Los Sara Fontan - Consuelo (2026)

The Spanish duo Sara and Edi (who does look like Taika Waititi in Our Flag Means Death) was part of last year's Pohoda festival's line-up and that's how I got to know them. Their experimental music with unbelievable energy and passion was my personal highlight of the whole event. So when they released an album last month, I knew it needed to be posted about in here.

Like most of their music in general, this album is a them taking a stance against the modern world that makes our lives harder with technocracy, fascination with the right-wing politics and climate change to name just a few terrifying things. The title's "consolation" is found in "small communities that challenge the techno-feudalist logic and propose new hopeful solutions". This album and this music is part of this. The instrumental music made with violin/keyboard sounds that heavily rely on the frantic drums goes from experimental to almost post-rock in matter of seconds and I love it.

The experimental parts are heavily influenced by electronica that is more nerve-shattering than dance-able. But these are mostly introductions to the instrumental passages that are created to make you feel like dancing. It really feels like the human here fights (and wins against) the machine. Even though there are no lyrics, this album works both as a work of music and as an anthem against everything that's wrong around us. Syberia - Quan tot s'apagui (2026)

When I'm asked about the loudest concert I've ever been to, I mention MBV at OFF Festival and Syberia's gig in a tiny cellar in Kraków, where five guys barely fitting the small stage filled the space with extreme atmospheric noise. I'm ecstatic to listen to their new album that is all about the same glorious experience: the guitar noise that makes you fly.

Quan tot s'apagui (that translates roughly to "When everything goes out") is another album in recent months that is filled with dark and heavy post-rock. Yes, this is the band's signature sound (with Ain't.Care.About.Bullets as one of my very favourite post-rock tracks ever), but it's also a trend that must be fueled with whatever is going on with the world right now. But this darkness is also filled with energy (which usually is not a good sign, but this time it really is). The guitars gallop furiously most of the time, the walls of noise come at you one by one and I just loooove how the drums work here. This music is extreme, doesn't let you breathe even for a second, but it doesn't matter. You only want to breathe the sound.

Coming back to the Kraków concert: some enthusiastic but not very good at geopolitical matters bloke shouted "Viva España!" at the band (with good intentions) to which the artists politely corrected him that they are from Catalonia. And this brings me to the last point about the album: it is their first work in their own language which I respect extremely!

The Lions Constellation - New Moon Rising (2025)

This year I already posted about ARIMA, melodic and noisy guitar rock music from Spain, but not really as they are from the Basque Country. Now I have The Lions Constellation, melodic and noisy guitar music from Spain, but not really as they are from Catalonia. It took 15 years (!) for the band to release their second album, but I'm gonna call it: it was really worth it.

I love shoegaze music that can impress with the noisy side and the catchy side as well. When listen to this album, released last autumn (I still haven't caught up with the new year releases!), I can hear exactly this. Take Allison for example: obviously the first thing I checked was if it was a cover, but no: and instead of focusing on the other Allison's hazy atmosphere, it presents a fantastic melody and catchy flow that makes it closer to the third Allison, the one from The Kills. It's a banger and still isn't my favourite one here.

The very shoegaze-like atmosphere is, on the other, the main focus in some spaces too, especially in When You Dream, which HAS TO be a reference to When You Sleep, right? Same vibes. But the melodic, hit-heavy shoegaze generally overshadows anything else on the album with A Long Life Is Not a Real Life being my favourite song here as it features my beloved way of using guitars in noisy music genres.

ARIMA - Ez dago amor (2025)

Is the band led by Paule Bilbao my favourite outfit that makes music in Basque language? Yes, obviously, it's the only one I know. But the fact about ARIMA is that it's one of the European hidden gems the music of which is definitely worth discovering. Regardless of the language it is sung in.

The signature sound of the Basque is the combination of indie rock (with more focus on the "rock part" with noisy and hazy vibes. Bilbao's clear and strong vocal carries the compositions but at the same time (at least in my ears and mind) stops me from putting their music on the shelf labeled "shoegaze". Which is fair play, as the vocals a) are fantastic and b) leave a lot of space for the instruments to create this slow(ish) and heavy atmosphere. As I know since their appearance at the AM Festival, this sounds particularly impressive live.

