Tokyo Shoegazer - Remains (2026)

I love how certain Japanese projects use their names to clearly state what to expect from their music. Tokyo Shoegazer play shoegaze. And are from Tokyo. 'nuff said. This makes it all about music and the classic noisy but airy gaze here proves it can work so well on its own. Also, somehow this is another Japanese band with a song about flowers, but unlike MONO, they stick to one track only.

Founded by Hiroshi Sasabuchi in 2010, the band has a rich history that includes a hiatus period and a comeback, 6 albums with two critically acclaimed at RateYourMusic database and many live gigs in Asia. The sound of their music is something most of us would call a "classic shoegaze": the noisy and the fuzzy are indeed noisy and fuzzy, the sound quality is not as important as the loudness and, finally, Kyoko Sahara's vocals are extremely, soothingly airy. What else do you want from a shoegaze album?

Well, I guess you could expect some catchy melodies, but the Japanese deliver here as well: the ear-catching riffs in Wisteria are cool but my favourite track has to be Vega with its dreamy melodies meeting the heaviest guitars of the album at the end and this kind of contrast is what does it for me. What a beauty.

LOLOET - Circle of Echoes (2026)

When I listened to this album, I didn't know the story around it. But apparently LOLOET is a project centred around Ayaka Wada, a j-pop singer and an idol known from girlsband Angerme, who decided to create... ambient pop? How cool is that?!  What's more important, the effects are fascinating: the slowcore, jazzy and experimental pop feels both artsy and fun to listen to. This February, the band released their debut album and it's definitely worth checking out.

Wada says she wanted to make music "that resembles the paintings of Mark Rothko" (yes, those bright and colourful minimalist and abstract pieces) and I... don't see it. I mean the abstraction is certainly there, but this music is far from minimalism. But it's very, very possible I don't focus on the right thing, I have no idea about paintings. My point is that music here is very, very rich. Yes, it may start as ambient background, but it quickly evolves into jazzy and neoclassical structures that ripple around and change shapes all the time while Wada's soft and airy vocals charm their way into the listeners' hearts.

It's such a fascinating journey this album: you can't guess what's going to happen next. Some compositions are vocalless and they are magical too (I'm looking at you, les yeux) and some become a poetry reading that touches upon important, sociopolitical themes. The thing that makes this music special is also the use of trumpet sounds: Chan keng's doing what he can to add this trumpet charisma to the compositions without overwhelming the listener, which I really appreciate.

Takahiro Kido - INSOMNIA (2025)

The artists around the Japanese Ricco Label have inspired me more or less from the beginning of this blog. Anoice, Mizu Amane, Tokyo Ambient Collective they all appeared here and for a good reason: the label is basically a quality stamp for music revolving around neoclassical and ambient soundscapes. And around Takahiro Kido himself.

A member of all of the above and a founder of the label comes back to releasing music under his name, after almost a decade since the last album, "The New World". And it's a great thing he does so. The music on the album is lead by piano keys, but a great deal of the fantastic atmosphere is created by string instruments (violins, violas, and cellos) played by the members of Anoice. There is a certain drama felt in the compositions, the spine-thrilling and unnerving at times passages are far from the relaxing or melancholic atmosphere often associated with neoclassical music. This time, it keeps the heart beating and the mind wondering what'll happen next.

And it's not a surprise since the album was inspired by insomnia, as suggested by its title. It is focused on a simply, yet captivating question: "Where is the boundary between reality and dream" which people suffering from this sleeping disorder may need to ask themselves more often then not. It also leads to the atmosphere, unnerving as I said but also dreamy and airy. Given the artist's background, it won't be a very novel thought that this music is basically a movie score without the movie, but it really describes it so well.

Tomoyoshi Date - 438Hz As It Is, As You Are [​あ​る​が​ま​ま​、​あ​な​た​の​ま​ま​に​] (2022)

Although not that long ago Tomoyoshi Date was present on this blog with an album created together with Stijn Huwels, last year's 438Hz As It Is, As You Are [​あ​る​が​ま​ま​、​あ​な​た​の​ま​ま​に​] is only his third solo album since 2008. 

