Goodbye Laura Palmer - III (2019) EN

Goodbye Laura Palmer is a really underhyped project. He appeared on my blog two years ago with the second album, now I'm writing about his third one and not much has changed, the artist doesn't even have a Facebook fanpage. But he still makes some great music that can be listened to on III.

Just like on the previous albums, the attention is grabbed by the deep, fascinating vocal. A bit like Leonard Cohen, a bit like Rob Goodwin of The Slow Show. Plus moody, slowcore compositions fitting the heavy autumn weather perfectly. In some moments, as in You Know That I... the atmosphere is turned up and some tangible danger is felt in the air, in other ones, the peaceful melancholy takes over and doesn't want to stop. One of those albums that have to be admired in autumns.

Goodbye Laura Palmer to bardzo niedoceniany projekt. Na moim blogu pojawił się już dwa lata temu ze swoim drugim albumem, dziś piszę o trzecim a niewiele się zmieniło: artysta nie ma nawet strony na Facebooku. Za to robi wciąż znakomitą muzykę, co usłyszeć można na III.

Tak jak na poprzednich albumach, uwagę zwraca przede wszystkim głęboki, pasjonujacy wokal. Trochę jak Leonard Cohen, trochę jak Rob Goodwin z The Slow Show. Do tego dochodzą nastrojowe, slowcore'owe kompozycje pasujące jak ulał do ciężkiej, jesiennej aury. W niektórych momentach, tak jak w You Know That I... atmosfera jest podkręcona i czuć namacalne wręcz zagrożenie, w innych błoga melancholia ogarnia i nie pozwala o sobie zapomnieć. Jedna z tych płyt, których słuchać należy jesienią.

ALL IS VIOLENT - Cartographers Of Human Purpose (2019) PL

Płyta Cartographers Of Human Purpose już trochę ma bo wydana została w sierpniu, w dodatku dwa na trzy utwory to single z poprzedniego roku, niemniej warto przyjrzeć się post-rockowi Australijczyków z ALL IS VIOLENT.

Nazwa zespołu to z pewnością nawiązanie do tytułu kultowej płyty God Is An Astronaut, a pominięcie jego drugiego członu chyba nie jest przypadkowe bo w muzyce zespołu niewiele jest jasnych miejsc. Drapieżne gitary jakże pasujące do nazwy i pięknego cover artu atakują od pierwszego kawałka. Dużo w tym post-metalu i nic dziwnego, że Australijczycy porównywani są między innymi do Russian Circles (chociaż tegoroczną płytę zrobili lepszą). Na krótkiej w zasadzie płycie niewiele jest okazji do wytchnienia, ale przecież nie o to chodzi, przecież wszystko jest przemocą.

ALL IS VIOLENT - Cartographers Of Human Purpose (2019) EN

The album called Cartographers Of Human Purpose is already some time old as it was released this August while two out of three tracks on it are singles from the last year. Still, it's absolutely worth it to look closely at the Australians of ALL IS VIOLENT's post-rock.

The band's name is a clear reference to the legendary album by God Is An Astronaut, and the omission of its second part seems to hardly be coincidental as there's not many bright fragments in the band's music. The rampant guitars are so fitting to the name and the stunning cover art and they attack from the beginning of the first track. There's a lot of post-metal in it so no wonder the Australians are being compared to Russian Circles (although they are the ones to release a better album this year). On this short in general album there's not many places of peace to rest but that's not the point, after al, everything is violent.

NO YELLING - Silence (2019) PL

Historia francuskiego NO YELLING sięga 2009 roku, a mimo to nie stali się oni jakoś szeroko znanym zespołem, prawdopodobnie dlatego, że nie są oni specjalnie płodni. Minęła otóż dekada a post-rockujący obecnie muzycy wydali swój pełnogrający... debiut. Oto Silence.