The noisier and more ambient passages don't slow down the melodies here. It's the melody that makes  Isurkari one of my favourite tracks of the end of 2025, but truth be told, this short EP is stacked with hits like guitar-rich Zarata for example, with the spoken-word-based intro and outro tracks adding to the album's atmosphere. I wonder if the band plans to release their first LP anytime soon, I, for one, would appreciate it very much.

Blak - Mont Solitud (2025)

Post-rock so complex that you can't really keep up with everything that goes on and yet everything sounding coherent and atmosphere-inducing? This is the Catalan band Black's sophomore album called Mont Solitud and the sheer energy of the track here, together with the perfect execution of the ideas, makes me wanna say that it is my favourite post-rock album of the year so far!

I don't know how to explain it, but this music feels so genuinely wild. It's vibrant, it's wild, it's a bit chaotic. The noisy parts are very noisy, the calmer parts feel like the calm before storm. To me it's clear that the artists feel the music, that there is notching artificial in their compositions. One more thing that facilitates this feeling is that the second track of the album, La solitud és gàbia, features my favourite Chinese post-rockers, An Corporation, and if any music should be called the most genuinely energy-filled, it would probably be them.And yes, the results are spectacular.

The band describes their music as "an instrumental journey through the many faces of solitude", but to be honest I don't hear the solitude here. Rather the opposite, there is so much going on in every second of the album, there are guest artists, there is the special "collaborative song I Am You, featuring the voices of 50 people who joined in to sing with us", which I don't know what it is about, but doesn't sound solitaire at all. But perhaps the artist's wanted to explain that even though you are joined by many people in your life, in the end, you are alone anyway. Sad, but true. And explained in a fantastic way.

ANIMADORA - Sobre lo visible (2025)

If anyone craves some dreamy vibes but with strong sense of rock-like energy, very emotional vocals and heavy guitars, the second EP from the Spanish ANIMADORA is something to try. Sobre lo visible may be short, but there is some fantastic vibes included.

ANIMADORA seems to be a solo project by Andrea Podadera that evolved into a 5-pieces band (at least that's what RYM suggests). And this wide line-up is certainly audible: the compositions are multi-layered, with a big focus put on creating the shoegaze atmosphere but still maintaining the rock/grunge-like energy. The tracks are usually vibrant and fast, they make me think on the band's compatriots (at least formally!) from Arima, so I know that I won't stop listening to the alum anytime soon.

The EP talks a lot about relationships (that didn't go that well) in an emotional but also extremely poetic way. It is in Spanish, which I appreciate, so I have to rely mostly on a translator, but, yeah, those kinds of words are very universal. It is so well visible in the opening track that talks about the Devil the protagonist falls in love with and in El Carro:inóvil, certainly the most emotional piece here.

Arima - Beldurrez beste egitean (2023)

The Basque Arima are back with their third ever EP. The artists play their take on noisier indie rock with psychedelic influences and, as it's their signature quality so far, Beldurrez beste egitean is really good.

The artists admit that the album marks the end of some phase of their career as a band. The music here feels like "leaving the darkness of the sea, to feel the sun's rays on the skin" with the shift in their perspective that is characterized by the compositions with less of the noisy bang around them and with more focus on the songs themselves. As a result, we can experience four slower, more ballad-like tracks with a lot of weight put on Paule Bilbao's very rock-like vocals. They draw a lot from the noisy genres, building a good, solid base on the noisy guitars with beautiful oneiric moments, but it seems to me that there's more indie rock here that can gradually evolve into very post-rock-like instrumental blizzard (as in Kea eta larruak) kind of orientation. 

I like how short and economical in a sense the lyrics are. They are poignant and straightforward, leaving at the same time a lot for the listener to add from themselves with the best example being Oroigarri bat where Bilbao basically sings how bad she feels without this special someone.

Uniforms - Trance (2023)

Three years after their last album called Fantasía moral, the Spanish noise pop outfit Uniforms are back with their third ever LP. And Trance really induces this kind of melodic and noisy, but also a bit post-punk in some aspects, entertaining trance.