The music here is built upon the beautiful, though not extremely melodic sounds of piano keys. This is more an ambient recording played on a real instrument than your average neoclassical piece. The compositions are filled with delicate noise and subtle fuzziness, but the piano is definitely the main player here. This slow, moody music is a real band-aid on a bruised soul, but it was created with a particularly interesting idea in mind, as the artist describes, it's meant to have "the listener adjust the pitch at the desired speed according to the mood and frequency of [them] at that time". For me, it works at the melancholy level.

Pjusk & Chihei Hatakeyama - Svaberg (2022)

Jostein Dahl Gjelsvik aka Pjusk comes from Norway and creates some perfectly moody soundscapes. Especially when he can enjoy the cooperation with the iconic Chihei Hatakeyama as it is on their album called Svaberg.

Their music feels both warm and very dark. No wonder that half of the track titles contain the word "mørke" which translates from Norwegian to "dark". The soundscapes are dense and overwhelming, but also very warm and welcoming. It is not the unnerving dark ambient industrial music; the focus is set on beauty and the ability to spark a self-reflective moment in the listeners. The good news for the fans is that Gjelsvik already announced that there's more material coming from the duo.

COLLAPSE - BLACK SHEEP IS STILL DREAMING (2022)

Although the Japanese COLLAPSE make music for almost a decade now, this year's BLACK SHEEP IS STILL DREAMING is their long playing debut. I posted about their EP three years ago and I still think it's one of the best shoegaze stuff that comes from Asia.

"Whispering voices shimmering sweetly in the overwhelming roaring sea" - this is how the band introduce themselves and I couldn't find a better description of their music. The roaring and particularly noisy guitars fight against the whispering vocals of Shoko. I know that combining the very noisy music with extremely soothing and delicate female vocals is something the Asian shoegaze is known for, but I feel like COLLAPSE do that even more. In GARDEN, the complex noise in the backgrounds is suppressed by the airiness of the vocals but there are moments the guitars are unleashed, ready to wreck havoc. But they are no match for what's happening in SYRUP. This is the flag track of the noisy side of the band. The melancholic vibes provided by Shoko are only strengthened in tracks where they are accompanied by violins or uber sweet sounds of glockenspiel as in BIRTHLIGHT. They band's sound is very versatile while all the time aiming for the heavy melancholia kind of atmosphere.

masato abe - circulation (2022)

Masato Abe released his second album, Flew Out from Birth, two years ago and stole my attention with his atmospheric and airy soundscapes. This year he's back with some more music released on the new album called circulation.

The Japanese artist's music is based on moody ambient soundscapes that are helped by neoclassical elements to result in an extremely ethereal blend of genres. The many layers stack on each other, creating a dense and thick ambient haze on top of which occasional piano sounds feel like the most beautiful thing in the whole universe. The soundscapes here have heavy introspective abilities that can help you focus on the feelings they evoke - most probably calm awe with traces of melancholia.

hinako omori - a journey… (2022)

Back in March, Hinako Omori released her debut album a journey... and what a journey it takes the audience for! Or stream of consciousness as the artist suggests. The release is a perfect example of the kind of music that is meant for soothing emotions and making the listener's life simply better.

There's something special about the East Asian approach to ghost ambient pop; the artists like Green Horizon, Ichiko Aoba or everyone at Ricco Label prove it time after time. Omori is no exception here. Although residing in UK, she was born in Japan and must have taken with her some of this ghostly beauty and put it onto the debut album. It "combines inner healing and natural landscapes into in an immersive cartography of the mind in ambient electronics" - and the word "landscapes" is not a coincidence here, Omori hides tons of field recordings within the drone compositions, making them alive and filled with the primal stress relief abilities. The album really feels like a walk through a forest during a warm, summer night and I love it. 