Przepiękny cover art skrywa muzykę głośno gitarową i z przejmującym wokalem. Trochę tak jakby post-hardcore'owi zabrać kiczowatą wściekłość, a zostawić melancholię (bez krzyków, łapiecie?). Albo gdyby przyozdobić post-rockowymi gitarami udany indie rock. W muzycznej warstwie dominują mroczne z brzmienia, ale zaprzężone w dość porywające kompozycje gitary (znakomicie post-rockowe w Ashes), wyraźny bas i kilka smaczków takich jak elektroniczny bit w The Gate of the Sun. 

Podobne elektroniczne wtręty znajdujemy na Preacher, gdzie do gry wchodzi rapujący wokal i bardzo głośne, bardzo metalowe gitary. Intrygujące. Tak jak cała ta mroczna a jednocześnie zróżnicowana płyta.

NO YELLING - Silence (2019) EN

The history of the French NO YELLING reaches 2009 but they haven't become a really well-known band, perhaps it's because they are not super fertile. It's been a decade and this post-rocking now musicians are releasing their... LP debut. This is Silence.

The absolutely beautiful cover art hides music that is loudly guitar and involves expressive vocals. A little bit as if it was post-hardcore minus its kitschy anger but not without its melancholy (no yelling, get it?). Or if some goo indie rock was decorated with good quality post-rock guitars. The music here is dominated by sounding very dark guitars that are at the same time involved in quite engaging compositions (greatly post-rock-esque in Ashes), clear bass line and some tasty bits like the electronic rhythm in The Gate of the Sun. 

Similar electronic intrusions are to be spotted in Preacher where we also have some rapping/spoken word vocal and very loud, really metal guitars. Intriguing. Just as this dark and diverse at the same time album is as a whole.

Novanta - Some Are Stars (2019) EN

Dense, impenetrable shoegaze pouring out of speakers in a fast and deafening manner, this is the music made by the Italian duo Novanta, that can be listened to on the Seashell Records' new EP called Some Are Star.

The first track is a result of cooperation with Dario Torre of Stella Diana, who wrote lyrics and borrowed his voice. The first thing that is clear here is the musicians' approach to the shoegaze cannons: it has to be dense with the guitars creating the charming wall of sound while the vocals and melodies are only background's decor. The second track with vocals is To Realize, this time the vocals provided by Marco Barzetti of True Sleeper and, if it's even possible, it's even more airy-dreamy than the first one. Apart from those two, it's instrumental music that has more similarities with shoegaze than post-rock though. And it really works.

Novanta - Some Are Stars (2019) PL

Gęsty, nieprzenikniony shoegaze wylewający się z głośników szybkim i ogłuszającym strumieniem, taka jest muzyka włoskiego duetu Novanta, której posłuchać można na wydanej przez Seashell Records nowej EP-ce Some Are Star.

Pierwszy kawałek to wynik współpracy z Dario Torre ze Stella Diana, który napisał tekst i go zaśpiewał. Od razu rzuca się w uszy podejście muzyków do shoegaze'owych kanonów: ma być gęsto od gitar tworzących urokliwą ścianę dźwięków, a wokal i melodia to tylko ozdobnik w tle. Drugim kawałkiem z wokalem jest To Realize, tym razem zaśpiewał na nim Marco Barzetti z True Sleeper i jeśli to możliwe to jest jeszcze bardziej eteryczno-rozmarzony niż kawałek pierwszy. Pozostałe dwa to muzyka instrumentalna która jednak ma więcej wspólnego z shoegaze'em niż z post-rockiem. I też daje radę.

Ed Carlsen - Morning Hour (2019) EN

There's not many labels like Moderna Records, ones the albums of which I can post on the blog without any hesitation. This time they released a new album from Edoardo Pucci who creates music as Ed Carlsen. This night is the time to get deeper into Morning Hour.

The album for me was a big surprise due to the amount of electronic sounds on it. While generally neoclassicism is oftentimes seasoned with some electronics, Carlsen decided to put it in the very first row regardless if it's deep bass line in Whisper or 100% electronic ambient in Words. Another perfect track here is Home in which unnerving electronics draw attention the whole way through, up to the impressive finish. An interesting fact here: Carlsen is being helped by the Kraków-based Dobry Ton string quartet comprising of Dominik Frankiewicz, Aleksander Frankiewicz, Krzysztof Katana and Piotr Mitka.