Those post-punk influences are mostly audible in the distinct bass lines and vocals that, form time to time, sound like taken from some female-led punk band - there's no screaming but some of the almost spoken word vocals certainly feel like it. However, this all is swamped with noisy guitars and dense, but energetic and melodic, music. That said, the Spanish can as easily go into different direction with indie pop ballads like Dusky, where the main focus is put on the vocals themselves. But the guitar compositions are definitely more numerous here. I appreciate how the band can create melodic songs but still accent the might of the guitar-fueled noise. Or transform their style into an adrenaline-filled run with a perfect flow in I Quit.

Le temps du loup - Leteo (2023)

It is already the third album from the Spanish post-rock outfit of Le temps du loup. The band are known for creating heavy music that still exists within the realms of post-rock and it now sounds better than ever.

The album's theme "revolves around ideas of choice and consequence as they relate to death and afterlife" as the album's title refers to the Greek mythology and the river the water of which made people forget about their past lives. And fittingly to the topic of death, the post-rock music here feels particularly dark. The composition are rich and ever-changing but they still feel heavy and overwhelming in some fragments, as if they were meant to show how heavy the topic is. Those moments of complete surrender to the heaviness of the guitar sounds are what I'm here for. This sound feels so tangible, as if it was a physical item you have to deal with. This rough quality reaches its peak in the impressive finish of The Bride of Belus. But the musicians don't forget that a music like this needs some space to have a proper build-up to make the overwhelming effect work as intended and it's very important.

ṘO - Baiagoan (2023)

ṘO are a Basque post-rock band who debuted three years ago with an album called Athalase. This year, it was the time to show their second album and Baiagoan proves that this project is one to watch when it comes to guitar-oriented post-rock music.

The artists aim to creating "musical passages full of sadness and hatred, conveying a lot of emotions", something good post-rock music should be able to do, that's for sure. And the guitar compositions the Basque band provide is quite the essence of this: calm, lazy fragments suddenly develops into sound blizzards and then die down again. Some places make a strong impression with the weight of the guitar lines (so well-done in Hapaka!) or the innovative solutions (like in Ikaror), but in general, it is a very strong, well-balanced position for post-rock fans who enjoy the traditionally guitar-heavy approach to the genre.

the abyss inside us & non somnia - our fears is what we become (2022)

Carlos Herrera, aka Non Somnia, already appeared on this blog last year. But this time he is joining another post-rock solo artist, Greek Nikos Togkaridis on this beautiful instrumental journey recorded on the our fears is what we become album.

This is this kind of post-rock that is infused with neoclassical elements right to the lid. It is opened with piano sounds, later joined by violin strings and it all makes it utterly melancholic. But it is soon empowered by louder, crushingly poignant guitars. If you think post-rock melancholia, it is the sound you think of. The compositions make it even more so: they swell around you, making the whole space filled with the autumn-like, tear-jerking feeling. Especially that it's not always about the loud; more often than not, the artists venture into the neoclassical instrumental ambient regions which only makes the post-rock explosions more impressive.

Vlack Salzo - Saeculum (2022)

The Catalan band (or a solo musician, I'm not entirely sure) make certainly, together with Syberia, the most interesting post-rock outfit in Barcelona. They recently came back with their sophomore album called Saeculum to prove it once again.

The post-rock offered by the Catalan project certainly feels like a heavy (or even heavy-metal-like) kind of the genre: with much of the time devoted to guitar riffs but without forgetting about the massive atmosphere to generate. I feel like the music on the album brings together best of the two worlds: it is crunchy and catchy on one hand and moody and atmospheric on the other. The compositions are prepared in such a way that there's no room for static passages, but rather the music is filled with pace-changing, complex guitar structures - like it is in The Crowd, a track opened with a field recording and finished with a raw guitar solo. Not to mention This Is All We Are which finishes the whole album with an impressive, chaotically loud crescendo.

Also, I have to say that the album cover must be one of my favourite ones this year.

Catástrofe Club - El crecimiento infinito (2022)

Catástrofe Club are from Catalonia and make some super interesting post-punk-like eclectic music. The Josep Maria Herrera-David Molina duo are self-proclaimed "portraitists of the global catastrophe" who "compose and create with a particular sense of tragicomedy" and with an impressive approach to mixing genres in order to create a poignant message in an attractive form, just as it is on their new album.

