The Deadly Affair - Visions Through the Sense of Silence (2025)

I can't believe that this is only debut from the Chilean band The Deadly Affairs! When I came across it, I was sure it's created by an experienced group and probably a bit too well-known for this blog. This is not the case, even though Visions Through the Sense of Silence makes certainly a well-made and very airy darkwave release.

The image and the vocals scream darkwave here, but the atmosphere of the music around it is far from this genre, way closer to slowcore, dream pop genres. Which, together with the backing vocals make my genre-centered mind go through some unbelievable options including ambient cold wave or ethereal post-punk. I love it. And it's ot only that, the band can create this overwhelming yet calm atmosphere that drags the audience to the ground but also feels very intimate. Like a heavy blanket made of cold wave music. And it's still not everything because they are as swift with ambiance creation as with writing catchy melodies which may sound strange, but Take My Blood is certainly a banger you hum together with the artists.

This "stark and hypnotic descent into brooding atmospheres and unrelenting tension", as it's advertised by the label, makes one of the most promising debuts of the year, regardless of the genre.

La ciencia simple - Ritmos en cruz (2022)

The Chilean band that aims at the "exploration in the crossing of rhythmic patterns immersed in atmospheres and narratives of a dramatic nature" are back on my blog. Four years after their previous release they showed an LP that confirms the quality of their psychedelic/post-rock music.

It is slower and more atmospheric than your average psychedelic rock and softer and more complex than your average post-rock. The South American outfit's music is based on a broad range of sounds from ambient-like backgrounds, through piano keys (so beautiful in Sueño azul) to Niebla's unsettling guitars in the track's finish. This is this kind of instrumental music that requires full focus and it is guaranteed to give the listener something interesting, there's simply too much going on in this music, there's too many inspirations the musicians draw from, to leave anyone indifferent to this album.

Antipoesis - AYRE (2020) EN

I imagine Chile as a country of metal and darkwave music. I probably am influenced by those few labels I follow but still, from time to time, there's a project that proves this to me again. One of those is Antipoesis.

The artist (or artists, I couldn't find it out) from South America recently released a, probably, debut alvum called AYRE and it's something to listen to. The music here consists of minimalist, dark instruments and electroics with subtle vocals. There's also a lot of darkwave here when it comes to the lo-fi quality and flatnes of the sound. So there's a lot of grinds and whizes and not too much basses but if anything, it only adds up to the atmosphere generated. Especially when in Hospedaje we also meet uncomfortable, noise add-ons making the whole thing more multi-dimensional. 

Antipoesis skillfully changes the pace, like in Roma (Acto I & II) in which delicate ambient pop neighbours with guitar, somewhat grunge, noise pop. Intelligent and interesting.

Antipoesis - AYRE (2020) PL

Chile to kraj, który jawi mi się jako zagłębie metalu i mrocznego darkwave'u. Być może bazuję swoją wiedzę na pojedynczych labelach, które akurat obserwuję, niemniej co jakiś czas się w tym przekonaniu. Antipoesis to kolejny projekt, który wpisuje się weń w jakimś stopniu.

Artystka (albo artyści, nie udało mi się ustalić) z Południowej Ameryki wydała niedawno debiutancką, jak się wydaje, płytę AYRE i jest na czym zawiesić ucho. Muzyka na niej to minimalistyczne, mroczne instrumentarium i spokojne, cichutkie wokale. Ma też dużo z darkwave'u jeśli chodzi o lo-fi'owość realizacji i płaskość dźwięku. Jest więc dużo zgrzytów, świstów a niewiele basu, natomiast jeśli już to tylko sprzyja to generowanej atmosferze. Zwłaszcza, gdy w Hospedaje dochodzą niewygodne, noise'owe wstawki dodające całości wielowymiarowości. 

Antipoesis umiejętnie żongluje tempem, tak jak w Roma (Acto I & II), gdzie bardzo delikatny ambient pop sąsiaduje z gitarowym, takim trochę grundge'owym noise popem. Inteligentne i interesujące.