And there's another focus point of the artist as she presents interest in the healing properties of sounds. This is an album engineered to heal and make your life easier, even if for a moment. If it's not for the particular frequencies Omori uses, it's certainly true for her soothing vocals - the gems of airy and ethereal singing, often sounding like extremely intimate whispers flying directly into your ear and mind. Subtle melodies flow effortlessly through the air; any listener is bound to catch themselves daydreaming very quickly.

re​:​lapse - re​:​lapse II​.​ep (2022)

The Tokyo-based outfit re:lapse started making their music back in 2019 and since then released two EPs. The newest one, entitled as simply as it could be, is a fascinating and very dreamy take on the guitar-based dream pop.

The main characteristics of the Japanese's music must be the super airy and very sweet vocals by Kurage - there's tons of dispersing effects and ethereal backing vocals here and it couldn't sound better for a dream pop release. The second thing are very obvious and well-audible guitars that feel heavier and coarser than it usually is for such an airy music. But as they are withdrawn and hidden in the noisy backgrounds, they serve as a kind of spice that makes the whole compositions stand out from the ethereal blend. The ethereality of the album is even more striking thanks to the slower pace of the music that makes it so easy to get sucked into the dreamy landscapes as envisioned by the band.

A german duo consisting of Emanuel Oropesa and Sebastian Balk released their third, slightly longer single and filled it with dark and massive guitar post-rock. The quality of their music is clear and the ability to crush the audience with sounds - wort admiring. The two songs cost 5 EUR.

Minaxi - The Deep Blue Sea Conveys Your Love

Although they describe themselves as alternative rock band, the new single from the Americans from Minaxi is mostly about dreamy atmosphere and pop's catchiness. Also the remix made by Simon Scott shows vibes of utter ethereality and I dig it. The single costs 3 USD.

Distorted vocals and slow beats, extremely ethereal atmosphere and melodies. The Washington-based artist brings some very modern-sounding electronica meeting dreamy slowcore in his new single. Great tunes. Two tracks cost 7 USD.

Tukisigure - Inori 

The name of the Japanese project translates to "drizzling rain on a moonlit night" and fittingly, the artist presents music that is both ethereal and post-rock-heavy. The first track from them shows some technical difficulties but still promises some great music. The single costs whatever you want to pay.

Optloquat - From the Shallow (2021)

There has been an excess of the East Asian airy music recently and it doesn't seem to stop. The next one on the table is the Japanese Optloquat. Their loud, shoegazing music gives so much of the ethereal kind of energy, so much needed in the cloudy autumn times. They provided it on their debut LP album called From the Shallow.

The vocals here don't sound very airy per se, their dreamy abilities lay in the fact that they are hidden under the music and start in a very, very subtle way (even though they are very melodic). Even when the vocalist sounds more rock-like or sometimes even as if he was almost screaming (in 紡ぐ日々 where he sings in Japanese and it weirdly sound like an anime series' intro song), it still is lost under the overwhelming guitar music. It is very loud, very noisy and very energetic. The artists make it very rock-like but sometimes there's more nuance to it, forcing the music to go in a more dream-pop direction (like in Lapes). Still, it's always filled with the psychedelic energy and flow that makes the audience fall into the spiral of guitar trance; it's so well audible in Imaginary Host: ridiculously mesmerizing and catchy song. Pure, psychedelic fun.

Lovewillsaveus - Pink (2021)

There is so little you can learn about this band except for the fact that they are from Japan and started making music this year. Pink is already their second EP and you can surely feel that there's some top-notch ethereal potential here.

Their name and the album's cover art really suggest that they play some ethereal shoegaze/dream pop music. And in a way it's true, but, like ソーベ I posted recently about, they don't include any vocals in their music. Otherwise, it sounds very shoegaze-like: the good quality of overwhelming guitar noise, slow but steady pace, subtle changes of melodies as if for choruses that never got born. I really wish there was some super airy, Asian-style female vocals on top of that, the EP would be such a great debut. It still is good but it just hits differently. Judging by the frequency of EPs getting released, we won't have to wait for new material from the Japanese for long though.

Anoice - The Hidden Forest (2021)

It's no surprise for anyone reading this blog that I'm a fan of everything that comes out from the Japanese Ricco label. And my special feelings go to the label's artistic collective Anoice. After two other releases already appearing here, it's time for the band's sixth long play called The Hidden Forest.

