Withered Witch - Infinite Void (2021)

A new thing from Texas. This is one of the best quality very heavy albums I heard this year. The band you can find next to nothing about in the Internet, seem to be debuting now with an EP called Infinite Void.

In their tracks, the Americans make the best of metal music genres, post-metal atmosphere and stoner rock's heaviness. You can feel the loudness with all of your body's cells and it does feel phenomenal. The post-metal pace is slow but also inevitable, emanating this powerfulness that is typical for epic nature phenomena. Scary, yes, but also mesmerizingly beautiful and fascinating. This is very tangible especially in Grave Moss, the way the vocals are distorted here evokes some horror-like, primal fears inside you. The way the band combine a lot of things from a lot of genres, as well as the free form and inclinations to experimenting (within a genre's limits) makes me think of this music as psychedelic metal. And I enjoy every second of it.

Who Dies in Siberian Slush - Intimate Death Experience (2018) EN

The band's label is clear: "Truly Russian Funeral Doom Death" as it is stated on Bandcamp with description that it means music that is "majestic and sad". You can hear it on the band's third LP called Intimate Death Experience.

Long, slow and absolutely sad tracks are inspired by the culture and nature of Russia, thus the reference to the eastern wilderness in the band's name and a song devoted to Boris Kustodiev, a Russian painter. This expression of Russianness is the main aim of the project. What is it characterized with? Certainly the heaviness and rawness of guitars combined with fragments full of beautiful keys.

Another matter is the vocal that is extremely, even for metal, deep. This is why it fits the music so well, but also makes it capable of inspiring fear, awe and sadness in audience, all at once (as it is done in the brilliant Remembrance).

Labelka na muzykę zespołu jest "jasna": "Truly Russian Funeral Doom Death", jak jest napisane na Bandcampie po czym autor tekstu wyjaśnia, że oznacza to muzykę, która jest "majestatyczna i smutna". Można ją usłyszeć na trzecim długograjacym albumie moskwian: Intimate Death Experience.

Długie, powolne i niezwykle smutne utwory zespołu inspirowane są kulturą i środowiskiem naturalnym Rosji, stąd z pewnością odwołania do dzikich ostępów wschodniej części kraju w nazwie projektu, czy też utwór poświęcony Borysowi Kustodijewowi, rosyjskiemu malarzowi. To właśnie pokazanie tej rosyjskości w swojej muzyce jest nadrzędnym celem zespołu. Czym się ona charakteryzuje? Z pewnością jest to ciężar gitar i ich surowość połączona z fragmentami pełnymi piękna i klawiszy.

Osobną kwestią jest wokal, który charakteryzuje się niezwykłą, nawet jak na metal, głębią. Dzięki temu nie tylko brzmi właściwie dla takiej muzyki, przede wszystkim wyzwala w słuchaczach strach, zachwyt i smutek w jednym (choćby w znakomitym Remembrance).

Future Usses - The Existential Hunting (2018) EN

The Existential Hunting in theory is the debut album by the Californians, but the band consists of experienced musicians led by Sacha Dunable who played in projects such as Intronaut or Bereft. Their first album is filled with heavy, masculine post-rock, amplifying the styles of the aforementioned bands.

From the beginning of the album we are being attacked by heavy, tearing , but also slow sounds. It was really well said in the album's promo materials that they are: "combining the slow-motion crushing power of doom with the atmosphere and dense harmonic tendencies of Intronaut". The pace doesn't change a lot whether it is the monstrous, long-distance What Is Anything, or shorter and more intense pieces such as Absolute Zero.

It gets more psychedelic in Make Flowers. Besides the cut in half flow of the music, the band give us their unclear, ridiculously distorted vocal (I guess it's vocal) sounding as if taken straight out of a horror movie, and it fits so well. That's why it's a shame that it's only a one time experiment as the band soon comes back to their already established, still very good, rhythm.