Pálida - Visceral (2019) EN

Pálida is a band from Chile but there's only so much you can learn about it. It's clear that the main role is played by Felipe Flores, but this is about it. The important thing though that there's a new, short album from this project that was released January, an album with interesting music and phenomenal cover art, called Visceral.

The Chilean instrumental post-rock is filled with emotions and nostalgia, the relatively short compositions have a lot of this lo-fi aesthetics (as it is stated, the most of the materia was recorded in Felipe's house), but it's nothing that bothers you while listening. Most of the sounds here could be called traditional instrumental post-rock focused on atmosphere generation rather than guitar riffs. There's also some a bit trip-hop-ish electronics in Lascivia and synths. Of course this probably is not the sound the debutants aim for, but it's enough to appear on our radar even on such a broad music scene as the Chilean one.

Pálida to zespół z Chile, ale niewiele da się o nim dowiedzieć. Z pewnością dużą w nim rolę odgrywa Felipe Flores, ale to tyle. Tymczasem pokazał on jeszcze w styczniu krótką płytę z interesującą muzyką i fenomenalnym cover artem - Visceral.

Instrumentalny post-rock Chilijczyków przepełniony jest emocjonalnością i nostalgią, niedługie kompozycje mają w sobie sporo z lo-fi'owej estetyki (jak przyznają muzycy, większość nagrana została w domu Felipe), ale zupełnie ona nie przeszkadza. Większość dźwięków to tradycyjny instrumentalny post-rock nastawiony na generowanie atmosfery bardziej niż na zabawianie fanów gitarowych riffów. Dochodzi do tego nieco trip-hopowej elektroniki w Lascivii i syntezatora. Oczywiście nie jest to jeszcze docelowe brzmienie debiutantów, ale wystarczy by zaistnieć na radarze, nawet na tak prężnej post-rockowej scenie jaką dysponuje Chile.

Antar - Dronita (2019) PL

Miażdżące gitary, perkusja jak moździerze i paskudnie agresywny wokal, to recepta Chilijcyków z zespołu Antar na dobrą, post-metalową muzykę. Inspirujący się zespołami takimi jak Lantlos, Cult of Luna czy Neurosis, muzycy wydali niedawno swój drugi krążek zatytułowany Dronita.

Trzy kawałki plus intro na płycie to kawał instrumentalnego hałasu niełagodzonego wcale przez ciche, szepczące wokale (Gris). Te dodają całości raczej koszmarnej otoczki jeśli już, zwłaszcza w połączeniu z chrapliwym screamem. Muzyka Chilijczyków jest głośna i agresywnie gitarowa, niemniej z pewnością tworzy też pewien pełen napięcia i smutku klimat. Również gra bardzo metalową perkusją, zwłaszcza na początku Sistemy, jest na wysokim poziomie. Potęguje ona adrenalinę, którą w słuchaczach wywołują kawałki z drugiej półkuli.

Antar - Dronita (2019) EN

Crushing guitars, drums like mortars and awfully aggressive vocal, this is the recipe for good, post-metal music from the Chileans of Antar. Inspired by bands such as Lantlos, Cult of Luna or Neurosis, the musicians released their second album called Dronita.

Three tracks plus intro makes the album a nice piece of instrumental noise that is definitely not soothed down by the quiet, whispering vocals (Gris). More like they make the whole thing sound like from a nightmare, especially when combined with rough screams. The Chileans' music is loud and aggressively guitar but it still creates an atmosphere of tension and sadness. Also the way the drums are used to sound extremely heavy and metal-like, especially at the beginning of Sistema, is well-performed. It pumps up the adrenaline that is generated in the audience when listening to this music from another part of the world.

La ciencia simple - III IV VII (2018) EN

La ciencia simple is one of the band that treat the border between post-rock and ambient superficially, if they notice it at all. They describe their genre as "ambiente libre" or "free ambient" in English. The Chile based musicians "with instrumental music create atmospheric structures and dramatic stories" and the perfect example of this is their new album, "III IV VII".

Never in hurry guitars and a lot of reverbs make the characteristic features of the band's music. When their guitars and drums go silent, the air is filled with droning remains of the guitar sounds, this ambient background creates brilliant atmosphere, especially when it is used as an introduction to louder, more post-rock fragments (as in the album's best "Noisetalgia").