And just as the title, as well as our experience with the previous releases, suggest - the music here is beautiful, airy and moody. There's hardly many music projects out there that can compete with the level of atmospheric vibes with the Japanese, that's certain. The tones here can be ethereally light and gloomily dark and they can be experienced almost simultaneously and no, it's not impossible. It first happens in a perfect day for a funeral, a track the title of which already suggests it, with the extremely beautiful strings filling souls with calmness and the last notes damaging it with unnerving anxiety. The album goes from the barely audible neoclassical and ambient beauty up to the post-rock-like might wherever it's necessary.

Due to the pandemics, the creative process for the release took longer than usually but perhaps that's why the album feels so thoroughly thought-through with its cinematic properties making me think that each song was prepared for a particular, detailed scene. Perhaps not for a movie but for lives of each of us. In reality, the songs were inspired by Naoko Okada's paintings (one of them is featured as the cover art too). Those show the powerful nature and its forces shown through fantasy/fairy-tale-like lenses and I find it very suitable for Anoice's music indeed. This nature is also present in the music itself with the multitude of field recordings making the backgrounds of those captivating compositions.

MONO - Pilgrimage of the Soul (2021)

Even people not very much interested in post-rock music usually know who MONO are. The Japanese band is one of the best recognizable one within the genre and there's little point in explaining who they are here. However, I couldn't not mention their new album Pilgrimage of the Soul on the blog, it's too big of an event this year to skip it.

MONO have also one of the most recognizable and characteristic sounds in the post-rock community. It's easy to guess you are listening to the Japanese band when you here the long compositions that usually slowly grow in power to have the whole might finally released on the listener while at the same time can be shockingly beautiful thanks to the use of piano and string instruments. They have also this peculiar vibe of being slightly lo-fi - and this is the only thing I don't like about their music. I'd rather enjoy their sound in the highest quality possible. Still, their music is nothing less than phenomenal and on the new album they only prove it for the 11th time. 

It starts with a real earthquake in the rapid audio storm in Riptide and its continuation in Imperfect Things only to die down to the subtlest levels in Heaven in a Wild Flower. This shows how versatile the band is, what a multitude of emotions they can express with sound on a single album and even within a single track, especially well-audible in the album's longest Hold Infinity in the Palm of Your Hand. And everything they do feels so massive and crushingly important, no wonder every piece of new music from MONO makes me excited.

Hiroco.M - Still (2021)

Hiroko Murakami creates her music as Hirocco.M and has been releasing singles all over the last year. There's still no longer album but this year's super short EP called Still gives us the taste of what it will be sometime in the future.

Released by Moderna Records, the EP is filled with the most impressive piano-based beauty. The short compositions are like tiny pictures with their own structures and thoughts but short and illusive. This may be the strength of the release: the short tracks make you want to focus more and appreciate them while they last. And it's absolutely worth doing so, not only for the piano music fans. Still the track, but perhaps the whole album as well, was meant to catch the feeling of 2020's stagnation, as the artist states: "yet calm and somehow uneventful, the lack of change created a yearning for excitement, for meeting loved ones and friends I could not. Still, stalled, stuck". If this is a result of this year, perhaps it had its brighter sides.

Piana - Raula (2021)

I'm not gonna lie, Naoko Sasaki a.k.a. Piana's albums were very important to me when I was younger, and her Ephemeral basically made me fall into dream pop while Muse is one of the best albums I know in general. She was silent for 7 years but now the Japanese artist is back with a long and beautifully airy album Raula.

Very fittingly, the album's title basically means humming in Icelandic, the language and culture that seems to have some influence over the artist's last work. The album "moves through a quiet space, then to a prologue, brimming with hope, which opens up a fantasy adventure story feel" which is helped by the fact that Piana's humming-like airy vocals are in fact singing lyrics written in imaginary language that makes it possible for the listeners to "imagine an abstract, beautiful fantasy world, no matter what country they are from". Sounds like something very well-known and also very Icelandic.