Ed Carlsen - Morning Hour (2019) PL

Niewiele jest takich labeli jak Moderna Records, których albumy biorę na blog w ciemno. Tym razem pod koniec września wydali oni nową płytę Edoardo Pucciego tworzącego jako Ed Carlsen. Warto się zagłębić tej nocy w Morning Hour.

Płyta mocno zaskakuje ilością elektroniki na niej zawartej. O ile na ogół neoklasycyzm jest doprawiany elektroniką, u Carlsena wychodzi ona na pierwszy plan, czy to jeśli chodzi o głęboko-basowy bit w Whisper, czy stuprocentowy elektroniczny ambient w Words. Znakomitym kawałkiem jest też Home, w którym niepokojąca elektronika przykuwa uwagę aż po sam finał. Ciekawostką jest, że na płycie Carlsena wspomaga Dobry Ton string quartet z Krakowa w składzie Dominik Frankiewicz, Aleksander Frankiewicz, Krzysztof Katana i Piotr Mitka.

Have a Nice Life - Sea of Worry (2019) EN

In the recent years, especially since the release of Deathconsciousness (and it's over a decade now!), when saying about post-punk crossed with shoegaze you think about Have a Nice Life. Fortunately, the Connecticut-based artists still release their music on Bandcamp so I have a pleasure to post about their new album Sea of Worry.

Raw, a bit lo-fi sounds of the first and title track Sea of Worry from the very beginning announce a really solid work. Cold ambiance and distanced, oftentimes screaming vocals makes a good summarize of the band's post-punk. However, in many fragments you can hear obvious links with Dan Barrett's second most famous project, Giles Corey - as in Science Beat in which the vocal is well behind the music and barely audible while the whole composition mesmerizes with its gloomy pace.

The track that deserves the attention most is Lords of Tresserhorn, similarly noise-chaotic but also finished with a loud tasty bit. While in general Giles Corey is more to my taste, the new release from Have a Nice Life can hardly be ignored.

Have a Nice Life - Sea of Worry (2019) PL

W ostatnich latach, przede wszystkim od wydania Deathconsciousness (a to już przecież ponad dekada!), mówiąc post-punk skrzyżowany z shoegaze'em myśli się o Have a Nice Life. Na szczęście artyści z Connecticut wydają wciąż swoją muzyką na Bandcampie więc mam przyjemność napisać o nowym, znakomitym albumie Sea of Worry.

Surowe, nieco lo-fi'owe dźwięki pierwszego na płycie i tytułowego Sea of Worry od razu zapowiadają bardzo solidną pozycję. Zimna oprawa i zdystansowany, często pokrzykujący wokal to znakomite podsumowanie post-punku formacji. Czasem jednak słychać muzyczne nawiązania do drugiego najbardziej znanego projektu Dana Barretta, Giles Corey - tak jak w Science Beat, w którym wokal jets wycofany i ledwo słyszalny, a całość hipnotyzuje ponurym rytmem.

Na uwagę zasługuje zwłaszcza Lords of Tresserhorn, tak samo noise'owo chaotyczny, a do tego zakończony prawdziwym hałaśliwym ciasteczkiem. O ile generalnie wolę Giles Corey to obok nowego wydawnictwa Have a Nice Life przejść obojętnie się nie da.

Yenisei - The Last Cruise (2019) EN

They revealed their first album suddenly and it came as a surprise, a week ago they threw their first gig (and I was lucky to be there), before that they were involved in different projects in different genres but their atmospheric post-rock sounds as if they played it for a long time already. Check it out on the debut The Last Cruise.

Atmosphere is the key word here. The generation of it is aided by the way the Kraków-based musicians build their compositions but also by the keys that can't be appreciated enough. Perhaps the guitar don't create as noisy wall of sound as they could have (and as they do live) but this is why the attention is drawn by the keys. And by the drums that in some fragments (as in Perseids) get into a real drumrolling trance giving away such a strong pace.