Another things that draw attention are the sparse use of electronics that add up to the ambient beauty of the music ("105") and "galloping" through the ambient landscapes mid part of the album finishing "La sensación más antigua del mundo".

La ciencia simple to jeden z tych zespołów, które granicę między ambientem a post-rockiem traktują bardzo umownie, jeśli w ogóle ją zauważają. Sami określają swój muzyczny gatunek "ambiente libre", czyli "wolnym ambientem". Chilijczycy "za pomocą instrumentów tworzą atmosferyczne struktury i dramatyczne historie", doskonałym przykładem na to jest ich nowa płyta, "III IV VII".

Niespieszne gitarowe pasaże i bardzo dużo reverbów, to znaki szczególne zespołu. Gdy gitary i perkusja milkną, cisza wypełnia się dronującymi pozostałościami po gitarowych dźwiękach, to ambientowe tło tworzy wspaniałą atmosferę, zwłaszcza gdy wykorzystywane jest jako przygrywka do głośniejszych, bardziej post-rockowych fragmentów (jak w najlepszym chyba na płycie "Noisetalgia"). 

Zwraca uwagę również oszczędne użycie elektroniki, dodającej wszystkiemu bardziej klasycznie ambientowej urody ("105") oraz "galopujące" przez ambientowe pejzaże rozwinięcie wieńczącego płytę "La sensación más antigua del mundo".

Baikonur - Nihil Per Saltum (2018) EN

It's been only a while since I wrote here about Cloud Anthems, Carlos Astorga's side project. He has to be a busy man because an album by his major enterprise, the Chilean Baikonur, has been released. The band made some serious noise back in 2013 with their debut entitled "¿Quién vigila al hombre cansado?" and now they come back only to prove their worth with "Nihil Per Saltum".

The mystery behind their success is the multitude of ideas they have for their instrumental compositions. The band's music is diverse and surprising, both when you think about unique sound of guitars (great dirt in "Prometeo") and about how they build their compositions. The former are often all about peaceful passages that in some moment go awry and are destructed in some way, as in "Petricor" where they are replaced with a beautiful piano sequence or in the generally outstanding single "Voight-Kampff" with its remarkably rhythmic and dominating drums and crushing, massive guitars.

Also the references are very likable, both when they aim for the ancient myths and the modern ones like Kasparov or AI (the  Voight-Kampffa test is of course the test to assess humanity in "Blade Runner"). The whole thing is clearly one of the best post-rock albums of the year.

Dopiero co na blogu gościł Cloud Anthems, czyli projekt poboczny Carlosa Astorgi, który musi być bardzo zajętym człowiekiem gdyż właśnie wyszedł nowy album jego flagowego projektu, chilijskiego Baikonura. Zespół zrobił sporo szumu w 2013 dzięki debiutanckiej płycie "¿Quién vigila al hombre cansado?", teraz powraca i potwierdza swoją klasę na "Nihil Per Saltum".

Tajemnicą sukcesu Latynosów jest multum pomysłów na swoje instrumentalne kompozycje. Muzyka zespołu jest zróżnicowana i zaskakująca, zarówno jeśli chodzi o unikalne brzmienie gitar (znakomity brudny dźwięk w "Prometeo") jak i budowanie kompozycji. Te ostatnie często polegają na łagodnych pasażach ulegających w pewnych momentach destrukcji, jak w "Petricor", gdzie zastąpione są piękną sekwencją na klawiszach, czy w wyróżniającym się na wielu poziomach singlowy "Voight-Kampff" z nadzwyczaj rytmiczną i dominującą perkusją oraz przygniatającymi, masywnymi gitarami.

Podobają się również nawiązania do mitów antycznych jak i tych współczesnych, jak na przykład o Kasparowie czy sztucznej inteligencji (test Voight-Kampffa to oczywiście test na człowieczeństwo w "Blade Runnerze"). Całość jest jednym z mocniejszych kandydatów na post-rocki roku.