El crecimiento infinito is the final part of their long play trilogy. My first thought when listening to this album was to check if this was a side project of Oscar D'Aniello a.k.a. Delafé, Spanish indie pop slash spoken word hip-hop artist the first albums of whom I really enjoyed back in the day. It's obviously not, but Herrera's voice and, most importantly, the spoken word way of "singing" bears strong resemblance here. However, the project, although very melodic, is far from a chill indie pop: it's post-punk delivered in various unique ways, so unfamiliar for the genre. The flow and catchiness of pop music and the lively electronica the compositions are built on are not your typical post-punk accessories.

However the whole theme they point the audience at, as they "question the individual, but in a somewhat calmer way, accepting the collapse and fatality of a social tragedy as something certain and inevitable that can only be contemplated", the collapse that has many reasons, but most importantly the consumptive way of life and the heavy but clever critique the artists employ, is taken right from the post-punk handbooks. So is the overall minimalism and slower pace that create this fantastic atmosphere within which the mesmerizing spoken word phrases go on and on and drill into the listener's mind.

Altair - Siempre habrá luces en otro lugar (2022)

The third album from the Spanish Altair is here. After the fantastic Nuestro enemigo back in 2019, Siempre habrá luces en otro lugar makes a perfect comeback to the angsty and energetic world of the band's post-hardcore music.

There's something in Altair's music that keeps me interested in their releases despite the fact that I'm not really a post-hardcore person. However, the screamy vocals here sound honest and very, very engaging. They sound like a true scream of anger and desperation without forgetting about being part of a music composition. And true to this vibe, the album starts with screamed out "The circle does not stop/ The rust of the years flies over me, creating a dense black sphere", tons of self-conscious thoughts of a human being that can be universally relatable. And anxious over. 

This atmosphere breaks at some point when in Divino tesoro the music suddenly becomes an out-of-place pop-rock derivative, but it doesn't last and the whole song dies in static noise. The whole album combines post-hardcore's desperation and, curiously, hope as even the title that translates to "There will always be lights somewhere else" can be read in two different ways.

Syberia - Statement on Death (2022)

Three years after their signature album Seeds of Change, the Spanish post-rockers of Syberia are back with a great follow up in the form of the new release called Statement on Death. The album is filled with heavy instrumental music and as such should be appreciated by the fans of the genre.

The Spanish' post-rock is clearly heavier than what usually post-rock is associated with. It borders with post-metal and sludge but also presents a very post-rock-like composition building and is strictly vocalless. The harsh and energetic guitar sounds are characterized by a great flow that catches the listener and drives them quickly very far away. Long tracks, like my favourite Ain't.Care.About.Bullets, feel short and brief, that's how much happens in them all the time. This track actually feels like it is about to get finished in an impressive crescendo style not once but multiple times, from its beginning up to the end. It's fantastic.

And it's true not only about this track in particular. The whole album is basically never-ending excitement transformed into heavy guitar music. Also, remember that the band plays a lot of places in Europe this spring and summer and they are coming to Poland's Kraków soon enough too. Can't wait!

Lee Yi - Hayví (2022)

Lee Yi - South America-originating, Spain-based ambient artist creates minimalist but very atmospheric soundscapes. He gives a taste of his style on the new album from the Midira Records, called Hayví. 

The label states that the album presents "pieces that move slightly between noise and ambient sounds" and it's extremely aptly said. The minimalist music here offers very slow soundscapes that sometimes can barely be perceived only to develop into harsher, noisier passages within the same composition. This subtle noise is very much like this characteristic vinyl sound which only adds more artistic vibes to this moody release.

Mariuk - Blue Days (2021)

Mariuca García-Lomas is best known as the vocalist in Northwest, the London-based experimental and artsy project I posted about almost three years ago. At the end of the last year, the Spanish artist released her solo album Blue Days and it's a real dose of ambient pop magic.