Perhaps the most interesting combination of those ingredients is Roads with great deal of beautiful keys, mad guitars and buckets of atmosphere. Debut worth every attention.

Yenisei - The Last Cruise (2019) PL

Swoją pierwszą płytę pokazali znienacka na początku listopada, tydzień temu zagrali swój pierwszy koncert (na którym miałem okazję być), wcześniej grali inne rzeczy a ich atmosferyczny post-rock brzmi jakby siedzieli w tym gatunku od bardzo dawna. Sprawdźcie sami na debiutanckim The Last Cruise.

Atmosfera to na płycie słowo klucz. W kreowaniu pomaga jej sposób, w jaki krakowianie budują swoje kompozycje, a także, zdecydowanie nie do przecenienia, udział klawiszy. Być może gitary nie tworzą tutaj tak hałaśliwej ściany dźwięku jak by mogły (i jak to robią na żywo), za to dzięki temu większą uwagę kupić można na klawiszach właśnie. A także na perkusji, która w kilku momentach (Perseids chociażby) wpada w prawdziwy werblowy trans dodając całości znakomitego tempa.

Chyba najciekawszym połączeniem tych wszystkich składników jest Roads z wielkim udziałem pięknych klawiszy, szalejącymi gitarami i wylewającą się wiadrami atmosferą. Debiut warty najwyższej uwagi.

Sungaze - Light in All of It (2019) EN

Sungaze is an American "dreamgaze band whose signature sound lends itself quite equally to the realms of shoegaze, psych rock and dream pop". They released their debut album as far back as July and I'd love to come back to it today as Light in All of It is something special.

The Americans describe their music as "a little western, a little sad, with a dose of heavy reverb and haunting vocals" after which they add that a listener surely had never heard anything like this before. The whole thing starts with two instrumental tracks led by clear bass line and mesmerizing atmosphere. As stated before, the airy vocals by Ivory Snow indeed is airy and the dreamy atmosphere indeed very dreamy. In those aspects, the band seem similar to their compatriots from The Stargazer Lillies. Well, as the Sun is also a star, there's something in this comparison.

One of the most interesting tracks here is called The River and serves some intriguing, slightly out-of-tune keys and male and female vocals. This vocal duopoly in which both Snow and Ian Hilvert sound as if taken straight from ethereal dream gets to be the most characteristic trait of the band, especially in such an airy deluge as the album's finish in Washed Away.

Sungaze - Light in All of It (2019) PL

Sungaze to amerykański "dreamgaze band whose signature sound lends itself quite equally to the realms of shoegaze, psych rock and dream pop". Jeszcze w lipcu wydali oni swój debiutancki krążek i chciałbym do niego wrócić, bo Light in All of It to coś wyjątkowego.

Amerykanie o swojej muzyce piszą "trochę westernowa, trochę smutna, z dużą dozą reverbów i nawiedzonych wokali" po czym dodają, że słuchacz na pewno czegoś takiego jeszcze nie słyszał. Całość zaczyna się dwoma instrumentalnymi kawałkami, w których siłą przewodnią jest wyraźny bas i hipnotyzująca atmosfera. Zachwalany wcześniej eteryczny wokal Ivory Snow rzeczywiście jest eteryczny, a senna atmosfera odpowiednio senna. Zespół wydaje mi się w tych aspektach podobny do swoich ziomków z The Stargazer Lillies. Cóż, biorąc pod uwagę, ze słońce to też gwiazda, coś jest na rzeczy.

Ciekawym kawałkiem jest The River z jego intrygującymi, nieco rzępolącymi klawiszami oraz zarówno damskim jak i męskim wokalem. Właśnie ten wokalny duopol, w którym zarówno Snow jak i Ian Hilvert brzmią jak wyjęci żywcem z eterycznego snu jest znakomitym znakiem rozpoznawczym grupy, zwłaszcza w takiej zalewie eteryczności jaką jest finał w Washed Away.

