Mighty Bear - Einn (2018) EN

Sometimes it's enough to take a look at an artist's image and you are sure it's gonna be the next thing. This is the situation with Mighty Bear, new phenomenon of the Icelandic experimental scene. The artist combines the queer environment with mysterious, a bit dark electropop and spectacular performance.

After releasing two singles, it was time for a short EP called, naturally, "Einn" (or "One"). She proves right the impressive description of her music: "strutting onstage in a ghostly, glamorous mask to a soundtrack of intense but ethereal beats". The compositions here are rich but indeed, they have more from the not very fast, dim atmosphere of the island than from the orthodox clubbing music. The foreground is left for the beautiful vocal.

It renders Sigur Rós' Jónsi's vocals but perhaps all high-pitched voices in Icelandic sound similar for an unaccustomed ear. But there's little doubt that it's the part that, alongside the visual side, brings uniqueness to the project. There's also little doubt that Mighty Bear is going to be another big thing from the Island of Fire.

Czasem wystarczy zerknąć na wizerunek artysty by wiedzieć, że to będzie coś ważnego. Tak jest z Mighty Bear, nowym zjawiskiem na islandzkiej scenie eksperymentalnej. Artystka łączy środowiska queerowe z tajemniczym, nieco mrocznym electropopem i efektownym performansem.

Po wydaniu dwóch singli, przyszedł czas na krótką EP-kę zatytułowaną, naturalnie, "Einn" (czyli "Jeden"). Potwierdza na nim efektowne opisy swojej twórczości: "pojawia się w upiornej i olśniewającej masce w towarzystwie intensywnych ale i eterycznych bitów". Aranżacje są bogate, ale faktycznie mają w sobie dużo z niespiesznej, nieco mrocznej atmosfery wyspy niż z muzyki stricte klubowej. Na pierwszym planie pozostawia wokal.

A ten albo przypomina Jónsiego z Sigur Rós albo wszystkie wysokie głosy po islandzku brzmią podobnie dla niewprawnego ucha. Nie ulega wątpliwości, że to właśnie on, obok strony wizualnej, dodaje projektowi oryginalności. Wątpliwości nie ulega też, że Mighty Bear to będzie kolejna wielka rzecz z Wyspy Ognia.

Mala Herba - Mala Herba Demo (2017) EN

Zosia Hołubowska is not an anonymous person on the Polish off music stage (Wilcze Jagody I posted about in the fall) nor in the queer community. Last October, this time as Mala Herba, she released an album that is probably my favourite blend of Polish folk and electronic music (next to the legendary Grzegorz z Ciechowa). And it's only a demo.

The folk music is not a coincidence here, for the artist, it is a tribute "to her mom, her grandmothers, and their powerful female ancestors" and made for "witches, sluts, and trouble-makers". It has a lot of this mystical atmosphere so often attributed to the village shaman women who brewed love potions. And not to be forgotten - they were the most emancipated women of their times.

The album juxtaposes not only the powerful women of different times but also traditional folk music and a range of modern, more or less offstream genres. Apart from the with-like vocals, the album offers mesmerizing electronics ("Lament gets a heart from me here) and in some way cold-wave atmosphere as it's quite often that only a bassline accompanies the vocalist in minimalist compositions. And the lyrics? As in the big majority of folk songs, it's mostly about love. Rarely one with happy-ending (just listen closely to "Lament") but there's also a lot about folk myths ("Rusałki") or traditions ("Kupały"). Mala Herba - Mala Herba Demo (2017) PL

Zosia Hołubowska nie jest anonimową postacią na polskiej scenie offowej (Wilcze Jagody, znakomite m.in. na zeszłorocznym OFF Festivalu) i w środowisku queerowym. Jesienią, tym razem jako Mala Herba, wydała płytę, która jest prawdopodobnie moim ulubionym mariażem polskiego folku i muzyki elektronicznej (zaraz obok Grzegorza z Ciechowa). A przecież to dopiero demo.

Artystka za folkową muzykę zabrała się nie przez przypadek, płyta jest uhonorowaniem Jej "matki, babć i silnych przodkiń" a skierowany do "wiedźm, zołz i trudnych kobiet". Ma w sobie wiele z tego mistycznego uroku, którym otulane są w opowieściach wioskowe szamanki warzące napoje miłosne. No i nie można zapominać, że to one były najbardziej wyzwolonymi kobietami swoich czasów. 

Płyta kojarzy nie tylko silne kobiety czasów minionych i obecnych ale także tradycyjny folk i szereg współczesnych gatunków mniej lub bardziej offowej muzyki. Oprócz wiedźmowatych wokali, album bogaty jest w hipnotyzującą elektronikę ("Lament" dostaje ode mnie tutaj serduszko) i w pewien sposób zimnofalową atmosferę bo często to gitara basowa towarzyszy wokalistce w dość minimalistycznych aranżacjach.  A teksty? Tak jak w ogromnej większości folkowej twórczości są o miłości, Rzadko szczęśliwej (wystarczy wsłuchać się w "Lament") ale dużo jest też odwołań do ludowej mitologii ("Rusałki") czy tradycji ("Kupały").
