Kegaal - Pillars: Seeds of Ares (2020) EN

Already on his debut album NERATERRÆ surprised me with his love for collab with other great ambient artists. This time he became a member of a real ambient supergroup together with Gabriele Panci (New Risen Throne) and Ketil Søraker who also recently gave us a treat in the form of Taphephobia's new album. This enterprise couldn't go wrong.

As a result, Pillars: Seeds of Ares gives us a huge dose of dark ambient soundscape in the darkness of which you can easily get lost. As could have been guessed, the music here is made of a whole range of whispers, horror movies' mysterious crackling and, first of all, the pitch black soundscapes. And if for someone there's not enough of famous names here, the album hosts also the vocalist Treha Sektori and another artist I adore - Visions from Berlin. Wonderful combo.

NERATERRÆ już na debiutanckiej płycie zaskoczył zamiłowaniem do kooperacji z innymi znakomitymi artystami ambientowymi. Tym razem wszedł w skład prawdziwej supergrupy tego gatunku wraz z Gabriele Panci (New Risen Throne) i Ketil Søraker, który niedawno przecież uraczył nas nową płytą w ramach projektu Taphephobia. To nie mogło się nie udać.

W rezultacie na Pillars: Seeds of Ares mamy więc potężną dawkę mrocznego ambientowego soundscape'u, w którym ciemność bardzo trudno czymkolwiek rozproszyć. Tak jak należało się spodziewać mamy do czynienia z całym arsenałem szeptów, tajemnych trzasków rodem z horrorów i przede wszystkim soundscape'ów czarnych choć oko wykol. A jeśli komuś za mało głośnych nazwisk to na płycie udzielają się również wokalistka Treha Sektori i kolejny artysta, którego bardzo cenię - Visions z Berlina. Znakomite połączenie.

NERATERRÆ - Scenes from the Sublime (2020) EN

A year ago the Italian artist Alessio Antoni shocked the ambient world with his debut album where he gathered a lot of offstream stars of the genre in impressive collaborations. When it seemed that such a good album would be difficult to top, his project NERATERRÆ and the Berlin-based label Cyclic Law released the album called Scenes from the Sublime.

Just as he did before, Antoni invited some important for ambient names from all over the world. And so we have here Martin Stürtzer a.k.a. Phelios, the Dødsmaskin duo, Slovakian Phragments, Mount Shrine from Brazil, the great Mohamada Rezę known as Xerxes the Dark etc, etc. A real star constellation. But it's worth mentioning that stars are also present in the list of inspirations the Italian was helped by as you can hardly not count as one names such as Hieronymus Bosch or our great painter Zdzisław Beksiński.

And the music here consists first of all of heavy, very dark ambient. In the album's opening track The Adjurer it's literally crushingly heavy. After that it may be lighter (as in Passion Domain) but it's not very often as we mostly deal with depressively gloomy soundscape, heavy like autumn skies. Different in every track but the most important things stay the same.

Rok temu włoski muzyk Alessio Antoni zaszokował scenę ambientową debiutanckim albumem zrzeszającym wiele offstreamowych gwiazd gatunku w efektownych kolaboracjach. Gdy wydawało się, że ciężko będzie tak dobry album powtórzyć, projekt NERATERRÆ i berliński label Cyclic Law wypuścili krążek Scenes from the Sublime.

I tym razem Antoni zaprosił w gości znaczące dla dark ambientu nazwiska z całego świata. Mamy więc Martina Stürtzera a.k.a. Phelios, duet Dødsmaskin, słowackie Phragments, brazylijski Mount Shrine, wspaniałego Mohamada Rezę czyli Xerxes the Dark etc, etc. Konstelacja gwiazd. Warto dodać, że te są także w inspiracjach, którymi wspomagał się Włoch bo trudno do takich nie zaliczyć chociażby Hieronima Boscha czy naszego wybitnego malarza Zdzisława Beksińskiego.

A muzyka tu to przede wszystkim ciężki, bardzo mroczny ambient. W otwierającym płytę The Adjurer ta atmosfera wręcz przygniata. Potem bywa lżej (jak w Passion Domain) ale też niezbyt często, bo głównie mamy do czynienia z depresyjnie ponurym, ciężkim jak jesienne chmury soundscape'em. W każdym utworze nieco innym, ale jego cechy szczególne się nie zmieniają.

Niezwykła historia, dla Alessio Antoniego i jego projektu NERATERRÆ to płytowy debiut, a od jakości eterycznego ambientu i zaproszonych gości może się zakręcić w głowie. The Substance of Perception to póki co zdecydowanie najlepszy przedstawiciel gatunku w tym roku.

Właśnie projekty współpracujące z Antonim na płycie przykuwają od pierwszej chwili uwagę. Bo jest tutaj Aleksiej Tegin z uznanej Phurpy i Ugasanie i, dla mnie przede wszystkim, Duncan Ritchie czyli Flowers for Bodysnatchers. Nic więc dziwnego, ze mamy do czynienia z fantastyczną jakością muzyki.

Ta rozciąga się od intymnego soundscape'u z wplecionymi samplami (Shadows of Regret) przez mroczne i niepokojące przestrzenie (To Reveal the Unseen, Becoming the Nightmare) po delikatną neoklasykę (Echoing Stars). Właśnie ten ostatni kawałek nagrany z Flowers for Bodysnatchers, a także To Reveal... z mrocznym pomrukiwaniem Tegina so zdecydowanie najjaśniejszym (metaforycznie bo naprawdę to wcale nie) punktami tej bardzo równej i dobrej płyty.

Amazing thing, for Alessio Antoni and his project called NERATERRÆ it is a debut album but the quality of the airy ambient music and the collaborating guests take the breath away. The Substance of Perception is, as for now, the very best album of this genre this year.

The projects working together with Antoni on this album are the first thing that draws attention from the very beginning. Because there is Alexey Tegin from the very universally acclaimed Phurpa and Ugasanie and, for me the mot important one, Duncan Ritchie or Flowers for Bodysnatchers. And more. No wonder we deal with such a fantastic music quality here.

The said music goes from intimate soundscapes interlaced with samples (Shadows of Regret) to dark and unsettling spaces (To Reveal the Unseen, Becoming the Nightmare) and to subtle neoclassicism (Echoing Stars). This last track, recorded with Flowers for Bodysnatchers together with To Reveal... that includes Tegin's gloomy hooting are clearly the brightest (metaphorically because they are not bright at all) fragments of the well balanced and absolutely magnificent album.