Infinity Shred - Forever, a Fast Life (2019) EN

Modern, filled with futuristic sounds post-rock, or as they  describe it, "high-concept instrumental bliss from dystopic guitars, cinematic synths, live symphony, and glitch-y transmissions". This year the New York-based trio Infinity Shred released their third album after Sanctuary and Long Distance. Today we check Forever, a Fast Life.

The band state that they are in war with the modern world, or to be more precise, its attention span: "We always hear the world has a hard time paying attention to longform content, however (...) we put a lot of work into our album as a whole experience. We want you to feel like it’s worth it to take the journey with us.” The unique approach of their music is already tangible in the introductory Brutal Luxury in which neoclassical and pompous strings meet luminary electronics. This is the clash the Americans build up their music upon.

Undoubtedly it is true that the album sounds like one, complete story. It is oftentimes filled with guitars on electronic backgrounds that in sum reminds me of artists such as Tides from Nebula or Shadow Universe. Sometimes, like in a very well done Cranemaker, the Americans' post-rock almost borders post-metal thanks to the tirelessly energetic, metal use of drums.

Infinity Shred - Forever, a Fast Life (2019) PL

Współczesny, pełen futurystycznego brzmienia post-rock, czy jak sami piszą: "wysokokonceptualne instrumentalne błogosławieństwo dystopijnych gitar, kinomatograficznych synthów, żywych symfonii i glitchujących transmisji". W tym roku nowojorskie trio Infinity Shred wydało swoją trzecią płytę po Sanctuary i Long Distance. Dzisiaj sprawdzamy Forever, a Fast Life.

Grupa wydaje wojnę współczesnemu światu, a  dokładniej, jego krótkiemu okresowi uwagi: "ciągle słyszymy, ze świat nie potrafi skupić uwagi na dłuższym materiale, a mimo to (...) włożyliśmy w nasz album wiele wysiłku by brzmiał jak całościowe doświadczenie. Chcemy byście chcieli udać się z nami w tę podróż.” Wyjątkowość jej muzyki słyszymy już w intrze Brutal Luxury, gdzie neoklasyczne i pompatyczne skrzypce spotykają świetlistą elektronikę. To na tym zderzeniu bazuje pomysł Amerykanów na muzykę.

Bez wątpienia prawdą jest, że albumu słucha się jak jednej, długiej historii. W większości wypełniona jest ona gitarami i elektronicznymi tłami, co w sumie przypomina mi takich wykonawców jak Tides from Nebula czy Shadow Universe. Miejscami, tak jak w bardzo udanym Cranemaker, post-rock Amerykanów graniczy już niemal z post-metalem dzięki niestrudzonej pracy perkusji.

Noorvik - Omissions (2019) EN

The Germans of Noorvik have already appeared on the blog of course, it's one of the band that made me pay close attention to the uber-rich post-rock scene of the country. Now the Cologne-based artists released a new EP and, as it could be guessed, Omissions is a really solid piece of music.

Their as guitar as possible post-rock is a mixture of melodic riffs and heavy noise. As in the album opening Floating in which the dancing, subtle guitar sounds suddenly ends in the middle of the track where the guitar noise starts to take over. And doesn't stop up to the end as the musicians find more and more ways to generate it. Especially impressive is the final part of Above, animistically aggressive fragments of Hidden or slowly developing Dark. The Germans delivered what they were supposed to deliver. Again.

Noorvik - Omissions (2019) PL

Niemcy z Noorvik już oczywiście pojawiali się na blogu, to jeden z tych zespołów, który zwrócił moją uwagę na przebogatą niemiecką scenę post-rockową. Teraz artyści z Kolonii wydali nową EP-kę i, jak należało się spodziewać, Omissions jest bardzo solidne.