Cloud Anthems - Areté EP (2018) EN

Cloud Anthems is a group made of musicians from the Danish Sky Architects and Chilean Baikonur, making a mixture of Scandinavian doom pop and south-american post-rock. Their EP shows how good a mixture it is.

The album's title is a Greek word meaning one of the five base notions of the ancient Greek ethics and is translated to "virtue". The influence of this culture is visible in track titles throughout the whole album with references to gods or philosophers. The real virtue here, however, is great music. Guitar music seamlessly transforms from atmospheric moments to those where the artists shift to a higher gear. And higher and higher. Already "Telos" shows us the grandeur the band want to play with and how energetic their music is.

The project doesn't use brakes even in "Eros", dedicated to the god of love, and absolutely not in "Areté" in which we can at last hear super heavy, soul crushing doom metal guitars. Everything in its right place, tailored to inspire awe and finished with a climatic outro in "The Death of Socrates".

Cloud Anthems - Areté EP (2018) PL

Cloud Anthems to połączone siły duńskiego Sky Architects i chilijskiego Baikonur, skandynawskiego doom popu i południowoamerykańskiego post-rocku, ich EP-ka "Areté" pokazuje jak dobre jest to połączenie stylów.

Tytuł płytki to greckie słowo oznaczające jedno z pięciu podstawowych pojęć etycznych starożytnej Grecji tłumaczące się jako "cnota". Inspiracja tą cywilizacją widoczna jest przez całą płytę z odwołaniami do bóstw czy filozofów. Prawdziwą cnotą jest tu jednak znakomita muzyka. Gitarowe granie płynnie przechodzi między momentami nastrojowymi a takimi, w których należy wrzucić wyższy bieg. I jeszcze wyższy. Już w "Telos" słyszymy jak szybko i z jakim rozmachem chcą grać muzycy i jak bardzo energetyczna jest to muzyka.

Projekt nie hamuje nawet w poświęconym bogowi miłości "Erosie", a z pewnością nie w tytułowym "Areté", w którym słyszymy w końcu również mocne, przygniatające doom metalowe gitary. Wszystko jest na swoim miejscu, skrojone by zachwycać i zakończone klimatycznym outrem w "The Death of Socrates".

Seatemples - Down Memory Lane (2017) EN

Drowned in pastel colours cover with attention-stealing and revoking very clear connotations stain of pink, clearly indicates a journey down the memory lane. The music related ones at least. Because the Seatemples quartet from the distant Chile offers a really oldschool approach to shoegaze slash post-punk.

They advertise themselves as a band capable of Reklamują się jako zespół, który potrafi "smoothly move among noise, harmonies, layers of sound and textures". Complicated way of saying what's the most important: it's loud. It's raw. There's massive guitar sound and distracted post-punk vocals sounding both cold and atmospheric. Perhaps the quality of the recording leaves a bit to wish for but as far as a genre with "punk" in its name is concerned, it shouldn't be something to worry about.

The most important thing is the energy and atmosphere of the album. And there's more than enough of those. Slightly different are those tracks featuring a female vocal but most of them are more likely a tribute to the early Jesus and Mary Chain than the denser shoegaze of Slowdive or MBV.

Seatemples - Down Memory Lane (2017) PL

Skąpana w pastelowych barwach okładka z wyraźną, przywołującą bardzo odpowiednie skojarzenia, różową plamą zapowiada jednoznacznie wycieczkę aleją wspomnień. Z pewnością tych muzycznych. Bo kwartet Seatemples z dalekiego Chile to bardzo oldschoolowe podejście do shoegaze'u slash post-punka.

Reklamują się jako zespół, który potrafi "łagodnie przemieszczać się między hałaśliwymi harmoniami i warstwami dźwięku i tekstur". Skomplikowany sposób by powiedzieć to, co najważniejsze: jest głośno. Jest surowo. Jest dużo gitar i jest też rozproszony, post-punkowy wokal brzmiący jednocześnie chłodno i klimatycznie. Być może brzmienie nagrań nie jest najczystsze ale w gatunku, który ma w nazwie "punk" nie może to przeszkadzać.

