beer and chocolate. Important and joyful.

Związki Maillarda - Cyrk (2018) PL

Związki Maillarda tworzą instrumentalną muzykę wymykającą się wielu klasyfikacjom, można starać się ją ogarnąć słowami gitarowe eksperymenty doprawione "szczyptą post-rocka i odrobiną psychedelii". Tak powstał ich debiutancki LP zatytułowany Cyrk, który mia swoją premierę w grudniu.

Nie jest to jedyne, co odróżnia Polaków od innych zespołów, bo jak sami mówią inny ważnym czynnikiem "jest jej sposób działania. Związki Maillarda działają na dość luźnych zasadach - nowe utwory tworzą w zależności od własnych potrzeb, grają to, co im się w danej chwili podoba i nigdy nie wiedzą, jak ostatecznie będą brzmieć". To improwizacyjne podejście sprawia, że w muzyce Wrocławian wiele jest z jammującego jazzu, który tylko od czasu do czasu wrzuca cięższy i głośniejszy bieg (znakomicie robi to m.in. Pangea, a czasem do głosu dochodzą nawet efektowne zabiegi rodem z muzyki elektronicznej jak te w Praskim metronomie). Do tego wrażenia dokłada się też gościnny udział Jana Szymajdy na puzonie.

Przede wszystkim jednak, wyraźnie słychać jaką frajdę sprawia artystom tworzenie muzyki w ten sposób. Jeśli dobrze rozszyfrowałem nazwę to ona tylko to potwierdza, bo reakcje Maillarda odpowiadają za smak takich rozrywkowych rzeczy jak frytki, piwo i czekolada. Ważne i dające sporo radości.

iwantsummer to zespół z Sankt Petersburga grający gitarowy post-rock, ale nie bojący się używać do opisywania swojej muzyki również słowa "dance". Jak ma się to w praktyce? Najlepiej sprawdzić wydany pod koniec grudnia album Firefly.

Motywem przewodnim krążka jest baśniowość, do której nawiązuje nie tylko przestylizowana okładka, ale również tytuły utworów, w tym pierwszy, dzięki któremu album zaczyna się słowami "pewnego razu, daleko stąd", a kolejne opowiadają całą historię świetlika. 

Rosyjskie trio nie waha się tworzyć muzyki epickiej i bardzo wyrazistej. Stąd bardzo duży udział elektroniki i bardzo urokliwych klawiszy, a to przeciwstawiają potężnym, epickim gitarom tworząc odpowiednio odrealniony nastrój. Zdecydowanie najbardziej baśniowo brzmi tytułowy Firefly, a to dzięki udziałowi chóralnych śpiewów, które sprawiają, że jest to bez wątpienia najciekawszy kawałek na płycie.

iwantsummer - Firefly (2018) EN

iwantsummer is a Sankt Petersburg-based guitar post-rock band who are not afraid to add "dance" when describing their music. How does it work in practice? Best to check on the December album called Firefly.

The main motive of the album are fairy-tales that is present not only in the overstylezed cover art, but also the song titles that make one whole story about a firefly, which is appropriately started with "once upon a time".

The Russian trio is ready to make music that is both epic and very much clear-cut. That's why there's so much electronics and key-related elements there, the elements that are balanced by overpowered, epic guitars introducing an appropriate, unreal atmosphere. The most fairy tales-esque sound is reached in the title Firefly, mostly thanks to the choir-like vocals, making it also the ost interesting track on the album.

Diagonal - You Are Free (2018) EN

The Chicago-based Diagonal is a band that found out their own path through the music realm of shoegaze thanks to, as they state, "melding reverb soaked shoegaze with a subtle dose of '80s pop & '60s psychedelia". What it sounds like can be checked on the December EP by the Americans.

And so the first that draws the listener's attention is the expressive vocal by Andy Ryan, that is certainly closer to the classics from before a few decades than to shoegaze whispers. But thanks to that, Diagonal's music has less of the oneiric and more of the psychedelic vibe that's clearly best heard in Wise Mary. On the other hand, the withdrawn, a bit dim guitars together with the rest of the music create this dense background that is surely the shoegaze heritage. Also here however, it is modified and with some retro lifting due to the tracks compositions of the 80s. This combination is intriguing and refreshing, it is absolutely worth giving chance to the psychedelic oneirism from Chicago.

Diagonal - You Are Free (2018) PL

Chicagowski Diagonal to zespół, który wymyślił dla siebie swoją drogę przez muzyczną krainę shoegaze'u dzięki, jak mówią, "łączeniu soczystego shoegaze'u z subtelną dozą popu z lat 80. i psychodelią z lat 60.". Jak to brzmi sprawdzić można na grudniowej EP-ce Amerykanów.

I tak pierwsze, co rzuca się w uszy to ekspresyjny wokal Andy'ego Ryana, któremu zdecydowanie bliżej do klasyki sprzed kilkudziesięciu lat niż do shoegaze'owych szeptów. Dzięki temu jednak muzyka Diagonal ma w sobie mniej oniryczności, a więcej psychodelicznego sznytu, który zdecydowanie najlepiej brzmi w Wise Mary.  Z drugiej strony wycofane, trochę przygaszone gitary tworzące z resztą muzyki gęste tło to element shoegaze'u. Także tutaj jednak, jest on zmodyfikowany i poddany retro liftingowi dzięki wyraźnymi inspiracjami latami 80. w sposobie komponowania utworów. Takie połączenie jest intrygujące i szalenie odświeżające, warto dać szansę temu psychodelicznemu oniryzmowi z Chicago.

Beyond The Stars - Opus 9 (2018) PL

Jednoosobowy projekt z Rosji, Beyond The Stars to muzyka depresyjna i w swoim smutku piękna.

Kluczowy dla muzyki artysty jest cytat z rumuńskiego filozofa Emila Ciorana "istnieje też inna, melancholia podszywająca każdy nasz wybuch wesołości, towarzysząca nam wszędzie, nie zostawiająca nas samemu nawet na jedną chwilę". Album to trzy kawałki, ale zwłaszcza część druga to monumentalna, 40-minutowa symfonia smutku. Najpiękniej chyba brzmią jednak delikatne klawisze w części pierwszej. Niemniej takie wybieranie mija się z celem, album Rosjanina tworzy jedną, przygnębiająco fantastyczną całość i tak należy go też odbierać.

Beyond The Stars - Opus 9 (2018) EN

One person project from Russia, Beyond The Stars makes some depressive music that in its sadness becomes beautiful.

The key idea for the artist's music is shown in the quote from the Romanian philosopher Emil Cioran: "there exists another kind, a melancholy underlying our very outbursts of gaiety and accompanying us everywhere, without leaving us alone for a single moment". The album includes three tracks, but especially the second one, monumental 40-minutes one creates a real symphony of sadness. The most beautiful one on the other hand would be the first track with its wonderful keys. This kind of picking the best ones has little sense here though, the Russian's album makes one, dishearteningly fantastic whole and should be perceived as such.