Ich gitarowy jak tylko się da post-rock to mieszanka melodyjnych riffów i ciężkiego hałasu. Tak jest w otwierającym krążek Floating, w którym tańczące, łagodne granie kończy się mniej więcej w połowie, gdy do gry wchodzi gitarowy hałas. I ten nie ustępuje aż do końca bo muzycy znajdują coraz to inne sposoby by go generować. Nadzwyczaj efektownie brzmi zwłaszcza końcówka Above, zwierzęco agresywne fragmenty Hidden czy długo rozkręcający się Dark. Niemcy znów dowieźli co mieli dowieźć.

A, i nie należy zapominać o tradycyjnie pięknym cover arcie.

Belle Envie - Pink Noise (2019) EN

A year after he released his last single, Gordon Huntley creating music as Belle Envie, decided to get together and against some bad luck in private life finalize his debut EP. And it was a good call as Pink Noise makes a great collection of dance invitations and subtle noise.

The Canadian makes balanced mix of almost dance-able electronic music with its typical tricks known from more mainstream songs, with shoegaze vibe of the airy backgrounds and general oneiric atmosphere. Great work here is done by synths that, together with Huntley's dispersed vocals are responsible for the dreamy climate of the album (especially in Pink Light Leak!). On the other hand, the tracks here are lively and absolutely dance-worthy, it's perhaps the most electropop music that made it way to this blog. Worth checking out.

W rok po wydaniu ostatniego singla, Gordon Huntley tworzący jako Belle Envie, postanowił zebrać się w sobie i pomimo przeciwności losu, sfinalizować debiutancką EP-kę. I bardzo dobrze bo Pink Noise to świetna kolekcja pełna zaproszeń do tańca jak i subtelnego hałasu.

Kanadyjczyk tworzy zbalansowaną mieszankę niemal tanecznej elektroniki z typowymi dla niej zagraniami znanymi z bardziej mainstreamowych utworów, z shoegaze'owym vibem eterycznych teł i generalnej oniryczności. Wielką robotę robią tu synthy, które razem z rozproszonym, rozmarzonym głosem Huntleya odpowiadają za senną atmosferę na płycie (zwłaszcza w Pink Light Leak!). Z drugiej strony, kawałki na niej są żywe i bezsprzecznie nadające się do tańca, być może jest to najbardziej electropopowa muzyka, która dostała się na tego bloga. Warto sprawdzić.

Fleur Du Mal - Spleen I (2019) EN

Fleur Du Mal is a duo made of artists Obermann and Faber, musicians who are present of the country's music scene for a while now, this time join their forces with a clear goal. For now they have released an EP called Spleen I.

The artists place their music somewhere between the French chanson, alternative rock and post-metal while defining their goal as "to give a dream back to a French scene rooted in the realism of its disillusioned era". Quite a genre range but also a noble goal. Another one is war against cynicism as "Cynicism is what will kill us all". This whole thing resulted in an album on which one is supposed to hear both Etienne Daho and Deftones and Mogwai.

It starts with a dirty track played mostly on synths. But it's just a beginning, the next ones are ruled by quite screamy guitars between which the Alcest-like vocal dances. Actually there's more common points with the more famous French band while the main difference is more alt-rock vibes and higher pace offered by the Paris-based musicians up to the actually post-rock-like finish in Nuit.

Fleur Du Mal to duet założony przez muzyków Obermanna i Fabera, artystów tworzących na krajowej scenie już od jakiegoś czasu, tym razem łączących siły z jasnym celem. Na razie wydali debiutancką EP-kę zatytułowaną Spleen I.

Artyści umiejscawiają swoją muzykę pomiędzy francuskim chanson, alternatywnym rockiem i post-metalem a swój cel definiują jako "przywrócenie marzeń francuskiej scenie zakorzenionej w realizmie swoich wypranych ze złudzeń czasów". Duże rozproszenie gatunkowe ale i cel szczytny. Innym jest walka z cynizmem, bo "cynizm to to, co nas wszystkich zabija". Dało to wyraz płytą, na której ma być słychać i Etienne Daho i Deftones i Mogwai.