The music around the vocals is extremely airy as well with the omnipresent neoclassical elements (most importantly violins by Atowa Yuri) and beautiful piano keys by Hiromi Kurosaki all over the place. But at the same time, it's not as innocent as I remember it to be, with quite invasive sounds of drums (as in Filica) and the general massively monumental vibes that came from the fascination for medieval and spiritual music. Most of the album though consists of short piano-based beautiful ballads. Also, North totally sounds like a Christmas carol, even feels weird to listen to it now.

SPOOL - cyan / amber (2020)

I've always been reluctant to say there's something like Japanese dream pop/shoegaze subgenre, but in fact, the bands playing ethereal pop from Japan and the Orient tend to have their unique sound. The Japanese SPOOL are great example here and as the all-female band released their second album called cyan / amber, I am more and more convinced.

It is sung in Japanese and maybe it's part of the unique vibes, together with the rather high-pitched, Anime-like (sorry for narrow cultural perspective) vocals provided by Ayumi Kobayashi, that, at the beginning at least, are more lively and carefree than moody and atmospheric. But that's not a problem with the tweepop, lo-fi dream pop guitar arrangements that, together with the omnipresent ethereal backing vocals, take care of the dreamy part of the project. When also vocals get to this level of ethereality, as in Suicide Girl or in my favourite ghost, the dream pop-ish ecstatic state is way closer and it feels so great. 

ghost is actually special as, being the longest one, shows how well the musicians handle the mesmerizing, psychedelic passages if they give themselves a bit more time and space in a track. The whole album makes an almost-40-minutes-long dreamy trip lead by the beautiful and chic vocals, cute and catchy.

RiLF - My Beloved Farewell (2020) EN

RiLF just released their new album, only a second one although it's hard to believe. Mighty dose of airy and dense dream pop that fits perfectly the autumn weather and the atmosphere of the times. Let's then listen to the great My Beloved Farewell together.

Only now have I figured that the name of the band translates to Ricco Label and Friends. And of course, looking back at this, it was pretty obvious. The artists releasing their music within the label often mix in various collaborations, no wonder there's a separate moniker for them. Here it's Calu together with the Anoice duo. The new album gathers singles published in recent years (like Soraninaru that is with us since June'19) into one, fog-filled composition. From the very beginning we are joined by extremely airy vocals of Yuka Murata combined with the most dream pop things like strings, mesmerizing guitars, light melodies.

All of this sounds great in the dream pop archetypes Never Ending Dream or Soraninaru, while sometimes turn to louder and noisier Count4 or in the slowly but surely developing Someday We Will Find. It has to be remembered though that whatever is going on in the Japanese's music, the foreground is always booked fot the dream pop atmosphere. And this is what we love RiLF and the whole label for.

[.que] - And Inside (2020) EN

Nao Kakimoto, known as [que.] is a Japanese artist who within the sound in silence label released the second album after Wonderland from 2017 at the beginning of the last summer. Besides that, he's done many other ones, longer, shorter, ad music and whatever you can imagine. Time to make up with the album and have a listen.

His music makes an exceptionally airy approach to electronic sounds slightly livelier than ambient but still similarly atmospheric. The album begins with the piano keys-based intro but we are quickly moved to electronically enriched (both with beats and some more experimental sounds) haze and further, towards the optimist sounds of sepia. Eventually the piano keys are back in the most serious track divagate but at this point, everything is possible as the album turns into absolutely diverse and eclectic blend with electric guitar, violins, back vocals. There's pretty much everything on this album.

Koji Itoyama - I Know (2020) EN

I Know, the second long play from the Japanese ambient artist Koji Itoyama, who "creates nostalgic music that is a mixture of field recordings and electronic sounds". Super moody and very peaceful, so well fitting the beginning of autumn.

Released by the cool guys from Hidden Vibes, the album starts with the beautiful keys-filled track called Jola (which for Polish speakers sounds very familiar), that eventually drowns in some light drone. Absolutely beautiful is the next song Utopia and its barely audible vocals and even more subtle backgrounds, reminding me of Jónsi and his ambient adventures. It's similar with Kisha  while the following Perlan adds even more ethereal vibes. Actually, each and every track on the album brings awe and has to be discovered by the listeners themselves. And I can only recommend it from the deep of my heart.