Najważniejsza jest energia i klimat płyty. A tych ma ona aż nadto. Inaczej brzmią utwory, w których pojawia się też łagodzący wokal kobiecy, większość to jednak bardziej ukłon w kierunku wczesnego Jesus and Mary Chain niż gęstszego shoegaze'u Slowdive czy MBV.

Nantes98 - Nantes98 (2017) EN

Nantes 98 has nothing to do with Brittany because they come from the distant Chile but who really cares? The important thing is that being fans of electronic music, krautrock, Slowdive and... football, they do their job.

I can't make up my mind to say whether the project is more electronic or guitar based. While getting deeper into the album I become convinced that those distinctions don't really matter. Already "Imagen Alterada" shows us both convincing guitars and pleasantly electronic backgrounds with some special effects making the trance-like pace even more interesting. Also, the title of the track is an answer to my dilemmas as it means exactly "an altered image".

The way the band see themselves is well illustrated by the title of the following track, "Bailo como puedo, lloro cuando quiero" ("I dance as I can, I cry when I want") because the album creates a moody disco for people who are not afraid to cry while dancing.

And yes, all of the inspirations are noticeable, football too. Go ahead and listen to "Apostemos al milagro".

Nantes98 - Nantes98 (2017) PL

Nantes 98 niewiele ma wspólnego z Bretanią bo wywodzi się z dalekiego Chile ale jakie to ma znaczenie? Ważne, że rozkochani w elektronice, krautrocku, Slowdive'ie i... futbolu muzycy robią dobrą robotę.

Nie potrafię się zdecydować, czy projekt jest bardziej elektroniczny czy gitarowy, z biegiem płyty dochodzę do wniosku, że takie podziały nie mają żadnego znaczenia. Już "Imagen Alterada" ukazuje nam wiarygodnie brzmiące gitary połączone z mile elektronicznym tłem i kilkoma efektami przełamującymi transowy rytm utworu. Zresztą jego tytuł jest trochę odpowiedzią na moje dylematy bo znaczy on tyle co "odmieniony obraz".

Wrażliwość zespołu najlepiej ilustruje natomiast tytuł kolejnego utworu - "Bailo como puedo, lloro cuando quiero" ("Tańczę jak potrafię, płaczę kiedy mam ochotę") bo całość tworzy nastrojowe disco dla ludzi, którzy nie wstydzą się płakać tańcząc.

Aha i wszystkie inspiracje są słyszalne. Tak, futbol też, puśćcie sobie "Apostemos al milagro".

Thanatoloop & Vlimmer - Vlimmer & Thanatoloop (2017) PL

Vlimmer, nasz dobry muzyczny znajomy zza zachodniej granicy wdał się własnie w kolejną po duecie z The Oceaneer fascynującą kolaborację. Tym razem jego partnerem został chilijski producent Michel Leroy Valdés znany jako Thanatoloop, który swoją mroczną muzykę tworzy już od ponad dwudziestu lat.

Płyta powstała więc na dwóch kontynentach, prawdopodobnie w wirtualnej przestrzeni pomiędzy Chile a Niemcami, a mimo to brzmi jakby była od początku do końca zagrana w jakiejś z dawna opuszczonej gotyckiej katedrze wśród całkowitych ciemności. Mroczne wokale na przemian niemieckie i hiszpańskie powolne tempo oraz elektronika, której zdecydowanie bliżej do cmentarza niż tanecznego parkietu tworzą ten wyjątkowy klimat.

Płytę można mieć za 27 złotych (7 USD).

Thanatoloop & Vlimmer - Vlimmer & Thanatoloop (2017) EN

Vlimmer, our good musical friend from Germany, has just gotten involved into another fantastic collaboration. After cooperation with The Oceaneer, he became the partner of the Chilean producer Michel Leroy Valdés known as Thanatoloop, who makes his music already for over 20 years.

So the album was created on two different continents, probably in the virtual space between Germany and Chile, but still it sounds as if from the beginning to the end was all played in a long time abandoned gothic cathedral in complete darkness. Gloomy vocals in both German and Spanish, slow pace and the electronic music that is definitely closer to a cemetery than to a dance floor are the factors creating this unique atmosphere.