Zaczyna się ona bardzo brudnym kawałkiem zagranym przede wszystkim na synthach. Ale to dopiero początek, w kolejnych królują dość wrzaskliwe gitary, między którymi lawiruje wokal brzmiący jak żywcem wyjęty z twórczości Alcest. Zresztą podobieństw jest więcej, natomiast zespoły różnie przede wszystkim bardziej alt-rockowy charakter i szybsze tempo paryżan aż po zupełnie post-rockową końcówkę w Nuit.

Ranges - Babel (2019) EN

The American Ranges are with us for some time already and they managed to made a name of one of the best offstream instrumental rock bands. They released such awesome albums as The Ascensionist and achieved things like performing on the main stage of dunk!festival. And no they took another step of their career with the new album called Babel.

The band's class comes from the quality of the guitar sound they produce. On the one hand, it's not bland and plastic-like, on the other they don't murder the melodic side of it. The Americans make the guitars sound dark, monumental and crushingly beautiful in every track. But they can also be somewhat chaotically peaceful, as in the melancholic Babylon the Great, Pt. 3 that in a perfect way transforms into the fantastically elevated Idolator. But the pinnacle of monumentalism they reach in Demagogue, a track relatively short but making its way into listeners' heart and minds rapidly and directly. The whole album should be looked into thoroughly as it constitutes a dark symphony ranging from the deep voids into sound mountains' peaks

Amerykanie z Ranges są z nami już od lat i przez ten czas wyrobili sobie markę jednej z najlepszych poza-mainstreamowych kapel z instrumentalnym rockiem. Zespół ma oczywiście za sobą tak genialne płyty jak The Ascensionist czy takie osiągnięcia jak główna scena na dunk!festivalu. A teraz zrobił kolejny krok w swojej karierze z nowym albumem Babel.

Kunszt zespołu polega na uzyskaniu takiego brzmienia gitar, które z jednej strony nie wydaje się mdłe i plastikowe, a z drugiej nie zabija melodyjności. U Amerykanów gitary są mroczne, potężne i wbijają w podłogę w każdym kawałku. Potrafią również być w pewien sposób chaotycznie spokojni jak w melancholijnym Babylon the Great, Pt. 3, który w znakomity sposób przechodzi w fantastycznie podniosły Idolator. Ale szczyty monumentalizmu osiągają w stosunkowo niedługim, za to wbijającym się w mózg i serce Demagogue. Zagłębić należy się w cały album bo od początku do końca jest stanowi on mroczną symfonię rozciągającą się od głębokich otchłani po szczyty muzycznych gór.

Isoberlinia - Isoberlinia (2019) EN

The debut EP by the Swedish Isoberlinia, entitled just like the project itself, caught my attention o the spot and it absolutely deserves some hype as the level of the eclectic and difficult to label dream pop there is quite high.

I can't say much about the Swedes. But their music is already way easier to talk about: soaked with electronics and shoegaze atmosphere, gloomy dream pop. Dispersed and delicate male vocals meet here very lively backgrounds, especially when it comes to the bass line and percussion fragments that can be almost tribal-trance-like (in Wash). This track is extremely interesting as it mesmerizes also with the psychedelic guitar and, obviously, shoegaze vocal.

The longer the short EP goes, the more diverse and eclectic it seems. In Finest Hour the show is stolen by acoustic guitar sounding as if it was taken from a "Spanish Masters of Guitar" album. In Darkest Hour on the other hand, the music is ruled by new age synths. And it all comes together, a really good debut. 

Isoberlinia costs whatever you want to pay.

Debiutancka EP-ka szwedzkiego zespołu Isoberlinia zatytułowana tak samo jak projekt wpadła mi w ucho od razu i zasługuje na spory rozgłos biorąc pod uwagę jakość eklektycznego i ciężkiego do zaszufladkowania dream popu na niej zawartego.