The story of this album is very inspiring. Back in 2020, García-Lomas made a public declaration to learn how to play guitar and prove it by releasing a single every month. This album consists of 12 tracks so the artist proved to be successful in her challenge. And although the songs are not recorded in brilliant quality, they create unique, very intimate atmosphere; nothing brings an artist to their audience so much as small mistakes and imperfections that have to be battled with. This resulted in an ambient pop and quite noisy album that makes me think of Grouper or Midwife but with some of Northwest's very artistic vibes.

When describing the process of creating this album, García-Lomas mentions how difficult 2020 was and how she faced existential crises and it's well visible on the release. It's no coincidence that the first song's title is literally Sad and the artist doesn't shy away from singing about the most traumatizing things ("How could you not feel sad?/I'm afraid of dying all the time" or the one of being Almost 30 (that's depressing, I'm already past that)). But this sadness gradually gives place to very much more hopeful tones with The World Is Yours as their pinnacle. It just shows that the album portrays more than just one evolution of the artist.

Hooray for Humans - Tell Your Family and Friends that You Love Them (2021)

It's been already three years since I posted about Hooray for Humans' debut EP. Now, the Spanish collective is back with brand new dose of noisy energy. The October's Tell Your Family and Friends that You Love Them combines the twee pop innocence with some serious guitar noise.

This energy and general positive feeling that comes from their music shouldn't come as surprise judging by the project's name and the debut album's title. However, it's not something that is clearly expressed in music itself: the noisy tracks are mostly kept in slower pace with murmuring vocals on top of that. It sounds very much like RIDE or The Jesus and Mary Chain meet the gloomier R.E.M.'s pieces. Generally: very moody and very cozy. I love how the calmer mood coexists here with very clear and apparent noise of the guitars: for example, Tenth Floor seems to be particularly good at this exciting combination.

Especially that the further the album goes, the slower and moodier it gets. The album's title's thought may not be so positive and careless after all: there's a lot about difficult parts of life on this record, including saying goodbye to other people and the way the last year or two impacted all of us. But perhaps it's still the most important thing: to keep your friends close.

Tell Your Family and Friends that You Love Them costs whatever you want to pay.

Linalab - Desire Paths (2021)

Lina Bautista, visual and audio artist from Barcelona, is better known as Linalab and, under this moniker, she released a very post-rock album that may be a bit of surprising considering she's a solo musician. Nevertheless, Desire Paths presents some quality and modern take on the genre.

On this album, the Spanish artists joined forces with Rafa Camisón who is responsible for drums, but otherwise, it was all Bautista and her musical inspirations from Vladislav Delay to Mogwai. The fresh sound of this music comes from the fact that this post-rock comes from guitars as well as from synths use which adds to the experimental and very artistic vibes on the album. The weight put on guitars is actually somewhat new for the artist and it seems that betting on this was the right move. The whole thing sounds very post-rock-like but there's also this beautiful, clean order of sounds, you can feel that everything is in its right place, there's no place for chaos, it is this kind of clinical beauty so characteristic for electronic music.

This doesn't mean that Bautista's music is emotionless. Quite the opposite. The compositions are almost programmed to evoke intense feelings within the audience and songs like Far are the best example for that, while other compositions are more into the quietly melancholic ambiance (so good in A Hard Rain Has Fallen). It may be a surprising title, but it has to be said that Linalab's new album makes a perfectly good post-rock with a twist.

Non Somnia - Stella Meae (2021)

Carlos Herrera Quifes is a Spanish artist who creates his music under the moniker of Non Somnia. The project's names is quite deceitful as it translates to "Don't Dream", while the music he shows is all about dreamy feelings. Herrera Quifes has just released his debut album called Stella Meae.

In his music, the Spanish artist combines virtually neoclassical instruments like piano keys and strings with space/sci-fi vibes of progressive electronica and post-rock. The mix here sounds as if Tides from Nebula decided to play some moody and slower pieces with beautifully sounding instruments. As could be guessed, eventually the compositions end  up more into the post-rock realm with very guitar-fueled and loud crescendos. But even then, the music doesn't go away from the piano/synth nature, these are not only ornamentation, it's the core of Non Somnia's sound and it feels very well done. This combination of genres creates a dramatic and dynamic soundscape with words like epic and cinematic that have to be uttered here.