Future Usses - The Existential Hunting (2018) PL

The Existential Hunting jest nominalnie debiutem Kalifornijczyków, jednak zespół składa się z doswiadczonych muzyków, a jego lider Sacha Dunable grał w takich zespołach jak Intronaut, czy Bereft. Ich pierwsza wspólna płyta wypełniona jest twardym, męskim post-rockiem, powielając i powiększając style wspomnianych zespołów.

Od samego początku płyty atakują nas ciężkie, szarpiące, ale też powolne gitarowe dźwięki. Bardzo trafnie ujęto to w promo płyty pisząc o "łączeniu miażdżącej siły doomu ujętej w slow-motion z atmosferą i gęstymi harmonicznymi tendencjami Intronaut". Tempo niewiele się zmienia , czy to w monstrualnym, długo rozwijającym się What Is Anything, czy w krótszych i bardziej intensywnych kawałkach jak Absolute Zero.

Bardziej psychodelicznie robi się w Make Flowers. Poza pozrywanymi melodiami zespół prezentuje mało czytelny, absurdalnie zniekształcony wokal (raczej wokal) brzmiący jak wyjęty z horroru, co pasuje do zespołu wyśmienicie. Tym bardziej szkoda, że to tylko jednorazowy eksperyment, a muzyka zespołu wraca po chwili do swojego wcześniejszego, wciąż niezwykle interesującego zresztą, rytmu.

Hemelbestormer - A Ring of Blue Light (2018) EN

Wall of overpowering, almost brutal sound of guitars raw like winter in mountains, this is what the Belgian Hemelbestormer is the best in. In Dutch, their name signifies those, who "storm heavens" with their revolutionary ideas, their new album's cover art shows the heavens being stormed by a high mountaintop and their music is filled with storming, high-quality post-metal.

The album consists of a handful of long, epic compositions masticating with guitar noise but also letting the audience fall in love with this feeling and catch a breath in those sparse moments of peace. The latter is present for example in "Clusters", and the strength is needed to survive another incoming doses of the instrumental blizzard. There so much of this noise, no wonder that it is space that is the leitmotif of the album, space meaning something the scale of which overpowers even the strongest of us.

The musicians prove that noise can be served in various ways, like a raw dose of guitars ("Eight Billion Stars") or guitars supported by strong, almost danceable rhythm ("Towards the Nebula") or preceded by a tension-building intro ("Redshift"). They compare being on their concerts to being sucked in by a black hole. This year, some lucky bastards could taste the feeling during Dunk! Festival among others.

Hemelbestormer - A Ring of Blue Light (2018) PL

Ściana przygniatającego, niemal brutalnego dźwięku surowych jak zima w górach gitarowego dźwięku, w tym specjalizuje się belgijskie Hemelbestormer. W języku niderlandzkim ich nazwa oznacza tych, którzy rewolucyjnymi pomysłami "szturmują niebo", na okładce ich nowego albumu niebo szturmowane jest przez wysoki szczyt a w muzyce przez wysoką jakość post-metalu.

Płytę tworzy garść długich, epickich kompozycji miażdżących gitarowym hałasem ale też pozwalających rozkoszować się tym uczuciem i nabierać oddechu w nielicznych chwilach spokoju. Taką jest na przykład "Clusters", a siły potrzebne są by przetrwać kolejne dawki instrumentalnej zawieruchy. Tej jest dużo, nic dziwnego, że motywem przewodnim płyty jest kosmos, coś, czego skala potrafi przygnieść najmocniejszych z nas.

Muzycy zespołu udowadniają, że hałas potrafią serwować na rozmaite sposoby, jako surowa dawka gitar ("Eight Billion Stars") ale też wspomożona solidnym, niemal tanecznym rytmem ("Towards the Nebula") czy w końcu poprzedzone budującym napięcie intrem ("Redshift"). Sami porównują uczestnictwo w swoich koncertach do bycia wessanym przez czarną dziurę. W tym roku szczęśliwcy mogli się tak poczuć między innymi na Dunk! Festivalu.