O Szwedach za wiele nie potrafię powiedzieć. Natomiast ich muzyka jest już bardziej wyrazista: przesiąknięty elektroniką i shoegaze'ową atmosferą ponury dream pop. Rozproszony i delikatny męski wokal spotyka w niej całkiem żywe tła, zwłaszcza jeśli chodzi o linię basu i elementy perkusyjne, które potrafią być wręcz tribalowo-transowe (w Wash). Ten kawałek zresztą jest mega ciekawy bo hipnotyzuje również psychodeliczną gitarą i, oczywiście, shoegaze'owym wokalem.

Im dłużej trwa ta krótka EP-ka tym bardziej zróżnicowana i eklektyczna się wydaje. W Finest Hour na pierwszy plan wysuwa się gitara akustyczna brzmiąca niemal tak jakby wzięto ją ze składanki "Hiszpańscy Mistrzowie Gitary". W Darkest Hour za to królują newage'owe synthy. I wszystko jakoś ze sobą współpracuje, bardzo dobry debiut.

I have to admit that I waited for the Russian's debut album quite eagerly since I posted about his single Cold Creek. I can say now that the Saint Petersburg-based artist's I Know You're Always There was absolutely worth waiting for.

The Russian uses his music to talk about feelings that "I was embarrassed to talk about, and I would hardly have chosen the right words, so I decided to do without them and put everything into tools". The tools mentioned include first of all the clear and absolutely pivotal piano accompanied by strings ambient backgrounds. It's melancholic but without exaggeration. It's also charming and engaging. Undoubtedly a good start for the musician who is very autocritical and promises his next album to be even better.

Muszę przyznać, że na album Rosjanina bardzo czekałem od kiedy na blogu pojawił się jego singiel Cold Creek. Teraz w końcu mogę powiedzieć, że I Know You're Always There, debiut artysty z Petersburga, absolutnie nie zawodzi. 

Rosjanin używa muzyki do mówienia o uczuciach, o których "był zażenowany by mówić do czego nie znajdował właściwych słów więc zdecydował się je zastąpić innymi narzędziami.". Narzędzia te to przede wszystkim wyraźne, pierwszoplanowe pianino wspomagane smyczkami i ambientowymi tłami. Jest melancholijnie, ale bez przesady. Jest urokliwie i zajmująco. Bez wątpienia dobry start muzyka, który zresztą jest bardzo autokrytyczny i obiecuje następnym razem spisać się jeszcze lepiej.

Bad Light District - Lucky Blood Moon (2019) EN

Bad Light District is a band present on Polish scene for a decade now. This time the project led by New York Crasnals' Michał Smolicki makes a comeback to his solo work and celebrates the impressive occasion with a new album called Lucky Blood Moon.

The music on the album can be described as approachable, very melodic post-punk that doesn't put off people not used to the genre's raw while at the same time keeps its all strengths with the cold, unnerving atmosphere in the first place. It shows for example in Off the Grid with its looped chorus, engaging melody and finally the impressive finish. Another examples include Cold Universe the industrial backgrounds of which make you prickle, absolutely catchy Part-Time Prophets or the smart lyrics of Sangry (Sad and Angry). A long and good album with many tracks on high level.

Bad Light District to zespół, który na polskiej scenie obecny jest już od dekady. Tym razem projekt skupiony wokół znanego z New York Crasnals Michała Smolickiego to powrót do jego solowej twórczości i świętowanie okrągłej rocznicy powstania płytą Lucky Blood Moon.

Muzyka na niej to przystępny, bardzo melodyjny post-punk, który nie odrzuca nieprzyzwyczajonych do surowego brzmienia gatunku, a jednocześnie zachowuje wszystkie jego zalety z chłodną i niepokojącą atmosferą na czele. Tak jak chociażby w Off the Grid z jego zaloopowanym refrenem, wciągającą melodią i w końcu efektownym zakończeniem. Innymi przykładami są Cold Universe, którego industrialne tła przyprawiają o ciarki na grzbiecie, wpadający nadzwyczaj w ucho Part-Time Prophets czy w końcu cwany tekst Sangry (Sad and Angry). Równa, długa i dobra płyta.
