Drain Blossoms - Tales from the Ixian Tomb (2020) EN

Virginia-based artist making their music under the moniker of Drain Blossoms released last month their first and second albums. I found Tales from the Ixian Tomb first and I'm in awe.

The album is commented on with the not-perfect quote from Tyler Ragar's poem: "In the middle of the winter, in the middle of the night, these two dead boys got up to fight". If there's not enough of this dark but also irrational atmosphere, the artist's website also quotes Dante. And it's somehow reflected on the album - on one hand there's a lot of dark neoclassicism, especially when it comes to the thick strings, on the other - a solid quantity of electronic effects weirding it up (The Conduit) and some other ways of expression like choral chanting in the great An Accurate Portrayal of a Solemn Betrayal or very dream pop-like vocals in Phil.

It has to be said that the artist managed to create a diverse album that at the same time seems to be kept in coherent atmosphere. A bit like Burton, a bit like early Irrepressibles - neoclassicism and electronics together serving the dark, gothic but also somewhat ridiculous compositions. Delicious. Now let's check the second album called The Halfway Child.

Artysta z Wirginii podpisujący swoją muzykę jako Drain Blossoms wydał w zeszłym miesiącu swój pierwszy i drugi album. Ja natrafiłem najpierw na Tales from the Ixian Tomb i jestem zachwycony.

Płyta podpisana jest niedokładnym cytatem z wiersza Tylera Ragera "Pośród zimy, pośród nocy, dwóch martwych chłopców powstało by walczyć". Jeśli tej mrocznej ale też irracjonalnej atmosfery było mało, strona artysty przytacza też cytaty z Dantego. Trochę podobnie jest z muzyką na płycie - z jednej strony sporo mrocznej neoklasyki, zwłaszcza jeśli chodzi o zawiesiste smyczki, z drugiej - udziwniające ją elektroniczne efekty (The Conduit) oraz takie zagrania jak chóralne zaśpiewy w znakomitym An Accurate Portrayal of a Solemn Betrayal czy te całkiem dream popujące w Phil.

Trzeba przyznać, że artyście udało się stworzyć album bardzo zróżnicowany, a jednocześnie wydający się być utrzymany w spójnym klimacie. Trochę jak Burton, trochę jak wczesne Irrepressibles - neoklasyka i elektronika razem w służbie mrocznych, gotyckich ale też trochę karykaturalnych kompozycji. Pyszne. A teraz trzeba sprawdzić drugą płytę The Halfway Child.

Hexa - Sigil Sine (2019) EN

The band focused around Carrie Gillespie Feller, who writes lyrics and music, plays synths and sings, have released their debut album. And you have to say that this Californian darkwave on Sigil Sine has a lot of charm.

The quartet of the dark women show a really dark and at the same time catchy music. Feller's vocals create a lot of this atmosphere once being almost whispering and climatic only to change into almost punk-like and cocky. Sometimes within a few seconds in one track. Another thing is that in the traditional darkwave music based on the impressive synths, in The Trees the audience can find also perfectly fitting cello sounds and finally also surprisingly heavy guitar.

Perhaps even more interesting are the collaborative works with Mexico's Jung Sing and Tristan Shone known as Author & Punisher. In both cases, the goth accompaniment of the male vocal makes me think of the traditional gothic bands and the dialog with the dark but also very feminine voice of Feller, also of some more maintsream indie rock like The Kills.

Zespół skupiony wokół Carrie Gillespie Feller, która pisze teksty, komponuje muzykę, gra na syntezatorze i śpiewa, wydał swoją debiutancką płytę. I trzeba przyznać, że kalifornijski darkwave na Sigil Sine ma swój urok.

Kwartet mrocznych kobiet pokazuje naprawdę mroczną i jednocześnie chwytliwą muzykę. Wokal Feller tworzy mnóstwo tego klimatu, raz jest niemal szepczący i klimatyczny, raz wręcz punkowo zadziorny. Czasami w przeciągu kilku sekund jednego utworu. Do tego oprócz tradycyjnie darwave'owej muzyki opartej na efektownych syntezatorach, w The Trees dochodzi świetnie komponująca się wiolonczela, a w końcu również zaskakująco ciężka gitara elektryczna.

Być może jeszcze ciekawsza jest współpraca zespołu z Jung Singiem z Meksyku i Tristanem Shone'em znanym jako Author & Punisher. W obu przypadkach gotycki akompaniament męskiego wokalu przywodzi na myśl tradycyjnie gotyckie kapele, a dialog z mrocznym ale bardzo kobiecym głosem Feller - nawet bardziej mainstreamowo indie rockowe, takie jak The Kills.

Kælan Mikla - Nótt eftir nótt (2018) EN

The girls of the Icelandic Kælan Mikla like touring in Poland so they are perhaps quite well-known in here. This autumn they released their new album, Nótt eftir nótt, on which they reach perfection in creating synthwave that is catchy but also very dark.

Both the gender and the number of the artists make me think about witches and I'm fairly sure they wouldn't protest when called this. Both in the gloomy atmospheric intro as in the following, surprisingly very catchy tracks, one can find inspirations coming from magic and the horror. The mystery part is also supported by the Icelandic language as Kælan Mikla prove that it's possible to sing in it not only in the jónsi-like falsetto.

Although the language doesn't make space for much understanding (maybe except for the title of  Nótt eftir nótt recorded with the help of Bang Gang), it doesn't influence the urge to hum the Icelanders' hits, led by Nornalagið and te single entitled Hvernig kemst ég upp? But the lyrics must be also good as the band is known for being established a couple days before a poetry slam, one that the girls naturally won.

Kælan Mikla - Nótt eftir nótt (2018) PL

Dziewczęta z islandzkiego projektu Kælan Mikla lubią koncertować w Polsce, więc nad Wisłą są już nieco znane. Tej jesieni wydały nową płytę, Nótt eftir nótt, na której dochodzą do perfekcji w tworzeniu wpadającego w ucho, a jednocześnie wciąż mrocznego synthwave'u.

Zarówno płeć jak i liczba muzyczek nasuwa nieuchronne skojarzenia z wiedźmami i czuję, że artystki by się za nie nie obraziły. Zarówno w mrocznie nastrojowym intro jak i w kolejnych, wpadających w ucho z zaskakującą łatwością, doszukać się można inspiracji magią i klimatem grozy. Tajemniczości dodaje oczywiście również język islandzki, a Kælan Mikla udowadnia, ze można w nim śpiewać nie tylko jónsiowym falsetem.

Mimo, że język nie pozwala na zrozumienie zbyt wielu tekstów (może z wyjątkiem tytułowego Nótt eftir nótt nagranego przy współudziale Bang Gang), nie przeszkadza to w podśpiewywaniu kolejnych hitowych kawałków Islandek na czele z Nornalagið, czy singlowym Hvernig kemst ég upp? Zresztą  teksty też musza być znakomite bo zespół znany jest z tego, że narodził się kilka dni przed poetry slamem, który dziewczyny wygrały.
